E8 M - Sustainable choices – Compare options

Mini description: Compare fictional products and everyday choices. Use simple criteria, give reasons and make a clear recommendation.

Level: English, Klasse 8, M-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

How to work: English first → understand the context → try → ask → use a hint → use short German help only if needed.

Einleitung

You often have more than one option: buy new or repair, take a bike or get a lift, choose a reusable bottle or a disposable one. In this aiMOOC, you compare options with clear criteria.

The product profiles in this course are fictional. They are made for learning. Real products can be different.

I can ...

  1. compare two or more options with simple criteria.
  2. give reasons with because, so, but and however.
  3. make a recommendation and support it with evidence.
  4. use the passive in useful product sentences.
  5. report statements, questions and commands.
  6. check media and AI output instead of copying it.

Before you start

Quick check: What do you already know?

  1. Think of one product you use every day.
  2. Name two things you could compare: price, material, durability, packaging, repair, transport or reuse.
  3. Finish the sentence: I would choose ... because ...

Need help? German key idea: Du vergleichst nicht nur „gut“ oder „schlecht“. Du nutzt mehrere Kriterien und erklärst Deine Entscheidung.

Media start: Look, notice, compare

Look for 20 seconds. Then speak.

  1. What can you see?
  2. Which features may matter when choosing a bottle?
  3. Which information is missing?

Useful starters: I can see ... / One useful criterion is ... / We still need to know ...

Viewing 1: The life cycle of a T-shirt

First viewing: Do not try to understand every word. Find the main idea.

Task: Write down three stages in a product's life cycle.

Second step: Choose one stage and say why it matters when people compare products.

Hint: Think about material → production → transport → use → end of life.

Viewing 2: What happens to plastic?

Viewing focus: Follow one plastic bottle.

  1. What can happen after use?
  2. Which choice could reduce waste?
  3. Which claim in the video would you check before using it in a presentation?

Media rule: A video can be useful evidence, but you still check the source, date and claim.

Reading: Three fictional bottles

Situation: Your class wants bottles for a one-day school event. You have a limited budget. Compare the options.

Option Price Material Durability Packaging Repair / parts
Loop Bottle €15 stainless steel high cardboard sleeve lid can be replaced
Lite Bottle €7 plastic medium plastic wrap no spare parts
GlassGo €11 glass with sleeve medium cardboard box sleeve can be replaced

Important: These are fictional profiles. The table gives learning data, not real environmental rankings.

Try: compare with criteria

Complete three sentences.

  1. The Loop Bottle is more expensive than ...
  2. The Lite Bottle has less ...
  3. GlassGo could be useful if ...

Then choose three criteria and make a recommendation.

Model: I would choose the Loop Bottle for repeated use because it is durable and the lid can be replaced. However, it is the most expensive option.

Read a short discussion

Sam: “The cheapest bottle is the best choice for our budget.”

Aisha: “Price matters, but we should also think about durability and packaging.”

Ben: “I agree. If a part can be replaced, the bottle may be used for longer.”

Aisha: “Let’s score each option with the same criteria.”

Question: Who adds a new criterion? Who suggests a fair comparison method?

Context vocabulary

English Simple meaning Kurzhilfe Deutsch
criterion one point you use to compare Kriterium
durable able to last a long time langlebig
reusable can be used again wiederverwendbar
repairable can be fixed reparierbar
packaging material around a product Verpackung
evidence information that supports a claim Beleg
trade-off you gain one thing but lose another Abwägung
recommend say which option you think fits best empfehlen

Remember: A recycling symbol alone does not tell you everything about a product. Compare several criteria.

Pronunciation focus

Say the words slowly, then in a sentence.

  1. sus-TAIN-a-ble
  2. re-USE-a-ble
  3. du-ra-BIL-i-ty
  4. rec-om-MEND

Goal: Be clear. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.

Speaking

Pair task: 2-minute decision talk

Student A prefers a low price. Student B prefers durability and repair.

