E5 E - My vocabulary learning strategy
E5 E - My vocabulary learning strategy
Mini-Beschreibung: Du vergleichst picture cards, audio, chunks, retrieval practice, mini quizzes und spaced repetition. Dann baust Du eine kurze Lernroutine, die zu Dir passt.
Zielgruppe: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 5, E-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.
Learning loop: see → hear → understand → repeat → use → feedback → use again
Einleitung
How do you learn a new English word? Do you only read it? Or do you see it, hear it, say it and use it?
In this aiMOOC, you try different vocabulary strategies. You use simple English as much as possible. Wenn Du Hilfe brauchst, nutze die deutschen Hinweise. Du musst nicht alles übersetzen.

Quick start: Look – listen – say.
Look at the word vocabulary. Then listen and say it.
Now listen to practice and repeat it.
Speak clearly. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als ein bestimmter Akzent.
Your goals
At the end, you can say:
| I can ... | Help |
|---|---|
| I can use picture cards, audio and chunks. | Ich kann drei Lernwege ausprobieren. |
| I can test myself without looking. | Ich kann Wörter aus dem Gedächtnis abrufen. |
| I can make a short vocabulary routine. | Ich kann einen kleinen Lernplan erstellen. |
Before you start: What do you already do?
Think for one minute.
| Question | Your answer |
|---|---|
| Do you use picture cards? | yes / sometimes / not yet |
| Do you listen and repeat? | yes / sometimes / not yet |
| Do you test yourself without looking? | yes / sometimes / not yet |
| Do you review words on different days? | yes / sometimes / not yet |
There is no perfect answer. You are finding a method that helps you learn and use English.
Six useful words and chunks
Learn only a few new items now.
| English | Simple help | Example |
|---|---|---|
| picture card | Bildkarte | I use a picture card. |
| listen | hören | Listen to the word. |
| repeat | nachsprechen | Repeat the chunk. |
| remember | sich erinnern | I remember the word. |
| review | wiederholen | I review on Friday. |
| Can I try again? | nützlicher Chunk | Can I try again? |
Tip: A word is easier to use when you meet it in a short sentence or chunk, not only as one item on a list.
Strategy 1: Picture cards
Look at the picture. Say the English word. Then check.
Picture cards are useful for concrete words such as apple, bike, dog, pencil or happy. The picture gives you a meaning clue.
A good card can have:
- a picture on the front
- the English word or chunk on the back
- one short example sentence
Do not put too much text on one card.
Mini practice: Cover the answer. Look at the picture. Say the word. Then turn the card and check.
Strategy 2: Audio and repeating

Listen twice. Repeat twice. Then use the word.
Audio helps you connect spelling and sound. It also helps you notice stress and rhythm.
Try this short pattern:
listen → pause → repeat → check → repeat again
You can use short audio more than once. You do not need to sound exactly like another speaker. Your goal is to be understandable.
A short listening-and-speaking model
Mia: How do you learn new words?
Sam: I listen and repeat. Then I use the word in a sentence.
Mia: Do you review the words later?
Sam: Yes. I review them the next day.
Your turn: Read the dialogue aloud. Then change one line. For example: I use picture cards.

Strategy 3: Learn chunks
A chunk is a useful group of words that often goes together. You can learn and use it as one unit.
Examples:
- Can I try again?
- I don't know yet.
- What does ... mean?
- I use ... to learn.
- My best strategy is ... because ...
Chunks help you speak without building every sentence word by word.
Grammar in context: Use the present simple to talk about habits.
I use picture cards. I listen after school. I review on Friday.
You can also use frequency words:
I usually use audio. I sometimes use cards.
Strategy 4: Retrieval practice
Close the book. Look away. Try to remember.
Retrieval practice means: You try to get the word or chunk out of your memory before you look at the answer. This is different from reading the same list again and again.
A simple cycle:
| Step | Do this |
|---|---|
| Try | Say or write the answer without looking. |
| Check | Look at the correct answer. |
| Fix | Correct one mistake. |
| Try again | Say or write it one more time. |
Mini quizzes can be retrieval practice when you answer first and check after.
Research on learning and memory shows that active retrieval can support later remembering better than only reading again. Feedback is useful because it helps you correct mistakes.
Strategy 5: Spaced repetition
Do not learn everything in one long session. Review again on different days.

The graph is a simple model: without review, memory can get weaker. Repeated reviews can help you remember for longer.
A simple start plan, not a magic formula:
| Time | What to do |
|---|---|
| Today | Learn 5–8 words or chunks. |
| Tomorrow | Test yourself again. |
| Three days later | Review the difficult items. |
| One week later | Use the words in speaking or writing. |
The best spacing depends on your goal and on how well you know the words. Keep your plan short and realistic.
Compare the strategies
| Strategy | Good for | Try this | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Picture cards | Meaning and visual memory | Look, say, check | Do not only recognise the picture |
| Audio | Sound and pronunciation | Listen, pause, repeat | Do not only listen passively |
| Chunks | Speaking and useful phrases | Learn a short phrase | Use it in a real sentence |
| Retrieval practice | Active remembering | Cover the answer first | Check after your try |
| Mini quizzes | Fast practice and feedback | Answer before checking | Learn from mistakes |
| Spaced repetition | Remembering over time | Review on several days | Avoid one very long session |
A media tip
This British Council video gives ideas for learning vocabulary. You do not need to understand every word. First watch a short part and listen for ideas you already know.
While watching: Listen for one strategy you want to try.
Optional: This BBC Learning English lesson gives more vocabulary-learning ideas. It is longer and can be used in short sections.
Build your personal routine
Use the learning loop:
see → hear → understand → repeat → use → feedback → use again
Here is one short example routine:
| Time | Action | English instruction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 minute | Bildkarte ansehen | Look and guess. |
| 1 minute | Audio hören | Listen twice. |
| 1 minute | Nachsprechen | Repeat the word and the chunk. |
| 1 minute | Abrufen | Close the answer. Remember it. |
| 1 minute | Anwenden | Make one sentence. |
| 1 minute | Prüfen | Check and correct. |
| next day | erneut verwenden | Use it again. |
Your plan: Choose 5–8 words or chunks. Keep the session short. Add a review day. Change the routine if one step does not help you.
Mini speaking task
Use these sentence starters:
I learn words with ...
I usually ...
My best strategy is ... because ...
Next time, I want to ...
Speak for about 30–45 seconds. A recording is optional. Keep recordings private unless you and your teacher or family decide to share them.
Mini writing task
Write 4–5 connected sentences about your strategy.
Example:
I use picture cards for new words. Then I listen and repeat. I test myself without looking. I review difficult words the next day. This helps me use the words in class.
Now write your own version. Do not copy the example word for word.
Safe and smart use of digital tools
Digital tools can help with pictures, audio, quizzes or example sentences. Keep your own language work important.
- Make your first try yourself.
- Check AI suggestions with your book, teacher or a trusted dictionary.
- Do not upload private voice recordings, photos or personal data without a clear reason and permission.
- Use fictional names and data for practice tasks.
- If a tool gives a strange sentence, change it or do not use it.
Mini review
Without looking back, answer these questions aloud:
- What is a chunk?
- What does retrieval practice mean?
- When will you review your words again?
- Which strategy will you try first?
- Say one sentence with I usually ...
Then look back and check.
I-can-Check
| I can ... | Check |
|---|---|
| I can explain one vocabulary strategy. | ☐ yes ☐ almost ☐ not yet |
| I can use a chunk in a short dialogue. | ☐ yes ☐ almost ☐ not yet |
