Vorwissen
Look at the four media clues. Do not translate everything. Predict the story.

- Who? A student? Two students? A parent?
- Where? School? Bus stop? Home?
- Problem? Lost phone? Missed bus? Bad weather?
- Your prediction: I think the story is about ... because ...
Listening and Viewing
First try: no transcript.
Listen to the sound. Close your eyes for ten seconds. What scene do you imagine?
Quick response:
- I can hear ...
- The place could be ...
- The mood is ... because ...
Second try: Listen again. Add one detail.
B1 listening bridge: Watch a short part first without captions. Focus only on who, where and what happens. Then watch again with English captions. Do not use a full German translation.
Listening rule: First meaning, then details.
Reading: The Phone at Stop 14
Read once for the main idea. Do not stop at every new word.
The Phone at Stop 14
1 It was Friday, 5:45 p.m. Leo left drama club and walked to bus stop 14. It was raining hard. His last bus was at 6:05.
2 Under the bench, Leo saw a blue phone. The battery showed four percent. On the lock screen, there was one short message: Nia, I’m at the sports hall. Don’t miss the bus. – Dad
3 Leo knew Nia from English class. She was new at school and often sat near the window. The school was about seven minutes away.
4 Then Leo saw his bus at the traffic lights. He had to choose. He could stay and get home on time. Or he could run back to school and try to find Nia.
5 Leo put the phone safely in his jacket and ran through the rain. At the school entrance, Nia was looking through her backpack.
6 “Are you looking for this?” Leo asked. Nia looked at the phone and smiled. “Yes! Thank you. I thought it was gone.”
7 They ran back to the stop, but the bus was already leaving. Leo looked at the road and sighed.
8 “My dad is still at the sports hall,” Nia said. “He can take you home, too.”
9 Leo laughed. He had missed the last bus, but the problem was solved. On the walk to the sports hall, Nia said, “Next time, I’ll check the bench before I leave.”
Main idea check: Which sentence is best?
A Leo loses his own phone. B Leo finds Nia’s phone and must make a difficult choice. C Leo wants to buy a new bus ticket.
Answer: B
Storyboard
Use the pictures as four story frames. Say one simple sentence for each frame.
| Frame | Media clue | Sentence starter |
|---|---|---|
| Beginning | After school, Leo ... | |
| Problem | At the bus stop, he finds ... | |
| Decision | Leo must choose between ... and ... | |
| Ending | In the end, ... |
Storyboard challenge: Retell the story in four sentences only.
Understand the story
| Story element | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Setting | After school, on a rainy Friday evening, near school and bus stop 14. |
| Main character | Leo. |
| Other important character | Nia. |
| Central conflict | Leo must choose between catching his last bus and returning Nia’s phone. |
| Turning point | Leo runs back to school. |
| Ending | Nia gets her phone back. Leo misses the bus, but Nia’s dad can take him home. |
Kontextwortschatz
Learn words in context, not as a long translation list.
| Word or phrase | Easy English meaning | Story clue |
|---|---|---|
| bus stop | a place where you wait for a bus | Stop 14 |
| battery | the power in a phone | four percent |
| lock screen | the first screen of a phone | one short message |
| to miss a bus | to arrive too late for the bus | the bus leaves |
| to choose | to decide between two things | stay or run back |
| worried | feeling that something may be wrong | Nia searches her backpack |
| solved | finished in a good way | Nia’s dad can help |
Use it again: Leo must choose between ... and ...
Pronunciation and Fluency
Goal: clear and understandable, not accent-free.
Read these chunks slowly, then a little faster:
- It was raining hard.
- He had to choose.
- Are you looking for this?
- The problem was solved.
Fluency tip: Read in meaning groups. Do not stop after every word.
Shadow reading: Read one sentence after a partner or teacher. Then read it alone.
Speaking
Task 1 – 20-second response
The main character is ... The setting is ... The problem is ... In the end ...
Task 2 – opinion with a reason
I think Leo made a good / difficult choice because ...
Task 3 – ask when you need help
- What does ... mean?
- Can you say that again, please?
- Do you mean ...?
- Can I use the word bank?
Communication first: Your message should be clear. Then improve one important language point.
Writing
Write 60–80 words.
Prompt: Explain the story to a classmate who has not read it.
Use this structure:
First, ... Then, ... The main problem is ... In the end, ... I think ... because ...
Do not translate the complete story. Use your own short English sentences.
Mediation – optional
A German-speaking classmate asks what the story is about. Give only the three most important facts in German. Do not translate sentence by sentence.
Then switch back to English:
The central conflict is ...
Functional grammar
We use the simple past to tell the main events.
Examples from the story: left – walked – saw – knew – ran – asked – smiled – missed
We use because to give a reason.
Leo ran back because he wanted to return the phone.
We use but to show a contrast.
Leo missed the bus, but Nia’s dad could help.
Accuracy focus: simple past + because/but. Do not correct every small error at once.
Hilfestufen
Level 1 – Word bank: rain – phone – bus – school – choose – return – miss – help
Level 2 – Sentence starters:
- The story takes place ...
- The main characters are ...
- The problem starts when ...
- Leo decides to ...
- In the end ...
Level 3 – Model pattern: The story takes place after school. Leo finds a phone. He must choose between his bus and helping Nia. He runs back. In the end, Nia gets the phone and Leo gets help, too.
Use the model as a pattern. Keep your own words where possible.
Feedback and Fehleranalyse
After speaking or writing, check only these four points:
- Meaning: Is the story clear?
- Story facts: Did I get setting, characters, conflict and ending right?
- Language: Did I use simple past for the main events?
- Linking: Did I use because, but, then or in the end?
Improve one step: Add one detail, fix one key verb, or add one reason.
Use again: Say the improved answer to a new partner or rewrite it in two better sentences.
