E8 G - Choose the correct dictionary meaning

Mini-Beschreibung: A word can have more than one meaning. Your job is to read the sentence, use the context and choose the dictionary meaning that really fits.

Media start: Look at the dictionary. What can help you besides the German translation? Think of meaning, example, word class and pronunciation.

Einleitung

In this aiMOOC you practise one useful reading skill: choose the correct dictionary meaning from context. You do not translate the whole sentence. You first read in English, look for clues, try a meaning and check whether it makes sense.

Your learning route: English first → context → try → ask → hint → German help if needed.

German help only if needed: context clue = Kontexthinweis, sense = einzelne Wortbedeutung, headword = Stichwort.

The examples use familiar topics such as school, free time, travel, shopping and sport. The texts are short but connected. You should explain your choice with a simple reason.

Useful links: Englisch, Wörterbuch, Kontext, Wortschatz, Lesekompetenz.

I can ...

At the end, you can say:

  1. I can notice that one English word can have different meanings.
  2. I can use words around the target word as context clues.
  3. I can compare two or more dictionary meanings.
  4. I can choose the meaning that fits the sentence.
  5. I can give a short reason: I chose meaning 2 because ...
  6. I can use a dictionary without translating every word.

Vorwissen

Try these first. Do not use a dictionary yet.

A. We sat on the bank and watched the river.

What does bank probably mean here?

B. My aunt works at a bank in the city centre.

Is bank the same meaning as in sentence A?

C. This bag is light, so I can carry it easily.

Which clue helps you understand light?

Think first. Then compare your ideas with a partner.

The key idea: one word, several meanings

A dictionary can list several meanings for one word. Your sentence tells you which meaning fits.

Example word: light

Meaning 1: not heavy

Meaning 2: brightness that lets you see

Sentence: The box is light enough for me to lift.

Context clue: lift

So meaning 1 fits.

Now try:

Sentence: Please turn on the light. I cannot see the map.

The clue cannot see points to meaning 2.

Digital dictionaries also show several pieces of information. Do not stop at the first definition: check the sentence and the example.

A simple 4-step strategy

  1. Read the whole sentence. Do not decide after one word.
  2. Find one or two clues. Look at nearby nouns, verbs, adjectives or the situation.
  3. Test the meanings. Put each meaning into the sentence in your head.
  4. Choose and explain. Say: Meaning ... fits because ...

Quick check: If two meanings still seem possible, read the sentence before and after it.

Context clues

Context clues can tell you a lot.

Example 1: The coach told our team to stay calm before the match.

Possible meanings of coach:

  1. a person who trains a team
  2. a long-distance bus

The words team and match point to the person.

Example 2: We travelled to London by coach.

The word travelled and the place London point to the bus.

Example 3: Mia watched the football match with her brother.

match means a sports game here.

Example 4: Dad used a match to light the candle.

light the candle shows that match means the small stick that can make a flame.

Listening and Viewing

First listen or watch without a transcript. Focus on the main idea and on one clue you understand.

Viewing task 1: Watch the first part once. What are context clues?

Viewing task 2: Watch again. Write down two English words or phrases that help explain the idea.

Viewing task 3: Only after the second viewing, use subtitles or transcript if available. Check your notes, but do not copy everything.

Hint: You only need the main idea: the words around an unknown word can help you choose a fitting meaning.

Optional challenge: This video uses harder vocabulary. Do not try to learn every new word. Watch a short section and focus only on the strategy: What clues does the speaker use?

Privacy note: No comment, login, upload or public recording is needed for this course. If external video access is not allowed in your school setting, use the written tasks instead.

Reading: The school project

Read the short text.

Jamie and Noor are preparing a class project about a local sports day. Jamie checks the word court in a dictionary. The dictionary gives more than one meaning. One meaning is a place where legal cases are decided. Another meaning is an area where games such as tennis or basketball are played. In their text, the sentence says: "The basketball court was full of students after lunch." Noor points at the words basketball and students. Jamie chooses the sports meaning. Later they find the word draw. In the sentence "The teams finished in a draw," it does not mean making a picture. The score was equal.

Task: Find the two context clues that help with court.

Task: Why does draw not mean make a picture here?

Sentence frame: I chose the meaning ... because the sentence says ...

Dictionary practice: choose, do not translate

For each item, read the context first.

1. change

Dictionary meanings:

  1. money returned after you pay too much
  2. to make or become different

Sentence: I paid with ten pounds and got three pounds change.

Clue: paid and pounds.

