E9 G - My skills and interests for work

Mini-description: In this aiMOOC you use a fictional or voluntary profile to talk about interests, strengths and simple skills. You connect them to possible work activities. You practise useful English for Year 9 at G level.

Look at the picture first. What can you see? What could the young person say about interests or future work?

Safety first: Use a fictional profile if you want. Do not give your full name, address, phone number, school details, private social-media data, health information or family information. Audio recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless you clearly agree to share them.

I can ...

After this course, you can say:

  1. I can talk about my interests.
  2. I can name some strengths and skills.
  3. I can connect skills to simple work activities.
  4. I can ask and answer questions about work interests.
  5. I can give a short reason with because.
  6. I can write a short work profile.
  7. I can improve my English after feedback.

Your learning route

English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again

You do not need to understand every word. First find the main idea. Then answer. Ask when something is unclear. Use a hint. Improve one or two important points. Then use the language again in a new situation.

What do you already know?

Say or write short answers.

  1. What do you like doing after school?
  2. What are you good at?
  3. Do you like working with people, things, ideas or computers?
  4. Which jobs or work activities do you already know in English?

Useful start: “I like …” / “I am good at …” / “I can …” / “I would like to try …”

Media start: skills and career ideas

Watch the first video once without a transcript. Listen for the main idea only.

First viewing: Which three ideas do you hear: interests, skills, personality, hobbies, money, school subjects?

Second viewing: Write three key words.

After viewing: Compare with a partner. Do not copy full sentences from the video.

Quick response

Complete two sentences:

I am interested in ...

One skill I have or want to improve is ...

You may use a fictional answer.

Input: meet Sam

Sam is a fictional Year 9 student.

Sam likes fixing bikes, using simple computer programs and helping people. Sam is patient and reliable. Sam can explain simple steps, work in a team and use basic digital tools. Sam does not know one “perfect job”. That is okay.

Possible work activities for Sam could be:

  1. helping customers in a bike shop
  2. checking simple technical problems
  3. organising tools or materials
  4. helping a team with digital tasks
  5. explaining a simple process to another person

These are only possibilities. Interests and skills can change. One profile does not decide a future job.

Picture task: Name two actions you can see. Then connect one action to a skill.

Example: They are checking information. They need to read carefully.

Understand the profile

Answer in simple English.

  1. What does Sam like doing?
  2. Name one strength.
  3. Name one skill.
  4. Which work activity could fit Sam?
  5. Why could it fit?

Hint: “It could fit because Sam can …”

Context vocabulary

Learn words in useful groups. Say them in short phrases, not alone.

Word or phrase Easy English meaning Example
interest something you like doing or learning about My interest is technology.
strength something you do well Being patient is a strength.
skill something you can do I have good teamwork skills.
reliable people can trust you to do your task I am reliable in group work.
organised you plan and keep things in order I am organised with my school work.
practical good at doing or making things I like practical tasks.
creative good at making new ideas I enjoy creative projects.
teamwork working well with other people Teamwork is important in many jobs.
customer a person who buys or uses a service I can help a customer.
task a piece of work to do I can finish a simple task.

Do not learn all words at once. Choose six words first. Use each one in a short sentence.

Pronunciation and fluency

Focus on being easy to understand. You do not need a perfect accent.

Practise these chunks slowly, then at normal speed:

  1. I’m interested in technology.
  2. I’m good at practical tasks.
  3. I can work in a team.
  4. I’d like to try this job because ...
  5. Could you say that again, please?
  6. What do you mean by ...?

Fluency tip: Speak in small groups of words. Do not stop after every word.

Partner check: Could your partner understand the message? If yes, communication worked.

Listening and viewing

Watch this short career-exploration video.

First viewing – no transcript:

  1. What is the topic?
  2. Write two words you understand.
  3. Is the speaker giving ideas, rules or a personal story?

Second viewing:

  1. Note one idea about exploring careers.
  2. Note one action a student can take.

After the second viewing: Check your notes with a partner. Only then use subtitles or a transcript if available.

Listening strategy: You do not need every word. Listen for repeated words, examples and key actions.

Viewing with a purpose

Watch the interview-preparation video. Focus on behaviour and communication.

Write:

  1. one thing a person does well
  2. one thing that could be improved
  3. one useful sentence for an interview

Media safety: Watching a public video does not mean you should post your own personal data, profile or recording online.

Reading

Read this short profile.

Maya is a fictional student. She likes drawing, planning small events and working with other people. She is friendly and organised. She can make simple posters, write short messages and explain ideas. She would like to try work in a shop, an office or an event team. She likes these areas because she can be creative and work with people.

Reading tasks

  1. Underline Maya’s interests.
  2. Circle two strengths.
  3. Find two skills.
  4. Name two possible work areas.
  5. Find the reason with because.

