E9 G - Solve a travel problem
E9 G - Solve a travel problem
Mini-Beschreibung: Solve a simple travel problem in English: a delay, a wrong platform, a lost item or a changed meeting point. You understand the situation, respond, ask for help, use a hint, improve your answer and use the language again.

Look first. What can you see? What may be the problem? Say two short sentences in English.
I can
After this aiMOOC, you can:
- understand the main problem in a short travel message or dialogue.
- ask for time, place, platform and help.
- respond politely and give the important information.
- write a short message about a travel problem.
- mediate the key information from German into simple English.
Language rule: English first. Use German only as a short help when you really need it. Do not translate every sentence.
Before you start
You already know words such as train, bus, station, ticket, time, phone, bag, friend, left, right. Try this quick start:
Your train is late. Your friend is waiting. What do you say?
Starter: Hi, my train is ... . I will be ... minutes late. Can we meet at ... ?
Media start: Spot the problem

Task: Find three kinds of information on the board: destination, time and platform. Do not read every word. Scan for what you need.

Task: Imagine your meeting point has changed. Point to a clear landmark in the picture and make one sentence: Let's meet ... .
The four travel problems
Delay
A delay means your train, bus or flight leaves or arrives later than planned.
Useful English: My train is delayed. – How long is the delay? – What time will it arrive? – I will be about 20 minutes late.

Photo task: You see a delay on the board. Tell a friend what changed. Give the problem, the new time and one next step.
Wrong platform
You are at platform 4, but your train leaves from platform 7.
Useful English: Excuse me, is this the right platform for Bristol? – Which platform do I need? – Where is platform 7?

Photo task: Ask two questions before you move to another platform.
Lost item
You cannot find your phone, jacket, backpack or ticket.
Useful English: I think I lost my backpack. – Where did you last have it? – It is black and quite small. – Is there a lost property office?

Photo task: Describe one fictional lost item with colour, size and place. Never use real private data.

Local transfer: Imagine the item was in a locker at a station. Ask for help in two short English sentences.
Changed meeting point
Your friend sends: New plan: meet under the big clock, not at the café.
Useful English: Okay, I understand. – Do you mean the big clock in the main hall? – I am near the ticket office now. – See you there.