2. train

Dictionary meanings:

  1. a railway vehicle
  2. to practise so that you improve

Sentence: Our team trains twice a week after school.

Clue: team and twice a week.

3. right

Dictionary meanings:

  1. correct
  2. the direction opposite left

Sentence: Your answer is right. Well done.

Clue: answer and well done.

4. store

Dictionary meanings:

  1. a shop
  2. to keep something for future use

Sentence: The photos are stored on the school tablet.

Clue: photos and tablet.

Kontextwortschatz

You do not need many new words. These six are enough for this lesson.

English Simple English help Deutsch nur als Stütze
clue information that helps you Hinweis
meaning what a word says or expresses Bedeutung
sense one meaning of a word Einzelbedeutung
headword the word you look up Stichwort
example a sentence that shows use Beispiel
fit be correct for the sentence passen

Try first in English. Use the German column only when you need it.

Pronunciation

Clear speech is more important than copying one accent.

Say these words slowly:

DIC-tion-ar-y

MEAN-ing

CON-text

ex-AM-ple

Now say the sentence:

I chose meaning two because the context fits.

Private speaking option: You may record yourself on your own device and listen back. Recording is voluntary and should stay private unless your teacher has arranged something else. No upload is needed.

Speaking

Work with a partner.

Student A: Read the sentence.

The school play was a big hit. Everyone clapped at the end.

Possible meanings of hit:

  1. something very successful
  2. to strike something

Student B: Choose the meaning and give a reason.

Use this frame:

I think meaning ... fits because ...

Then swap roles.

Next round:

Kai hit the ball over the fence.

Again, choose a meaning and explain it.

Writing

Write a short explanation of 4–5 connected sentences.

Use the word break.

Possible meanings:

  1. a short rest
  2. to damage something so it stops working

Choose one sentence:

We had a ten-minute break after the test.

or

Be careful not to break the screen.

Your text should include:

  1. the meaning you chose
  2. one context clue
  3. one short reason
  4. one new sentence with the same meaning

Writing frame:

In this sentence, ... means ... . The clue is ... . This fits because ... . My new example is: ... .

Mediation

A German-speaking classmate asks: Warum steht im Wörterbuch bei "bank" mehr als eine Bedeutung?

Explain the idea in simple language. Do not translate the whole dictionary entry.

You can say:

One English word can have different meanings. Read the sentence and use the context. For example, "river" points to one meaning of "bank", while "money" points to another.

Your goal is to pass on the useful information, not every word.

Functional grammar: notice it, do not force it

At G level, some grammar can appear in texts even when you do not have to produce it yourself.

Passive – receptive:

The word was used in a sports text.

You only need to understand that the text uses the word.

Past perfect – receptive:

Jamie had checked the first meaning before Noor found the clue.

You only need to understand that one action happened earlier.

Reported speech without backshift:

Noor says the word means a sports area.

You can use this simple form when reporting what someone says.

Important: The grammar supports understanding. The main goal is choosing the correct dictionary meaning.

Gestufte Hilfen

Help 1 – Try: Read the sentence again and underline the target word.

Help 2 – Context: Circle two nearby words that belong to the same situation.

Help 3 – Ask: Ask: Is this sentence about money, sport, travel, school, objects or actions?

Help 4 – Hint: Cross out one dictionary meaning that clearly does not fit.

Help 5 – German support: Translate only the key clue, not the full sentence.

Direct feedback and error analysis

Check your answer with three questions:

  1. Did I read the complete sentence?
  2. Can I point to a real clue in the sentence?
  3. Does my chosen meaning make the whole sentence sensible?

Typical mistake 1: Choosing the first dictionary meaning automatically.

Fix: Compare all meanings with the context.

Typical mistake 2: Translating every word first.

Fix: Find the topic and one useful clue before using German.

Typical mistake 3: Choosing by a familiar German word.

Fix: Explain your answer with an English context clue.

Typical mistake 4: Ignoring the word class.

Fix: Check whether the word is used as a noun, verb or adjective.

Transfer: new context, same skill

Read this message from a fictional school club:

Hi team, the park run starts at 10 a.m. Please leave your bags near the information stand. After the run, we will stand together for a group photo.

The word stand appears twice.

Possible meanings:

  1. a small place or structure used for information or selling
  2. to be upright on your feet

Which meaning fits the first stand? Which fits the second?

Explain both choices with context clues.

OERs zum Thema

A dictionary is a reference tool. The important skill here is not looking up a word quickly, but selecting the meaning that matches real use.
