E10 G - I can speak and mediate – English 10

Mini-description: Show in several language situations that you can present, discuss, ask for clarification, give reasons for an opinion and mediate important information between German and English.

Target group: Klasse 10, G-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg.

Time: about 6 × 45 minutes plus an optional transfer task.

Course path: English first → understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer.

Use English first. German is a support language and is used when mediation needs it. Do not translate complete texts unless a task clearly asks for it.

Einleitung

This aiMOOC helps you communicate safely and clearly. You work with short, structured texts, clear tasks, useful phrases and repeated listening. The main goal is successful communication, not perfect accent imitation.

I can ... Hilfe
I can give a short presentation. clear beginning – two or three points – ending
I can take part in a discussion. opinion – reason – response – question
I can ask for clarification. Could you say that again, please?
I can explain my opinion. I think ... because ...
I can mediate key information. select – simplify – explain
I can improve my own language. feedback – repair – revise

Vorwissen: Quick start

Look at the picture. Speak for 30 seconds: What makes a speaker easy to understand?

Then choose two sentence starters and complete them orally:

Start Your idea
In my opinion, ... ...
One reason is ... ...
I agree because ... ...
I am not sure. Could you ...? ...

Listening and Viewing

Viewing 1: Giving an opinion

First viewing – gist: What are the speakers doing: describing, discussing or telling a story?

Second viewing – useful language: Write down three phrases for opinion, agreement or disagreement.

Third step – respond: Choose one idea from the video and answer with one sentence of your own.

Help: Pause after one idea. Replay short parts. Use subtitles only after the first attempt if you need them.

Viewing 2: A speaking model

Watch a short part with a photo talk or discussion.

  1. Gist: What is the task?
  2. Detail: Note two useful expressions.
  3. Strategy: How do the speakers keep the conversation going?

Do not copy every sentence. Notice useful language and use it in a new situation.

Reading

Fictional school event: One afternoon, many tasks

All people and situations in this text are fictional.

A Year 10 class is planning an English activity afternoon for younger students. One group will welcome visitors. A second group will give a one-minute presentation about the programme. A third group will answer questions.

The class has one problem: some visitors understand English well, while others may need short explanations in German. The students decide not to translate every word. They will listen first, choose the important information and then explain it in a clear way.

During the planning meeting, one student says that the programme should include a quiz. Another student prefers a short video. They disagree, but they ask questions and give reasons. In the end, they choose both: a short video first and a quiz afterwards.

Reading task: Find the problem, two solutions and the final decision.

Kontextwortschatz

Function Useful English
give an opinion I think ... / In my view ...
give a reason because ... / One reason is ...
agree I agree. / That makes sense.
disagree politely I see your point, but ...
ask What do you think?
clarify Could you explain that, please?
check Do you mean ...?
structure First ... Then ... Finally ...
mediate The important point is ...
compromise How about ...?

Choose five phrases. Use each phrase in a short spoken sentence.

Aussprache und Verständlichkeit

Your goal is clear speech. You do not need to sound like a native speaker.

Practise thought groups:

I think / the school event / should start earlier.

Practise sentence stress:

I THINK the QUIZ is a GOOD idea.

Practise clarification with friendly intonation:

Could you say that again, please?

Say each line twice: first slowly, then at a natural moderate pace. Ask a partner only one question: Was I easy to understand?

Speaking

Present: One-minute talk

Prepare a one-minute talk about one familiar topic: a hobby, a school project, a future plan or a useful app.

Use this structure:

Part Sentence help
Start Today I’d like to talk about ...
Point 1 First, ...
Point 2 Another important point is ...
Example For example, ...
End To sum up, ...

Use notes, not a complete script.

Discuss: React, ask, explain

Topic: Should a class project end with a presentation, a video or a poster?

Work in pairs for about three minutes.

  1. Opinion: Give your choice.
  2. Reason: Give at least one reason.
  3. Ask: Ask your partner one question.
  4. Respond: Agree or disagree politely.
  5. Compromise: Try to agree on one plan.

Support: I think ... because ... / What do you think? / I see your point, but ... / How about ...?

