ABI LF - Tandemprüfung erfolgreich gestalten

Mini-description: Train turn-taking, active listening, referring to your partner, inviting a response and developing ideas together. The goal is not two polished mini-speeches next to each other, but genuine interaction. Zielgruppe: Englisch als fortgeführte Fremdsprache im Leistungsfach der Kursstufe Baden-Württemberg.

Einleitung

This aiMOOC prepares you for the interaction demands of the English communication exam and for high-level discussion in the Leistungsfach. English comes first. German support is brief and comes later, after context, word formation, visualisation, an English explanation and dictionary work.

Current checkpoint, 2 October 2026: For the school year 2026/27, the current official reference is the Abitur 2027 for general upper-secondary schools in Baden-Württemberg. The Ministry currently lists the 2027 guide, the Facherlass dated 9 September 2025 and the assessment/correction guidelines dated 7 July 2025. Always re-check the documents for your own exam year.

  1. Kultusministerium: current Abitur information
  2. Official Facherlass 2027
  3. Official assessment and correction guidelines 2027

For English LF 2027, the official focus includes On the Move: Migration and Cross-Cultural Encounters plus the USA and UK topic fields. This course does not reproduce required literary texts or copyrighted film scenes. It uses original practice material and legally embedded media instead.

Media entry: What does real interaction look like?

The Cambridge video above is not the Baden-Württemberg Abi format. Use it only as observation material. From the collaborative section, notice how speakers connect ideas, react to each other and move toward a shared outcome.

Observation mission: Find one moment where a speaker refers to the partner, one moment where a response is invited, and one moment where an idea is jointly developed. Do not judge accent first; judge interaction.

I-can goals

I can ... Evidence in my speaking
take turns naturally I enter, hold and release the floor without dominating.
listen actively I paraphrase, react and use information my partner has just introduced.
refer to my partner I make the link explicit: Building on your point ...
invite a response I ask an open, relevant question and leave space for the answer.
co-develop a line of thought I combine, qualify, challenge or extend ideas instead of switching to a prepared point.
perform at LF depth I connect material, evidence and implications and move into AFB II/III reasoning.

Vorwissen

Before training, answer these questions in English in short notes.

  1. Turn-taking: How do you know when a turn is finished?
  2. Active listening: What is the difference between hearing and showing that you have understood?
  3. Diskussion: Which phrases help you disagree without closing the conversation?
  4. Argumentation: How can you connect a claim to evidence and consequence?
  5. Kommunikationsstrategie: What can you do if you do not know one word?

Abi format: know what you are training

According to the official 2027 guidelines for general Gymnasien, the communication exam takes place in the fourth term, before the written results are announced, and can be an individual or tandem exam. In the tandem format, preparation is individual. The individual exam lasts at least 15 minutes in total, with about 5 minutes of monologue and about 10 minutes of dialogue with the teacher.

Phase Tandem format 2027 What matters here
Preparation 15 minutes Work silently on your own task. You may make notes. A monolingual and a bilingual dictionary are allowed; no other aids.
Monologue A about 5 minutes Structured, material-based speaking while B listens.
Monologue B about 5 minutes Structured, material-based speaking while A listens.
Dialogue about 10 minutes Discuss the task together and continue independently.
Total at least 20 minutes Each candidate should have enough opportunity to demonstrate competence.

The listening partner may take notes during the other monologue. This is useful because the dialogue should build on information from both monologues.

Assessment 2027: The official rubric evaluates three areas: task fulfilment/content, strategy/interactivity/discourse ability and language performance. Strong interaction actively advances the dialogue and responds consistently to the partner.

Written exam and communication exam are not the same thing

For English LF 2027, the written component comprises listening and writing tasks; the communication exam is the oral component of the written Abitur examination. In the overall score for this English Abitur examination, listening counts 20 percent, writing 55 percent and the communication exam 25 percent. Train both, but do not confuse their performance modes.

The written exam rewards sustained individual processing of unfamiliar material. The tandem dialogue rewards responsive thinking under time pressure: picking up, challenging, combining and negotiating ideas with another person.

The interaction engine

Think of a strong tandem dialogue as a loop:

Move Purpose Useful English
Listen Identify the partner's actual point. So your main concern is ...
Refer Make the connection visible. Building on what you said about ...
Develop Add, qualify or reframe. That would also mean that ...
Invite Hand the floor back meaningfully. How would you weigh that against ...?
Negotiate Move toward a shared conclusion. Could we combine both ideas by ...?

