ABI - Counterarguments fair darstellen
ABI - Counterarguments fair darstellen
Mini description: Represent opposing positions accurately and develop a concession, qualification or rebuttal without straw-man argumentation. You practise this for written and spoken Argumentation in the English course stage in Baden-Württemberg.
Target group: Basisfach (BF) and Leistungsfach (LF), fortgeführte Fremdsprache, Kursstufe Baden-Württemberg. English comes first; German is used only as a rescue aid. Aim: B2, in parts C1 as a learning orientation.

Media starter: Look at the debate image. Before you argue, ask: Could the other side recognise its own position in my summary? If not, your counterargument is probably not fair yet.
Viewing focus: While watching Julia Dhar on productive disagreement, note how the speaker separates people from positions, looks for common ground and leaves room for uncertainty. Do not copy a transcript; collect methods in your own words.
Einleitung
A strong argument does not become strong by making the other side look weak. It becomes strong by answering the best relevant version of the opposing view. This course trains four moves:
| Move | English explanation | Micro-example |
|---|---|---|
| Counterargument | A relevant reason that challenges your claim. | A later school start may create transport problems. |
| Concession | You acknowledge a point that is genuinely valid. | Admittedly, transport is a real concern. |
| Qualification | You narrow your own claim by adding scope, degree or conditions. | The change should be introduced only if bus routes can be adjusted. |
| Rebuttal | You explain why the objection does not fully defeat your position. | However, this concern does not show that a limited pilot is unworkable. |
Deutsch-Hilfe erst danach: Gegenargument = sachliche Gegenposition; concession = berechtigten Punkt einräumen; qualification = eigene Aussage einschränken; rebuttal = Einwand begründet zurückweisen oder in seiner Reichweite begrenzen.
I-can-Ziele
- Argumentation: I can restate an opposing position accurately before I answer it.
- Concession: I can acknowledge a valid point without giving up my whole argument.
- Qualification: I can limit a claim with conditions, scope and degree.
- Rebuttal: I can answer an objection with evidence, reasoning and relevance.
- Strohmann-Argument: I can detect and repair distorted counterarguments.
- Abitur: I can use these moves in analysis, discussion, personal response and communication tasks.
Vorwissen aktivieren
Write one short answer in English to each prompt: What makes an argument fair? What is the difference between disagreement and disrespect? Which words do you already use for partial agreement? Then compare with a partner and revise one answer.
Quick diagnostic: Turn They are completely wrong into a sentence that keeps the disagreement but removes the attack on the person.
Das FAIR-Modell

| Step | What you do | Self-check |
|---|---|---|
| F – Frame | State the strongest relevant counterargument. | Have I kept the other side's conditions and limits? |
| A – Acknowledge | Concede what is valid. | Did I grant a real point rather than use fake politeness? |
| I – Inspect | Test evidence, assumptions, scope and inference. | What exactly does the evidence support? |
| R – Respond | Qualify your claim or rebut the objection. | What remains of my claim after the objection? |
Note: FAIR is a learning scaffold, not an official exam formula.
Viewing task: In the Leiden University clip, identify the sequence argument – counterargument – rebuttal. Afterwards, add a concession or qualification that would make the sequence more nuanced.
Word formation and context vocabulary
Use a monolingual dictionary first. Check meaning, collocation and register before using German help.
| Word family | Useful phrase | Dictionary | Deutsche Notfallhilfe |
|---|---|---|---|
| argue → argument → argumentative → arguably | argue that / an argument against | Cambridge | argumentieren / Argument |
| concede → concession → concessive | concede that / make a concession | Cambridge | einräumen / Zugeständnis |
| qualify → qualification → qualified | qualify a claim / with one qualification | Cambridge | einschränken / präzisieren |
| rebut → rebuttal | rebut an objection / offer a rebuttal | Cambridge | widerlegen / begründet entkräften |
| refute → refutation | refute a claim | Cambridge | widerlegen |
| represent → misrepresent → representation | represent a position fairly | Cambridge | korrekt darstellen / verzerren |
Useful language: admittedly, to some extent, provided that, under these conditions, this concern is valid insofar as …, this does not necessarily follow, the evidence is limited because …, nevertheless, on balance.
Reading: two fair positions
All data below are fictional and for practice only.
Text A – Student council: The council supports a one-term trial of a 9:00 school start. In a fictional survey of 500 students, 62% preferred the later start and 41% reported difficulty concentrating in the first lesson. The council argues that a trial could generate local evidence about punctuality and attendance before any permanent decision.
Text B – Transport committee: The committee opposes immediate full implementation. In the same fictional scenario, it estimates that changing bus routes would raise transport costs by 8% and could create conflicts with afternoon activities. It would support a limited trial only if transport and activity schedules were adjusted first.
Reading task: Summarise each position in one sentence. Then identify one point of overlap, one genuine conflict and one condition that could support a compromise.
Analyse: evidence, inference and scope

A counterargument can attack different parts of an argument. It may challenge the evidence, the inference from evidence to claim, the scope of the claim, or the priority given to one consideration.
| Question | Example with the fictional school-start case |
|---|---|
| Evidence? | Does the survey measure preference, concentration, attendance or all three? |
| Inference? | Does preferring a later start prove that it improves learning? |
| Scope? | Is the claim about all students, most students or a local pilot? |
| Priority? | How should learning aims be weighed against transport and activity constraints? |

Analysis task: Draw your own argument map with one claim, two supporting reasons, one fair objection and one response. Label the response as concession, qualification or rebuttal.
Straw man vermeiden
A straw man replaces the actual opposing position with an easier, distorted version. The problem is not disagreement; the problem is answering a claim that the other side did not make.
Fairness test: Could the other side say Yes, that is my view? Did you keep words such as some, often, only if or in this case? Are you answering the strongest relevant point rather than a weak side issue?

