ABI LF - Personal oral-language improvement plan

English first: Use short, voluntary speaking samples to identify recurring patterns in fluency, clarity, range, accuracy, interaction and pronunciation. Turn evidence into two or three prioritised training goals, practise deliberately, record again and compare.

Mini-Beschreibung: Analysiere freiwillige Sprechaufnahmen hinsichtlich fluency, clarity, range, accuracy, interaction und pronunciation und entwickle priorisierte persönliche Trainingsziele; Zielgruppe: Leistungsfach.

Privacy first: Recordings stay voluntary and private. Use fictional names/data in shared examples. Do not upload classmates, private recordings or personal transcripts without explicit permission. Do not send recordings to external AI services. If AI is used for non-personal support, check claims and sources independently; do not submit AI-generated replacement essays or speeches as your own work.

Einleitung

This aiMOOC is designed for Englisch als fortgeführte Fremdsprache, Leistungsfach, Kursstufe Baden-Württemberg. The aim is not to imitate one “perfect” accent. The aim is to communicate clearly, flexibly, accurately and interactively at upper-secondary level.

For the Leistungsfach, you work with greater breadth, depth and text complexity, connect materials independently and focus strongly on AFB II and III: analyse, compare, evaluate, justify and transfer.

Official status check, 03 October 2026: For the 2027 Abitur, the current official sources are the Abitur 2027 information page, the Facherlass 2027 and the Beurteilungs- und Korrekturrichtlinien 2027. The relevant curriculum competence areas include listening/viewing, reading, speaking, writing, mediation, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation/intonation and text/media competence: Bildungsplan Englisch Leistungsfach.

Media starter

BBC Learning English – fluency prompt: Watch once without pausing. Then answer in English: Which two ideas could improve your own speaking this week? Do not copy a “native-speaker” model blindly; connect the advice to your own evidence.

Quick visual task: A waveform shows sound, not speaking quality. Explain why a personal language plan needs both observable evidence and interpretation.

I-can goals

By the end of this aiMOOC, you can say:

  1. I can analyse a short speaking sample using six training dimensions.
  2. I can distinguish evidence from impression: “I paused for four seconds before each example” is stronger than “I sound bad”.
  3. I can prioritise two or three goals instead of trying to fix everything at once.
  4. I can practise monologue and dialogue with purposeful repetition.
  5. I can use context, word formation, visuals, English explanations and a dictionary before German help.
  6. I can connect oral-language training to listening/viewing, reading, writing and mediation.
  7. I can transfer my strategies to unfamiliar Abi-style prompts.
  8. I can explain the difference between the written component and the Kommunikationsprüfung.

Prior knowledge and safe setup

Choose a topic you know well, for example school life, technology, migration, identity, culture or media. Record 60–90 seconds locally on your own device. The recording is optional. You may instead work with the fictional sample in this course.

Before recording, set one purpose: diagnosis, practice or comparison. Do not publish the file. If you work with a partner, agree in advance whether notes may be shared and when recordings are deleted.

Help ladder: English before German

Use support in this order:

  1. Context: infer meaning from the sentence and topic.
  2. Word formation: identify roots, prefixes, suffixes and word families.
  3. Visualisation: use a sketch, timeline, image or concept map.
  4. English explanation: paraphrase the unknown word in simple English.
  5. Monolingual dictionary: check meaning, collocation, stress and pronunciation.
  6. German help: use a German equivalent only if the previous steps are not enough.

Useful dictionaries: Cambridge Dictionary and Oxford Learner's Dictionaries.

Six-dimension training lens

Important: These six labels are a training lens, not the official Baden-Württemberg grading table. They map onto the official areas of task/content, strategy/interaction/discourse and linguistic performance.