A tandem exam is strongest when this loop happens repeatedly. Prepared language helps, but interaction must remain connected to what has actually been said.

Turn-taking

Turn-taking is more than waiting. You need to recognise cues, enter at a relevant point and release the floor. Useful signals include Can I pick up on that?, Before we move on ..., Would you like to add something? and That brings us to ....

Avoid two extremes: dominating the dialogue and becoming so polite that you never create a meaningful turn.

Active listening and partner reference

Active listening means listening for meaning and then making that understanding visible. A short paraphrase is often stronger than a generic yes.

Weak: Yes, I agree. My next point is cost.

Stronger: I agree with your point that access matters. If we take that seriously, the low-cost option becomes more convincing. Do you think quality would suffer?

The second version refers, develops and invites.

Inviting response and co-developing

Open invitations create interaction: How do you see that?, Which criterion should matter most?, Would that change your view?, Can we combine these two options?

A real response should change what comes next. If your partner gives a reason, use it. Do not simply return to the next item on your private list.

Listening / Viewing

The British Council discussion clip is useful for observing exam-style discussion behaviour. Watch it twice.

  1. First viewing: focus on who links to the other speaker and how.
  2. Second viewing: note one example each of agreeing, disagreeing, inviting and negotiating.
  3. Transfer: replace one generic response with a phrase that refers to the exact content of the partner's previous turn.

Use the BBC clip to collect language for polite disagreement. Then add one sentence that keeps the discussion open instead of ending it.

Reading: interaction or parallel monologues?

Read this original, fictional mini-dialogue. The practice data are fictional.

Context: A school has a fictional budget of €3,000 for a cross-cultural project. It must choose one main format.

A: I think the buddy programme is strongest because it creates repeated contact rather than a one-off event.

B: That makes sense, especially your point about repeated contact. But the oral-history exhibition could involve more people at once.

A: True. Could we combine the two by letting buddy pairs collect short stories for the exhibition?

B: I like that because it joins depth and reach. The risk is workload, though. How could we keep it manageable?

A: We could limit each pair to one three-minute audio story and use a common template.

B: Then I would support the combined option, provided participation stays voluntary.

Reading task: Underline the exact words that show listening, partner reference, joint development and compromise. Then rewrite one turn so that the interaction becomes weaker. Explain what was lost.

Context vocabulary before German help

Use this support ladder in order: context → word family → visual → English explanation → monolingual dictionary → bilingual dictionary / German help.

Word family English meaning in this course Short German help
interact → interaction → interactive act in response to another person aufeinander reagieren
respond → response → responsive answer in a way that fits what was said passend reagieren
invite → invitation open space for the partner to contribute eine Reaktion einladen
develop → development add depth, evidence or a new consequence weiterentwickeln
concede → concession accept part of the other position without giving up all of your own teilweise zustimmen
negotiate → negotiation work toward an acceptable shared decision aushandeln
synthesize → synthesis combine different points into a stronger whole zusammenführen

Analyse: What does the rubric reward?

Do not reduce quality to the number of phrases used. Analyse the function of each turn.

Evidence AFB II question AFB III extension
partner reference How exactly does the new turn connect to the previous one? Does the connection change or deepen the argument?
question What kind of response does the question invite? Does it help the pair solve the task?
disagreement Which reason or evidence supports the challenge? Does the speaker qualify, prioritise or reframe the issue?
compromise Which positions are combined? Is the compromise coherent, feasible and justified?

For LF level, aim for greater breadth, depth and text complexity, differentiated evidence-based analysis, independent linking of materials and more AFB II/III reasoning.

Speaking: the 10-minute tandem routine

Use this routine with any suitable, original task.

  1. Open the problem: briefly agree what must be decided.
  2. Exchange priorities: each partner names one criterion and gives a reason.
  3. Cross-reference: pick up the other criterion before adding a new one.
  4. Challenge: test one assumption with evidence, consequence or counterexample.
  5. Synthesize: combine compatible ideas.
  6. Decide: state a shared conclusion and one remaining reservation.

High-value phrases: Building on your point ... · If I understood you correctly ... · That changes the picture because ... · Would you say that ...? · Could we combine ...? · I can accept that provided ...

