ABI - I can write at Abitur level

Mini-description: Diagnose and improve your Abitur-level English writing: aspect-based summary, analysis, personal statement, target-text writing, cohesion, vocabulary, grammar and register. The course is designed for Basisfach (BF) and Leistungsfach (LF) English in the Baden-Württemberg Kursstufe. It works mainly in English at B2 level, with selected C1-oriented stretch tasks.

Target group: BF/LF, Englisch als fortgeführte Fremdsprache, Kursstufe Baden-Württemberg.

Current check: This aiMOOC is aligned with the official requirements for the 2027 Abitur available on 2 October 2026. For your own exam year, always re-check the current Facherlass, IQB operators and school instructions.

Safety and independence: Work with fictional practice data and your own writing. Recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless you actively decide otherwise. Do not upload classmates' work, personal data or recordings without permission. No task requires an external AI service. AI output may support reflection only after you have produced your own attempt; check claims and sources independently and do not submit replacement essays.

Media entry – 90-second challenge: Before reading advice, look at the image and write three verbs that describe what a strong writer actually does. Then watch the BBC clip below. Add one idea about register that your first list missed.

Active viewing: Pause after one example. Rewrite the same message for two audiences: a close friend and a school principal. Underline only the words or structures you changed. Explain in English why the changes fit the audience.

Einleitung

Strong Abitur writing is not “difficult English”. It is controlled English for a purpose. You need to understand the operator, select relevant content, organise ideas, use evidence, choose language that fits audience and text type, and revise your own draft.

For the 2027 English Abitur in Baden-Württemberg, the LF written exam includes listening and a writing section. In the writing section, the official structure includes an aspect-based summary, an analysis, and a choice involving a personal statement or a target-text writing task. Possible target text types named for 2027 include article, blog entry, email, letter, letter to the editor and speech manuscript.

In the 2027 LF writing section, content and language are weighted 40:60 overall. The official language assessment gives equal consideration to lexis, grammar and text design. Cohesive devices include connectors, lexical or structural reference, backward reference and paragraphing. Register must fit the situation and addressee.

For BF course assessment in 2027, the required range across the four course semesters includes listening, reading, analysis, mediation and two different writing tasks. BF and LF share core communicative competences, but they differ in complexity, breadth, depth and independence. The Bildungsplan target is B2, partly C1. This course therefore keeps the language natural: precision before decoration, clarity before artificial complexity.

I-can goals

I can ... BF focus LF stretch
summarise an unfamiliar text select the requested aspects and paraphrase them clearly reorganise dense material independently and keep the summary highly focused
analyse connect a relevant feature with its effect or function combine several features into a differentiated interpretation of purpose and audience effect
take a position develop a clear claim with reasons and relevant material reference weigh perspectives, qualify claims and build an independent line of argument
write for a target audience follow a clear model for article, email, letter or speech adapt structure, voice and register flexibly to a complex communicative situation
control language write coherent B2-level English with reliable core grammar use a broader range of lexis and syntax where it genuinely improves precision
revise find recurring problems with a checklist diagnose patterns, prioritise high-impact revisions and justify language choices

Media task: Find the verbs closest to remember, understand, analyse, evaluate, create. Match each to one writing move in this course. Do not treat the diagram as an official Abitur operator list; use the current IQB operator document for exam wording.

Vorwissen

Do this without AI and without a dictionary first. Mark each row secure / partly secure / not yet.

Check Your status
I can distinguish summary from analysis.
I can write one analytical paragraph with evidence and function.
I can state a position without repeating the source text.
I can change register for a different audience.
I can use paragraphing and reference words to make a text cohesive.
I can paraphrase instead of copying phrases from a source.
I can identify my three most frequent grammar problems.
I can use a monolingual dictionary entry efficiently.

Route: If summary and analysis are still mixed, start with Reading and Analysis. If content is secure but your writing feels repetitive, go to Context Vocabulary, Cohesion and Grammar. If BF, use the structured prompts first. If LF, reduce scaffolding after one successful model and connect two materials independently.

Help ladder: English before German

When you are stuck, move down this ladder only as far as necessary.

  1. Context first: reread the sentence before and after the unknown item.
  2. Word formation: identify root, prefix, suffix and part of speech.
  3. Visualise: sketch the relation, argument or sequence.
  4. English explanation: define the idea in simple English.
  5. Dictionary: use a monolingual learner's dictionary, then check collocation and example sentences.
  6. Bilingual help: use German only when the previous steps do not resolve the problem.

