E9 G - Introduce yourself in a job interview

Lernweg: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.

Einleitung

A job interview is a conversation between an applicant and an employer. In this course, you do not apply for a real job. You practise a short fictional internship interview.

Your aim is not perfect English. Your aim is to speak clearly, give useful information and keep the conversation going.

Important: Use only fictional application data. Do not use private addresses, phone numbers, passwords or social-media profiles. Audio or video recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless you clearly choose otherwise.

I-can-Ziele

After this course, you can say:

  1. I can introduce myself in a short internship interview.
  2. I can talk about my interests with simple reasons.
  3. I can name useful skills and give one example.
  4. I can talk about school subjects and connect them to an internship.
  5. I can answer simple follow-up questions.
  6. I can ask one simple question at the end of an interview.
  7. I can improve my answer after feedback.

Vorwissen: Warm-up

Look at the interview picture. Do not translate every word. Use what you already know.

Think – pair – speak:

  1. What can you see?
  2. Who is the interviewer?
  3. Who is the applicant?
  4. Which three English words fit the situation?
  5. What could the first question be?

Useful start: “I can see …” / “Maybe …” / “I think …”

Medien-Einstieg: Listening and Viewing

Watch the first part of this BBC Learning English video. It shows a job-interview context and useful interview language.

First viewing – no transcript yet.

  1. Who is preparing for an interview?
  2. Is the situation formal or informal?
  3. Listen for one useful phrase.
  4. What helps the speaker sound prepared?

Second viewing: Listen again. Stop after short sections. Repeat one phrase you understand.

Hint 1: Listen for words you already know.

Hint 2: Do not try to understand every word.

Hint 3: Focus on the question and the main idea of the answer.

Audio-Modell 1: A short self-introduction

First listening rule: Do not read the script first. Ask a partner or teacher to read the model aloud at a moderate, clear pace. You may also use a local text-to-speech function on the device. No external AI service is needed.

Listening task: Write down only four key words:

  1. name
  2. interest
  3. skill
  4. school subject

Transcript – open only after listening:

“Hello. My name is Jamie. I am in Year 9. I am interested in computers and music. I am good at working in a team, and I can learn new tasks quickly. At school, I like English and computer science because I enjoy practical tasks. I would like to learn more during this internship.”

Check: Did you hear all four parts?

Understand: Build the interview map

A simple self-introduction can follow this order:

  1. Start: Hello. My name is …
  2. School: I am in Year 9.
  3. Interests: I am interested in …
  4. Skills: I am good at … / I can …
  5. School subjects: I like … because …
  6. Internship link: I would like to learn …
  7. Finish: Thank you.

This order is a support tool. You do not need to memorise every sentence.

Reading: A fictional profile

Fictional candidate: Mia Winter

Mia is 15 and in Year 9. She likes art, English and working with computers. In her free time, she draws simple posters and helps with a school project. She says she is patient and reliable. She wants a short internship in a local media workshop because she wants to learn how a team plans small projects.

Reading task:

  1. Find one interest.
  2. Find one skill.
  3. Find two school subjects.
  4. Find one reason for the internship.

Do not copy the whole text. Use key words.

Kontextwortschatz

English Simple meaning / hint Example
interest something you like I am interested in music.
skill something you can do Teamwork is one of my skills.
reliable you do what you promise I am reliable.
patient you can stay calm I am patient with new tasks.
organised you plan your work I am organised.
teamwork working with other people I like teamwork.
practical connected to doing things I like practical tasks.
internship short work experience I am looking for an internship.
improve get better I want to improve my English.
learn get new knowledge or skills I want to learn new tasks.

Mini-task: Choose only three words that fit your fictional candidate.

Pronunciation and Fluency

You do not need to sound like a native speaker. Verständlichkeit vor Akzentfreiheit.

Practise in short chunks:

  1. “I am interested in …”
  2. “I am good at …”
  3. “My favourite subject is …”
  4. “I like it because …”
  5. “I would like to learn …”

Fluency trick: Speak in thought groups. Make a short pause after each idea.

Example: “I like science / because I enjoy experiments.”

Echo practice: A partner says one line. You repeat it once. Then you change one word and say it again.

Functional Grammar: English that helps you communicate

You only need a few central structures.

Function Structure Example
say what you like I like / I enjoy … I enjoy art.
say an interest I am interested in … I am interested in technology.
say a skill I can … / I am good at … I can work in a team.
give a reason because … I like English because I enjoy speaking.
say a goal I would like to … I would like to learn more.

Accuracy focus:

  1. Use I am interested in, not “I interested in”.
  2. Use I can + verb: “I can help”, not “I can to help”.
  3. Use because to give one clear reason.

Communication comes first. Correct these three points after your first speaking attempt.

Respond: Typical interview questions

Use short answers first. Then add one detail.

Interview question Short answer frame
Can you tell me about yourself? I am … and I am in Year 9. I like …
What are your interests? I am interested in …
What are you good at? I am good at … / I can …
Which school subjects do you like? I like … because …
Why do you want this internship? I would like to learn …
Can you give an example? Yes. For example, …

Rule: One clear answer + one useful detail is enough.

Ask: Keep the conversation going

At the end, ask one simple question.

  1. “What would I do during the internship?”
  2. “Who would I work with?”
  3. “What can I learn here?”
  4. “What time does the work day start?”

Do not ask for private information. Keep the question connected to the fictional internship.

Hint: Hilfestufen

Choose the support level you need.

Hilfe A – strong support

“Hello. My name is ____. I am in Year 9. I am interested in ____. I am good at ____. I like ____ because ____. I would like to learn ____. Thank you.”

