E5 E - Mediation is not translation
E5 E - Mediation is not translation
Mini-Beschreibung: Erkenne den Unterschied zwischen sinngemäßer Mediation und einer Wort-für-Wort-Übertragung. Entscheide: What does the other person really need to know?
Zielgruppe: Klasse 5, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg, E-Niveau.

Start: Look, listen, think
Look. Two people do not understand each other. You can help.

Listen and repeat:
Excuse me.
Please.
Think: Du musst nicht jedes Wort übertragen. Du hilfst einer Person, die wichtige Information zu verstehen.
Your learning loop
See → listen → understand → repeat → use → feedback → use again.

Du arbeitest immer in kleinen Schritten. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als ein perfekter Akzent.
Learning goals
Am Ende kannst Du:
- mediate: wichtige Informationen sinngemäß zwischen Deutsch und Englisch weitergeben.
- choose key information: entscheiden, was die andere Person wirklich braucht.
- use polite chunks: einfache Wendungen wie Excuse me, please, You need... und It is... passend verwenden.
New words and chunks
| English | Hilfe |
|---|---|
| to mediate | Informationen für jemanden passend weitergeben |
| key information | wichtige Information |
| need | brauchen |
| meaning | Sinn / Bedeutung |
| Excuse me. | höflich Aufmerksamkeit bekommen |
| You need ... | Du brauchst ... |
| It is at ... | Es ist um / bei ... |
| It is next to ... | Es ist neben ... |
| Sorry, I don't know the word, but ... | Strategie, wenn Dir ein Wort fehlt |
Vorwissen-Check
Quick check. No dictionary first.
Situation: Ben sagt auf Deutsch: „Der Bus fährt um vier Uhr am Bahnhof ab.“ Mia versteht nur Englisch.
Was braucht Mia wahrscheinlich?
- Abfahrtszeit und Ort.
- Nicht Bens Lieblingsfarbe.
- Nicht jedes einzelne deutsche Wort.
Feedback: Wenn Du time + place gewählt hast, denkst Du schon wie ein mediator.
Input: Mediation is not a word-for-word task

Bei der schulischen Mediation gibst Du Informationen sinngemäß, passend zur Situation und zur Person weiter. Du wählst Wichtiges aus.
Eine normale Übersetzung soll einen Ausgangstext möglichst vollständig und angemessen in eine andere Sprache übertragen. Auch eine gute Übersetzung ist nicht einfach Wort für Wort. In diesem Kurs geht es aber um etwas anderes: Du vermittelst gezielt das, was Dein Gesprächspartner gerade braucht.
Simple rule: Do not translate every word. Pass on the useful meaning.
Example 1: At the station
German information: „Der Bus nach Oxford fährt um 16 Uhr von Haltestelle 3. Heute ist es windig. Der Fahrer heißt Tom.“
Your English-speaking friend asks: When and where is the bus?
Good mediation: The bus is at four o'clock. It leaves from stop three.
Not needed now: weather and the driver's name.
Feedback: Good mediation is short because it follows the listener's need.

Example 2: At a café
Your German-speaking friend asks what they can order. The menu is in English.

Your friend says: „Ich möchte nur wissen, ob es etwas ohne Kaffee gibt.“
You do not need to explain every item.
You can say in German: Es gibt auch Getränke ohne Kaffee. Schau hier bei den anderen Getränken.
Then, if needed, ask in English:
Excuse me. Do you have a drink without coffee, please?
Watch and listen: useful English in real situations
First time: Watch and listen. Do not stop at every word.
Second time: Listen for useful chunks.
Third time: Pause and repeat one short sentence.
Task: Which information is important when somebody asks for directions? Think: place + way + useful landmark.
Speak: directions
Mini-dialogue
Leo: Excuse me. Where is the station?
Nina: My German friend says: „Der Bahnhof ist neben dem Supermarkt.“
You: The station is next to the supermarket.
Leo: Thank you!
You: You're welcome.
Now repeat. Speak slowly and clearly. Then say the same message again without reading.
Watch: shopping language
Listen for short useful chunks such as asking for a size or colour.
Mediation challenge: Your friend does not need every sentence from the shop assistant. Give only the information that answers the friend's question.
A simple strategy: NEED
N – Need: What does the person need?
E – Extract: Find the key information.
E – Express: Say it simply in the other language.
D – Do a check: Did the person understand?
Useful check: Is that clear? / Do you need more information?
When you do not know a word
Do not stop. Use a simple strategy.
Sorry, I don't know the word, but ...
Then you can:
- describe it: It is a place for buses.
- use an easier word: shop instead of a difficult shop type.
- point to a picture, map or sign when this is allowed.

Grammar in communication
You only need small grammar tools here.
| Job | Useful pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| say where | It is + place | It is next to the café. |
| say when | It is at + time | It is at four o'clock. |
| say what somebody needs | You need + noun | You need a ticket. |
| ask politely | Can I have ... please? | Can I have a ticket, please? |
The grammar helps the message. The message is the goal.
Mini listening loop
Listen again:
- Hear it.
- Repeat it.
- Use it: Excuse me. Where is the station?
- Ask a partner to say: clear or try again.
- Say it one more time.
Direct feedback: If the message is understandable and polite, it works. Improve one small thing, then try again.
Mini-repeat: translation or mediation?
Situation A: A teacher asks you to translate a short notice completely. → This is a translation task.
Situation B: Your friend asks only when the sports club starts. You find the time in a German notice and tell it in English. → This is mediation.
Remember: Mediation follows the situation and the listener's need.

Offene Aufgaben
Leicht
- Key information: Markiere in drei kurzen Mitteilungen nur die Information, die eine bestimmte Person wirklich braucht.
- Mini-Mediation: Lies „Treffen um 15 Uhr vor der Schule.“ und sage die wichtige Information auf Englisch.
- Chunks: Sprich drei höfliche Chunks nach: Excuse me., Can you help me, please?, Thank you.
- Mini-Präsentation: Erkläre in etwa einer Minute auf einfachem Englisch: Mediation is not a word-for-word task. Nutze ein eigenes Beispiel und beantworte danach eine Rückfrage.

Lernkontrolle
- Situation Bahnhof: Ein deutschsprachiger Freund braucht nur Abfahrtszeit und Gleis aus einer englischen Anzeige. Entscheide, welche Angaben Du auswählst, und vermittle sie auf Deutsch. Begründe Deine Auswahl.
- Situation Schule: Eine englischsprachige Gastschülerin fragt, was sie morgen mitbringen soll. Formuliere aus einer längeren deutschen Klassen-Nachricht eine kurze passende englische Antwort.
- Missverständnis lösen: In einem Dialog versteht eine Person das Wort canteen nicht. Nutze eine Kompensationsstrategie, ohne ein Wörterbuch zu verwenden.
- Adressat wechseln: Vermittlere dieselbe kurze Information einmal für ein Kind und einmal für eine Lehrkraft. Erkläre, was Du sprachlich veränderst.
- Feedback nutzen: Eine Partnerperson sagt: „I understand the time, but not the place.“ Verbessere Deine Vermittlung gezielt und erkläre, warum die zweite Version hilfreicher ist.
- Transfer: Entwickle selbst eine zweisprachige Alltagssituation, in der weniger Information besser ist als eine vollständige Übertragung. Führe sie mit einer Partnerperson durch.