German emergency help: Eine deutsche Erklärung ist die letzte Stufe, nicht der erste Reflex. Ziel ist, Bedeutung aus Kontext, Wortbildung und englischer Erklärung zu erschließen.

Active viewing: Build one word family from each root: analyse, persuade, relevant, coherent, vary. Write one sentence per family that fits an Abitur-style task.

Listening and Viewing

Before viewing: Predict three problems students may have with academic writing.

First viewing – gist: Write one sentence that captures the main message.

Second viewing – detail: Note three strategies the speaker uses or mentions. Do not transcribe.

Transfer: Which strategy can improve an Abitur answer even though university writing and school exam writing are not identical? Give one reason.

BF support: Use the frame “One useful strategy is ... because ...”.

LF stretch: Add one limitation: “This advice is useful when ..., but less useful when ...”.

Reading: one fictional source, four writing tasks

Practice source – fictional material created for this course. The names and numbers are invented.

The Quiet Hour Experiment

Riverside Sixth Form has introduced a voluntary “quiet hour” in its library from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. During that time, students are asked to keep phones in their bags and use laptops only for schoolwork. The idea came from the student council after many learners said that short notifications repeatedly interrupted longer tasks.

The first four-week trial produced mixed reactions. In a fictional survey of 240 students, 62 percent said they completed more focused work during the quiet hour, while 21 percent reported no noticeable difference. Seventeen percent disliked the rule, mainly because they wanted to stay reachable for family or work. Library staff also noticed that some students simply moved to other spaces.

Supporters argue that the experiment creates a visible routine for sustained attention without banning devices across the school. Critics reply that self-management should be learned through choice, not by creating another rule. The student council now proposes an opt-out system and a second trial in which students can choose between a silent zone and a normal study zone.

Source note: Fictional MOOCwiki practice text; all data are invented for learning purposes.

Fictional survey result Share
More focused work 62 percent
No noticeable difference 21 percent
Disliked the rule 17 percent

Reading check: In one sentence, identify the proposal, the main support for it and the main criticism. Then compare your sentence with the text: did you add anything that is not there?

Context vocabulary

Word or phrase English meaning in this context Useful family or collocation
sustained attention attention maintained over a longer period sustain attention, sustained focus
voluntary chosen rather than compulsory volunteer, voluntarily
reachable able to be contacted remain reachable
self-management controlling your own time and behaviour manage oneself, self-managed
opt-out a choice not to take part opt out of a scheme
noticeable clear enough to be observed noticeably, notice
to propose to put forward an idea for consideration proposal, proposed
to interrupt to stop a process temporarily interruption, repeated interruptions

Vocabulary diagnosis: Replace vague words such as good, bad, thing, a lot, very important only when a more precise expression fits the meaning. Do not hunt for rare synonyms.

Summary

An Abitur summary is selective. The task tells you which aspects matter. Your job is to reorganise the relevant ideas and paraphrase them without adding analysis or personal judgement.

Diagnostic task S: Summarise the reasons for introducing the quiet hour and the reactions to it in about 80–100 words.

Check Yes / Not yet
I answer only the requested aspects.
I use my own wording and sentence structure.
I group ideas instead of following every sentence of the source.
I avoid quotations, examples and detail that are not needed.
I do not evaluate the proposal.

BF support: Plan two content blocks: reasons / reactions.

LF stretch: Reduce the summary by 15 percent without losing a required idea. Explain what you removed and why.

Analysis

Analysis answers how a text creates meaning or influence and why the chosen feature matters. Naming devices is not enough.

For literary texts, the 2027 requirements can refer to use of language and narrative techniques such as point of view, mode of presentation, characterisation, plot, time and setting. For non-literary texts, analysis can focus on structure, use of language and communicative strategies. Visual or discontinuous material can also matter.

Diagnostic task A: Analyse how the practice text presents the debate as balanced or contested. Write one paragraph of about 120–160 words.

Use this move:

  1. Claim: state the analytical point.
  2. Evidence: select a short feature or precise reference.
  3. Function: explain what the feature does in this context.
  4. Purpose: connect it to audience, intention or the text's presentation of the issue.

Do not write: “The author uses statistics. This makes the text interesting.”

Write more precisely: Explain which figures are selected, how opposing reactions are placed next to each other, and how this shapes the reader's view of the proposal.

BF support: Analyse two features.

LF stretch: Connect structure, statistics and the final compromise proposal in one coherent interpretation.

