E6 G - Guess words from pictures and context

Einleitung

Mini description: Guess unknown words from pictures, the sentence and known word parts. Open a translation only after you have tried these clues.

This course is for English, Class 6, G-level, Baden-Württemberg. Use simple English first. German help is always close.

Learning path: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

Rule for this course:

  1. Try English first: Look. Read. Think.
  2. Hint: Find one useful clue.
  3. German help: Nutze nur kurze Hilfen.
  4. Example: Check a similar example.
  5. Solution: Open the answer last.

I can goals

At the end, you can say:

  1. I can use a picture to guess a word.
  2. I can use words around an unknown word.
  3. I can use known word parts.
  4. I can explain my guess with a short sentence.
  5. I can check my guess before I use a translation.

Quick start: What can you already do?

Look at the picture. Do not open a dictionary.

Question: You read: “Ben puts his books into his backpack.”

What can backpack mean?

Try English first: Look at the picture and the word books.

Hint: You carry it on your back.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Bücher + Rücken + Bild.

Example: “My pencil is in my backpack.”

Solution: A backpack is a bag you carry on your back.

Notice: Pictures give clues

Pictures can help you before you translate.

Read:

It is raining. Mia puts on her raincoat.

What does raincoat mean?

Try English first: What do you see?

Hint: Find two parts: rain + coat.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Regen + Mantel/Jacke.

Example: “Take your raincoat. It is wet outside.”

Solution: A raincoat is a coat for rainy weather.

Now read:

The boys stay dry under an umbrella.

You may not know dry. Look at the picture and the words under an umbrella.

Guess: dry means “not wet”.

Understand: Context gives clues

A context clue is information near an unknown word.

You do not need every word. Find the important clue.

Example 1

Sam is thirsty. He drinks a big glass of water.

Clue: drinks water.

Guess: thirsty = needing a drink.

Example 2

The box is tiny. It fits in my hand.

Clue: fits in my hand.

Guess: tiny = very small.

Example 3

Lina is cheerful. She smiles and laughs.

Clue: smiles and laughs.

Guess: cheerful = happy.

Watch and notice

Watch a short part. Listen for the idea: Use clues around the unknown word.

While you watch:

  1. Stop after a short section.
  2. Name one clue type you saw.
  3. Say one example in simple English.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Du musst nicht jedes Wort im Video verstehen. Suche nur die Hauptidee.

Practise: Word parts

Some English words have parts you already know.

raincoat = rain + coat

backpack = back + pack

playground = play + ground

unhappy = un + happy

Use the parts as clues. Then check the whole sentence.

Important: A word part is only one clue. The sentence can help you check.

Picture practice: At the supermarket

Read:

Dad puts the apples, bread and milk into the shopping cart.

What does shopping cart mean?

Try English first: Look at the picture.

Hint: It is in a supermarket. It carries food.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Einkaufsort + Dinge transportieren.

Example: “The cart is full.”

Solution: A shopping cart is a cart used for shopping.

Listen: Hear a word, use the picture

Listen to the word.

Look again:

Say the word slowly: RAIN-coat.

The first part is stronger.

Goal: Be easy to understand. You do not need a perfect accent.

Try:

  1. Listen.
  2. Repeat once.
  3. Say the word in a sentence: “I need my raincoat.”

Recording yourself is optional. Keep recordings private unless your teacher gives a safe classroom task.

Speak: Explain your guess

Use one sentence starter.

Word bank: picture – sentence – clue – part – means – maybe

Sentence starters:

  1. “I think ___ means ___ because I can see ___.”
  2. “The sentence says ___, so maybe ___ means ___.”
  3. “I know the part ___, so I guess ___.”
  4. “I am not sure, but my best guess is ___.”

Partner task:

A: “What do you think tiny means?”

B: “I think it means very small because the box fits in one hand.”

A: “Good clue.”

Read: The rainy school day

Text

It is raining before school. Noah wears a raincoat and carries a backpack. At the door, he sees a small puddle. He walks around it because he wants to keep his shoes dry. In class, he feels cheerful because his friend is there.

Task: Guess the bold words before you use a translation.

Try English first: Use picture + sentence + word parts.

Hint: One word means “not wet”. One word means “happy”.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Achte auf Regen, Schuhe und Freund.

Example: “He wants to keep his shoes dry.” The rain is wet, so dry is the opposite.

Solution:

  1. raincoat = coat for rain
  2. backpack = bag carried on the back
  3. dry = not wet
  4. cheerful = happy

Short writing

Write 3 short sentences.

Use this frame:

Today I saw the word ___. I think it means ___. My clue was ___.

Example:

Today I saw the word tiny. I think it means very small. My clue was “fits in my hand”.

Check:

  1. Did you make your own sentence?
  2. Did you use one clue?
  3. Is your meaning clear?

Mini mediation

Your German-speaking friend asks:

“Was bedeutet raincoat?”

Do not translate the full English sentence. Give only the help your friend needs.

Possible answer:

“Das ist eine Jacke für Regen. Schau auf rain + coat.”

Then go back to English:

“Mia wears a raincoat.”

Feedback: Check your strategy

After a guess, ask:

  1. Does the picture fit?
  2. Does the sentence fit?
  3. Do known word parts fit?
  4. Can I explain my guess?
  5. Do I really need a translation now?

If two clues fit, your guess is stronger.

Use again: New mini challenge

Read:

Ella cannot find her lunchbox. She looks inside her backpack, under the desk and next to her chair.

Guess lunchbox.

Try English first: lunch + box.

Hint: You put food in it.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Mittagessen + Behälter.

Example: “My sandwich is in my lunchbox.”

Solution: A lunchbox is a box for your lunch.
