Einleitung

E9 G - Read a longer graded reader independently

Mini-Beschreibung: Read one level-appropriate graded reader or one longer story. Use a chapter plan, audio support and vocabulary support. Step by step, use less help and read more independently.

Du liest eine levelgerechte englische Ganzschrift oder längere Geschichte. Du arbeitest möglichst zuerst auf Englisch. Eine vollständige Übersetzung ist nicht das Ziel. Die Originallektüre wird in diesem aiMOOC nicht reproduziert.

Look – think – say: Look at the photo. What helps you read for a longer time? Say two short ideas in English.

Media task – use the video actively: Before watching, write two reading tips you already know. On the first watch, listen for the main idea. On the second watch, note three useful ideas. Use subtitles or a transcript only after your first listening attempt.

Deutsch als Hilfe: Du musst nicht jedes Wort verstehen. Höre zuerst auf die Hauptidee. Nutze danach gezielt Hilfen.

Dieser Kurs passt zum G-Niveau in Klasse 9: klare Aufgaben, häufige Wörter, überschaubare Texte, deutlicher Kontext, moderates Audio und gestufte Hilfen. Kommunikation und Verstehen kommen vor wenigen zentralen Genauigkeitszielen.

I can – meine Ziele

I can ... Das bedeutet
read for gist I can find the main idea of a chapter.
read for key details I can find important people, places and events.
use context I can guess some words before I use a dictionary.
use support I can use audio, a chapter plan and a small word list when needed.
respond and ask I can give a short opinion and ask a question.
become more independent I can choose less support when I no longer need it.

Vorwissen aktivieren

Choose and explain: What type of story would you like to read: mystery, friendship, adventure, school life, fantasy or another type? Use one reason.

Sentence frame: I would like to read a ... story because ...

Think about your last longer text in English. What helped you: pictures, a word list, audio, chapter summaries or a partner? Choose one support tool that you want to use first.

Dein Lesemodus: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again

Schritt Deine Aktion
English first Read or listen before you translate anything.
understand Find the main idea and one or two key details.
respond Give a short answer, reaction or opinion.
ask Ask when something important is unclear.
hint Use one small help: context, word list, audio or sentence starter.
improve Correct one important point in your answer.
use again Use the improved word or sentence in the next chapter.

Rule: Do not translate the whole chapter. Use German only when a short explanation is really needed.

Reader setup: Wähle eine passende Lektüre

A suitable graded reader has a clear story, mostly familiar language and enough support for your level. You should be able to follow the main events without stopping at every sentence.

Before you start: Check the title, cover, blurb, chapter number, available audio and vocabulary help. Do not search for a full translation.

Quick check: Read one short sample page from your legal copy. Can you say who is involved, where the scene takes place and what is happening? If yes, the level may fit. If not, try more support or a simpler reader.

Chapter plan: Dein roter Faden

Use the plan after each chapter. Keep the notes short.

Chapter Who? Where? Key event One useful word My question
Example Alex and Sam at school They find a strange note. clue Who wrote it?
Your chapter ... ... ... ... ...

G-level rule: One or two short notes per box are enough. Do not copy long sentences from the book.

Hilfen langsam abbauen

Phase Support Your goal
Start chapter plan + audio + small word list + sentence frames Understand the main story.
Middle chapter plan + selected audio + fewer word hints Guess more from context.
Later short chapter plan + support only when needed Read longer parts independently.
Finish self-chosen support Explain the story and your opinion in your own words.

Listening / Viewing: Audio als Lesestütze

Use audio to support meaning, rhythm and pronunciation.

  1. First listen: Close the transcript. Listen for who, where and what happens.
  2. Second listen: Follow the printed text or your legal e-book and mark one important detail.
  3. Third step only if needed: Check the transcript or vocabulary support.
  4. Repeat: Listen to one short passage again and read along quietly.

For G-level work, clear moderate speech is best. More than one speaker is possible, but repeat difficult parts.

