E9 G - Explain culture-specific information
E9 G - Explain culture-specific information
Mini-Beschreibung: You learn to explain culture-specific words and practices in short, clear English when one direct translation is not enough. Du arbeitest mit Bildern, kurzen Videos, einfachen Texten und Satzstartern. Keine Vollübersetzung: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.
Zielgruppe: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 9, Baden-Württemberg, G-Niveau.

Media start – Look, think, say: What can you see? What do you know? What needs more context? Use: I can see … / Maybe … / I am not sure what … means.
Viewing rule: First watch a short teacher-selected part without subtitles. Second watch with English subtitles. Use the transcript only after your first listening attempt.
I-can-Ziele
At the end, you can say:
- Explain a term: I can explain a culture-specific word in two or three simple sentences.
- Add context: I can say where, when and why something happens.
- Ask for help: I can ask a short question when I do not understand.
- Compare carefully: I can compare without saying that everybody is the same.
- Mediate: I can give the important meaning, not a word-for-word translation.
Vorwissen
Quick check: Which words can you already explain in English?
school assembly · prom · homecoming · bank holiday · Thanksgiving · Bonfire Night
Say one sentence. If you do not know the word, use: I know the word, but I need more context. or What does it mean here?

Think: school uniform is easy to translate. But the rules, colours and meaning can be different from school to school. A good cultural explanation gives context, not a stereotype.
The key idea
A direct translation can be too short. Use this simple pattern:
TERM → SIMPLE CATEGORY → CONTEXT → EXAMPLE
Example:
A school assembly is a meeting at school. Many or all students may come together. A school can use it for news, awards, talks or other activities. The exact form is different from school to school.
Good language: It is a … · It happens … · People may … · It is connected with … · For example … · It can be different in …
Avoid: All British people … / Americans always …
Better: Some people … / Many schools … / In this context … / It depends on …
Five useful culture terms
School assembly
School assembly = a school meeting. Many or all students may meet in one place. There may be news, music, awards, a talk or another school activity.
Say it: A school assembly is a meeting for students at school. It can be used for information or school activities.
Ask back: Is it for the whole school or only one year group?
Homecoming

Homecoming is a school or college tradition in the USA. It can include a sports game, a dance, a parade or other school activities. The exact form depends on the school.
Say it: Homecoming is a school celebration. Students and former students may come to school events.
Careful: Do not explain every US school with one fixed picture.
Prom

Prom is a formal school dance for older students in many US high schools. Similar events also exist in other places, but names and traditions can be different.
Say it: A prom is a formal school dance, often near the end of the school year.
Useful compare: It is a little like …, but …
Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a holiday in the USA and Canada, but it is on different dates. Many people use the day to give thanks and spend time with family or friends. Meals and traditions are not the same for everyone.
Listening 1: Listen for only three words you understand.
Listening 2: Listen again and choose the main idea: food · sport · giving thanks · school.
After listening: Use one sentence: In the video, Thanksgiving is connected with …
Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night is marked in parts of the UK on 5 November. It is connected with the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Events may include fireworks or bonfires.
Say it: Bonfire Night is an event on 5 November in the UK. It is connected with a historical event.
Do not stop at: Bonfire = Lagerfeuer. The cultural meaning needs more context.
Listening and Viewing
Task A – First view: Watch a short part without subtitles. Tick mentally: people · place · action · rule.
Task B – Second view: Use English subtitles. Write only three key words.
Task C – Respond: One useful thing to know is … because …
Task D – Ask: Does this happen everywhere in the UK? / Is this a rule or only advice?
Media check: A video can show one person's view. It does not prove that all people behave in the same way.
Claim check: Find one example in the video. Change a strong generalisation into careful language.
Example: British people do X. → Some people in Britain may do X.
Reading
Profile A – fictional

Read and answer in English:
- What is the culture-specific term?
- Where does it happen?
- What can happen there?
- Which word shows that it does not happen every Monday?
Profile B – fictional
I’m Jordan, 15, from the USA. Our school has homecoming in autumn. There is a football game and a dance. My cousin’s school has different activities.
Read and answer: Why is homecoming = Heimkehr not enough?
Help: Because the word also means … in this school context.

Mini-rule: Use may, can, some, many, often when a practice is not true for everybody.
Aussprache und Fluency
Goal: Be easy to understand. You do not need a perfect accent.
Chunk the sentence:
A school assembly / is a meeting at school / where many students / come together.
Practice slowly, then at normal speed.
Fluency frame: It is a … / It happens … / People may … / For example …
Repair phrases: Sorry, I mean … · Let me say that again. · The important point is …
Speaking
60-second culture explain: Choose one term: school assembly, prom, homecoming, Thanksgiving, Bonfire Night.

Partner question: When does it happen? · Who takes part? · Is it the same everywhere?
No recording is required. If you record yourself, keep the file private unless you clearly choose to share it.
Writing
Write a short message to an exchange student: 50–80 words.
Situation: Your partner reads the word school assembly or homecoming and asks what it means.
Structure: Hi …,
The word … means more than …
It is a …
People may …
For example …
Does that make sense?
Best, …
Accuracy focus: present simple, clear word order, because for one reason.
Mediation
Do not translate every word. Give the useful meaning.
German school notice:
Am Freitag ist Wandertag. Die Klasse trifft sich um 8 Uhr an der Schule. Wir gehen gemeinsam zu einem Ziel in der Umgebung und verbringen den Schultag draußen.
Your English-speaking exchange student asks: What is Wandertag?
Answer in 2–3 simple English sentences.
Hint 1: school day · class · walk/trip · outside
Hint 2: A Wandertag is a school day when …
Hint 3: It is not just the word “walking”. The class spends part of the school day outside together.
Functional grammar
You need only a few strong patterns:
Present simple: Homecoming includes school events.
can / may: It can include a dance. / Students may wear formal clothes.
because: A direct translation is not enough because the word has a special school context.
where: A prom is an event where students can dance.
Accuracy target: communication first. Check only:
- subject + verb
- one clear tense
- one clear connector
- useful context words
Hilfestufen
Level 1 – Key words: event · school · students · family · holiday · history · dance · meeting
Level 2 – Sentence starters: It is … / It happens … / People may … / It is connected with …
Level 3 – Model: Homecoming is a school tradition in the USA. It can include a sports game or a dance. The details are different from school to school.
Use only as much help as you need.
Feedback und Fehleranalyse
Give partner feedback with 2 + 1:
Two things were clear: … and …
One thing to improve: add the place / time / reason / example.
Error codes: C = context missing
W = unclear word
G = grammar blocks meaning
S = stereotype or overgeneralisation
Improve one sentence only. Then use it again in a new example.
Transfer
Explain one German culture-specific term in English. Choose:
Wandertag · Schullandheim · Abschlussfeier · Vereinsfest
Do not search for one perfect English word first. Start with:
It is a … → It happens … → People … → For example …
