E9 G - Separate facts, examples and opinions
E9 G - Separate facts, examples and opinions
Mini-Beschreibung: Ordne Aussagen in einem kurzen englischen Text grundlegenden Kategorien wie fact, example und opinion zu. Du liest, hörst, sprichst und schreibst kurze Texte. Ziel: Klasse 9, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

English first: First try to understand the message. Then respond. Ask if something is unclear. Use a hint only when you need it. Improve your answer and use the skill again.
Media start – before you watch: Look at the title. What do you expect to hear: a fact, an opinion, or both? Watch once without stopping. Then say one English sentence you understood.
I can
| I can ... | Check |
|---|---|
| separate a fact from an opinion in a short text. | □ |
| find an example that explains an idea. | □ |
| give my opinion and add a short reason with because. | □ |
| ask for help: Can you say that again? / What does ... mean? | □ |
| improve a short answer after feedback. | □ |

What you already know
Read these three sentences.
A: Our lesson starts at 8:00. B: English is the best subject. C: For example, we can practise with a short video.
Ask yourself:
- Fact: Can I check the information?
- Opinion: Is it what someone thinks or feels?
- Example: Does it show one clear case?
Quick answer: A = fact, B = opinion, C = example.
Key idea
| Category | Simple question | Useful signals |
|---|---|---|
| fact | Can I check it with reliable evidence? | numbers, dates, names, sources |
| opinion | Does a person think, feel or judge this? | I think, in my view, best, should |
| example | Does this show or illustrate an idea? | for example, for instance, such as |
Important: An example is a job in a text. An example can also contain factual information. In simple tasks, choose the main job of the sentence.

Reading
Fictional school text: Green Week
Westpark School has a Green Week from Monday to Friday. Students can join three activities. For example, the bike team checks lights and brakes. Last year, 84 students joined the week. I think the clean-up activity is the most useful. For example, students collect litter around the sports field. In my view, Green Week makes school life better.
First read: Do not translate every word. Find the main idea.
Second read: Mark each sentence with F, E or O.
| Sentence | Main category |
|---|---|
| Green Week is from Monday to Friday. | fact |
| For example, the bike team checks lights and brakes. | example |
| I think the clean-up activity is the most useful. | opinion |

Context vocabulary
| English | Short help | Use it |
|---|---|---|
| fact | überprüfbare Information | This is a fact. |
| opinion | persönliche Sicht | In my opinion, ... |
| example | Beispiel | For example, ... |
| evidence | Beleg | What is the evidence? |
| source | Quelle | Check the source. |
| reason | Grund | ... because ... |
| claim | Aussage / Behauptung | Can we check this claim? |
Rule: Use the English word first. Use the German help only if you need it.
Listening and Viewing

Round 1 – listen for the idea: What is the difference between a fact and an opinion?
Round 2 – listen for signals: Write down two English signal words or short phrases.
Round 3 – support: Only now use subtitles or the transcript if you need them. Check your first answer.
Partner response: Say: A fact can be checked. An opinion shows what a person thinks.
Pronunciation and fluency

Speak in short chunks. Do not rush.
Fact: The event starts / on Monday. Opinion: I think / this is useful / because it helps students. Example: For example, / the bike team / checks lights.
Stress the important content words: event – Monday – useful – helps – bike team – lights.
Goal: Clear meaning is more important than sounding like a native speaker.
Speaking
Work with a partner.
Student A: Read one sentence from the Green Week text. Student B: Say fact, example or opinion and give one short reason.
Use these frames:
I think it is a fact because we can check it. I think it is an opinion because it shows a judgement. I think it is an example because it shows one case.
Then ask one follow-up question:
Why do you think that? Can you show me the signal word? Can we check this information?

Functional grammar
You only need three useful patterns.
| Function | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| opinion | I think + sentence | I think the activity is useful. |
| reason | sentence + because + reason | It is useful because students work together. |
| example | For example, + sentence | For example, the bike team checks lights. |
Accuracy focus: Use because for a reason. Use For example, to introduce an example. Keep sentences short and clear.
Writing
Write a mini text with four sentences about a school activity.
- Fact: Give one checkable fact.
- Example: Add one example with For example, ...
- Opinion: Give your opinion with I think ...
- Reason: Add a reason with because ...
Model: The school library opens at 8:00. For example, students can read there before lessons. I think the library is useful because it is a quiet place to work.
Keep your own first version. Do not replace it with an AI-written text.
Mediation
A German-speaking classmate asks: What is the difference between fact, example and opinion?
Explain the key idea in simple German in 20–30 seconds. Do not translate the whole English lesson sentence by sentence. Then give one English example.
Help levels
| Level | Help |
|---|---|
| Hint 1 | Look for signal words: I think, best, for example. |
| Hint 2 | Ask: Can I check it? – Is it one case? – Is it a judgement? |
| Hint 3 | Use the frame: It is a ... because ... |

Feedback and improve
Give short, useful feedback.
Two things that work: Your category is clear. Your reason uses because.
One next step: Add a signal word. or Check if the sentence can be proved.
Then improve one sentence and use the same pattern with a new topic.
Error check
Sentence: The school has 600 students, so it is a fantastic school.
This sentence mixes two jobs.
The school has 600 students. → fact if the number is supported by a reliable source. It is a fantastic school. → opinion.
Fix: Split mixed sentences when that makes the meaning clearer.
Another common error:
For example, I think school uniforms are best.
The words for example do not automatically make the whole sentence an example. The main message is still an opinion.
Safe and responsible media use
Use fictional names and fictional school profiles in tasks. Do not use private social-media data. Audio or video recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless everyone agrees to share them. Do not upload recordings or personal information to external AI tools without permission.
AI can suggest categories, sources or feedback, but AI can be wrong. Check facts with reliable sources. Keep your own drafts and compare your changes.
Transfer
Try the skill with three short text types:
- News text: Find one checkable statement and its source.
- Review: Find one personal judgement and one reason.
- School information: Find one fact and one example.
Ask the same three questions every time: Can I check it? Is it one case? Is it a judgement?
Review task: Watch only the part you need. Pause after a statement and label it aloud: fact or opinion. Add example when the speaker gives a concrete case.
Can-do check
| I can now ... | yes | almost | not yet |
|---|---|---|---|
| identify a fact in a short text. | □ | □ | □ |
| identify an opinion and give a reason. | □ | □ | □ |
| identify the main job of an example. | □ | □ | □ |
| ask for repetition or meaning in English. | □ | □ | □ |
| improve one sentence after feedback. | □ | □ | □ |
