E9 G - Summarise a story section

Mini description: Read or watch one short story section. Find the central events. Leave out small details. Then write a short summary in your own simple English.

Level: English, Klasse 9, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg. Learning path: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.

Media start

Look at the picture above for 20 seconds.

Quick talk: What are the students doing? What could be important when you tell another person about a text?

Use one starter:

Starter Your idea
I think the main point is ... ...
One important event could be ... ...
A small detail could be ... ...

Think: When you retell a story, you do not need every small action. You need the events that move the story forward.

I can

I can ... Help
understand the main events in a short story section. Who? What happens? What changes?
separate central events from small details. Important = needed to understand the story.
write 4–6 clear summary sentences. First – Then – After that – Finally
use my own words. Do not copy full sentences.
ask for help and improve my text. What does ... mean? / Is this event important?

What you already know

You already know many tools for this task: reading, listening, simple present, time words and short connected sentences.

Warm-up: Tell a partner about a film scene in three sentences. What did you leave out?

Viewing: How does summarising work?

Watch once without stopping. Do not open a transcript yet.

After the first viewing, answer in simple English:

  1. What is a summary?
  2. What should you keep?
  3. What should you leave out?

Watch a second time. Pause when you need it. Only after your own second try, use captions or a transcript if available.

For another explanation, use this video:

Listening tip: You do not need every word. Listen for repeated ideas, names, actions and changes.

Reading: The missed message

This short story section is written for this course.

The missed message

On Tuesday afternoon, Maya waits for her friend Leo outside the sports centre. They want to practise for a school presentation. Leo is late. Maya checks the time twice and buys a bottle of water. After ten minutes, she gets a message from Leo: his bike has a flat tyre, so he cannot come quickly.

Maya is annoyed at first. Then she remembers that the presentation is due the next morning. She calls Leo. They decide to practise by phone. Maya reads the opening part, and Leo gives her two ideas to make it clearer. After twenty minutes, they have a better plan for the presentation. Maya walks home and feels calmer.

First understanding

Answer without translating the whole text.

Question Short answer
Who are the two main people? ...
What problem happens? ...
What do they decide to do? ...
What changes by the end? ...

Main event or small detail?

A central event is needed to understand the story. A small detail gives extra information but is not needed for a short summary.

Story information Main event or small detail?
Leo cannot arrive quickly because his bike has a flat tyre. Main event
Maya checks the time twice. Small detail
Maya calls Leo. Main event
Maya buys a bottle of water. Small detail
They practise by phone and improve their plan. Main event

Rule: If you remove an idea and the story still makes sense, it may be a small detail.

A simple summary method

Use WHO – PROBLEM – ACTION – RESULT.

Step Question Example
WHO Who is important? Maya and Leo
PROBLEM What goes wrong? Leo is delayed.
ACTION What do they do? They practise by phone.
RESULT What changes? Their presentation plan improves.

Model summary: Maya waits for Leo because they want to practise a school presentation. Leo cannot arrive quickly because his bike has a flat tyre. Maya calls him, and they decide to practise by phone. They improve their presentation plan together. In the end, Maya feels calmer.

Notice: The summary does not mention the water bottle or how often Maya checks the time.

Context vocabulary

Word or phrase Simple meaning Example
main event an important action in the story The phone call is a main event.
detail extra information The water bottle is a detail.
problem something that makes the situation difficult Leo has a problem with his bike.
result what happens because of an action The result is a better plan.
in your own words say the same idea differently Do not copy the story sentence.
leave out do not include Leave out small details.

Pronunciation and fluency

Read these chunks slowly, then at a natural speed:

First / Maya waits for Leo. Then / Leo sends a message. After that / they practise by phone. Finally / they have a better plan.

Focus on clear word groups. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.

Optional recording: You may record yourself privately for practice. Recording is voluntary. Do not upload it unless you actively choose to do so and your school rules allow it.

Speaking

Work with a partner.

Round 1: Give a 30-second summary.

Your partner may ask:

Useful question Useful answer
What happens first? First, ...
Why is that important? It is important because ...
Is that a main event? Yes, because ... / No, it is only a detail.
What happens in the end? In the end, ...

Round 2: Improve your summary after one hint.

Writing

Write 4–6 sentences.

Use this frame if you need it:

Part Sentence starter
Start The story section is about ...
Problem The problem starts when ...
Action Then ...
Next action After that, ...
Result In the end, ...

Your goal: short, clear, connected, your own words.

Functional grammar

For a story summary, use the simple present as your main tense.

Example: Leo sends a message. Maya calls him. They practise by phone.

Three accuracy goals are enough:

  1. Use the simple present.
  2. Remember he/she/it + -s.
  3. Connect ideas with words such as then, after that and finally.

Communication comes first. Fix these key points after your first draft.

Mediation

Explain the story section orally to a German-speaking partner in about 30 seconds.

Do not translate every sentence. Give only the central events.

Possible start: Maya und Leo wollen ... Das Problem ist ... Danach ... Am Ende ...

Then return to English and give the same content in 3–4 simple English sentences.

Help levels

Level Use this help
Help 1 Mark WHO, PROBLEM, ACTION and RESULT.
Help 2 Use First – Then – After that – Finally.
Help 3 Use the writing frame.
Help 4 Compare your text with the model only after your own first draft.

Feedback

Ask for one content hint and one language hint.

Check Feedback sentence
Main events You included the important event about ...
Details You can leave out ...
Clear order I can follow the story because ...
Language Check the verb in ...

Keep your own first version. Make changes in a second version so you can see your progress.

Error analysis

Find one example in your own text for each row.

Check Ask yourself
Content Did I include a small detail instead of a main event?
Order Are the events in a clear order?
Verb Did I use simple present?
Third person Does he/she/it need -s?
Own words Did I copy a full sentence?

Do not correct everything at once. Focus on the few errors that make your summary less clear.

Safe use of AI and digital tools

If you use an AI tool because your teacher allows it, first write your own version. Keep that version.

Then ask for limited help, for example: Show me one sentence that is unclear. Do not rewrite my whole text.

Check AI facts, sources and feedback yourself. Do not enter private social-media data, real application data or other personal information. Use fictional data in practice tasks. No recording or text should be uploaded without your own clear choice. External AI access is never required for this course.

Transfer

Use the same method with a new short section from your English book.

WHO – PROBLEM – ACTION – RESULT

Then reduce your first summary by one sentence without losing a central event.
