You read an English sentence. One word is new. What can you do?

Try English first: Read the whole sentence. Can you guess the word?

Hint: Look at the words around it.

Solution: Here, bat is a sports object. It is not an animal.

A good online dictionary can help you with:

1. meaning: What does the word mean?
2. pronunciation: How does the word sound?
3. context: Which meaning fits this sentence?
4. word class: Is it a noun, verb or adjective?
5. example sentence: How is the word used?

Important: A dictionary can give you choices. You choose the meaning that fits the context.

Look at the two pictures.

The English word bat can have different meanings.

Sentence A: “A bat flies in the night.”

Sentence B: “Mia hits the ball with a bat.”

Try English first: Which picture fits sentence A? Which picture fits sentence B?

Hint: Look at flies and hits the ball.

Listen: Same word, same sound

Listen once. Then listen again.

Say: bat

The two meanings of bat sound the same. The context tells you the meaning.

Pronunciation goal: Be clear. You do not need a perfect accent.

Use this short routine:

1. LOOK – Read the whole sentence.
2. SEARCH – Type the word into a suitable dictionary.
3. LISTEN – Use the speaker button.
4. CHOOSE – Check which meaning and example fit.
5. USE – Make one short sentence of your own.

For school work, use a dictionary your teacher accepts.

The word match can also have more than one meaning.

Sentence A: “We watched a football match.”

Sentence B: “Dad lit a match.”

Imagine you search for match and see two short meanings:

Pronunciation: Listen before you guess

A spelling does not always show you the full sound of an English word. Use the audio button when it is available.

You do not need to copy every small sound difference.

Use a dictionary entry wisely

A useful dictionary entry may show:

1. the word
2. the word class
3. one or more meanings
4. a speaker button
5. example sentences

Do not try to learn every detail at once.

For Class 6, ask these three questions:

1. What does it mean here?

2. How does it sound?

3. Can I use it in my own short sentence?

Word class: a small clue

You may see short labels:

Label	Meaning	German help
noun	a person, place, thing or idea	Nomen
verb	an action or state	Verb
adjective	describes a noun	Adjektiv

Example: In “a bat flies”, bat is a noun.

You do not need to analyse every word. Use the label when it helps you choose the correct meaning.

Reading: A dictionary helps, but do not stop at every word

Read the short text.

Leo and Sam are at a sports club. Sam sees the word “coach” on a notice. He checks the sentence: “Ask your coach before the game.” The dictionary shows more than one meaning. Sam reads the examples. He chooses “sports trainer”. Then he listens to the word and says it quietly.

Question 1: Why does Sam read the whole sentence?

Question 2: Why does he read examples?

Question 3: What does he do after he finds the meaning?

Try English first: Answer with short phrases.

Solution: He uses the context, checks examples, then listens to the pronunciation.

Listening and speaking

Work with one partner. One person reads the short dialogue at a moderate speed. Then change roles.

A: What does “coach” mean here: “Our coach helps us practise after school”?

B: I can see two meanings. Here it means a sports trainer.

A: How do you know?

B: The words “helps us practise” are my clue.

Say the dialogue twice.

Round 1: Read slowly.

Round 2: Look up more often and speak naturally.

Optional private recording: You may record your own voice only if your teacher allows it. Keep the recording private. No upload is needed.

Speaking frame

Use this frame with a new word:

I looked up “_____”.

It can mean “_____”.

In my sentence, it means “_____” because “_____”.

I listened to the pronunciation and tried it twice.

Short writing

Write a mini message of 3–4 sentences.

Try English first: Write 3–4 short sentences.

Your German-speaking friend asks:

Do not translate every word automatically.

Give short help:

English clue: team + Saturday activity.

German help: In diesem Kontext bedeutet match ein Spiel bzw. einen Wettkampf.

Then say one short English example of your own.

Smart digital habits

1. Use school-approved websites and follow your school rules.
2. Do not type private names, addresses, passwords or personal messages into a search box.
3. Use fictional data in practice tasks.
4. No account, upload or public recording is needed for this course.
5. A translation tool can suggest words, but you still check the context.
6. No AI tool is needed. If your class already uses an approved AI tool, check important word choices in a dictionary and write your own final sentence.

After using a dictionary, ask:

1. Meaning check: Does this meaning fit my sentence?
2. Sound check: Did I listen and repeat?
3. Use check: Can I make a short sentence myself?

Word: light

Sentence A: “Please turn on the light.”

Sentence B: “This bag is very light.”

Try English first: Is light the same kind of meaning in both sentences?

Hint: In A, you can turn it on. In B, it describes a bag.

Example: One English word can match different German words.
