ABI BF - Prüfungsgespräch flexibel führen

Mini-Beschreibung: React flexibly to follow-up questions in the oral exam, connect the source text with further course topics, and train spontaneous response plus clarification. Target group: Englisch Basisfach, Kursstufe Baden-Württemberg. English comes first; German is only a later support step.

Einleitung

The second half of an oral exam is not a memory test. You need to listen, react, explain, connect and clarify. In the 2027 Baden-Württemberg guidelines for modern foreign languages, the follow-up conversation is designed to deepen and problematise issues, connect them to broader subject contexts and show flexible thinking and appropriate reaction in the foreign language. For the Basisfach, the task remains more strongly focused on reproduction and reorganisation than on advanced transfer.

Important: This aiMOOC trains the skill. It does not replace your teacher’s course material, the current official regulations or your school’s exam arrangements. The oral Abitur in English is relevant only if English is chosen as the corresponding oral examination subject.

Media warm-up

Look at the image for 30 seconds. Then answer aloud: What makes a conversation flexible rather than scripted? Add one reason and one example.

Viewing task: Watch a short section and note two ways speakers make answers more developed. This Cambridge B2 video is used only for transferable speaking skills; it does not show the Baden-Württemberg Abitur format.

I-can goals

  1. Speaking: I can answer an unexpected follow-up question with a clear idea, reason and link.
  2. Interaction: I can ask for clarification without switching to German.
  3. Analysis: I can reconnect a question to evidence, purpose, tone or perspective in the source text.
  4. Transfer: I can connect the source text to another course topic without forcing a link.
  5. Language: I can paraphrase when one word is missing and keep speaking.
  6. Reflection: I can identify one communication problem in my own answer and repair it.

Prior knowledge quick check

Say a 45-second answer to: Why can a text about migration also raise questions about identity, belonging or social change? Do not prepare full sentences. Use only three keywords.

Then ask yourself: Did I answer the exact question? Did I give a reason? Did I connect to a course idea?

Official Abi check 2027

Checked for the 2027 Abitur in Baden-Württemberg, status 02 October 2026. The official 2027 Facherlass states for oral modern-language examinations that the exam task grows out of the qualification-phase course and uses a fictional or non-fictional authentic text at the required level, generally about 200–300 words. One to at most three tasks support an approximately 10-minute coherent presentation. The oral examination in a Basisfach is generally an individual examination of about 20 minutes, with about 20 minutes supervised preparation beforehand.

For the Basisfach, the emphasis is stronger on AFB I and II than on AFB III. The 2027 focus topic is On the Move: Migration and Cross-Cultural Encounters, together with the prescribed USA and UK topic fields. However, the works in the Pflichtkanon may not be the source of the presented oral Basisfach task. The conversation after the presentation should deepen, problematise and connect ideas; contents from different course semesters must be covered.

During supervised preparation, written notes are permitted. According to the 2027 guidance, a monolingual English dictionary and a bilingual English–German/German–English dictionary are permitted; further aids are not.

Listening and Viewing

Listening mission: Do not copy phrases. Listen for interaction moves: reacting to a previous point, asking back, developing an idea, disagreeing politely, keeping the conversation going.

After viewing, give a 30-second summary in English. Then add: One move I can transfer to an Abitur follow-up conversation is … because …

Clarification before German help

Use this support ladder in order:

  1. Context: infer meaning from the question and surrounding ideas.
  2. Word family: try a related form, for example clarify → clarification or respond → response.
  3. Visualise: picture the relationship, timeline, contrast or cause.
  4. English explanation: explain the word or idea in simpler English.
  5. Monolingual dictionary: check an English definition or example.
  6. Bilingual dictionary: use it only when the English route is not enough.
  7. German help: use a brief German cue only as the final support step in learning, not as your default speaking strategy.

Useful clarification moves: Could you clarify what you mean by …? / Do you mean … in relation to the text, or more generally? / Could you rephrase the question, please? / If I understand you correctly, you are asking whether …

Reading

For realistic preparation, use a teacher-provided new authentic text rather than a complete copyrighted Pflichttext. In the 2027 Basisfach oral exam, the presented task is not based on a work from the Pflichtkanon.

Read a 200–300-word authentic article extract, commentary, speech extract or literary passage chosen for your course. Mark only:

  1. the central idea;
  2. two pieces of evidence or detail;
  3. one perspective or tone signal;
  4. one possible link to a different course topic.

No replacement essay: Your notes should be keywords, not a memorised script.

Micro-reading drill

Use this fictional training headline only as a process drill: “A city library starts a multilingual story night for newly arrived families.” Ask:

  1. What issue could the article explore?
  2. Which stakeholder perspectives might differ?
  3. Which course themes could connect naturally?
  4. What evidence would you need before making a strong claim?

The real exam text is authentic; this fictional prompt only trains your response process.

