Notice: Small parts, big help

A prefix comes before a base word.

un- + happy = unhappy

A suffix comes after a base word.

help + -ful = helpful

The base word carries the main idea. A prefix or suffix can change the meaning or the job of the word.

A small toolbox

Word part	Simple idea	Example

Important: A word part gives you a clue, not always the full answer. Check the sentence too.

Understand: Word families

A word family has words with the same base.

help → helpful → helpless → helper

play → player → replay

use → useful → useless → user

You can use a known base word to understand a new family member.

Try this idea with English word families:

This is a help. Does that sound right? Maybe not.

This person helps. A helper is a person who helps.

The clue is the pattern, not only the picture.

Pronunciation focus

Do not try to sound "perfect". Be clear.

Say these word pairs slowly, then in a short sentence:

happy – unhappy: I was unhappy about the result.
use – useful: This map is useful.
help – helpful: Mia gave me a helpful hint.
play – replay: Can we replay the clip?

Focus: Keep the base word clear.

Then watch again and check your ideas.

Read the short story.

Leo opened a new game. The first task looked impossible. He reread the clue and found a helpful word: "replay". "Re-" means "again", he thought. So he played the short message again. Then he saw "careless" in a note. He knew "care", and "-less" gave him a clue: without enough care. Leo did not understand every word, but the word parts helped him continue.

Rule for smart guessing:

Notice a familiar base.
Notice a prefix or suffix.
Make a first guess.
Read the whole sentence.
Change your guess if it does not fit.

Work with a partner.

Student A says a sentence with a new word.

Student B asks: "How do you know?"

Student A answers: "I know ... and the prefix/suffix ... gives me a clue."

Example:

A: "I think rewrite means write again."

B: "How do you know?"

A: "I know write, and re- can mean again."

Recordings are optional. If you record yourself, keep the recording private unless your teacher gives a clear, safe task.

Read this short message from a fictional pupil.

Hi Sam,

Our class has a reading challenge this week. At first I felt unsure because some words were unfamiliar. Then I looked for small parts. "Un-" helped me with "unfriendly", and "-er" helped me with "speaker". I still checked the sentence because a word part is only one clue. This made the text easier.

Reading task: Find one prefix word and one suffix word. Explain one of them in English.

Write

Write a short message of 4–6 connected sentences.

Topic: A word clue that helped me

Use:

one word with un-, re- or dis-
one word with -ful, -less or -er
the phrase I think ... because ...

Support

Start like this: "Today I saw the word ... . I knew ... . The prefix/suffix ... gave me a clue."

Mediation: Help a German-speaking friend

Your friend asks: "Was bedeutet careless in this sentence: The careless player lost the map?"

Do not translate every word.

Explain the useful clue in simple German and give one English example.

Possible answer: care heißt etwa "Sorgfalt/Aufmerksamkeit". -less kann "ohne" bedeuten. careless beschreibt hier also jemanden, der nicht sorgfältig ist. Example: A careless mistake.