Clarify: Keep the conversation going

Use one card at a time:

Situation Useful line
You did not hear. Sorry, could you say that again?
You do not understand one word. What does ... mean?
You are not sure. Do you mean ...?
You need an example. Could you give an example?
You need time. Let me think for a moment.

Mini-dialogue:

A: I think we should change the plan. B: Do you mean the time or the activity? A: The activity. I think a quiz would be easier. B: Okay. Why do you think so?

Change the topic and perform the dialogue again.

Mediation

Mediation means: understand the situation, select relevant information and pass it on appropriately. It is not a full translation exercise.

German → English

Situation: An English-speaking guest needs the key information from this German school notice.

German source: Am Donnerstag findet der Projektnachmittag nicht in der Aula, sondern in Raum 204 statt. Beginn ist um 13:30 Uhr. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler sollen Kopfhörer und einen Stift mitbringen. Getränke sind vor Ort. Wer um 15:15 Uhr einen Bus erreichen muss, kann die letzte Aufgabe früher beenden. Eine Anmeldung ist nicht nötig.

Task: Explain the important information in four or five simple English sentences.

Use this plan:

Step Question
Select What does the guest really need?
Simplify Can you use frequent words?
Connect Can you use first, also, but or because?
Check Did you keep time, place and special instructions correct?

Do not translate every sentence.

English → German

English message: Hi! Please tell your class that the workshop will start at 1:30 instead of 1:00. We meet in room 204. Everyone should bring headphones. The first task is individual, and after that we work in pairs.

Task: Vermittle einer deutschsprachigen Mitschülerin oder einem deutschsprachigen Mitschüler die wichtigen Änderungen in zwei bis drei deutschen Sätzen.

Check: What changed? Where do you meet? What should everyone bring?

Writing

Choose one short writing task.

Text type Task Length
E-mail Write a follow-up message after a group discussion. 80–100 words
Short report Report what your group decided and why. 90–120 words
Opinion Give your view on a familiar school topic and support it with reasons. 80–100 words
Simple application Use a fictional profile and write a short application for a fictional school helper role. 90–120 words

For the application task, use only invented information. Do not use your real address, phone number, date of birth or other personal data.

Funktionale Grammatik

Grammar supports communication. It is not the final goal.

Goal Language Level of use
ask clearly Could you explain that? / Do you mean ...? productive
give reasons because / so / but / however productive
talk about an unreal past result If we had planned earlier, we would have had more time. guided productive practice
recognise complex ordering sequence of adverbials receptive
recognise reduced clauses infinitive and participle constructions instead of subordinate clauses receptive
recognise selected future and progressive forms present perfect progressive, future progressive, future perfect receptive

Accuracy step: First make the message clear. Then check one target at a time: question form, verb form, connector.

Hilfen

Use only as much help as you need.

Help level Support
A picture + key words
B sentence starters
C model structure
D partner rehearsal before speaking

Emergency phrases: Let me think. / I’m not sure, but ... / Could you repeat that? / Can I say it in a simpler way?

Feedback und Fehleranalyse

Give short, useful feedback.

Focus Feedback question
Message Was the main idea clear?
Interaction Did the speaker react and ask?
Mediation Were the important facts selected correctly?
Language Which one language point should be improved next?

Feedback formula: Two things that worked + one next step.

Examples of repair:

First version Better version
I am agree. I agree.
What you mean? What do you mean?
I think this because it is easier. I think this is better because it is easier.
He say the meeting starts later. He says the meeting starts later.

Revise your own version. Keep the first version so that you can see your progress.

Medienkompetenz und KI-Check

Before you use information from a website or an AI tool, ask:

  1. Source: Who gives the information?
  2. Date: Is it current enough for the task?
  3. Cross-check: Can you confirm the key fact elsewhere?
  4. Own work: Can you explain every sentence in your submitted text?

Do not paste personal data, private recordings or real applications into external tools without clear permission.

Transfer

Scenario: International project afternoon

You have three jobs:

  1. Present: Give a one-minute introduction to a fictional project.
  2. Discuss: Decide with a partner which activity should come first.
  3. Mediate: Explain three important details from a short German notice in English.
  4. Revise: Use feedback to improve one part and repeat it.

Your final version should be clearer than your first version, not simply longer.

Lernkontrolle
