Einleitung

E8 G - Understand opinion and reason in a text

Mini-Beschreibung: Markiere in einem kurzen opinion-style text die Position und die dazugehörigen Gründe. Du arbeitest mit vertrauten Themen, klaren Texten und gezielter Wortschatzhilfe. Ziel ist nicht eine lange Argumentation, sondern: What does the writer think – and why?

English first: Look at the speech bubble. Imagine a student says: I prefer group work because we can help each other. What is the opinion? What is the reason?

Try first. Ask if needed. Use a hint. German help comes last.

I can

Nach diesem aiMOOC kannst Du:

  1. identify an opinion in a short English text.
  2. find one or more reasons that support the opinion.
  3. notice signal words such as because, so and that is why.
  4. connect sentences instead of reading every sentence alone.
  5. say your own opinion and add a simple reason.
  6. write a short opinion paragraph with a clear structure.

Vorwissen

You already know useful language such as:

  1. I think ...
  2. I like / I don't like ...
  3. because ...
  4. but ...
  5. also ...

Quick check: Complete one sentence orally: I like learning with ... because ...

Medien-Einstieg: Hear an opinion

Watch the short video first. Do not stop after every word. Listen for the main idea.

First viewing:

  1. What is the video mainly about: facts, opinions or instructions?
  2. Listen for one phrase that can introduce an opinion.
  3. Do not use subtitles yet.

Second viewing:

  1. Use subtitles if you need them.
  2. Write down one useful opinion phrase.
  3. Say the phrase once with clear sentence stress.

Media task: The video gives language for expressing opinions. Use only one or two phrases that feel easy and natural for you.

Help ladder

  1. Try: Read or listen once without help.
  2. Ask: Ask a partner: What is the main opinion?
  3. Hint: Look for I think, I prefer, because, so or that is why.
  4. Deutsch-Hilfe: Suche zuerst die Meinung und danach den Satz, der erklärt, warum die Person so denkt.

Listening and Viewing

Listening text – first without transcript: A teacher or partner reads the following short text aloud once. Listen only. Then answer:

  1. Does the speaker prefer a poster or a long presentation?
  2. How many reasons can you hear?
  3. Which reason is about sharing the work?

Transcript – open only after your first listening attempt:

For our next class project, I prefer a group poster. It is easier to share the work because each person can do one part. We can also see the important ideas quickly. A long presentation can be useful, but for this project I think a poster is better.

Second listening: Listen again. This time, note only key words: poster – share work – important ideas.

Direct feedback: If you found poster as the opinion and at least one matching reason, your listening strategy worked.

Reading: Opinion and Reasons

Read this short opinion-style text.

Text A

I think our class project should be a group poster. First, we can share the work because each person can prepare one small part. We can also see the key ideas quickly. A long presentation can be interesting, but a poster is easier for our group. That is why I prefer the poster.

Your job:

  1. Mark the opinion.
  2. Underline Reason 1.
  3. Underline Reason 2.
  4. Circle the signal words that connect opinion and reason.

Check:

  1. Opinion: I think our class project should be a group poster. / I prefer the poster.
  2. Reason 1: The work can be shared.
  3. Reason 2: The key ideas can be seen quickly.

Important: A reason must answer the question Why?

Reading strategy: O-R-S

Use three short steps:

  1. O – Opinion: What does the writer think?
  2. R – Reason: Why does the writer think this?
  3. S – Signal word: Which word links the ideas?

You do not need to understand every word. Find the structure first.

Context vocabulary

English Simple meaning Example
opinion what someone thinks My opinion is clear.
reason why someone thinks something My reason is simple.
prefer like one option more I prefer the poster.
share do something together We share the work.
key idea an important idea Find the key idea.
support give a reason for an idea The reason supports the opinion.

Try before translating. Use the sentence around the word first.

Pronunciation

Focus on being easy to understand, not on sounding like a particular accent.

Say these chunks slowly, then naturally:

  1. I think ...
  2. I prefer ... because ...
  3. My reason is ...
  4. That is why ...

Stress tip: Stress the important content words: I PREFER the POSTER because we can SHARE the work.

Rhythm task: Clap on the stressed words. Then say the whole sentence again.

Speaking

Choose one familiar topic:

  1. homework alone or with a partner
  2. paper notes or digital notes
  3. poster or short presentation
  4. reading first or watching a short video first

Use this small frame:

I prefer __________ because __________. Also, __________.

Partner response: I agree because ...

or

I see your point, but I prefer ... because ...

Recording is optional. If you record yourself, keep the recording private unless you choose otherwise. Do not upload it automatically.

Speaking help

Level 1: I prefer ... because ...

Level 2: I think ... is better because ... Also, ...

Level 3: I understand the other idea, but I prefer ... because ...

Use only the level you need.

Writing

Write a short opinion paragraph of about 45–70 words.

Task: Which is better for a class project: a poster or a short presentation?

Use this structure:

  1. Sentence 1: Your opinion.
  2. Sentence 2: Reason 1.
  3. Sentence 3: Reason 2.
  4. Sentence 4: Short ending.

Writing frame:

I think __________ is better for our class project. One reason is __________. Also, __________. That is why I prefer __________.

You may change the frame. You do not have to use every sentence starter.

Direct feedback checklist

Check your text:

  1. Did I write a clear opinion?
  2. Did I give at least one real reason?
  3. Does each reason answer Why?
  4. Did I use a connector such as because, also or that is why?
  5. Can another student understand my main idea quickly?

Do not replace your own text with AI-generated text. If you use digital support, check language level, facts and feedback yourself.

Functional grammar: notice, do not force

At G level, some forms are mainly for recognising meaning.

Passive – receptive: The poster was made by our group.

Ask: What happened? → The poster was made.

Past perfect – receptive: We had finished our notes before we made the poster.

Ask: Which action happened first? → We finished the notes first.

Reported speech without forced backshift: Riley said that group work is easier.

You only need to understand the message here. You do not need to produce difficult passive forms or past perfect forms in your own opinion paragraph.

Mediation mini-task

Your German-speaking partner asks: Was meint Alex in Text A?

Give the idea in simple German or simple English, but do not translate every sentence.

Example structure: Alex prefers ... The main reasons are ... and ...

Goal: transfer the important meaning, not every word.

Error analysis

Look at the examples.

1. I prefer posters because posters.

Problem: The reason does not explain why.

Better: I prefer posters because I can see the key ideas quickly.

2. Because group work is good.

Problem: This is not a complete opinion + reason answer.

Better: I prefer group work because we can help each other.

3. I think posters are better. Blue is my favourite colour.

Problem: The second sentence is not a reason for the opinion.

Better: I think posters are better because the key ideas are easy to see.

Transfer

Read this new text.

Text B

I prefer studying in a quiet place. I can focus better because there are fewer distractions. I also finish my work faster. Studying with music can be fun, but for difficult tasks I choose a quiet room.

Find:

  1. the main opinion
  2. two reasons
  3. one contrast

Then change the topic and write two connected sentences of your own.

Extra Viewing

This short BBC Learning English video shows how opinions can sound more polite.

Viewing task: Watch once for the general idea. On the second viewing, notice one expression that makes an opinion less direct.

G-level goal: You only need to recognise the idea. You do not need to copy every expression.