Watch for another trap: A false dichotomy reduces a complex issue to only two options. Qualification often helps: A pilot may be useful under certain conditions is more precise than Either we change everything or do nothing.
Concession, qualification and rebuttal in one paragraph
Prompt: Should the fictional school test a later start?
Model: Opponents reasonably point out that a later start could complicate transport and afternoon activities. Admittedly, these logistical concerns must be taken seriously. The proposal should therefore be limited to a one-term pilot with adjusted bus and activity schedules. However, the existence of logistical problems does not by itself show that a carefully planned pilot is unworkable.
Notice: The paragraph does not insult the opposing side, does not exaggerate its claim and does not pretend the objection is irrelevant.
Listening / Viewing
Before viewing: Predict three functions of a counterargument paragraph.
While viewing: Note how the video defines counterargument and rebuttal. Mark one point you would keep and one point you would make more nuanced.
After viewing: Write a 60-second spoken response beginning with a fair restatement of an opposing view. Recording is optional; if you record, keep the file private unless you explicitly choose to share it.
Speaking
Use this five-move exchange in pairs:
- Claim: Speaker A gives a claim and one reason.
- Paraphrase: Speaker B restates A's position fairly.
- Accuracy check: Speaker A confirms or corrects the paraphrase.
- Response: Speaker B adds a concession plus a qualification or rebuttal.
- Revision: Speaker A revises the claim in light of the objection.
BF: Use one counterargument and the FAIR scaffold.
LF: Connect two competing considerations, identify an assumption and negotiate a qualified conclusion. Aim for greater depth, not artificial vocabulary.
Writing
Use this compact paragraph frame:
| Function | Sentence starter |
|---|---|
| Fair counterargument | A strong objection is that … |
| Concession | Admittedly, … / This concern is valid insofar as … |
| Qualification | This claim applies mainly when … / provided that … |
| Rebuttal | However, this does not necessarily show that … because … |
| Return to thesis | On balance, the claim should therefore be revised to … |
BF practice: Work with one short text and one counterargument. Use the scaffold, then remove sentence starters you no longer need.
LF practice: Link evidence from more than one source, compare the strength of competing claims, make assumptions explicit and formulate a precise qualified judgement.
Mediation optional
Task in English: Mediate the German note for an English-speaking student committee. Preserve both concerns; do not translate sentence by sentence.
Die Schulleitung befürwortet einen Pilotversuch, sofern Buspläne und AG-Zeiten angepasst werden können. Der Elternbeirat warnt vor Betreuungsproblemen am Nachmittag. Beide Seiten verlangen belastbare Daten nach einem Halbjahr.
Goal: Produce a balanced English message that makes the conditions and disagreement clear.
Hilfen und Differenzierung
| Support level | Use this |
|---|---|
| Starter | FAIR model, sentence starters, one monolingual dictionary entry, one counterargument. |
| Core | Two short sources, own wording, explicit concession plus qualification or rebuttal. |
| LF extension | Source synthesis, competing assumptions, alternative interpretation, precise scope and independent revision. |
Language support order: context → word family → visualisation → English explanation → monolingual dictionary → only then German help.
Feedback
Use this checklist on a peer paragraph. Give one specific strength and one revision request.
| Check | Yes / revise |
|---|---|
| The opposing position is accurate and recognisable. | |
| A genuine point is conceded. | |
| The writer distinguishes evidence from inference. | |
| The claim is qualified where necessary. | |
| The rebuttal answers the actual objection. | |
| The conclusion matches the evidence and scope. | |
| Language is clear, cohesive and appropriate for the task. |
Fehleranalyse
Repair each sentence without changing the underlying disagreement.
- Straw man: They want a later start, so obviously they do not care about after-school activities. → Restore the actual condition or concern.
- Fake concession: Some people naively claim that transport matters. → Replace the judgemental framing with a genuine concession.
- Overclaim: The survey proves that a later start improves learning for everyone. → Match the claim to what the fictional data actually measure.
- Irrelevance: Transport costs do not matter because students like sleeping. → Answer the transport objection itself.
Transfer

Apply the method to a new, non-sensitive school issue such as library opening times, homework formats or a device-free study room. Create a small argument map before you write. Use fictional data if you need numbers and label them clearly as fictional.
Abi-Check Baden-Württemberg
Checked for the 2027 Abitur cohort; status: 2 October 2026. The 2027 Facherlass for English explicitly refers to the Bildungsplan 2016 for this cohort. The newer curriculum versions introduced for younger year groups do not replace that reference for the 2027 Abitur cohort.
Shared BF/LF orientation: Both courses develop English toward B2, in parts C1. BF and LF differ in complexity and abstraction of texts and topics as well as breadth, depth and differentiation of task work.
LF 2027: The central written examination combines listening and writing. The writing section includes reading, analysis and a choice between a personal response and a creative writing task. Course assessments address all three Anforderungsbereiche, with II and III more strongly weighted than I.
BF 2027: Across the four course semesters, assessment must cover listening, reading, analysis, mediation and two different writing-task types. All three Anforderungsbereiche are addressed, with I and II more strongly weighted than III. The Facherlass provides an oral examination section for BF rather than a central written BF examination section.
Operators from 2027: The revised IQB operator set applies from the 2027 examination year. For example, assess/evaluate requires a well-founded judgement supported by evidence and examples. In speaking, argue requires a case for and/or against a position based on appropriate evidence.

For another examination year: Check the Facherlass and the IQB operator version again before using the Abi-specific notes.
