E10 E - Future progressive and future perfect in context
E10 E - Future progressive and future perfect in context
Einleitung
In this aiMOOC you learn to recognise two future forms, understand their meaning in context and explain the difference. The main focus is receptive: you do not have to use the forms freely. Productive tasks are short, optional or strongly supported.
Mini goal: Erkenne future progressive und future perfect sicher rezeptiv, vergleiche ihre Bedeutung und verwende sie nur in sinnvoll stark gestützten Erweiterungsaufgaben.

Media start – watch for meaning, not for every word.
Before you watch: What is more important in these two sentences – an activity in progress or a result already completed?
A: At 8 p.m. on Friday, Maya will be presenting the project. B: By 8 p.m. on Friday, Maya will have finished the project.
Curriculum focus
This course follows the Baden-Württemberg focus for English as a first foreign language in class 10: future progressive and future perfect are primarily learned receptively. At E level, you work independently with context, authentic learning media, text comparison, evidence and source checking.
Learning path: English first → understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer.
No full translation is required.
I-can goals
| I can ... | Focus |
|---|---|
| recognise will be + -ing in a sentence | future progressive |
| recognise will have + past participle | future perfect |
| explain whether a future action is in progress or already completed | meaning |
| use time markers and context as evidence | reading / listening |
| compare two short sources and check whether their grammar explanations agree | media literacy |
| revise a short supported answer after feedback | communication |

What you already know
You already know common ways of talking about the future such as will, going to and present forms with future meaning. You also know the idea of progressive as an action in progress and perfect as a form that connects an action to a reference point.
Quick recall:
progressive → focus on an activity around a time perfect → focus on what is completed before or by a reference point
Input: Two viewpoints on the future

Imagine a school project day in 2030. All people and profiles below are fictional.
Future progressive: At 10 a.m., Lena will be interviewing visitors. The speaker looks at a future moment and sees an activity in progress.
Future perfect: By 10 a.m., Lena will have prepared the interview questions. The speaker looks at a future point and sees an action as completed before or by then.
Form map
| Form | Structure | Meaning question | Typical context clues |
|---|---|---|---|
| future progressive | will + be + verb-ing | What will be in progress at that future moment? | at 6 p.m. tomorrow, this time next week, when ... |
| future perfect | will + have + past participle | What will already be complete by that future point? | by Friday, by then, by the time ... |
Important: Time expressions are clues, not automatic rules. Always read or listen to the whole context.

Listening and viewing: future progressive

Watch the short BBC Learning English video once without stopping. On the second viewing, listen for the form will be + -ing.
Listening focus: Which idea does the speaker connect with the future progressive?
- an activity already finished before a future point
- an activity in progress at a future point
- a past habit
After watching, write only one short evidence sentence in English.
Listening and viewing: future perfect
Watch for the structure will have + past participle and for a future reference point.
Viewing focus: Pause after an example. Mark: future point → completed action

Reading in context
Read this fictional project update.
Future Skills Day – 14 June
At 9:00, the media team will be testing microphones in the hall. At the same time, two students will be checking the captions for the video clips. By 10:00, the team will have tested all microphones and will have checked the first three clips. At 11:30, visitors will be using the media stations. By lunchtime, the organisers will have collected feedback from the first groups.
Understand first:
- Underline forms with will be + -ing.
- Circle forms with will have + past participle.
- Draw an arrow to the future time that helps you understand each form.
- Explain one contrast in English using the frame: At ..., the action is in progress. By ..., the action is complete.
Meaning contrast
| Context | Better interpretation |
|---|---|
| At 4 p.m., Sam will be editing the video. | The editing is viewed as in progress at 4 p.m. |
| By 4 p.m., Sam will have edited the video. | The editing is viewed as completed by 4 p.m. |
| This time tomorrow, we will be travelling home. | The journey is viewed as happening around that future time. |
| By this time tomorrow, we will have arrived home. | Arrival is viewed as completed before or by that future point. |
The grammar changes the viewpoint, not just the verb ending.
Context vocabulary
| Word / phrase | Helpful meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| deadline | latest time something should be finished | by the deadline |
| in progress | still happening | the task is in progress |
| complete | finished | the report is complete |
| by then | no later than that future point | by then, we will have finished |
| this time tomorrow | at the same clock time tomorrow | this time tomorrow, we will be travelling |
| evidence | information that supports an interpretation | give evidence from the sentence |
Pronunciation and listening clues
In fast speech, I will often becomes I'll, and will not becomes won't. In future perfect, have may be unstressed. Do not depend on hearing every word. Listen for a cluster:
will / 'll + be + -ing will / 'll + have + past participle
Your goal is intelligibility and recognition, not accent imitation.
Speaking: supported response

Use one of these frames. You do not need to invent a complex sentence.
Frame A: The sentence uses the future progressive because the action will be ______ at ______. Frame B: The sentence uses the future perfect because the action will be ______ by ______. Frame C: Sentence 1 focuses on ______, whereas sentence 2 focuses on ______.
Recordings are optional and should remain private unless your teacher has arranged a safe school platform.
Writing: guided extension
Choose one pair and complete it.
At 7 p.m. tomorrow, Alex will be ______. By 7 p.m. tomorrow, Alex will have ______.
or
This time next week, our fictional team will be ______. By the end of next week, our fictional team will have ______.
Keep your original version. After feedback, revise only what improves meaning, grammar or clarity.
Mediation: meaning for an audience
A younger student asks in German what the difference is. Do not translate every sentence. Explain the purpose briefly:
future progressive → Was wird zu einem zukünftigen Zeitpunkt gerade laufen? future perfect → Was wird bis zu einem zukünftigen Zeitpunkt abgeschlossen sein?
Then give one short English example of each.
Analyse and source check
At E level, do not accept a grammar explanation only because it appears in a video or online exercise.
Use this three-step check:
- Claim: What does the source say the form means?
- Evidence: Which example supports that claim?
- Cross-check: Does a second reliable source explain the same core meaning?
Compare the BBC videos with the British Council explanation. If wording differs, identify the shared core idea.
AI note: If you use an AI tool in a school-approved setting, check grammar claims against named sources, keep your own draft and record important changes. Do not upload real applications, private recordings, names or personal profiles to external tools without permission.
Error analysis
| Sentence | What to notice | Better analysis |
|---|---|---|
| By 5 p.m., I will have finish the report. | after have a past participle is needed | will have finished |
| At 5 p.m., I will have finished the report. | completion is viewed before or by 5 p.m. | future perfect |
| At 5 p.m., I will be finishing the report. | the action is viewed as in progress around 5 p.m. | future progressive |
| The door will be closed at 5 p.m. | will be + past participle can be passive, not progressive | use form and context together |
Feedback and revision
Give feedback with three short prompts:
Meaning: Does the answer identify in-progress or completed meaning? Evidence: Does it point to a future time or context clue? Form: Does it correctly identify will be + -ing or will have + past participle?
Then revise one sentence only. Precision is more important than adding difficult vocabulary.
Can-do check
| Check | Yes / almost / not yet |
|---|---|
| I can spot will be + -ing in a text. | |
| I can spot will have + past participle in a text. | |
| I can explain the meaning contrast with a future reference point. | |
| I can support my interpretation with context evidence. | |
| I can compare two short grammar explanations critically. | |
| I can improve a supported answer after feedback. |
