I can ...

After this course, you can ...

  1. understand key information about travel options.
  2. compare time, cost, distance, convenience and environmental aspects.
  3. ask for missing information.
  4. discuss and negotiate a travel choice.
  5. write a short, coherent recommendation.
  6. mediate important information between German and English.
  7. check and improve your own language.

Learning routine: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.

Before you start

Quick check: Complete the sentences orally.

  1. A train is usually ... than a bike for a long journey.
  2. A coach can be ... than a flight.
  3. I prefer ... because ...
  4. For me, the most important factor is ...

Useful question: What matters most to you: time, money, comfort or the environment?

Media warm-up

30-second challenge: Say three advantages and one disadvantage of cycling.

Think-pair-share: When can a coach be a good travel option?

Prediction: Which parts of a flight take time before and after the flight itself?

Listening and viewing

Watch for meaning, not every word. BBC Learning English uses natural English and several speakers in its 6 Minute English format.

Viewing task:

  1. First viewing: What is the main topic?
  2. Second viewing: Note three transport words and one opinion.
  3. Pair response: Would this idea make travel faster, cheaper or more convenient? Why?

Need a travel vocabulary refresh?

Active use: Choose five useful words from the video. Use two of them in your own travel recommendation.

Reading: Four fictional travel options

Scenario: Sam is 15 and is planning a fictional school-exchange journey from Greenford to Baychester. All route, price and time data below are invented for language learning. Sam has a budget of €100 and wants to arrive before 18:00.

Option Total time Cost Route distance Convenience Environmental aspect
Train 7 h 20 min €79 650 km one change, space to move very low in this fictional comparison
Coach 11 h 30 min €42 680 km direct, limited space low in this fictional comparison
Car-share 8 h 10 min €55 per person 700 km flexible, door-to-door medium in this fictional comparison
Flight 4 h door-to-door €95 600 km fast, airport checks and transfers high in this fictional comparison

Important: Real environmental impacts depend on factors such as vehicle type, occupancy, energy mix, route and calculation method. Published comparison data can differ between countries. A useful checked source is Our World in Data, based on UK government conversion factors for 2022.[1]

Reading tasks

  1. Find the cheapest option.
  2. Find the fastest door-to-door option.
  3. Find the shortest route.
  4. Which option is most flexible?
  5. Which two options have the lowest environmental labels in this fictional table?
  6. Which option would you choose for Sam? Give two reasons.

  1. more convenient than
  2. cheaper than
  3. faster than
  4. better for our budget
  5. on the other hand
  6. I would recommend ... because ...

Comparatives:

  1. The coach is cheaper than the train.
  2. The flight is faster than the coach.
  3. The car-share is more flexible than the train.

Balance ideas:

  1. The flight is faster, but it is more expensive.
  2. Although the coach is cheap, the journey is long.
  3. I recommend the train because it balances time and environmental aspects.

Make a suggestion:

  1. We could take the coach.
  2. We should compare the total travel time first.

Common error check:

  1. not more cheaper → cheaper
  2. not then in a comparison → than
  3. give a reason after because

Speaking: Compare and negotiate

Role cards:

A – Budget first: You do not want to spend more than €60.

B – Time first: You want to arrive as early as possible.

C – Convenience first: You dislike many changes and long waits.

D – Environment first: You want to reduce environmental impact.

Task: Discuss all four options for three minutes. Ask at least one follow-up question.

Useful language:

  1. I see your point, but ...
  2. What about the cost?
  3. Which option is more convenient?
  4. For me, ... matters more because ...
  5. Can we agree on ...?

Writing: A reasoned recommendation

Write 100–130 words.

Your text should include:

  1. the travel situation,
  2. at least three options,
  3. two clear comparisons,
  4. one disadvantage,
  5. a final recommendation with reasons.

Model frame:

There are four possible ways to travel from Greenford to Baychester. The coach is ..., while the train is ... . The flight is ... than ..., but ... . In my view, ... is the best option for this situation because ... . Another reason is ... . Therefore, I would recommend ... .

Keep your own text: Use feedback to improve your writing, but do not replace your text with a completely new text.

Mediation

Situation: A German-speaking parent asks what the table means. Give the important information in German in about 45 seconds. Do not translate every sentence.

Then switch direction:

German note: „Die Gruppe hat höchstens 70 Euro pro Person. Sie möchte möglichst direkt reisen und nicht erst nachts ankommen.“

Your task: Explain the key information in English to a fictional travel partner.

Deutsch-Hilfe öffnen

Sprachmittlung heißt sinngemäß übertragen. Wähle relevante Informationen aus und passe sie an die Situation an.

Help levels

Level 1 – Small hint: Start with I think ... because ...

Level 2 – Sentence starters: Compared with ... / The main advantage is ... / However ... / Therefore ...

Level 3 – Word bank: cheap · expensive · fast · slow · direct · flexible · convenient · distance · budget · impact

Challenge: Add your own criterion, for example luggage, reliability or accessibility.

Feedback and error analysis

Use this short feedback cycle:

  1. Content: Did I compare more than one option?
  2. Reasoning: Did I explain why?
  3. Language: Did I use correct comparatives?
  4. Clarity: Can another person follow my recommendation?
  5. Improve: Correct two important errors.
  6. Use again: Say or write the improved sentence in a new situation.

AI check: If you use AI support, check facts, sources and language suggestions. Keep your own ideas and wording. Do not enter private data. Do not upload recordings unless this is voluntary, private and clearly agreed.

Transfer

New situation: The budget falls to €65, heavy rain is expected and arrival after 20:00 is not possible.

Respond: Does your recommendation change? Compare at least two options again.