The BBC workplace scene is not an Abi task. Use it to compare blunt disagreement with disagreement that gives reasons and keeps the exchange productive.

Timed practice scenario

Fictional task: Your sixth-form course wants one project for a Cross-Cultural Encounters Week. Choose between a buddy programme, a live discussion forum, an oral-history exhibition and a multilingual welcome guide. Agree on one main project plus one supporting element.

LF stretch: Add two criteria, link at least two pieces of fictional evidence supplied by your teacher, test one counterargument and make the final decision conditional on one realistic constraint.

Writing

After a speaking round, write a 120–150 word interaction reflection, not an Ersatzaufsatz.

Explain which partner contribution changed your thinking, which phrase made that connection visible, where the dialogue became two parallel monologues, and how you would improve one turn. Use evidence from your own practice, not a generic model answer.

Mediation

Mediation can be useful as input when a German-language thesis or short source must be made accessible in English. Do not translate line by line. Select what the partner needs for the task, explain it clearly in English and integrate it into the discussion.

Mini-task: Your teacher gives you a short German notice about a fictional local intercultural event. Summarise the one fact that matters for your decision, then ask your partner how that fact affects the ranking of options.

Hilfen und Differenzierung

Level Language support Cognitive demand
Support phrase bank, visible interaction loop, 60-second planning pause one criterion, one reason, one partner reference
Standard keywords only compare criteria, challenge one idea, reach a justified decision
LF stretch no phrase bank after warm-up integrate materials independently, qualify claims, evaluate consequences, negotiate a nuanced shared outcome

You can also differentiate scope, tempo, text complexity, analysis depth and support. Reducing support should not mean reducing intellectual challenge.

Feedback

Use evidence-based peer feedback. The observer records short examples, not personality judgements.

Look for Evidence to note
balanced turn-taking Did both speakers create and release meaningful turns?
active listening Did a later turn use information from an earlier one?
partner reference Was the connection explicit and accurate?
inviting response Did questions open useful space rather than test the partner?
joint development Did the pair combine, qualify or negotiate ideas?

Feedback sentence: Your strongest interaction move was ... because ... . One next step is ... .

Fehleranalyse

Pattern Why it weakens the dialogue Repair
I agree. My next point is ... agreement is generic and the new idea is disconnected name the partner's exact point and show the consequence
five questions in a row the partner is interviewed rather than engaged answer, add and then invite
instant compromise the pair avoids analysis test criteria and counterarguments before deciding
prepared paragraph after every turn the exchange becomes two monologues shorten the prepared point and react first
constant interruption turn-taking becomes competitive use an entry phrase and release the floor deliberately

Transfer

Transfer the same interaction moves to a new topic that you have not rehearsed. Change the criteria halfway through: cost suddenly matters more, a stakeholder objects, or one option becomes unavailable. Your goal is to adapt together rather than defend a script.

A strong tandem does not merely produce two opinions; it produces a shared line of reasoning that neither speaker would have produced alone.

Datenschutz, Urheberrecht und KI

Use fictional personal data in practice tasks. Audio or video recording is voluntary and should remain private unless everyone explicitly agrees to another use. Do not upload classmates' work, voices or images without permission. Do not trigger external AI services or uploads on behalf of others.

Use AI, if allowed by your school, for limited support such as generating fictional prompts or checking whether a source exists. Do your own analysis and writing. Verify AI claims and sources. Do not submit replacement essays, invented citations or copied model answers. Do not reproduce complete required texts or unlicensed film sequences.

Abi-Check

Run one full simulation under the current 2027 framework.

  1. 15 minutes preparation: work individually; use only the permitted dictionaries if you want realistic conditions.
  2. About 5 minutes monologue each: the listening partner takes brief notes.
  3. About 10 minutes dialogue: connect both monologues, discuss the task independently and reach a justified outcome.
  4. At least 20 minutes total: allow both candidates enough speaking opportunity.
  5. Debrief: identify one example each of turn-taking, active listening, partner reference, inviting response and joint development.

Before your real exam, re-check your own exam year on the official Baden-Württemberg page linked above and follow your school's current organisational instructions.

Folgekurs

Continue with ABI LF - Monologisches Sprechen souverän gestalten and ABI LF - Materialgestützt analysieren und argumentieren. Reuse the same fictional prompt, first as a five-minute monologue and then as a tandem dialogue, so you can compare individual structure with real-time interaction.
