Mini-Beschreibung: Lerne und nutze zentralen Wortschatz zu wildlife, habitats, pollution, protection und national parks. Du verstehst kurze englische Texte, Bilder und Infografiken und sprichst und schreibst mit einfachen, klaren Sätzen über Naturschutz.

Zielgruppe: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 9, Baden-Württemberg, G-Niveau.

Sprachweg: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.

Einleitung

Nature is all around us. Animals need safe places to live. People need clean air, clean water and healthy ecosystems. But pollution and habitat loss can damage nature. In this aiMOOC, you learn useful English words and simple phrases to talk about these problems and possible solutions.

Look first – do not translate every word.

  1. Bildimpuls Wildlife: What can you see? Name three things in English.
  2. Bildimpuls Habitat: Where does the animal live?
  3. Bildimpuls Protection: Why could this place need protection?

Useful starters: I can see … / The animal lives in … / The place looks … / It needs protection because …

I can – Lernziele

Am Ende kannst Du sagen:

  1. I can name important words about wildlife, habitats, pollution and protection.
  2. I can understand the main idea of a short text or video.
  3. I can ask a simple follow-up question.
  4. I can give my opinion and one reason.
  5. I can write a short structured text about protecting nature.
  6. I can use should, shouldn’t, must and mustn’t in useful sentences.

Vorwissen aktivieren

Think for 60 seconds. Use English first.

What do you already know?

  1. wildlife
  2. pollution
  3. national park
  4. endangered animals
  5. recycling

Mini-help: If a word is missing, describe it: “It is a place where …” or “It is a problem when …”.

Key vocabulary

A habitat is the natural home of a plant or animal. A wetland, forest, river, coast or grassland can be a habitat.

English Easy English Deutsch-Hilfe Example
wildlife animals and plants living in nature Wildtiere und Pflanzen We can protect wildlife.
habitat a natural home Lebensraum A wetland is a habitat.
species one type of animal or plant Art Some species are endangered.
endangered in danger of disappearing gefährdet The animal is endangered.
pollution harmful waste in air, water or land Umweltverschmutzung Plastic pollution harms animals.
litter rubbish left in a place Müll Do not leave litter.
protect keep safe schützen National parks protect nature.
conservation protection of nature Naturschutz Conservation needs people and rules.
national park a protected natural area Nationalpark Many animals live in national parks.
recycle use material again recyceln We should recycle bottles.

Learn in chunks, not as single words: protect wildlife – save a habitat – reduce pollution – pick up litter – protect endangered species – visit a national park – recycle plastic.

Word families and context clues

You do not need to translate every word. Look for words you know and use the sentence around the new word.

Example: “The river is polluted. Fish cannot live well in the dirty water.” You can guess: polluted means that the river is dirty or harmful.

Word family: protect → protection / pollute → pollution / conserve → conservation.

Media focus 1 – Pollution

See – think – speak:

  1. What kind of pollution can you see?
  2. What can happen to wildlife?
  3. What should visitors do?

Useful language: There is … / This can harm … / Visitors should … / People shouldn’t …

Infographic task: Look at the infographic for 30 seconds. Then close or scroll past it and name two facts or ideas you remember. Check again. Improve your answer.

Listening and viewing 1 – Plastic in the ocean

Before watching: Predict three words you may hear: plastic – ocean – reuse – wildlife – waste.

First viewing: Watch for the main idea. Do not use a transcript.

Choose the best main idea in your own words: The video explains why plastic is a problem and how people can use less plastic and reuse materials.

Second viewing: Listen for these words or ideas: plastic, ocean, reuse, waste.

After the second viewing: If needed, use subtitles or the transcript as a help. Do this only after your first listening attempt.

Respond: “One important idea is … because …”

Media focus 2 – Wildlife and habitats

Plastic waste can become part of an animal’s habitat. That can be dangerous. Birds can get caught in fishing nets or other waste.

Think: Is litter only ugly, or can it be dangerous? Give one reason.

Listening and viewing 2 – Habitat loss

First viewing: Watch for the animals and the place. What problem is mentioned?

Second viewing: Listen for the idea of habitat loss. What happens when animals lose space to live?

Help: You do not need every word. Listen for names, places, repeated words and cause–effect ideas.

Speak: “Habitat loss is a problem because …”

Reading – A national park

Read once for the main idea.

Yellowstone is a large national park in the United States. It is home to animals such as bison, elk, bears and wolves. A national park protects landscapes, plants and wildlife. Visitors can enjoy nature, but they must follow rules. They must keep a safe distance from wild animals and they must not feed them. Good rules protect both people and wildlife.