Dimension Ask yourself Typical evidence
Fluency Can I keep the message moving without disruptive breakdowns? long pauses, fillers, restarts, chunking
Clarity Can a listener follow my main point and structure? signposting, focus, logical sequence, comprehensibility
Range Do I vary vocabulary, collocations and syntax appropriately? precise verbs, topic vocabulary, complex but controlled structures
Accuracy Are grammar, word choice and sentence patterns reliable enough? recurring tense, agreement, article, preposition or collocation errors
Interaction Do I listen, respond, develop ideas and negotiate meaning? follow-up, agreement/disagreement, clarification, turn-taking
Pronunciation Is my speech intelligible and appropriately stressed and intonated? sounds, word stress, sentence stress, rhythm, intonation

Analysis prompt: A visible waveform can help you locate pauses, but it cannot tell you whether an argument is precise, relevant or convincing. Add a language-based explanation.

Listening and viewing

Use this BBC Learning English lesson as an active listening task.

  1. First viewing: note three expressions that help a conversation move forward.
  2. Second viewing: identify one pronunciation feature and one discourse marker.
  3. Transfer: use two of the expressions in a 60-second response to a new question.
  4. Reflection: decide whether the expressions improve fluency, interaction, clarity or more than one dimension.

Reading

Read this original short text:

A useful speaking plan starts with evidence. Strong learners do not treat every hesitation as a failure. They ask whether a pause blocks meaning, whether vocabulary is precise enough for the task and whether their partner can enter the conversation. They then choose a small number of high-impact targets. Re-recording the same task after focused practice makes progress visible. The aim is not perfection but greater control under changing communicative conditions.

Reading task: Summarise the text in one sentence, then identify one claim you agree with and one claim you would qualify. Support both with reasoning.

Context vocabulary and word formation

Core word Word family English explanation Useful collocation
fluency fluent – fluently smooth, connected production without unnecessary breakdowns maintain fluency
clarity clear – clarify – clarification ease of understanding clarify a point
range range – wide-ranging variety of language resources lexical range
accuracy accurate – accurately reliable control of language forms and meaning grammatical accuracy
interaction interact – interactive building meaning together with others interaction strategy
pronunciation pronounce – pronunciation production of sounds, stress, rhythm and intonation pronunciation feature
cohesion cohesive – cohesively linguistic linking between ideas cohesive devices
repair repair – repair strategy fixing or reformulating speech when communication breaks down self-repair

Word-formation focus: Notice that pronounce → pronunciation changes spelling and sound. Build word families in context instead of memorising isolated translations.

Analyse your speaking sample

Use a short recording or the fictional extract below:

Well, I think social media is useful because… um… it gives people information. But there are also problems. For example, people can get… can get information which is not true. I agree with the idea that schools should teach media literacy, but I’m not sure how exactly.

Analyse in four passes:

  1. Meaning first: What is the speaker trying to say?
  2. Evidence: Mark a precise feature: pause, reformulation, vague word, successful signpost, tense pattern, stress issue or interaction move.
  3. Effect: Does the feature help or hinder meaning, precision or interaction?
  4. Action: Choose one realistic repair or practice technique.
Evidence Dimension Effect Possible training action
repeated “can get” Fluency / Range slight repetition, limited variation practise paraphrase chunks
“information which is not true” Range / Clarity understandable but imprecise retrieve “misinformation” in context
“For example” Clarity useful signpost retain and vary signposting
“I’m not sure how exactly” Interaction / Fluency honest stance but unfinished idea add a repair phrase: “What I mean is…”

Prioritise personal training goals

Do not train six dimensions at once. Use this rule:

Priority 1: frequent pattern + strong effect on intelligibility, task fulfilment or interaction. Priority 2: frequent pattern with moderate effect. Priority 3: occasional detail that can wait.

A strong goal is observable:

Over the next seven days, I will give three two-minute responses in which I use a clear opening, two signposts and one deliberate reformulation instead of stopping when I lose a word.

A weak goal is vague:

I will speak better English.

Use a maximum of three active goals at one time.

Speaking lab

This Cambridge C1 speaking test is not the Baden-Württemberg Abitur format. Use it only as an observation source for interaction, range, turn-taking and discourse management.

Monologue drill: Speak for 90 seconds on an unfamiliar visual or quotation. Use a three-part structure: claim → evidence/example → evaluation.

Dialogue drill: With a partner, discuss one issue for four minutes. Each person must build on the other speaker at least twice, challenge one idea politely and help reach a nuanced conclusion.

