Media start – English first: Watch the video once. Do not try to understand every word. Write down two useful ideas for your speaking exam. Watch again and add one more idea. Use subtitles or a transcript only after your first listening attempt.

Your learning loop: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.

Es gibt bewusst keine Vollübersetzung. Du probierst zuerst selbst. Danach nutzt Du eine kleine Hilfe. Dann verbesserst Du Deine Antwort und verwendest die neue Formulierung noch einmal.

Wichtig: Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit. Fehler dürfen vorkommen. Konzentriere Dich auf Kommunikation und wenige wichtige Accuracy-Ziele.

I-can-Ziele

  1. I can understand: I can find the main idea in a clear audio or video.
  2. I can read: I can find important information in a short text.
  3. I can react: I can answer, agree, disagree and give a simple reason.
  4. I can ask: I can ask for repetition or clarification.
  5. I can speak: I can give a short, clear presentation with notes.
  6. I can write: I can write a structured email, report, opinion or job-related text.
  7. I can mediate: I can pass on the important message in simple English.
  8. I can improve: I can find useful feedback, correct key errors and use the better version again.

Vorwissen: Mein Startpunkt

Markiere für Dich: green = sicher, yellow = manchmal, red = noch schwierig.

Skill My first check One next step
Listening I get the main idea. Listen twice and note key words.
Reading I find important details. Read the task first.
Speaking I can keep a short conversation going. Use follow-up questions.
Writing I can structure a short text. Plan three points first.
Mediation I can explain the key message. Leave out unimportant details.

Do not start with your weakest skill only. Build confidence with one skill that already works and one skill that needs practice.

Prüfungsrahmen: Was trainiere ich?

Check before your exam: Prüfungsregeln können geändert werden. Prüfe deshalb vor Deiner Prüfung immer die aktuellen Hinweise Deiner Schule und des Kultusministeriums.

Aktuelle Prüfungstermine Baden-Württemberg

Bildungsplan Englisch als erste Fremdsprache

Listening and Viewing: main idea first

First listen: What is the topic? Write only three key words.

Second listen: Find two details.

After listening: Check subtitles or a transcript only now, if available. Find one sentence that helped You.

If there are several speakers, do not follow every word. Ask: Who is speaking? What do they want? What is the result?

Mini simulation: Listen to a short school, job or free-time audio. After the first listening, write one sentence: The main idea is ... After the second listening, add two facts. If one word is unknown, keep listening.

Reading: task first, text second

Step 1: Read the task.

Step 2: Skim the text. What is it about?

Step 3: Scan for names, places, reasons, times or other details.

Step 4: Read the important sentence again.

Do not translate the whole text. Use the context around an unknown word.

Example: Mia was exhausted after the long shift, so she went straight to bed. You may not know exhausted. The context tells You that Mia is probably very tired.

Kontextwortschatz: useful words, not endless lists

Learn words in short chunks.

Useful chunk Use it for
I think that ... opinion
One reason is ... reason
For example, ... example
I agree because ... reaction
Could you repeat that, please? ask for help
The main point is ... mediation
I would like to apply for ... job-related writing

Use again: Pick three chunks. Say or write one new sentence with each chunk. Use the same chunks again two days later.

Pronunciation and Fluency: clear before perfect

You do not need to sound like a native speaker. Your goal is clear speech.

Try this: Speak in short groups of words. Pause between ideas, not after every word.

Example: In my opinion / the school should offer more sports / because many students want to be active.

If a word is difficult, slow down a little. If You lose a word, use another simple word or explain it.

Useful rescue phrases:

  1. Let me think for a moment.
  2. I mean ...
  3. It is a thing you use for ...
  4. I don't know the exact word, but ...
  5. Could you say that again, please?

Speaking: respond, ask, continue

In a communication task, do more than give one short answer. React to the other person.

Simple pattern: answer → reason → question.

Example:

A: I think we should choose the sports day.

B: I agree because many students can join. What do you think about the time?

A: Maybe Friday afternoon. Is that okay for you?

This is more useful than a long memorised speech because You show that You can communicate.

Speaking simulation: three short parts

Use only fictional information.

Part A – short presentation

Topic: A job I would like to try.

Speak for about one to two minutes in training. Use five notes only:

  1. job
  2. place
  3. tasks
  4. skills
  5. reason

Part B – dialogue

Situation: You and a partner plan a class activity. Choose between a sports afternoon, a film afternoon and a small school event. Give ideas, react, disagree politely and find one result.