Main idea: National parks protect nature, but visitors also have responsibilities.

Read again and answer in short English sentences:

  1. Name two animals in the text.
  2. Why are rules important?
  3. What must visitors not do?
  4. What do national parks protect?

Reading strategy

Use this order:

  1. Title and picture: What is the topic?
  2. First read: What is the main idea?
  3. Second read: Find details.
  4. Unknown word: Look at the sentence and guess.
  5. Check: Use a dictionary only if the word is important.

Functional grammar for communication

You need only a few strong forms.

Function Form Example
advice should / shouldn’t We should protect habitats.
rule must / mustn’t Visitors mustn’t feed wild animals.
reason because We should recycle because plastic can harm wildlife.
opinion I think … I think national parks are important.
ask Why do you think that? Why do you think that?

Accuracy focus: After should, shouldn’t, must, mustn’t use the base form: protect, recycle, keep, feed.

Correct: We should protect wildlife. Not: We should to protect wildlife.

Pronunciation and fluency

Focus on being clear, not accent-free.

Chunk practice:

  1. protect wildlife
  2. reduce pollution
  3. endangered species
  4. national park
  5. keep a safe distance

Rhythm tip: Stress the important words: PROTECT WILDLIFE, REDUCE POLLUTION.

Fluency ladder:

  1. Say one chunk.
  2. Put it into one sentence.
  3. Add a reason with because.
  4. Ask a partner: “What do you think?”

Example: “We should protect wildlife because animals need safe habitats. What do you think?”

Speaking – React, ask, improve

Work with a partner or speak quietly to yourself.

Situation: There is a lot of litter near a river.

Student A: Give one idea. Student B: React and ask one question.

Useful phrases:

I think we should … I agree because … I’m not sure. Maybe we can … Why do you think that? What can students do? Can you give an example?

Improve: Say your answer a second time. Add one reason or one example.

Recording option: A recording is voluntary. Keep it private unless you actively choose to share it. Do not upload recordings or personal data without permission.

Writing – Short message for a nature action day

Write 70–100 words.

Task: Your class plans a “Protect Nature Day”. Write a short message for students.

Include:

  1. the problem
  2. two actions
  3. one rule with must or mustn’t
  4. one reason with because
  5. a short final sentence

Writing frame:

“Hi everyone, our nature action day is about … We should … We should also … Everyone must / mustn’t … This is important because … Let’s …”

Improve your text: Keep your own text. If you use digital or AI feedback, check every suggestion. Do not replace your whole text automatically. Check facts, sources and language before you use changes.

Mediation – Deutsch verstehen, Englisch weitergeben

Situation: Auf einem deutschen Schild steht: „Bitte auf den Wegen bleiben. Wildtiere nicht füttern. Müll wieder mitnehmen.“

Explain the key information to an English-speaking visitor. Do not translate word by word.

Possible structure: “The sign says you should stay on the paths. You mustn’t feed wildlife. Please take your litter with you.”

Help levels

Help 1 – Words: wildlife, habitat, litter, protect, recycle, national park.

Help 2 – Starters: I can see … / The problem is … / We should … / We mustn’t … / This is important because …

Help 3 – Model: “The river has a lot of litter. We should pick it up because plastic can harm wildlife.”

Use only as much help as you need.

Feedback and error analysis

After speaking or writing, check only three things:

  1. Meaning: Can another person understand me?
  2. Key grammar: Did I use should/must + base form?
  3. Reason: Did I use because correctly?

Improve one sentence:

First try: “We should to recycle because plastic bad.” Better: “We should recycle because plastic can harm wildlife.”

Then use the improved pattern again with a new idea.

Transfer – Your local environment

Think about a park, river, forest, lake or green space near you.

Choose one:

  1. What wildlife may live there?
  2. What problems can people cause?
  3. What should visitors do?
  4. What rule would you add and why?

Keep private places and personal data private. Use only general place information if you share your answer.

Can-do check

Tick or say: yes – almost – not yet.

  1. I can explain wildlife, habitat and pollution in simple English.
  2. I can understand the main idea of a short nature video.
  3. I can find key information in a short text.
  4. I can use should/shouldn’t and must/mustn’t.
  5. I can give my opinion and one reason.
  6. I can ask a follow-up question.
  7. I can write a short text about protecting nature.

If you answer not yet, repeat one media task and use Help 2 or Help 3.
