Einleitung

Mini-Beschreibung: This aiMOOC is for English as the first foreign language, Klasse 9, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg. You learn to use digital tools strategically for English. You use a dictionary, audio, subtitles, playback controls and note tools only when they help you solve a clear problem. No automatic full translation.

Your learning routine: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.

You work mainly in English. German is a short support when you are stuck. The goal is clear communication, not a perfect accent. You keep your own ideas and your own texts.

Digital safety: Use fictional names and application data. Do not use private social-media data. Recordings are voluntary and private. Do not upload your own or other people's texts, voices or images without permission. Do not send school work to external AI tools unless this is clearly allowed. Check AI facts, sources and feedback before you use them. Avoid culture clichés: use specific information and reliable sources instead of stereotypes.

Media start: What helps you?

Look at the media. Name the tools you can see or imagine. Then say one sentence: This tool can help me when …

Quick start: Play a short part of the video below. First listen without subtitles. What is the topic? Then listen again and use one tool only.

The video is a BBC Learning English technology compilation. Choose one short chapter, not the full video. First try to understand the main idea. Only after that may you use subtitles or slower playback.

I-can-Ziele

After this aiMOOC, you can say:

  1. I can choose a digital tool for a clear English-learning problem.
  2. I can use context before I open a dictionary.
  3. I can listen once before I use subtitles or a transcript.
  4. I can use playback controls to repeat a difficult part.
  5. I can take short notes with keywords.
  6. I can ask for help and use hints without translating everything.
  7. I can improve a short spoken or written text and explain one change.
  8. I can check digital or AI-supported information before I trust it.

Vorwissen: Your tool habits

Answer in short English sentences.

  1. Tool check: Which tool do you use when you do not know one word?
  2. Listening habit: Do you turn subtitles on before or after your first listening?
  3. Notes habit: Do you write full sentences or keywords?
  4. Translation habit: What can you try before a translation tool?
  5. Safety check: Which data should stay private?

Starter phrases: I usually … / First, I … / I need help when … / I should not share …

The smart tool ladder

Use the smallest helpful tool.

Problem First move Tool move Back to English
One unknown word Guess from context Check one word in a learner dictionary Read the sentence again
A word sounds difficult Try it once Play dictionary audio Say it in a short phrase
A video is hard Listen for the main idea Replay or slow one short part Say the main idea
You miss details Listen again Turn subtitles on after the first attempt Turn them off and retell
You forget ideas Pick key words Make 3–5 short notes Speak or write from the notes

Rule: A tool is useful when it helps you do more English afterwards.

Dictionary: check, do not translate everything

Before you look up a word, read the whole sentence. Ask: What could this word mean here? Then check only the word or short phrase you need.

A useful dictionary entry can show meaning, word class, example, pronunciation and sometimes common word partners. Choose the meaning that fits the sentence.

Watch a short part of this video. Listen for the advice about context and dictionary use.

Mini-task: Read: The app is useful, but the menu is confusing. Guess confusing. Then check the word. Write only one short note: confusing = difficult to understand.

Listening and viewing: three passes

Use a clear three-pass routine.

  1. Pass 1 – main idea: No transcript. No full translation. What is the topic?
  2. Pass 2 – details: Replay one short part. Slower speed is okay if you need it.
  3. Pass 3 – support: Turn on English subtitles or read a transcript. Check what you missed.

Listening task with the BBC video above: Choose one six-minute chapter. Write 3 keywords after Pass 1. Add 2 details after Pass 2. Only then use subtitles and correct your notes.

Two-speaker challenge: Who says the main idea? What does the second speaker add? You do not need every word.

Playback controls: repeat with a purpose

Playback controls are learning tools when you use them for a small part.

Try this: Find a 10–20 second part. Play it once. Replay it. If needed, use a slower speed. Then return to normal speed and say one sentence about the part.

Do not keep very slow playback for the whole task. Your goal is to return to normal, clear English.

Reading: one tool at a time

Read the short text first without a dictionary.

Sam's study routine

Sam has to understand a short English video for school. First, Sam watches it without subtitles and writes three keywords. The first minute is difficult, so Sam replays one short part. Then Sam turns on English subtitles and checks the notes. One new word is still unclear. Sam guesses the meaning from the sentence and uses an English learner dictionary. The dictionary audio helps with pronunciation. At the end, Sam explains the main idea to a partner. Sam does not translate the full video.

Reading check: Why does Sam use subtitles late? Why does Sam use the dictionary for only one word? Which step brings Sam back to active English?

Context vocabulary

Learn these words in useful chunks, not as a long translation list.

Word or chunk Simple English meaning Useful example
context words and ideas around a word Use the context first.
meaning what a word or message says Check the meaning.
subtitle written words on a video Turn on English subtitles.
playback playing audio or video Change the playback speed.
replay play again Replay the short part.
keyword an important word Write three keywords.
note short information you write down Make a short note.
hint small help, not the full answer Ask for a hint.
source where information comes from Check the source.
feedback information that helps you improve Use feedback carefully.
privacy keeping personal information safe Protect your privacy.
improve make something better Improve one sentence.