Hilfe B – medium support

name → Year 9 → interests → skills → school subjects + reason → internship goal → question

Hilfe C – light support

Use only five key words. Speak freely around them.

Hilfe D – challenge

Add an example: “For example, in our school project, I …”

Improve: Feedback that helps

Give feedback on communication first.

Two stars and one next step:

  1. Star 1: One thing that was easy to understand.
  2. Star 2: One useful detail.
  3. Next step: One small change for the second try.

Useful feedback:

  1. “Your answer was clear.”
  2. “Your example helped me understand your skill.”
  3. “Add one reason with because.”
  4. “Speak a little more slowly.”
  5. “Ask one question at the end.”

Avoid comments about accents. Focus on whether the message is clear.

Fehleranalyse: Fix only what matters

Read the examples. Improve only the central problem.

First version Better version Why?
I interested in art. I am interested in art. Use am.
I can to work in a team. I can work in a team. After can, use the verb without to.
I like maths. It is good. I like maths because I enjoy solving problems. Give a clear reason.
My school subject English. My favourite school subject is English. Add the missing verb.

Your turn: Keep your original text. Make corrections in a second version. Do not erase your first ideas.

Use again: Audio-Modell 2

Ask two classmates or your teacher to read the roles. Listen once without reading.

Interviewer: “Hello. Thanks for coming. Can you tell me about yourself?”

Candidate: “Hello. My name is Leo. I am in Year 9. I am interested in bikes and technology. I am good at practical tasks and teamwork.”

Interviewer: “Which school subject do you like?”

Candidate: “I like science because I enjoy experiments.”

Interviewer: “Why do you want this internship?”

Candidate: “I would like to learn how a workshop team works.”

Candidate: “Can I ask a question? What kind of tasks would I do?”

Interviewer: “You would help with simple tasks and learn about the workshop.”

Second listening: Now read the script and mark:

  1. one interest
  2. one skill
  3. one school subject
  4. one reason
  5. one question

Role Cards: Fiktives Praktikumsgespräch

All profiles are fictional. Do not add real addresses, phone numbers or social-media accounts.

Role card Information
Candidate A – Mia Internship: media workshop. Interests: drawing, computers. Skills: patient, organised. School subjects: English, art. Goal: learn how a team plans a small project.
Candidate B – Leon Internship: bike workshop. Interests: bikes, technology. Skills: practical, reliable. School subjects: science, maths. Goal: learn simple workshop tasks.
Candidate C – Sara Internship: library. Interests: books, languages. Skills: friendly, careful. School subjects: English, German. Goal: learn how a library team works.
Candidate D – Ben Internship: community garden. Interests: nature, animals. Skills: teamwork, patient. School subjects: biology, PE. Goal: learn practical outdoor tasks.

Interviewer card:

  1. Start: “Hello. Thanks for coming.”
  2. Ask: “Can you tell me about yourself?”
  3. Ask one question about interests.
  4. Ask one question about skills.
  5. Ask one question about school subjects.
  6. Ask: “Why do you want this internship?”
  7. Give the candidate time to ask one question.
  8. Finish: “Thank you for your time.”

Speaking: Three-round practice

Round 1 – with full support: Use Hilfe A and one role card.

Round 2 – with key words: Use only five key words.

Round 3 – transfer: Change the internship or one interest. Keep the same speaking structure.

The interview should stay short. Do not memorise a long speech.

Viewing: Learn from another model

This video gives examples for the question “Tell me about yourself.” Some language is above G-level, so use only the simple parts that help you.

Viewing task:

  1. Listen for the question “Tell me about yourself.”
  2. Find one idea about what information is useful.
  3. Choose one phrase you could use.
  4. Ignore difficult details that you do not need.

Rule: You do not have to copy the speaker. Keep your own words.

Writing: Mini interview note

Write a short preparation note of about 60–80 words. It is not a full application letter.

Use this structure:

  1. Greeting and name
  2. Year 9
  3. one or two interests
  4. one or two skills
  5. one school subject with a reason
  6. one internship goal
  7. one question

Writing frame:

“Hello. My name is ____. I am in Year 9. I am interested in ____. I am good at ____. At school, I like ____ because ____. I would like to learn ____. My question is: ____?”

Check only three things first:

  1. Is every sentence understandable?
  2. Did you use can correctly?
  3. Did you give one reason with because?

Mediation: Explain the main idea

Your German-speaking classmate says:

“Im Praktikum soll ich drei Tage in einer Fahrradwerkstatt zuschauen und einfache Aufgaben kennenlernen. Ich arbeite mit einem kleinen Team. Ich soll pünktlich sein und nachfragen, wenn ich etwas nicht verstehe.”

A fictional English-speaking visitor asks what the internship is about.

Do not translate every word. Give the main information in simple English.

Possible start: “The internship is in a bike workshop. You work with a small team. You can learn simple tasks. It is important to be on time and ask questions.”

Safe and responsible use of AI and recordings

  1. Keep your own first version before using feedback.
  2. Check AI suggestions. AI can make mistakes.
  3. Check facts and sources if an AI gives you information.
  4. Do not enter private application data into external AI tools.
  5. Do not upload recordings unless you actively choose to do so and the school rules allow it.
  6. A private practice recording on your own device is enough.
  7. Use AI feedback as a suggestion, not as the final answer.
  8. Your own wording should remain visible.

Can-do-Check

Mark each statement with Yes, Almost or Not yet.

I can … Yes Almost Not yet
introduce myself in 45–60 seconds
name an interest
name a skill and give an example
talk about a school subject with because
answer one follow-up question
ask one interview question
improve my answer after feedback