Photo task: Make the meeting point clear. Ask one check question.
Listening and Viewing
First listen for the problem. Then listen again for time, place and next step. Use a transcript only after your first listening attempt.
Viewing 1:
- First view: What is the situation?
- Second view: Note three travel words you hear.
- Third view: Pause after a useful question and say it yourself.
Viewing 2: Listen to a station conversation. Focus on asking about tickets, times and platforms. You do not need to understand every word.
Listening strategy: problem → key detail → action.
Reading: A short problem message
Message
Hi Sam, my train to Oxford is delayed by 25 minutes. The board now says platform 6. I am still at the station. Can we meet at the main entrance at 5:40 instead? Please text me if that does not work.
Read for meaning:
- What is the problem?
- What changed?
- Where is the new meeting point?
- What should Sam do if the plan does not work?
Hint: Circle only time, place, problem and action words.
Context vocabulary
| Word or phrase | Simple meaning | Useful example |
|---|---|---|
| delay | later than planned | There is a 20-minute delay. |
| platform | place where you get on a train | Which platform is it? |
| departure | when a train leaves | What is the departure time? |
| arrival | when a train gets there | The arrival is at 18:10. |
| lost property | place for found items | Where is lost property? |
| meeting point | place where people meet | The meeting point has changed. |
| entrance | way into a place | Meet me at the main entrance. |
| instead | in place of something else | Meet at the clock instead. |
Mini-rule: Learn phrases, not only single words: Which platform ...?, How long ...?, Can we meet ...?
Pronunciation and fluency
Clarity is more important than sounding like a native speaker.
Say these chunks slowly, then at normal speed:
- Excuse me, can you help me?
- Which platform do I need?
- How long is the delay?
- Can we meet at the main entrance instead?
Fluency trick: Speak in chunks. Pause after the important idea, not after every word.
Stress the key word: Which PLATform do I need? – How long is the deLAY?
Speaking: Problem → question → solution
Work with a partner. Use fictional names and travel details.
Traveller: You have one problem card: delay, wrong platform, lost item or changed meeting point.
Helper: Ask one question and give one useful answer.
Simple speaking frame:
Excuse me. I have a problem. My ... .
Can you tell me ... ?
So I need to ... , right?
Thank you.
Challenge: Add a reason with because.
Writing: A short travel message
Write 45–70 words. Keep it clear.
Situation: You planned to meet Alex at 16:30. Your train is 30 minutes late. The platform changed. Suggest a new meeting time and place.
Writing frame:
Hi Alex, ...
My train ...
It now leaves from ...
Can we meet ... instead?
Please ...
See you, ...
Check: problem + new information + question/request + clear ending.
Mediation: Help a visitor
A German announcement says: Der Zug nach Mannheim fährt heute wegen einer Verspätung von Gleis 8 statt von Gleis 5. Abfahrt ist um 14:42 Uhr.
Your English-speaking visitor asks: What does it say?
Do not translate every word. Give only the useful information in simple English.
Starter: Your train to Mannheim ... . It leaves from ... at ... .
Functional grammar
Use grammar to solve the problem.
| Function | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ask for information | question word + auxiliary | Where does the train leave? |
| polite request | Can you + verb | Can you help me? |
| new plan | can + base verb | We can meet at 6. |
| reason | because + clause | I am late because the train is delayed. |
| clear past event | past simple | I left my bag on the train. |
Accuracy focus: Keep questions clear, use the correct time expression and keep the verb after can in the base form.
Help levels
Help 1 – Keywords: delay – platform – lost – meet – next – where – when – help.
Help 2 – Sentence starters: My ... is ... . / Where is ... ? / When does ... ? / Can you ... ?
Help 3 – Full frame: Excuse me. My train is delayed. How long is the delay? Can I use the same ticket?
Use only as much help as you need.
Feedback and improve
Use this short feedback code:
- M = Message clear?
- Q = Useful question?
- K = Key detail included?
- G = One grammar point to improve?
After feedback, improve only one or two things. Keep your own text and your own ideas.
Example: Train late. Where platform? → My train is late. Which platform do I need?
Error analysis
Find and improve the central problem in each sentence.
- Where I can find platform 3? → Think about question word order.
- My train have a delay. → Think about the verb form.
- Can you to help me? → Think about the verb after can.
- I am late because my train is delay. → Think about adjective or noun.
- We meet at 6? → Make the question or suggestion clearer.
Goal: Communication first. Fix errors that make the message unclear or block the task.
Transfer: New travel situation

You are now at an airport. Your suitcase does not arrive.
Use the same strategy:
- Understand: What is the problem?
- Respond: Say what happened.
- Ask: Ask where to go.
- Hint: Use lost luggage or baggage claim if needed.
- Improve: Add one clear detail.
- Use again: Try the same pattern with a lost phone or jacket.
Transfer line: Excuse me, my suitcase is missing. Where can I get help?
Safe and responsible work
Use fictional names, tickets, booking numbers and contact details in all tasks. Do not use private social-media data.
If you record your voice, recording is voluntary and should stay private unless your teacher has agreed a safe class method. Do not upload recordings without permission.
If you use AI support, check facts, sources and feedback. Keep your own text. Do not send personal travel data or private recordings to an external AI service.
Can-do check
Mark each statement: yes / almost / not yet.
- I can understand the main travel problem.
- I can ask about time and platform.
- I can report a lost item simply.
- I can confirm a changed meeting point.
- I can write a short problem message.
- I can give key German travel information in simple English.
- I can improve one important language error after feedback.
If you have three or more not yet, repeat the speaking frame and one listening task.