Note tools: keywords before full sentences

Good notes are short. They help your brain listen and think.

Example notes for a short video: topic – phone habits / problem – distraction / idea – notifications off

Now speak from the notes. Do not read a full script. If a note tool suggests text automatically, check it against the original audio before you use it.

Pronunciation and fluency

You do not need an accent that sounds like a native speaker. Your goal is to be easy to understand.

  1. Listen to one word or short phrase.
  2. Notice the stressed syllable or key word.
  3. Repeat the phrase two or three times.
  4. Put the word into your own sentence.
  5. Use it again later.

Use the BBC pronunciation video for a short sound check. Pick only a sound or word that is useful for your task.

Private option: You may record yourself only if you want to. Keep the recording private. You can also practise with a partner instead.

Speaking: respond, ask, improve

Work with a partner. One learner explains how to use a digital tool. The other learner asks a real follow-up question.

Useful phrases: I use … when … / The main idea is … / Could you repeat that? / What do you mean by …? / I think … because … / A better way is …

30-second talk: Explain one smart tool routine. Give one reason. Then answer one question.

Help 1: Use the phrase starters.

Help 2: Use 4 keywords: problem – tool – step – result.

Help 3: Teacher or partner gives one hint. Then try again.

Writing: short, clear and yours

Write 80–120 words. Choose one format: a structured email, a short report, an opinion paragraph or a short job-related text.

Writing frame:

Start: I want to explain …

Point 1: First, …

Reason: This helps because …

Point 2: However, …

End: My best strategy is …

Accuracy focus: Check only three things first: clear word order, question forms, and links such as because, but and so. Communication comes first.

Fictional job profile for practice: Sam Reed, 15, interested in technology and languages, school media helper, contact: sam.reed@example.invalid. Do not use real private application data.

Mediation: explain, do not translate line by line

Your German-speaking partner asks what an English school instruction means. Read the English instruction, then explain the important points in simple German or simple English as requested.

English instruction: Watch the clip once without subtitles. Write three keywords. Replay one difficult part. Then use English subtitles to check your notes. Do not translate the full clip.

Task: Give the three most important points. Do not translate every word.

Functional grammar for this course

Use grammar to make communication clearer.

Function Useful form Example
Give a reason because I replay the clip because I missed one detail.
Show a contrast but Subtitles help, but I try without them first.
Show a result so The word was unclear, so I checked the dictionary.
Ask for help Could you …? Could you repeat that?
Ask about meaning What does … mean? What does reliable mean here?
Talk about a past step simple past I listened first and then I checked the transcript.

Digital language tools: useful, but not the author

A tool may suggest a word, spelling, sentence or summary. You are still responsible for the result.

Datei:Scribe- Wikidata powered keyboard app for second language learners.webm

Check before you keep a suggestion: Does it match the source? Does it sound like your meaning? Can you explain the change? Keep your first version so you can see what you improved.

AI check: Facts can be wrong. Sources can be missing. Feedback can be too difficult or change your meaning. Check important facts with a reliable source and compare feedback with the task.

Hilfestufen: ask for the smallest help

Use the next level only when you need it.

  1. Level 0: Try in English first.
  2. Level 1: Use context, image, title or keywords.
  3. Level 2: Ask a partner: Can you give me a hint?
  4. Level 3: Use one digital tool for one small problem.
  5. Level 4: Ask the teacher for a short explanation or example.
  6. Level 5: Use a short German support note if you are still blocked, then return to English.

Feedback and error analysis

Feedback should help you improve, not replace your work.

Two stars and one next step: Find two things that already work. Then choose one useful improvement.

Error detective: Mark one error type only: word order, verb form, question form, spelling or unclear meaning. Correct it. Then use the corrected pattern in a new sentence.

Example: I use subtitles because I not understand. → I use subtitles because I do not understand. → New sentence: I replay the clip because I do not understand the last sentence.

Transfer: choose the right tool

Situation A: You understand the main idea of a text, but one key word blocks you. Use context, then a dictionary.

Situation B: You understand a video topic, but miss one short detail. Replay the short part before you use subtitles.

Situation C: You must give a short talk. Use 4–6 keywords instead of a full script.

Situation D: A digital tool gives a polished sentence that no longer sounds like you. Compare it with your version, keep your meaning and accept only changes you understand.

Can-do check

Rate each statement: Yes / Almost / Not yet.

  1. I try English before I use a support tool.
  2. I can choose between dictionary, audio, subtitles, playback controls and notes.
  3. I use subtitles after a first listening attempt.
  4. I can make keyword notes from a short audio or video.
  5. I can ask a follow-up question.
  6. I can improve one language point without rewriting everything.
  7. I can protect private data and use fictional data in practice tasks.
  8. I can check a digital or AI-supported answer before I trust it.
