E8 M - Ask AI for focused writing feedback
E8 M - Ask AI for focused writing feedback
Einleitung

Mini-Beschreibung: Ask AI for focused feedback on your own English text. Choose one or two criteria such as structure, passive voice or tenses. The AI should help you revise your text — not replace it.
Course rule: You write. AI comments. You decide. You revise.
This aiMOOC is for Englisch as a first foreign language in Klasse 8, Baden-Württemberg, M-Niveau. You work mainly in English. German help appears only when it is useful.
I can ...
- I can ask an AI for feedback on one clear writing criterion.
- I can understand short feedback and decide whether it is useful.
- I can improve structure, passive forms and tenses in my own text.
- I can explain why I accepted or rejected an AI suggestion.
- I can protect private information and keep control of my text.
Before you start

Think first — no AI yet.
Write three short answers in English:
- What makes a text easy to follow?
- Which tense problems do you often notice in your writing?
- When can the passive voice be useful?
Hint: Think about paragraphs, time order and what is more important: the action or the person doing it.
Deutsch-Hilfe bei Bedarf: Du musst noch keine perfekte Regel nennen. Formuliere, was Du schon weißt.
Media start: What is useful feedback?
Watch the video. Focus on advice that helps a writer improve a text step by step.
While viewing:
- Note two tips you understand.
- Choose one tip you already use.
- Say which tip could help with your next school text.
Do not copy a model text. Your goal is to improve your own writing process.
Context: A school media project
The following people are fictional. No real social-media profiles or private data are used.
Maya, Leo and Sam are in a school media team. They are preparing a short report about a project week. Maya has written a first draft and wants feedback before she submits it.
Maya's draft:
Last week our media team prepared a short report about Green Week. The first interviews were recorded on Tuesday. Before we met again, Leo had checked the sound files. On Wednesday we chose three short quotes and added them to the article. A photo was taken in the school garden. I think our report is clear, but the second paragraph is very long. Our teacher said, “Make the ending more specific.” She also asked, “What did your team learn?” I want to improve the text, but I do not want an AI to rewrite it for me.
Reading: Find the writer's needs
Answer in English.
- What is Maya writing?
- Which part of her text worries her?
- Which sentence is passive?
- What had happened before the team met again?
- What two pieces of teacher feedback are reported at the end?
Hint 1: Scan for was/were + past participle.
Hint 2: Look for had + past participle to find an earlier past action.
Deutsch-Hilfe bei Bedarf: Suche zuerst nur nach Signalformen. Übersetze nicht den ganzen Text.
Context vocabulary
| Word or phrase | Meaning in this course | Try it |
|---|---|---|
| focused feedback | comments on one clear criterion | Ask for focused feedback on structure. |
| criterion | one point you want checked | My criterion is tense use. |
| structure | how ideas and paragraphs are organised | Check my structure, not my spelling. |
| suggestion | an idea for improvement | I accepted one suggestion. |
| revise | improve your own text | I revised paragraph two. |
| accurate | correct and precise | Is this passive form accurate? |
Pronunciation focus

Say these words aloud:
feedback – stress the first syllable structure – stress the first syllable criterion – stress the second syllable revise – stress the second syllable accurate – stress the first syllable
Try: Say one full sentence: I want focused feedback on the structure of my text.
Your aim is clear communication, not accent-free speech.
A recording is optional and should stay private unless your teacher has arranged a safe classroom method. Do not upload a recording just for this task.
Ask: Make the AI task small and clear
A useful request tells the AI:
- what text type you wrote,
- which criterion to check,
- what kind of feedback you want,
- what the AI must not do.
Good request:
I am in Grade 8 and English is my first foreign language. Read my text, but do not rewrite it. Give me focused feedback on structure only. Tell me two things that work and two things I should improve. Ask me one question that helps me revise the text myself. Use clear English. Give one short German hint only if I need it.
Less useful request:
Make my text perfect.
Why is the second request a problem? Discuss with a partner.
Three focused prompt patterns

