E9 G - Connect ideas clearly

Mini-Beschreibung: Verbinde Gedanken mit häufigen words and clauses of reason, time, contrast und result. So werden kurze Texte klarer und leichter zu verstehen.

Level: Klasse 9, G-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg.

Learning route: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.

Einleitung

You already have ideas. Now connect them.

Short ideas: I missed the bus. I was late.

Connected idea: I was late because I missed the bus.

Use a few strong linking words well. Communication comes first. Accuracy focuses on a small number of useful patterns.

Deutsch hilft nur punktuell als Hinweis. Es gibt keine Vollübersetzung.

I-can-Ziele

  1. I can connect two ideas with because, so, but, although, when, before and after.
  2. I can show reason, result, contrast and time.
  3. I can ask for clarification when I do not understand.
  4. I can improve a short email, report or opinion text.
  5. I can speak in short connected sentences.
  6. I can check a few important sentence-building mistakes.

Vorwissen

Quick check. Finish the sentences in your head.

  1. I stayed inside because ...
  2. I was tired, so ...
  3. Although it was late, ...
  4. When I got home, ...

If this is difficult, use the hint table below.

Medien-Einstieg

Look at the picture. Make three sentences.

Try: It is raining, so ... She has an umbrella because ... Although it is raining, ...

Then ask a partner one question: What happens when it rains?

Input

Four useful connections

Meaning Useful words Example
reason because I stayed home because I was ill.
result so I was ill, so I stayed home.
contrast but, although Although I was tired, I finished the task.
time when, before, after I checked my bag before I left.

Remember: Choose the connection first. Then choose the word.

Functional grammar

because gives a reason.

I took the bus because it was raining.

so gives a result.

It was raining, so I took the bus.

although shows a contrast.

Although I was tired, I went to training.

when, before, after show time.

I called my friend when I got home.

Keep the sentence clear. One good connector is often enough.

Two important accuracy targets

  1. Do not mix the jobs of because and so. Reason: because. Result: so.
  2. Do not use although ... but in the same simple sentence pattern. Use one clear contrast connector.

Useful punctuation: Although it was late, we continued. When I got home, I called Sam.

Kontextwortschatz

Word Simple meaning Useful chunk
reason why something happens The reason is ...
result what happens next As a result ...
contrast two different ideas In contrast ...
plan something you want to do My plan is ...
change make something different change the time
reply answer a message reply to an email
clear easy to understand a clear message

Listening and Viewing

First listening: no transcript, no subtitles.

  1. Listen once. What is the topic: school, travel or linking ideas?
  2. Listen again. Write down any two words you hear: because, so, but, although.
  3. Pause after one useful sentence. Repeat it.
  4. Only now use captions or transcript support if you need it.
  5. Say one new sentence with the same connector.

Ask if needed: “Can you say that again?” / “What does that word mean here?”

Short viewing challenge

Watch a short part.

  1. Find one example with because.
  2. Find one example with so.
  3. Find one contrast example.
  4. Stop the video and create your own example.

Do not copy a full transcript. Use the video to notice patterns and then make your own sentence.

Reading

Maya’s project

Maya wants to join a school project after lessons. She likes the idea because she can work with friends. The project meets on Tuesday, but Maya also has football practice. When she gets home, she checks her timetable. She can move practice to Thursday, so she writes to the project leader. Although she is a little nervous, her message is clear. She explains her reason and asks one question. The leader replies quickly. Maya can join, so she feels relieved.

Understand:

  1. Why does Maya like the project?
  2. What is the problem on Tuesday?
  3. What does Maya do when she gets home?
  4. What is the result?

Respond: Which connector helps you most in the text? Give one reason.

Pronunciation and Fluency

Clear speech matters more than accent-free speech.

Read in sense groups:

Although I was tired, / I finished the task.

When I got home, / I checked my messages.

Keep a small pause between the two idea groups. Stress the key information, not every word.

Private practice: You may record yourself for your own practice. Recording is voluntary. Do not upload it unless your teacher has clearly asked for that and the task is safe and agreed.

Speaking

Use this pattern:

Idea → reason → question

“I want to join the project because it sounds useful. When does it start?”

Partner response:

“It starts at three, but we should arrive early.”

Then ask again:

“Why do we need to arrive early?”

Hint level 1: because / so / but / when

Hint level 2: I think ... because ... / It happens when ... / ..., so ...

Hint level 3: Start with two short sentences. Then connect them.

Writing

Write 70–90 words. Choose one task.

  1. Email: Write to a fictional school project leader. Explain why you want to join, mention one time problem and ask one question.
  2. Short report: Describe a school event. Use one reason, one result and one time link.
  3. Opinion: Is homework in a quiet place helpful? Give your opinion and two reasons.
  4. Job text: Write a short message about a fictional weekend job. Use invented names and invented contact details only.

Useful frame:

Hello ...,

I am writing because ...

I can ..., but ...

When ...

..., so ...

Could you tell me ...?

Best wishes, ...

Keep your first version. Improve it; do not replace it with somebody else’s complete text.

Improve your text

Check only these points first:

  1. Did I use at least three clear connectors?
  2. Does because introduce a reason?
  3. Does so introduce a result?
  4. Did I avoid although ... but?
  5. Can a reader follow the order of ideas?

Then improve one sentence and use the improved pattern again in a new sentence.

Mediation

Du bekommst diese kurze Information auf Deutsch:

“Die Schul-AG beginnt am Mittwoch um 14 Uhr. Bei starkem Regen findet sie drinnen statt. Treffpunkt ist am Haupteingang. Wer später kommt, soll kurz Bescheid sagen.”

Explain the important information to an English-speaking classmate.

Do not translate every word. Give the key message clearly. Use when, if, because or so where useful.

Possible start: “The club starts on Wednesday at two. When ...”

Feedback und Fehleranalyse

Use three steps:

  1. Meaning: Is the connection clear?
  2. Form: Is the connector correct?
  3. Next use: Can I use the pattern again?

Example:

Wrong: “I was tired because I went home.”

Possible intended meaning: “I was tired, so I went home.”

Why? Tiredness is the reason. Going home is the result.

Feedback sentence: “Your idea is clear. Check reason or result. Try the sentence again with because or so.”

Sichere Medien- und KI-Nutzung

Use fictional profiles and fictional application data in practice tasks. Do not share private social-media data.

Do not upload recordings, photos or texts without a clear task and permission. Private practice stays private.

If AI tools are allowed in a school task, check facts, sources and feedback. Keep your own first version and decide yourself which changes improve it. Do not enter private data. No external AI access is required for this course.

Transfer

Connect ideas in a new context.

Situation: Your bus is late. You have a group meeting at school.

Use: because for the reason, so for the result, although for contrast, when for time.

Make four connected sentences, then reduce them to two clear sentences.

Can-do-Check

Can I ...? Yes Almost Not yet
give a reason with because □ □ □
show a result with so □ □ □
show contrast with but or although □ □ □
connect events with when, before or after □ □ □
improve a short text with connectors □ □ □
ask for clarification in English □ □ □

Choose one “Almost” item. Practise it once more.

Folgekurs

Next step: E9 G - Build stronger paragraphs.

You will use the same connectors across a full paragraph with a topic sentence and supporting details.