Optional strategy clip: Listen only for familiar words and one useful learning tip. You do not need to understand every sentence. Use subtitles after the first attempt.

Reading: vom Überblick zum Detail

Pass 1 – gist: Read the chapter without stopping for every unknown word. Ask: What is this chapter mainly about?

Pass 2 – key details: Find two or three important details. Mark only information you need for the chapter plan.

Pass 3 – problem words: Work on a small number of words that block understanding.

Mini response: Write two sentences: In this chapter, ... and I think ... because ...

Kontextwortschatz

Do not collect every new word. Choose words that are important for the story or useful in many situations.

Word Context clue My guess Check New sentence
clue The detective finds a clue and understands more. Hinweis dictionary or glossary The clue changes the story.

Three-step vocabulary rule: First guess. Then check. Then use the word in a new sentence.

Useful story words can include: character, setting, problem, choice, clue, secret, danger, reason, change, ending, chapter, narrator.

Aussprache und Fluency

The goal is clear and understandable English, not accent-free English.

Choose one short sentence from your own legal copy.

  1. Listen once.
  2. Mark the stressed words.
  3. Read the sentence aloud.
  4. Repeat once with smoother rhythm.

Private option: You may record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless you actively choose to share them. No automatic upload is needed.

Speaking: react, ask, explain

Use short, clear turns.

React: I was surprised because ...

Ask: Why did ...? / What does ... mean here? / Can you explain that part?

Give an opinion: I think the character made a good / bad choice because ...

Short presentation: Speak for about one minute about one chapter: main event, one character, one question and your opinion.

Writing: short and structured

Write in your own words. Use your chapter plan.

Chapter response:

The chapter is mainly about ...

The most important event is ...

I think ... because ...

My question is ...

For a longer final task, write a short book recommendation, report or opinion text. Use a clear beginning, middle and ending. Sentence frames are allowed when you need them.

Mediation: wichtige Informationen weitergeben

Mediation is not word-for-word translation.

Situation: A German-speaking classmate wants to know what happened in one chapter. Give the most important information orally in simple German. Keep names and key facts correct. Do not translate every sentence.

Then switch back to English and say: The key point is ...

Functional grammar: nur was Du wirklich brauchst

Focus on two accuracy goals.

Goal 1 – present simple for a plot summary: The main character finds a letter. She decides to open it.

Goal 2 – connectors: Use because, but and so to connect ideas.

Example: I like the chapter because the problem is clear, but the ending is surprising.

Accuracy supports communication. Do not stop speaking or writing because one form is not perfect.

Hilfestufen

Hint 1 – idea: Look again at the chapter title, first paragraph and last paragraph.

Hint 2 – language: Use a sentence starter: The chapter is mainly about ...

Hint 3 – choice: Choose one: person / place / problem / decision / result.

Start with the smallest hint. Use a stronger hint only when you still need it.

Feedback, Fehleranalyse und Verbesserung

Use this short loop after a speaking or writing task:

Message first: Is the main idea understandable?

One accuracy target: Check only one or two important points.

Improve: Rewrite or repeat the sentence.

Use again: Use the improved form in the next task.

Example: He go to the station. → He goes to the station.

Example: I like the chapter because exciting. → I like the chapter because it is exciting.

KI, Quellen und Datenschutz

Use digital tools only when your school or teacher allows them. Keep your own first draft. Check AI-generated facts, quotations, chapter information and feedback against your legal copy and reliable sources.

Do not upload a complete copyrighted reader, private recordings, private social-media data or real application profiles to an external AI service. For practice profiles or job texts, use fictional names and fictional data.

A useful AI request asks for a hint, a language check or a question, not a complete replacement text. Your own text should remain visible so that you can compare and improve it.

Transfer: use the strategy again

Use the same cycle with a new chapter, a new longer story or another graded reader:

English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.

Try to remove one support tool that you no longer need.