Useful interaction moves:

  1. Building: “That connects to your point about…”
  2. Qualifying: “I agree to an extent, but…”
  3. Clarifying: “Do you mean that…?”
  4. Repairing: “Let me put that differently.”
  5. Negotiating: “Could we agree that… while still recognising…?”

Pronunciation and intelligibility

Use IPA selectively. You do not need to transcribe whole speeches. Use it when a recurring sound contrast, word stress pattern or dictionary entry helps solve a real intelligibility problem.

Pronunciation priorities for advanced learners: word stress, sentence stress, thought groups, weak forms, rhythm, intonation and a small number of recurring sound contrasts. Aim for intelligibility and control, not accent erasure.

Micro-practice: Choose three words you genuinely need in an Abi topic. Check pronunciation in a monolingual dictionary, mark stress, say each word in a full sentence, then use all three in one 30-second response.

Writing to improve speaking

Writing is useful when it supports, rather than replaces, spontaneous speech.

Write a 120-word training log after one practice session:

  1. What worked?
  2. Which evidence shows a recurring problem?
  3. What is the next priority?
  4. Which technique will you test?
  5. How will you know whether it helped?

Then close the text and give a 60-second spoken version from keywords only. Do not memorise full scripts for spontaneous speaking practice.

Optional mediation

Read this fictional German notice:

Die Kommunikations-AG übt mit freiwilligen Kurzaufnahmen. Dateien bleiben auf dem eigenen Gerät und werden nicht veröffentlicht. Rückmeldungen konzentrieren sich auf Verständlichkeit, Struktur und Interaktion. Wer keine Aufnahme machen möchte, kann live oder mit einem fiktiven Beispiel arbeiten.

Task: Mediate the information orally for an English-speaking exchange student in about 45 seconds. Do not translate word for word. Select what the listener needs.

Feedback and error analysis

Use evidence-based feedback:

  1. Name one successful feature and quote or describe it precisely.
  2. Name one high-impact priority.
  3. Suggest one specific practice action.
  4. Re-record or repeat the task and compare.

Keep an error log by pattern, not by embarrassment. Group repeated issues such as articles, tense control, prepositions, collocations, sentence endings, word stress or turn-taking. If an error occurs once and does not affect communication, it may not deserve immediate priority.

Transfer

Transfer means using a strategy under changed conditions.

  1. Practise the same speaking structure with a new topic.
  2. Replace familiar vocabulary with material-specific terms from a new source.
  3. Move from monologue to dialogue without a full script.
  4. Respond to an unexpected counterargument.
  5. Summarise a visual, then evaluate its message.
  6. Link two materials and explain a tension or contradiction.

This is especially important in the Leistungsfach, where analysis and evaluation should be differentiated and evidence-based.

Abi-Check 2027: written component and Kommunikationsprüfung

Current official distinction:

Area 2027 English Leistungsfach What this course trains
Written component: listening about 30 minutes; unknown English audio; 20% of the total result of the written Abitur examination selective/detail listening, note discipline, vocabulary in context
Written component: writing 225 minutes including selection after a 15-minute break; reading, analysis and personal/creative writing; 55% material-based analysis, precise language, transfer
Kommunikationsprüfung oral part; 15 minutes preparation; monologue about 5 minutes per student plus dialogue about 10 minutes; individual examination at least 15 minutes, tandem at least 20 minutes; 25% fluency, clarity, range, accuracy, interaction, pronunciation

The official 2027 assessment of the Kommunikationsprüfung uses three broad areas: task fulfilment/content, strategy/interactivity/discourse competence and linguistic performance. Linguistic performance includes grammar/syntax, vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation/intonation and comprehensibility. Dictionaries are allowed in preparation; other aids are not.

Important distinction: The Kommunikationsprüfung is the oral component of the written Abitur examination in a modern foreign language. It is not identical to a separate additional oral Abitur examination in a subject already examined in writing.

For the 2027 English Leistungsfach, the official Schwerpunktthema is On the Move: Migration and Cross-Cultural Encounters; the two further fields concern politics, culture and society in the USA and the United Kingdom. The course therefore practises oral transfer with unfamiliar, legally usable prompts instead of reproducing complete mandatory texts or unauthorised film sequences.

