Einleitung

E9 M - Create an English CV

In this aiMOOC you learn how a simple English CV is organised and which English words you need. You then create a fully fictional practice CV. The level is B1-oriented for English as a first foreign language in Klasse 9, M-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Mini goal: Understand the structure and key English terms of a simple CV and create a complete fictional practice profile.

Look first. What can you recognise in the CV image? Say three section names or ideas in English.

Deutsch-Hilfe öffnen

Ein CV ist ein Lebenslauf. In diesem Kurs arbeitest Du zuerst mit englischen Beispielen. Die deutsche Hilfe ist nur eine Stütze und keine Vollübersetzung.

I-can-Ziele

At the end, I can ...

  1. identify common CV sections such as profile, education, experience and skills.
  2. understand key words in a simple B1-level CV.
  3. find relevant information in a short job advert.
  4. talk about a fictional applicant and ask follow-up questions.
  5. write a clear fictional CV with short, relevant information.
  6. check language, relevance, privacy and sources before I use feedback.

Vorwissen

Quick start

Read these words: school – skills – experience – languages – interests.

Choose two and make one short sentence, for example: My strongest skill is ... or I have experience in ...

Then ask a partner one question: What skills are useful for a weekend job?

Media start: What does a CV look like?

A CV gives a short, clear summary of relevant education, experience and skills. The exact format can vary by country, employer and job. For this school task, use only invented data.

Privacy rule: Do not use your real home address, private phone number, date of birth, private social-media account or another person's data. Do not upload a real CV to an external service for this task.

Input

What is a CV?

In British English, CV means curriculum vitae. In North American English, résumé is common. A CV is used to show information that is relevant to an application.

For a simple school-level practice CV, these sections are useful:

  1. Profile: a short introduction.
  2. Education: your school or training.
  3. Experience: work experience, volunteering or projects.
  4. Skills and interests: abilities and relevant activities.
  5. Languages: languages and realistic levels.
  6. References: only when required; for practice, no real contact data.

Read a fictional practice CV

Everything below is invented. Do not copy it as real personal data.

Section Fictional example
Name Mia Northfield
Contact student.cv@example.com
Profile I am a reliable Year 9 student who enjoys working with people. I am looking for a short work-experience placement in a local bookshop. I learn quickly and work well in a team.
Education 2023–present: Northbridge Community School
Experience 2025: Helped at a fictional school reading event; welcomed visitors and organised books.
Skills Teamwork, basic presentation skills, careful organisation
Languages German: first language; English: B1-oriented school level
Interests Reading, volleyball, school media club
References Available on request

Reading check: Which part shows what Mia can do? Which part shows what she has done? Which information is deliberately missing for privacy?

A simple CV structure

A clear CV is easy to scan. Use short headings, consistent dates and relevant information. If you have little work experience, school projects, volunteering and responsibilities can be useful when they match the task.

Useful order for this course: Profile → Education → Experience → Skills → Languages → Interests → References.

Listening and Viewing

Viewing 1: How to write a CV

First viewing: Watch a short part without stopping. Listen for profile, employment, education, skills.

Second viewing: Use subtitles if needed. Write down two useful English phrases. Do not copy a complete model.

Respond: Which section seems easiest for a Year 9 student? Give one reason in English.

Hint

Try: I think ... is easiest because ...

Viewing 2: CV claims and an interview

This British Council scene has several speakers in a job interview. Listen for information that comes from a CV.

Viewing task: Find one claim about a skill or interest. Then decide: Is the claim supported by the speaker's answer?

Key idea: A CV should be clear and truthful. Never invent a real qualification or language level in a real application.

Optional short recap video

Use this video as a recap. Pause after a section and say the heading before it appears.

Media safety: Watching external videos is optional. Do not post private information in comments and do not create an account just for this course.

Kontextwortschatz

Word Meaning in the CV context Example
profile short introduction My profile explains what I can offer.
education school or training Education shows where I study.
experience things you have done I have experience from a school project.
skill something you can do well Teamwork is a useful skill.
reliable someone others can depend on I am reliable and punctual.
responsibility a task you are expected to do My responsibility was to welcome visitors.
achievement something you completed successfully Organising the event was an achievement.
relevant useful for this job or task Choose relevant experience.
reference a person who can confirm information References are available on request.
apply ask formally for a job or placement I want to apply for a work-experience placement.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Schlüsselwörter

profile = Kurzprofil; education = Bildung/Schule; experience = Erfahrung; skill = Fähigkeit; reliable = zuverlässig; responsibility = Aufgabe/Verantwortung; relevant = passend für die Stelle.