Think: Does Maya have to choose one job now? No. The profile only gives possible directions.

Picture task: What can a career activity help you find out? Give one idea in English.

Functional grammar

Use grammar to communicate. Focus on a few useful patterns.

Function Useful pattern Example
talk about ability I can + verb I can repair simple things.
talk about interests I like / enjoy + -ing I enjoy helping people.
talk about strengths I am + adjective I am reliable.
give a reason because + reason I like this task because it is practical.
talk about a possible future I would like to + verb I would like to try office work.

Accuracy focus:

  1. After can, use the base verb: I can help.
  2. After because, give a clear reason.
  3. Use -ing after enjoy: I enjoy working in a team.

Do not correct every mistake. First make the message clear.

Speaking

Work with a partner. Use a fictional profile if you prefer.

Student A asks:

  1. What are you interested in?
  2. What are you good at?
  3. What can you do well?
  4. Do you prefer working with people, things, ideas or computers?
  5. What work activity would you like to try?
  6. Why?

Student B answers in 1–3 sentences. Then change roles.

Ask again if needed:

“Could you say that again, please?”

“Can you give an example?”

“What do you mean by practical?”

Short presentation

Give a 30–60 second mini-presentation.

My profile

“My name is Alex. This is a fictional profile. I’m interested in ... I’m good at ... I can ... I would like to try ... because ...”

You may speak from keywords. You do not need to memorise the text.

Writing

Write a short work-interest profile of about 70–100 words.

Use this structure:

  1. Interests: I like ...
  2. Strengths: I am ...
  3. Skills: I can ...
  4. Possible activities: I would like to try ...
  5. Reason: This could fit because ...

Important: Use fictional application data. Do not add an address, phone number, private account name or other sensitive information.

Writing model

This is a fictional profile. I am interested in computers and practical tasks. I am patient and reliable. I can use simple digital tools and help other people with basic problems. I also like working in a small team. I would like to try IT support or technical work because I enjoy solving problems. I still want to learn more about these work areas.

Do not copy the model. Keep your own ideas and your own text.

Guided mediation

Your German-speaking partner says:

„Ich arbeite gern praktisch, bin geduldig und helfe gern anderen. Welche Tätigkeit könnte zu mir passen?“

Explain the main idea in simple English to an English-speaking visitor. Do not translate every word.

Possible start: “This person likes practical work and helping people. They are patient. A possible activity could be ...”

Then add one question:

“What kind of tasks do you enjoy?”

Help levels

Choose the help you need.

Level 1 – words: interested in / good at / can / because / teamwork / practical / creative / reliable

Level 2 – sentence starters: “I’m interested in ...” / “I’m good at ...” / “I can ...” / “This could fit because ...”

Level 3 – model: “I’m interested in ___. I’m ___. I can ___. I would like to try ___ because ___.”

Try with more help first. Then repeat with less help.

Feedback: improve one step

Use the rule: message first, then accuracy.

Partner feedback:

  1. I understood your main idea.
  2. One strong phrase was ...
  3. One place was unclear ...
  4. One useful improvement is ...

Then improve only one or two points.

Example:

First try: “I can helping customers.”

Improved: “I can help customers.”

Use the improved sentence again in a new answer.

Error analysis

Find and improve the important mistake.

  1. “I can to organise tools.” → I can organise tools.
  2. “I enjoy work with people.” → I enjoy working with people.
  3. “I like this job because practical.” → I like this job because it is practical.
  4. “I am good in teamwork.” → I am good at teamwork.

Think: Which mistake makes the message harder to understand? Fix that one first.

Using AI carefully

AI can suggest language, but you stay responsible for your work.

  1. Keep your own original text.
  2. Do not enter private personal data.
  3. Check job facts with reliable sources.
  4. Check AI feedback before you accept it.
  5. Ask: “Does this still sound like my text?”
  6. Do not upload recordings or private profiles to external AI tools without clear permission.

Transfer: a new profile

Create a fictional profile for one person in the picture.

Choose:

Interests: people / technology / making things / organising / nature

Strengths: friendly / patient / reliable / creative / organised

Skills: explain / repair / plan / use digital tools / work in a team

Then say:

“This person is interested in ... They are ... They can ... A possible work activity is ... because ...”

Can-do check

Mark each statement: Yes / Not yet / With help

I can ... Yes Not yet With help
talk about two interests
name two strengths
say what I can do
give a reason with because
ask for repetition
write a short profile
improve one sentence after feedback

If you choose Not yet, go back to one help level and try again.

Follow-up course

Next step: E9 G - Applying for a simple job

There you can use your interests and skills in a short fictional application, a simple email and an interview role-play.