Personal statement

A personal statement is not a free diary entry. It should answer the exact question, develop reasons, use material when required and show a clear position that may be qualified.

Diagnostic task P: “Schools should create protected periods for focused work.” Comment on this statement, referring to the practice material where useful. Aim for 180–230 words.

Argument test: For each paragraph, write a five-word margin label. If two paragraphs receive the same label, check whether you are repeating the same reason.

Target-text writing

For the 2027 LF written Abitur, named target-text types include article, blog entry, email, letter, letter to the editor and speech manuscript. The communicative situation decides your register, structure and selection of information.

Diagnostic task T: You are a member of the fictional student council. Write an email to the head teacher proposing a second quiet-hour trial. Refer to the fictional survey, address one concern and request one concrete next step.

Target-text question Your decision
Who is the addressee?
What is my purpose?
What level of formality fits?
Which information is essential?
What action should the reader take?

Register transfer: Convert two sentences from your personal statement into sentences suitable for the formal email. Keep the meaning, change the relationship to the reader.

Cohesion

Cohesion is more than adding however and therefore. It also comes from reference, lexical chains, repeated sentence patterns when useful, and clear paragraphing.

Active viewing: Note four discourse markers. Classify each by function: adding, contrasting, returning, summarising or changing topic. Then decide which ones fit formal writing and which are mainly conversational.

Micro-edit: Join these ideas in three different ways: “The quiet hour is voluntary. Some students still feel restricted.” Use however, although and despite. Check the grammar after each linker.

Cohesion diagnosis: Highlight each paragraph's first and last sentence. Can a reader see how the new paragraph grows from the previous one? If not, revise the idea relation, not only the connector.

Vocabulary

The 2027 language criteria value both range and precision. Range does not mean inserting unusual words. It means having enough appropriate language to express distinctions clearly.

Three-level upgrade:

Vague More precise Context-sensitive
good effective effective in reducing interruptions
bad problematic problematic for students who must remain reachable
show indicate the survey figures indicate
say argue critics argue that
important significant a significant concern for accessibility

Self-test: Circle repeated content words in one paragraph. Replace only repetitions that weaken precision. Keep key terms when repeating them improves clarity.

Grammar

Media task: Choose three categories from the diagram that regularly cause errors in your writing. Create one correct example sentence for each.

Grammar principle: Complexity is useful only when it carries meaning. A clear relative clause, conditional or subordinate clause can show relationships more precisely; a long sentence with weak control does not become “C1” because it is long.

Diagnostic area Check Repair move
Sentence boundaries Do I have fragments or run-ons? separate or connect clauses deliberately
Verb forms Are tense, aspect and agreement controlled? identify time relation before editing form
Articles and nouns Are articles, countability and plural forms correct? check noun phrase by noun phrase
Prepositions and collocation Does the phrase sound natural? verify in a learner's dictionary
Complex syntax Does the clause relationship express my logic? simplify first, then rebuild

BF focus: Secure core structures and vary sentence openings.

LF stretch: Use syntactic variation to signal reasoning, concession and qualification, not to display complexity.

Register

Register is the fit between language, situation and audience. The official criteria explicitly connect appropriate language use with formality, register, situation and addressee.

Situation Usually appropriate Often inappropriate
Formal email to head teacher clear request, courteous wording, full forms, precise subject slang, unexplained abbreviations, exaggerated emotion
Blog entry for peers direct address, readable rhythm, accessible examples bureaucratic phrasing throughout
Speech manuscript audience signposting, rhetorical structure, memorable phrasing dense written syntax with no listener guidance
Analysis neutral analytical verbs, evidence, precise effects personal likes and dislikes

Register challenge: Rewrite “This rule is kind of annoying but also pretty useful” for analysis, for a student blog and for a formal email. Explain the differences in English.

Writing workshop: diagnose your profile

Complete tasks S, A, P and T before using digital feedback. Then select one paragraph from each.

Dimension Green Amber Red
Summary focused, paraphrased, relevant some extra detail or source-order dependence analysis, opinion or copying replaces summary
Analysis evidence is linked to function and purpose relevant feature but effect remains general device list or content retelling
Personal statement clear line of argument with reasons and qualification position clear but development uneven unsupported opinion or source summary
Target text audience, purpose and register shape the text some conventions fit, others are generic text could be sent to any audience unchanged
Cohesion paragraphs and references create a clear line connectors help but links are sometimes mechanical ideas are placed next to each other without relation
Vocabulary precise, varied and natural understandable but repetitive or occasionally vague frequent wrong word choice blocks precision
Grammar varied enough for meaning and generally controlled recurring errors but meaning remains clear errors often obscure relations
Register consistently appropriate occasional slips formality and audience relationship are mismatched

Profile rule: Pick only two priorities for the next draft: one content/text-type priority and one language priority.