Use at least four phrases:

  1. In my view ...
  2. One advantage is ...
  3. A problem with this option is ...
  4. Compared with ...
  5. I see your point, but ...
  6. My recommendation is ... because ...

Challenge: Add one trade-off: “It is more expensive, but ...”

Writing

Write 100–130 words to your class teacher.

Task: Recommend one fictional bottle for the school event.

Your text should include:

  1. a clear opening sentence,
  2. at least three criteria,
  3. one comparison,
  4. one disadvantage,
  5. one final recommendation.

Useful structure: Option → evidence → comparison → trade-off → recommendation.

Mediation mini-task

Your German-speaking class representative says:

„Wir brauchen eine kurze Entscheidungshilfe. Wichtig sind Preis, Haltbarkeit, Verpackung und ob Teile ersetzt werden können.“

Explain the key points to an English-speaking exchange student in 3–4 English sentences. Do not translate every word.

Functional grammar

Passive: focus on the product

Use the passive when the action or product is more important than the person doing it.

Active: A company makes the bottle from recycled plastic.

Passive: The bottle is made from recycled plastic.

More useful forms:

  1. The lid can be replaced.
  2. The bottle is packed in cardboard.
  3. The parts are produced separately.

Try: Change into the passive: “The company packs the product in a cardboard box.”

Reported speech: report a discussion

Statement

Direct: Sam said, “The bottle is cheaper.”

Reported: Sam said that the bottle was cheaper.

Question

Direct: Aisha asked, “Why do you prefer this option?”

Reported: Aisha asked why I preferred that option.

Command

Direct: Ben said, “Check the packaging.”

Reported: Ben told us to check the packaging.

Try: Report this sentence: “Compare the repair options,” Aisha said.

Help ladder

Use only as much help as you need.

Hint 1 – English: Start with one criterion: price, durability, packaging, repair or reuse.

Hint 2 – English: Use this frame: “Option A is ..., while Option B is ...”

Hint 3 – English: Add a reason: “I recommend ... because ...”

German help: Vergleiche mit denselben Kriterien. Nenne mindestens einen Vorteil und einen Nachteil. Begründe dann Deine Empfehlung.

Real-world thinking

Read the chart carefully.

  1. What is being compared?
  2. Why is “reuse” important in this chart?
  3. Why should you avoid the sentence “One bag type is always best”?

Key idea: Sustainable choices depend on the product, its use and the criteria you choose.

Action option: travel

Compare two fictional ways to get to school:

Option Bike: 15 minutes, no ticket, needs safe bike storage.

Option Bus: 12 minutes, €2 ticket, works in bad weather.

Task: Recommend one option for a rainy school day and one for a dry school day. Your recommendation may change with the context.

Feedback and error analysis

Check your work.

  1. Did I compare the same criteria for each option?
  2. Did I use evidence from the profile?
  3. Did I include at least one trade-off?
  4. Did I give a clear recommendation?
  5. Did I use passive or reported speech correctly where useful?

Fix these common errors:

  1. “This bottle is more cheap.” → “This bottle is cheaper.”
  2. “It can repaired.” → “It can be repaired.”
  3. “She asked why did I choose it.” → “She asked why I chose it.”
  4. “He told that check the price.” → “He told us to check the price.”

Responsible media and AI use

  1. Use only fictional profiles or public information in class tasks.
  2. Do not use private social-media data.
  3. Recordings are voluntary and can stay private.
  4. Do not upload classmates' work without permission.
  5. Do not send personal data to external AI tools.
  6. If you use AI, check the language level, facts and feedback.
  7. AI may support your work, but it should not replace your own text.

Transfer

Choose one new context:

  1. a school bag,
  2. a snack container,
  3. a way to travel,
  4. repairing or replacing headphones.

Create four criteria, compare two fictional options and give a recommendation.

Can-do check

Rate yourself: Yes / Almost / Not yet.

  1. I can compare options with at least three criteria.
  2. I can explain a trade-off.
  3. I can make a recommendation with evidence.
  4. I can use a simple passive sentence.
  5. I can report a statement, question and command.
  6. I can check whether media or AI output is reliable enough for my task.