Part C – guided mediation

A German-speaking visitor asks what a short English school notice means. Pass on only the important information in German or explain a German message in simple English, depending on the task. Do not translate every word.

After the simulation: What worked? Where did You stop? Which phrase helped You continue?

Mediation: message before translation

Mediation means that You pass on meaning for another person.

English message: The youth centre is closed on Tuesday because of staff training. The music workshop will take place on Thursday at 5 p.m. instead.

Your job: A friend asks in German when the music workshop is. Give the important information. You do not need to translate every sentence.

Strategy: Who needs what information? Find the message. Leave out details that are not needed.

Writing: plan, write, check

Before You write, underline the task words. Then make a three-point plan.

Email frame:

Hi Sam,

I'm writing about ...

First, ...

Also, ...

I think ... because ...

Best wishes,

Alex

Opinion frame:

I think ... . One reason is ... . For example, ... . Another point is ... . So I think ... .

Job-related frame:

I am interested in ... . I am reliable and ... . I have experience with ... . I would like to learn ... .

All names, places, phone numbers and application details in this course are fictional. Do not use private social-media data.

Functional grammar: only what helps communication

Do not try to repair every grammar topic at once.

Focus on a few high-value targets:

  1. word order: I often play football after school.
  2. questions: What do you think?
  3. past events: Last week I helped at a school event.
  4. reasons: I chose it because it is useful.
  5. connections: and, but, because, so, first, then, finally
  6. modals: can, should, would

When You check a text, choose only two accuracy targets. First make the message clear. Then improve grammar.

Hilfestufen: use only as much help as You need

Hint 1 – key words: reason – example – question.

Hint 2 – sentence starters: I think ... / One reason is ... / What do you think?

Hint 3 – mini model: I think the sports day is a good idea because many students can join. What do you think?

After using a hint, close it. Say or write Your own version. Then use the new pattern in a different task.

Feedback: meaning first, then improve

Use this short feedback order:

  1. Message: Did I answer the task?
  2. Communication: Could another person understand me?
  3. Two targets: Which two errors should I fix now?
  4. Use again: Can I use the improved sentence in a new task?

Example:

First version: Yesterday I go to the job fair and it was good.

Improved version: Yesterday I went to the job fair, and it was useful.

New use: Last week I went to a sports event, and it was exciting.

Keep Your own first version. It shows Your learning process.

Fehleranalyse: find the pattern

Do not count only mistakes. Find one pattern.

My error Better version My rule New example
I am agree. I agree. No am before agree. I agree with this idea.
He go to school. He goes to school. Add -s with he, she, it in the simple present. She works in a café.

Choose one or two patterns per week. Too many corrections at the same time can hide what You already do well.

Zeit: build Your own checkpoints

In the detailed 2025/2026 rules, the written English examination had 120 minutes of working time and a 20-minute break between Listening and the remaining sections. A bilingual dictionary was allowed in the later parts, but not in Listening. Check the current rules for Your own examination year.

For training, test this personal B–D plan and change it after each simulation:

Training phase Start plan My better plan after simulation
Reading and text tasks 25 minutes ...
Vocabulary and grammar 20 minutes ...
Writing 35 minutes ...
Final check 10 minutes ...

The numbers above are a training plan, not an official time allocation. Your goal is to find a plan that works for You.

Hilfsmittel: use them, do not hide in them

A dictionary can help, but every lookup costs time.

Good reason to look up a word: The word is important for the task and context is not enough.

Bad reason to look up a word: You want to translate every unknown word.

During practice, mark every dictionary lookup with a small dot. After the task, ask: Which lookups were really useful?

Umgang mit Unsicherheit: keep moving

If You do not know something, use a next action.

Problem Next action
I missed a word in listening. Keep listening for the main idea.
I do not know a word in reading. Use the sentence around it.
I do not understand my partner. Ask for repetition.
I forget a word while speaking. Describe it with simple words.
I am stuck in writing. Leave a small gap and continue.
I am unsure about grammar. Choose a simple sentence that You can control.

Rule: One difficult word should not stop the whole task.

Simulation 1: Safety round

Choose one short Listening task, one Reading task and one one-minute Speaking task.

Use all available learning hints.

Afterwards write:

  1. One thing that worked.
  2. One moment when You were unsure.
  3. One help that was useful.
  4. One thing You will try next time.