The 2027 Facherlass also requires work across all three Anforderungsbereiche, with AFB II and III more strongly emphasised than AFB I in the Leistungsfach. Use the current IQB operator list for English from Abitur 2027.

Personal 3-week plan

Week Focus Evidence Output
1 Diagnose and prioritise one short private baseline sample two ranked goals
2 Deliberate practice three short targeted tasks feedback + error log
3 Transfer and Abi simulation unfamiliar prompt + dialogue comparison with baseline and next-step plan

Rule: Change a goal only when evidence shows that another issue has become more important.

Follow-up course

Continue with one focused pathway:

  1. Interaction and discourse strategies: build, challenge, negotiate and conclude.
  2. Pronunciation and intelligibility clinic: stress, rhythm, intonation and recurring sound contrasts.
  3. Communication exam simulations: timed monologue and dialogue with unfamiliar prompts.
  4. From material analysis to spoken evaluation: AFB II/III transfer across texts, visuals and data.

Offene Aufgaben

Leicht

  1. Private baseline recording: Make a voluntary 60-second local recording. Mark two successful features and one possible priority without uploading the file.
  2. Goal map: Visualise the six dimensions and highlight only the two that currently matter most for you.
  3. Word-family cards: Build eight English word families from the context vocabulary and use each in one meaningful sentence.
  4. Pronunciation check: Choose three topic words, check stress and pronunciation in a monolingual dictionary and use them in a short response.

Standard

  1. Evidence-based error log: Analyse three short speaking samples and group repeated patterns by dimension rather than by individual mistake.
  2. Interaction drill: Hold a four-minute partner discussion in which you build on two ideas, qualify one point and negotiate a conclusion.
  3. Media response: Watch one embedded learning video, extract two useful strategies and test them on a new topic.
  4. Writing-to-speaking transfer: Write a 120-word reflection, reduce it to five keywords and deliver a spontaneous 60-second oral version.

Schwer

  1. Unfamiliar prompt analysis: Analyse a new visual or short factual text and give a two-minute AFB-II/III response with evidence, interpretation and evaluation.
  2. C1 interaction observation: Use the Cambridge video as a non-Abitur comparison source. Identify three interaction strategies and judge which are transferable to the Baden-Württemberg Kommunikationsprüfung.
  3. Mediation challenge: Mediate a short German school-related notice into English for a specified audience, selecting rather than translating information.
  4. Abi simulation: Complete a timed monologue and dialogue with an unfamiliar prompt, then produce a justified three-goal training plan based on evidence.

Lernkontrolle

  1. Prioritisation under pressure: Given a fictional learner with many errors but only one week to practise, justify which two speaking patterns should be trained first and which can wait.
  2. Evidence versus impression: Compare “My pronunciation is terrible” with three concrete observations and explain why evidence produces a better training decision.
  3. Material transfer: Connect one statistic and one quotation to a spoken argument. Explain how your structure changes when the material becomes unfamiliar.
  4. Interaction repair: Design three ways to recover when you do not understand a partner, cannot retrieve a word or realise that your previous sentence was misleading.
  5. Written versus oral demands: Explain how preparation for the written component differs from preparation for the Kommunikationsprüfung and where the skills overlap.
  6. Plan revision: After a fictional second recording shows better fluency but weaker accuracy under pressure, revise the training plan and justify the new order of priorities.

Lernnachweis

For a strong Lernnachweis, show:

  1. Baseline evidence: a voluntary private sample or a fictional substitute.
  2. Six-dimension analysis: precise observations with examples.
  3. Prioritised goals: no more than three active targets.
  4. Practice design: targeted exercises linked to each goal.
  5. Feedback use: evidence of how feedback changed practice.
  6. Transfer task: response to unfamiliar material.
  7. Abi knowledge: correct distinction between written component and Kommunikationsprüfung.
  8. Reflection: a reasoned comparison of baseline and later performance without exaggerating progress.
  9. Source checking: independently checked official information and transparent handling of any AI assistance.