Context vocabulary and word formation

Core word Word family Short English explanation Exam use
clarify clarification, clear make meaning easier to understand ask what a question means
respond response, responsive react to what has just been said answer flexibly
connect connection, connected show how two ideas relate link text and course theme
interpret interpretation, interpretative explain possible meaning analyse purpose or perspective
qualify qualification, qualified limit or refine a statement avoid overgeneralising
justify justification, justified give reasons or evidence support a claim

Mini-challenge: replace I don’t know with a thinking move: One way of looking at this is … / I would distinguish between … and … / The text suggests …, but it does not prove …

Analysis: from source text to follow-up

Use the R-E-L-A-T-E routine:

Step What you do Starter
R – Receive listen to the exact question The question focuses on …
E – Explain give a direct answer I would argue that …
L – Link connect to the source text This links back to the text because …
A – Add add another course context A useful comparison would be …
T – Test qualify or challenge your point However, this connection has limits because …
E – End close the answer cleanly So, the key point is …

A strong answer does not need many facts. It needs a relevant line of thought.

Speaking: flexible follow-up conversation

Transfer note: This B2 speaking video is not an Abitur model. Use it to observe how open questions are developed and how speakers react to each other.

Train three response lengths:

  1. 15 seconds – direct: answer + one reason.
  2. 30 seconds – developed: answer + reason + text link.
  3. 60 seconds – connected: answer + reason + text link + course connection + qualification.

Spontaneous response toolkit

When your mind goes blank, do not fill time with memorised language. Use a thinking frame:

  1. Define: “By … I mean …”
  2. Distinguish: “I would separate … from …”
  3. Compare: “Compared with …, this text …”
  4. Cause and effect: “One consequence could be …”
  5. Perspective: “From the author’s / character’s / audience’s perspective …”
  6. Evidence: “The strongest support in the text is …”
  7. Limit: “This is plausible, but the text does not show …”

Linking to further Unterrichtsthemen

For the 2027 context, practise flexible connections among Migration, Identität, Zugehörigkeit, USA, Vereinigtes Königreich, British Empire, Postkolonialismus, social change, cultural encounters and current issues. Connect only when the link is relevant to the examiner’s question.

Example pattern: The text presents belonging as a personal experience. A broader course connection is migration, because movement across borders can change language, identity and social relationships. However, the exact effect depends on the context.

Writing

Write a 90-word follow-up note after one speaking practice. Include:

  1. the examiner question;
  2. your one-sentence answer;
  3. one text reference;
  4. one course link;
  5. one sentence you would improve next time.

Do not write a full model speech. The goal is to sharpen the next spoken response.

Mediation option

If mediation supports your course work, take a short German note about a social or cultural issue and explain only the relevant idea in English for an international classmate. Do not translate sentence by sentence. Select, paraphrase and adapt.

Help, differentiation and pacing

Path Material and pace Support Expected output
Support one short text, one follow-up at a time starters, keyword map, 20-second thinking time clear 20–30 second answers
Core two linked themes, normal pace RELATE routine, dictionary as needed 30–60 second connected answers
Stretch rapid theme shift, counter-question, ambiguous wording no starter card nuanced answer with qualification and transfer

Basisfach principle: manageable materials, exemplary work and visible structure support secure understanding, analysis and communication.

Feedback and error analysis

After each practice, give feedback on only three points:

  1. Task fit: Did the answer address the actual question?
  2. Reasoning: Was there a reason, text link or relevant connection?
  3. Communication: Did the speaker stay understandable, flexible and interactive?

Error codes for self-correction: Q = question not answered, E = evidence missing, L = link forced or missing, C = clarification needed, R = repair successful.

Recordings are optional and private. Use fictional names and data in practice. Do not upload recordings, personal information, copyrighted exam materials or classmates’ work without explicit permission. This course requires no external AI access. If AI is used under school rules, disclose its use, verify claims and sources, and do not submit generated replacement essays or speeches.

Transfer drill: five examiner moves

Partner A asks one prompt. Partner B answers without preparation:

  1. Deepen: “Why is that point important for the text as a whole?”
  2. Challenge: “Could the opposite interpretation also work?”
  3. Connect: “How does this relate to another topic from the course?”
  4. Clarify: “What exactly do you mean by identity here?”
  5. Shift: “Let’s move from the individual perspective to society. What changes?”

Switch roles after five questions.

Abi check before you finish

Say yes only if you can do all of these:

  1. I can work from a new authentic source text rather than a memorised Pflichtkanon answer.
  2. I can speak for about ten minutes on the prepared task and then change mode into dialogue.
  3. I can ask for clarification in English.
  4. I can connect ideas across different course semesters.
  5. I can use a monolingual or bilingual dictionary strategically during preparation.
  6. I can answer first and then develop, rather than avoiding the question.
  7. I know that official conditions for my own examination year and school must be checked again shortly before the exam.