Simulation 2: Less help

Repeat with new material. This time use only Hint 1 and Hint 2.

For speaking, do not write complete sentences before You start. Use key words.

For writing, plan three content points before You begin.

Afterwards compare Simulation 1 and Simulation 2. Did less help make You more independent or only more nervous? Adjust Your next step.

Simulation 3: Exam-like round

Use a new task. Set a realistic time limit. Do not pause the task to search for perfect language.

For speaking, practise a short presentation, a dialogue and a mediation task in one sequence.

For writing, complete the text before You correct details.

Afterwards rate only these points:

  1. Did I finish?
  2. Was my message clear?
  3. Did I use reasons or examples?
  4. Did I recover after a difficult moment?
  5. Which two language targets need work?

Simulation 4: Transfer round

Change the topic.

If You practised school, now use work, free time, travel, health or community.

Reuse the same strategies with new content. A strategy is strong only if it works in more than one topic.

KI, Quellen und Datenschutz

AI feedback can be useful, but it can also be wrong. Check facts, vocabulary and grammar with a reliable dictionary, your learning material, a teacher or another trusted source.

Keep Your own text before any correction. Compare versions and decide which change You understand.

Use only fictional profiles and application data in this course. Do not enter private social-media information.

Audio or video recordings for practice are optional. If You record Yourself, keep the recording private unless You have consciously chosen to share it. This course does not require uploads or access by an external AI system.

Avoid cultural stereotypes. Describe people and places with concrete information instead.

Medien-Check: use media actively

The Wikimedia Commons images in this aiMOOC are used as learning signals for Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing, Time and Checklists. Their licence information is available on the respective Commons file page.

The YouTube videos are embedded from BBC Learning English. Use them in two steps: first for meaning, then for details. Do not open subtitles or a transcript before Your first listening attempt.

Meine persönliche Hauptschulabschluss-Strategie

Complete this after all four simulations.

Area My strategy
Listening First I ...
Reading When I see a long text, I ...
Vocabulary If I do not know a word, I ...
Speaking To keep talking, I ...
Writing Before I write, I ...
Mediation I first find ...
Time My checkpoints are ...
Help I use a hint when ...
Uncertainty If I get stuck, I ...
Final check My two accuracy targets are ...

Your strategy should be short enough that You can remember it under pressure.

Mein persönlicher Lernplan

Choose small, repeatable practice blocks.

Week Main focus Short practice Evidence
Week 1 Listening + useful chunks Two short listenings and five phrase repetitions I can state the main idea.
Week 2 Reading + writing One timed reading and one short structured text I finish and check two language targets.
Week 3 Speaking + mediation Two private practice rounds with fictional topics I react, ask and continue.
Week 4 Full strategy One exam-like simulation and one transfer task I use my own plan without extra help.

After each week change only one thing in the plan. Keep what works.

Mein Can-do-Profil

Mark each row with Yes, Sometimes or Not yet.

I can ... My check My next action
understand the main idea of clear, moderate audio. ... ...
find important details after a second listening. ... ...
read for gist without translating everything. ... ...
use context for an unknown word. ... ...
react and ask a follow-up question. ... ...
give an opinion with a simple reason. ... ...
give a short presentation with key-word notes. ... ...
write a clear text with a beginning, middle and ending. ... ...
pass on the important message in a mediation task. ... ...
use a time plan and continue after uncertainty. ... ...
find two useful language errors and improve them. ... ...

My final sentence: My strongest strategy is ... . My next goal is ... .

Offene Aufgaben

Leicht

  1. Useful chunks: Wähle fünf nützliche Satzbausteine und schreibe zu jedem einen eigenen einfachen Satz.
  2. One-minute talk: Sprich eine Minute über ein vertrautes Thema. Nutze nur fünf Stichwörter.
  3. Context detective: Markiere in einem kurzen englischen Text drei Stellen, an denen der Kontext Dir beim Verstehen hilft.
  4. My two targets: Nimm einen eigenen kurzen Text und verbessere nur zwei wichtige Fehlermuster.

Standard

Beschreibe, was weiterhin funktioniert.
  4. Final strategy portfolio: Dokumentiere Simulation 1, eine verbesserte Version, Deinen Lernplan und Dein Can-do-Profil. Verwende nur eigene oder rechtssicher bereitgestellte Materialien.

Text bearbeiten Bild einfügen Video einbetten Interaktive Aufgaben erstellen

Lernkontrolle