Feedback without replacement writing

Peer feedback protocol:

  1. Read once for meaning. Do not edit yet.
  2. Name one passage that fulfils the task well.
  3. Ask one question where the reasoning is unclear.
  4. Mark one recurring language pattern, not every single error.
  5. Suggest one next action. Do not rewrite the paragraph for the writer.

AI boundary: If AI is permitted by your teacher for practice, use it after your own first attempt and ask for questions, error categories or alternative explanations. Do not ask for a full replacement essay. Verify every factual claim and every source independently. State AI use when your context requires disclosure.

Error analysis

Create an error log from your own work.

Category My recurring pattern Corrected example Why the correction works Next practice sentence
Lexis
Grammar
Text design / cohesion
Register
Task fulfilment

High-impact order: First fix meaning and task fulfilment. Then fix paragraph logic and cohesion. Then improve word choice and grammar. Finally polish register, spelling and punctuation.

Speaking

Strong writing improves when you can explain your reasoning aloud.

90-second oral rehearsal: Explain your answer to one of these questions: “Why is this summary focused?”, “How does this feature influence the reader?”, or “Why does this register fit the audience?”

BF support: Use three signposts: First – This matters because – Therefore.

LF stretch: Add a counter-reading or limitation and respond to it.

Privacy: You may record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private by default. No upload is required.

Mediation

Optional practice – fictional German source note: Die Stadtbibliothek plant einen Lernabend für Oberstufenschülerinnen und Oberstufenschüler. Es soll ruhige Arbeitsbereiche, einen Gruppenraum und eine kurze Einführung in Datenbanken geben. Eine Anmeldung ist nicht nötig. Die Bibliothek bittet Schulen um Rückmeldung, welche Uhrzeit besonders geeignet wäre.

Task: Your English-speaking exchange partner asks what the event offers and whether they need to register. Mediate the relevant information in a short English message. Do not translate sentence by sentence.

Check: Select for purpose, explain culture-specific information only if necessary, and write natural English for the recipient.

Exam-year note: For Abitur 2027, the LF written English examination structure and assessment criteria used above are based on the current Facherlass and Korrekturrichtlinien. Later cohorts must re-check current official documents. The revised IQB operator stock applies from the 2027 examination year.

Transfer

New scenario: A fictional school wants to replace one weekly homework task with a supervised study period. You receive a short staff statement, a student survey and a timetable graphic.

BF route: Summarise one material, analyse one argument and write a 180-word response using a planning grid.

LF route: Connect all three materials, evaluate competing priorities and produce a target text for a specified audience without a model paragraph.

Transfer question: Which of your writing skills remains stable across both tasks, and which must change because the audience or material changes?

Offene Aufgaben

Leicht

  1. One-sentence summary: Reduce the fictional quiet-hour text to one neutral sentence, then identify one detail you deliberately left out.
  2. Word-family map: Build word families for five course words and add one correct collocation for each.
  3. Register switch: Rewrite three informal sentences for a formal email and explain one change per sentence.
  4. Error log: Use an old paragraph of your own and categorise five recurring issues without rewriting the whole text for yourself.

Standard

  1. Analysis paragraph: Write one evidence-function-purpose paragraph on the fictional practice text and revise it after peer questions.
  2. Personal statement: Write 200 words on protected focus time, then cut ten percent while keeping the argument intact.
  3. Target-text pair: Express the same proposal once as a student blog post and once as an email to a head teacher; annotate register differences.
  4. Mediation: Mediate the fictional German library note for two different English-speaking recipients and compare what information you selected.

Schwer

  1. Material connection: Combine a fictional short text, a data table and a visual prompt into one LF-style line of reasoning without summarising them separately.
  2. Counterargument audit: Strengthen a position by formulating the strongest reasonable objection and answering it with a qualified claim.
  3. Timed writing: Complete summary, analysis and one writing task under a self-chosen realistic time limit, then revise with the diagnostic matrix.
  4. AI audit: If AI use is permitted, compare one AI feedback claim with a dictionary, the source text and an official criterion; document what you accept, reject or revise. Do not request a replacement essay.
