A monolingual learner’s dictionary is a dictionary for learners. The word and its explanation are in the same language. In this course, that language is English.

You do not need to understand every word in a definition. Your goal is to find the key idea, check an example, and then use the word yourself.

Learning route: Notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.

What you already know

You already know many English words from school, songs, games, films and everyday life. Use that knowledge.

Try this before you look anything up:

Your first guess is enough. Now check a learner’s dictionary and compare.

A dictionary entry often gives you several kinds of information.

Example entry:

borrow verb – to take something from another person and give it back later

Can I borrow your pen?

Notice these parts:

1. headword: the word you look up
2. word class: noun, verb, adjective or another class
3. definition: a short explanation
4. example: the word in a sentence
5. pronunciation: how the word sounds

German help if needed: headword = Stichwort, word class = Wortart. Use this help only after you have tried the English first.

Which part tells you how to use safe in a sentence? The word class and the example both help.

Understand: Read a simple definition

A good learner’s definition often uses common words.

Try these:

journey noun – a trip from one place to another

improve verb – to become better

quiet adjective – making very little noise

repair verb – to make something work again after it is broken

Do not translate every word. Ask:

1. What is the main idea?
2. Which words do I already know?
3. Is there an example?
4. Does the word class fit the sentence?

Step 1: Read the sentence around the unknown word.

Step 2: Make a guess.

Step 3: Read the English learner’s definition.

Step 4: Check an example or image.

Step 5: Ask for a hint.

Step 6: Use short German help only if the meaning is still unclear.

Listen to the word dictionary in the video. Notice that British and American pronunciation can sound a little different. Both can be correct.

Your goal is understandable speech, not accent-free speech.

Say classroom once slowly, then once in a natural sentence:

Our classroom is on the first floor.

Record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless your teacher gives a clear school task. Do not upload recordings without permission.

Reading: Use the entry, not only the first meaning

Some words have more than one meaning.

Example:

light can describe something that is not heavy.

This bag is light.

It can also mean the brightness that lets you see.

Turn on the light.

Use the sentence around the word. The context helps you choose the right meaning.

First use the sentence. Then check a learner’s dictionary.

Hint: Think about the bag and how much it weighs.

Vocabulary in context

Read this short scene:

Maya and Leo are at a busy train station. Leo cannot find his ticket. Maya stays calm and checks the information desk. A member of staff explains that Leo can use the digital ticket on his phone. Leo feels relieved.

Try these learner-friendly definitions:

busy adjective – full of people or activity

calm adjective – relaxed and not worried

explain verb – to make something clear by giving information

relieved adjective – happy because a problem or worry has ended

Now choose one word and use it in a new sentence.

Mini-transfer

Change the place. Your new scene can happen at a sports centre, cinema, school event or shopping centre.

Use at least two words from the box:

busy – calm – explain – relieved

Pronunciation: Use sound as information

A learner’s dictionary often lets you hear the word. Listen, repeat, and compare.

Try this routine:

1. Listen once without speaking.
2. Listen again and notice the stressed part.
3. Say the word.
4. Put it into a short sentence.
5. Listen again and improve one small thing.

Do not stop because your accent is different. Focus on whether another person can understand you.

Speaking: Ask and explain

Work with a partner.

Student A chooses a word that is known or easy to guess, for example patient, tiny, repair or journey.

Student A reads a simple English definition but does not say the word.

Student B guesses the word and explains which clue helped.

Then change roles.

Useful language:

I think the word is ... because ...

The example helped me because ...

Can you give me one more hint?

I’m not sure yet. I’ll check the context.

Writing: Make a mini learner’s entry

Choose one familiar word. Write:

word + word class + simple English definition + one natural example

Example:

queue noun – a line of people waiting for something

We waited in a queue for the tickets.

Check your entry:

1. Is the definition shorter than the example?
2. Are the definition words easy enough?
3. Does the example show the meaning?
4. Is the word class correct?

Do not copy a long dictionary definition. Write in your own simple English.

Functional grammar: Word class helps you build sentences

A dictionary does not only tell you meaning. It also helps with grammar.

noun: often names a person, place, thing or idea

journey → The journey was long.

verb: often shows an action or state

borrow → Can I borrow your charger?

adjective: describes a noun or gives information after verbs such as be

quiet → The room is quiet.

This is enough for the first step. You do not need advanced grammar labels to use the entry well.

Mediation: Help without translating everything

Your partner does not understand the word crowded in this sentence:

The café was crowded, so we sat outside.

Do not translate the whole sentence. Explain the key idea in simple words, point to the context, or give a short German clue only if necessary.

Possible English help:

There are many people in the café.

That is mediation: you help another person understand the important meaning.

Feedback and improve

After a task, ask yourself:

Did I guess first?

Did I use context?

Did I read the whole short definition?

Did I check an example?

Did I use the word myself?

Improve only one thing at a time. Then use the word again in a new sentence.

Safe and smart tool use

Use learner’s dictionaries and school-approved tools. If you use AI for feedback, check whether the language level fits E7-E. AI feedback can be wrong or too difficult.

Your own text should stay your own text. Use feedback to improve it, not to replace it.

Use fictional profiles in tasks. Do not add private social-media information. Do not send recordings, names or personal data to external tools without permission.
