E10 M - Express complex time relations clearly

Mini-Beschreibung: Use familiar tense forms and time expressions to make present, past, earlier past and future relationships clear in short texts. You work mainly in English, understand first, respond, analyse, communicate, get feedback, revise and transfer. The level is B1-oriented for Klasse 10, M-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Course path: English first → understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer.

Media mission: Watch the first 90 seconds. Then say in one sentence: What makes the present perfect different from a finished past event? Do not translate the whole video.

I can – Lernziele

After this course, you can:

  1. order events: I can show what happens now, what happened before, what had happened earlier and what will happen later.
  2. choose tense forms: I can choose a familiar tense form because of meaning, not only because of a signal word.
  3. use time expressions: I can use since, for, ago, already, yet, before, after, by the time, while, soon and similar expressions safely.
  4. speak clearly: I can explain a short timeline and react to questions.
  5. write clearly: I can revise a short text so that the sequence of events is easy to follow.
  6. mediate by purpose: I can pass on relevant time information for a specific person and purpose.

Vorwissen – Quick check

Complete these mentally or on paper before you continue.

Situation Your first choice Why?
A routine that is true now simple present regular or general
A finished event yesterday simple past finished past time
An experience connected to now present perfect past event with present relevance
One past event happened before another past event past perfect earlier past
A plan or arrangement for next week going to / present continuous future intention or arrangement

Check yourself: If two rows are difficult, keep the timeline beside you while you work.

Understand time relations

Key idea: First choose a reference point. Then ask: Is the event happening at that point, before it, even earlier, or after it?

Time relation Typical form Short example
present / regular simple present I check the schedule every morning.
happening around now present continuous I am preparing the presentation now.
finished past simple past I sent the email yesterday.
past connected to now present perfect I have already sent the email.
earlier past before a past reference point past perfect I had sent the email before the meeting started.
future plan, arrangement or prediction going to / present continuous / will We are meeting on Friday. / It will probably take an hour.

M-Niveau focus: In Klasse 10, you should use familiar forms with more independence and accuracy. Future progressive and future perfect are useful mainly for recognition at this level; use them only when they genuinely help your meaning.

Present perfect and simple past

Use simple past with a finished past time: yesterday, last week, in 2025, two days ago. Use present perfect when the exact finished time is not the focus and the result, experience or period still matters now.

Compare:

  1. I visited the careers fair last Friday. → finished time
  2. I have visited three careers fairs so far. → experience up to now
  3. She has worked on the project since Monday. → period from past to now

Listening task: Note one difference between ago and before. Then create one example of your own.

Earlier past: past perfect

Use past perfect when you need to make an earlier past event clear.

When Leo arrived at the station, the train had already left.

Timeline: train leaves → Leo arrives → now.

You do not need past perfect in every past sentence. Use it when the order could be unclear or when you move back from a past reference point.

Viewing task: Find one example where the speaker moves from a later past event to an earlier past event. Retell the sequence in two short sentences.

Future relationships

English expresses future meaning in several ways.

Meaning Useful form Example
prediction or spontaneous decision will I think the interview will be challenging.
intention or evidence-based prediction going to I am going to revise the report tonight.
fixed personal arrangement present continuous We are meeting the team at ten.
timetable or schedule simple present The train leaves at 8:12.

Important: After future time linkers such as when, before, after, as soon as and until, English often uses a present form: I will call you when I arrive.

Look ahead: future perfect as recognition

At M-Niveau, future perfect is mainly a form to recognise. It shows that something will be completed before a future reference point.

By Friday, we will have finished the first draft.

Do not force this form into every future text. Clear communication is more important than showing a rare tense.

Listening and Viewing

Task A – understand: Watch one embedded video without subtitles. Write three key words.

Task B – check: Watch again with subtitles if needed. Add one time expression and one tense form you heard.

Task C – respond: Explain the main rule in English in 20–30 seconds. Recording is optional. If you record, keep it private unless you actively choose to share it.

Reading

Read for sequence, not for translation.

Today is Sunday. Tomorrow, fictional student Maya is starting a one-week work-experience project at a design studio. She has already read the safety information, but she has not met the team yet. Last Friday, she received an email with the schedule. Before the email arrived, she had prepared a list of questions because she wanted to understand the job better. On Monday morning, she is meeting her supervisor at nine, and the studio tour starts at 9:15. While they are walking through the studio, Maya plans to take short notes. After she has seen the main work areas, she will write a brief message to her teacher. On Thursday, she is meeting a trainee to ask about vocational training. By Friday afternoon, Maya will have collected enough information for a short class report. She will send the report only after she has checked the timeline.

Reading tasks:

  1. Which event happened first: preparing the questions or receiving the email?
  2. Which sentence connects a past action to the present?
  3. Which future event is a fixed arrangement?
  4. Find one phrase that marks a deadline in the future.
  5. Rewrite one sentence with a different time expression without changing the order of events.