Aussprache und Fluency

Say these words slowly, then in a short phrase:

  1. experience → relevant experience
  2. education → my education
  3. reliable → a reliable student
  4. responsibility → my main responsibility

Now speak in chunks, not word by word:

I am a reliable student / with experience from school projects / and I enjoy working in a team.

Goal: Be easy to understand. You do not need to sound like a native speaker.

Speaking

Pair task: Which detail fits the job?

Fictional job advert:

Weekend helper – Northbridge Books

We are looking for a friendly student who can help customers, organise shelves and work in a small team on Saturday mornings. Good English is useful.

Student A reads the advert. Student B reads Mia's fictional CV.

Talk for about two minutes:

  1. Which two CV details are most relevant?
  2. Which detail needs more evidence?
  3. Ask one spontaneous follow-up question.
  4. Agree on one improvement.

Useful phrases: I think this is relevant because ... / Can you give an example? / I agree, but ... / We could improve this by ...

Writing

English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again

1. Understand: Read the fictional job advert and underline three key requirements.

2. Respond: Draft a fictional CV with six sections.

3. Ask: Ask a partner one focused question, for example: Is my profile clear?

4. Hint: Use the help ladder below only if needed.

5. Improve: Change at least two parts after feedback.

6. Use again: Adapt the CV to a second fictional job.

Product target: one short profile of about 3–4 sentences plus 8–12 concise CV entries or bullet points.

Do not replace your first draft. Keep it so you can see what you improved.

Mediation

From German information to an English CV

Do not translate every word. Select the useful information and write short English CV entries.

Fiktive Ausgangsinformation: „Lina hilft seit einem Jahr einmal pro Woche in der Schulbibliothek. Sie sortiert Bücher, erklärt jüngeren Schülerinnen und Schülern die Ausleihe und arbeitet gern im Team. In den Ferien nahm sie an einem zweitägigen Erste-Hilfe-Kurs teil.“

Create:

  1. one Experience entry,
  2. two Skills,
  3. one short sentence for a Profile.

Then explain in German which information you selected and why.

Functional grammar

Present or past?

Use the present simple for things that are true now:

I am reliable. / I work well in a team. / I attend Northbridge Community School.

Use the past simple for completed activities:

I helped at a school event. / I organised books. / I completed a first-aid course.

For current activities, you can also use a time phrase:

2025–present: Volunteer helper in a fictional school library.

Strong action verbs

Choose a clear verb instead of a long explanation:

helped – organised – created – supported – presented – planned – welcomed – completed

Example: Helped visitors at a school event is clearer than I was there and I did different things for visitors.

Hilfestufen

Help ladder

Hint 1 – words: reliable, friendly, organised, teamwork, project, helped, completed.

Hint 2 – sentence frames: I am a ... student who ... I have experience in ... My main responsibility was ... I would like to ...

Hint 3 – model profile: I am a reliable Year 9 student who enjoys practical tasks. I have experience from school projects and I work well with others. I am looking for a short work-experience placement where I can learn new skills.

Deutsch-Hilfe

Nutze zuerst Hint 1. Öffne Hint 2 oder 3 nur, wenn Du nicht weiterkommst. Schreibe danach wieder selbstständig weiter.

Feedback und Fehleranalyse

Check Possible problem Better choice
Relevance Too many hobbies with no link to the task Keep the most useful details
Evidence “I am excellent at teamwork” with no example Add a short example
Tense “I organise the event last year” “I organised the event last year”
Word choice “I made a Praktikum” “I completed a work-experience placement”
False friend “My actual school” “My current school”
Privacy Real phone number or private social-media account Use fictional practice data only

Feedback rule: Say one thing that is clear, ask one question and suggest one specific improvement.

Datenschutz, KI und Quellen

For this course, your profile and application data must be fictional.

If an AI tool is allowed by your school, use it only with fictional text. Do not enter real names, addresses, phone numbers, private messages or real application documents. Check AI facts, language suggestions and sources yourself. Keep your own draft and decide which feedback you accept.

No recording is required. If you practise speaking with audio, recording is voluntary and should stay private unless you have clearly agreed otherwise. Do not upload recordings without permission.

Transfer

Tailor the CV

A CV should not be the same for every task. Compare these two fictional jobs:

A: Bookshop helper – customers, shelves, teamwork.

B: Sports-event helper – visitors, outdoor tasks, punctuality.

Choose three CV details for A and three for B. Explain one change:

For the bookshop job, I would include ... because ...

Can-do-Check

Mark each statement for yourself: not yet – with help – independently.

  1. I can name at least five CV sections.
  2. I can understand the main idea of a simple B1-level CV.
  3. I can select relevant information from a job advert.
  4. I can describe fictional experience with clear action verbs.
  5. I can use present and past forms appropriately.
  6. I can give and use short feedback.
  7. I can protect personal data in a practice application.