A. Structure
Do not rewrite my text. Check only the structure. Tell me whether each paragraph has a clear job and whether the ideas are in a logical order. Give two short suggestions. Then ask me one revision question.
B. Passive voice
Do not rewrite my text. Check only my passive forms. Mark up to three places where a passive form is correct, wrong or useful. Explain the reason in simple English. I will make the correction myself.
C. Tenses
Do not rewrite my text. Check only my tense choices. Focus on past simple and past perfect where time order matters. Point to up to three places and explain the time relationship. Do not give me a replacement text.
E8-M feedback mode: Feedback should be clear but not childish. It may use normal school-English terms such as paragraph, passive, tense, main point, evidence and revision. It should help you connect fluency and accuracy.
Listening and viewing: Passive voice in context
Watch the dialogue-based video. Listen first for meaning, then for grammar.
First viewing: What is happening in the conversation?
Second viewing: Listen for passive forms.
Try:
- Write one passive form you hear or notice.
- Explain why the passive is useful there.
- Make one new passive sentence about Maya's media project.
Example: The interviews were recorded on Tuesday.
Functional grammar: Passive voice
At M-Niveau, you should be able to use the passive productively when it fits the message.
Form: be + past participle
The team recorded the interviews. → The interviews were recorded.
Use the passive when the action or result is more important than the person doing it.
Try with your own writing:
- Find one active sentence.
- Ask: Is the doer important?
- If not, test a passive version.
- Keep the version that communicates your idea more clearly.
Do not turn every sentence into the passive.
Quick grammar viewing
After viewing, complete this sentence in your own words:
I choose the passive when ...
Functional grammar: Past time order
The past perfect can make the order of two past events clear.
Before we met again, Leo had checked the sound files.
The checking happened first. The meeting happened later.
Try: Write one sentence about a school project using had + past participle to show the earlier event.
M-level focus: Work with useful past-time contrasts. The past perfect progressive is not a target in this M-course.
Functional grammar: Reported speech
Maya reports what her teacher said.
Direct: “Make the ending more specific.” Reported command: The teacher told her to make the ending more specific.
Direct: “What did your team learn?” Reported question: The teacher asked what the team had learned.
Direct: “Your report is clear.” Reported statement: The teacher said that the report was clear.
At M-Niveau, practise backshift, reported questions and reported commands when the context calls for them.
Try: Report one teacher comment from a fictional classroom situation. Do not use a real person's private message.
Speaking: Feedback huddle
Work with a partner.
Student A says:
My criterion is ... One part that works is ... One part I want to improve is ...
Student B responds:
I noticed ... Can you explain why ...? What could you change yourself?
Switch roles after about one minute.
Challenge: Give a reason for every suggestion.
Writing: Your text stays yours
Write or use a short English text of about 120–180 words. Suitable text types include:
- a short story,
- a report,
- a structured opinion,
- an email connected with school or a future job context.
Then choose one focus first: structure, passive voice or tenses.
Ask for focused AI feedback only if your school setting allows it.
Important: Do not paste private names, addresses, phone numbers, passwords, private messages, medical information or private social-media data into an external AI system.
Your teacher may also simulate the AI response so that no external system is needed.
Safe feedback routine
Context → Try → Ask → Hint → Revise
- Context: Know your writing purpose.
- Try: Check the text yourself first.
- Ask: Request feedback on one criterion.
- Hint: Read the explanation, not just a correction.
- Revise: Make your own decision and edit the text yourself.
Never assume AI feedback is automatically correct. Check language level, facts and grammar.
Error analysis: Useful or not useful?
Read the four fictional AI comments.
Comment A: Paragraph two has three different ideas. Consider splitting it after the sentence about the interviews.
Comment B: Here is a completely rewritten version of your text.
Comment C: “The interviews were recorded” is a correct passive form because the interviews are the focus.
Comment D: Your text sounds bad. Improve it.
Decide:
- Which comments are focused?
- Which comment breaks the “do not rewrite” rule?
- Which comment gives a reason?
- Which comment is too vague to help?
Transfer: Rewrite one weak feedback comment so that it becomes useful.
Direct feedback practice
Read this sentence:
Before we met, the photos were checked by Sam and Maya had finished the captions.
Possible focused feedback:
Your time order is understandable. Check whether you need both names after “by”. Also ask yourself which action happened first and whether the past perfect makes that clear.
Now revise the sentence yourself.
No model answer is required. More than one good revision may be possible.
Mediation
A classmate asks in German:
Warum soll ich die KI nicht einfach meinen ganzen Text verbessern lassen?
Explain the idea in simple English in two or three sentences. Do not translate every word.
Start if needed:
The main idea is that ... If the AI rewrites everything, ... Focused feedback helps you ...
Transfer: From AI feedback to independent writing
Use the same checklist without AI.
| Check | Your question |
|---|---|
| Purpose | Does my text do the job? |
| Structure | Does each paragraph have a clear function? |
| Tenses | Is the time order clear? |
| Passive | Is the passive useful and correctly formed? |
| Evidence | Did I explain my reasons or examples? |
| Revision | Can I explain every important change I made? |
The long-term goal is not to need more AI. The goal is to become a more independent writer.
Can-do check

Lernnachweis
For a successful learning record, show that you can:
- write your own coherent English text at an appropriate E8-M level,
- formulate a focused feedback request,
- use and explain selected passive forms,
- show clear past-time relationships,
- use reported statements, questions and commands where suitable,
- evaluate AI feedback instead of accepting it automatically,
- document at least two self-made revisions,