Kontextwortschatz: time expressions

Function Useful expressions Example
now / current period now, currently, at the moment, this week We are currently checking the draft.
past to present since, for, already, yet, so far I have worked on it for two hours.
finished past yesterday, last week, ago, in 2025 We met two days ago.
sequence in the past before, after, by the time, when, while By the time I arrived, they had started.
future tomorrow, next week, soon, later, by Friday We are meeting again next week.
linking stages first, then, meanwhile, afterwards, finally First we checked the source; afterwards we revised the text.

Strategy: A time expression is a clue, not a mechanical rule. Check the meaning of the whole sentence.

Pronunciation and fluent speaking

In natural standard English, contractions are frequent: I’ve, we’ve, she’s, I’ll, we’re. You do not need to copy a specific accent. Aim for clear stress, clear time words and understandable sentence endings.

Chunk practice:

  1. By the time we arrived ...
  2. I have already ...
  3. We are meeting ... next ...
  4. I will call you when ...

Say the chunk, pause briefly at the time marker, then finish the sentence. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.

Speaking

Pair task: Timeline negotiation. You and a partner receive these fictional project facts: research on Monday, interview on Tuesday, draft on Wednesday, feedback on Thursday, final version on Friday.

  1. Explain the timeline in English.
  2. Add one earlier-past event that happened before Monday.
  3. Change one future plan and negotiate a new arrangement.
  4. React spontaneously to: What had happened before the problem started? and What are you doing next?

Useful language: First ..., By the time ..., Before that ..., We had already ..., How about ...?, That works for me., Then we’ll ...

Writing

Short writing task: Write 120–160 words about a fictional school project, work-experience week or application process. Use at least four clear time relationships: present, finished past, earlier past and future.

Possible text type: informal email, formal email, short report, article paragraph or opinion paragraph with a source reference.

Keep your own text: If you use a digital checking tool or AI, compare every suggestion with your meaning. Do not replace your whole text. Verify factual claims and sources before you use them.

Mediation

Situation: A German teacher sends this note: Der Besprechungstermin wurde auf Donnerstag verschoben. Vor dem Termin sollen alle den überarbeiteten Entwurf lesen. Wer am Donnerstag fehlt, schickt die Rückmeldung bis Freitagmittag.

Task: Give the relevant information in English to a fictional exchange partner who needs to plan their week. Do not translate every word. Focus on purpose, addressee and time order.

Possible opening: The meeting has been moved to Thursday. Before we meet, ...

Functional grammar: build the timeline

Use this three-step method:

  1. Reference point: What time are we talking about?
  2. Relation: Is the event simultaneous, earlier, even earlier, or later?
  3. Form + time expression: Choose the form that makes the relation clear.

Example: The presentation started at ten. We had tested the laptop before that. Now we are writing the report, and we are presenting the results again next week.

This is better than choosing forms only from isolated signal words.

Help – compact support

If you mean ... Try ...
finished past at a clear past time simple past
past event with relevance now present perfect
earlier than another past event past perfect
arrangement already fixed present continuous
prediction or decision now will
deadline before a future point by + time point; recognise future perfect when used

Self-help questions: When exactly? Is the time finished? What is my reference point? Which event came first? Is the future event planned, arranged or predicted?

Feedback and revision

Give feedback in this order:

  1. Meaning first: Can you follow the timeline?
  2. Evidence: Underline the words that show the time relation.
  3. Form: Check the tense only where the meaning needs it.
  4. Revision: Change one sentence, then reread the whole paragraph.
  5. Transfer: Use the improved pattern in a new sentence.

Peer-feedback sentence starters: I can follow the order because ... / This point is unclear because ... / A clearer time expression could be ... / I would keep this sentence because ...

Error analysis

Correct the meaning, not only the verb.

Problem Better version Why?
I have met her yesterday. I met her yesterday. yesterday is a finished past time
When I arrived, they already left. When I arrived, they had already left. leaving happened earlier than arrival
I will text you when I will arrive. I will text you when I arrive. present form in the future time clause
By Friday I finish the report. By Friday, I will have finished the report. or I will finish the report by Friday. the deadline must be clear; choose the simpler form if it is enough

Your turn: Create one realistic mistake, explain why it is unclear, and revise it.

Prüfungsbezug Baden-Württemberg – Stand 02.10.2026

This course supports clear speaking and writing, but it is not a substitute for the official examination documents. For the 2027 Realschulabschluss, the official Ministry page lists the written English exam for 3 May 2027 and the communication examination window for 22 February to 2 March 2027. The current RSAPO states that the written compulsory-foreign-language examination lasts between 150 and 210 minutes and that the communication examination lasts about 15 minutes per student.

Official checks:

  1. Kultusministerium Baden-Württemberg: Prüfungstermine
  2. Realschulabschlussprüfungsordnung
  3. Bildungsplan Englisch Klasse 10: Grammatik

Before using this course for exam preparation, check the official pages again because dates, formats or detailed rules can change.

Transfer

Apply the same timeline thinking in new text types:

  1. formal or informal email: clarify what has happened, what is happening now and what will happen next.
  2. fictional application: connect experience, earlier preparation and future goals.
  3. report: order events and explain causes or consequences.
  4. article: move between background, current situation and future outlook.
  5. opinion: use a dated source correctly and separate past evidence from present judgement.
