E9 G - Build topic vocabulary for English 9

Einleitung

Build words you can really use. In this aiMOOC you build active English vocabulary for seven useful topics: work, travel, media, environment, music, role models and current issues.

You do not learn long word lists. You meet words in a picture, a short text or audio, use them in a chunk, say or write something, get a hint, improve it and use it again.

Course routine: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.

The course is designed for English as a first foreign language, Klasse 9, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg. The focus is communication with frequent vocabulary and clear structures. This matches the G-level idea of using a simple topic vocabulary safely and understandably.

Media start: Look at the picture for 20 seconds. Do not translate everything. Say three words you know. Then make one sentence: I can see ... / They are ... / Maybe they ...

I-can-Ziele

At the end, you can say:

  1. I can understand important topic words in short texts, pictures and clear audio.
  2. I can respond with short connected sentences.
  3. I can ask a follow-up question when I need more information.
  4. I can use chunks such as I think ... because ..., I would like to ... and One problem is ....
  5. I can improve a short spoken or written answer after feedback.
  6. I can mediate the main idea of a short German message in simple English.
  7. I can check whether a new word, fact or AI suggestion really fits the context.

Vorwissen aktivieren

Choose one topic. In 60 seconds, write five English words you already know.

Then sort them:

  1. sure: I can use this word in a sentence.
  2. almost: I know the meaning but need help.
  3. new: I want to learn this word today.

Do not translate a complete text. Use pictures, examples and known words first.

Lernweg: understand → use again

Use the same six-step loop with every topic.

  1. Notice: Look or listen for the main idea.
  2. Understand: Find a word from context.
  3. Respond: Say one short answer.
  4. Ask: Add one question.
  5. Improve: Use one hint or correction.
  6. Use again: Put the word into a new situation.

Core vocabulary

Learn one topic at a time. The target is a small active vocabulary, not a long passive list.

Topic Core words Useful chunks
work job, skill, team, deadline apply for a job; work in a team
travel journey, ticket, luggage, delay book a ticket; miss a train
media post, source, headline, message check a source; share a post
environment waste, energy, climate, recycle save energy; reduce waste
music beat, lyrics, concert, playlist listen to music; play in a band
role models inspire, brave, support, goal look up to someone; make a difference
current issues change, problem, solution, fair One problem is ...; A possible solution is ...

Tip: Learn the whole chunk. save energy is more useful than learning save and energy separately.

Topic 1: Work

Picture task: Find or guess: team – job – skill. Then say: They work in a team. Add one detail.

Mini-context:

Sam wants a weekend job. Sam is good with people and likes working in a team. The job has clear tasks. Sometimes there is a deadline.

Use it:

  1. I am good at ...
  2. I can ...
  3. I would like to work as ...
  4. A useful skill is ... because ...

Fiction only: If you write an application profile, invent the name, address, phone number and company. Never use private application data.

Listening choice: Use only a short teacher-selected part first. First listen without transcript. Second listen: note two work words. Read the transcript only after your listening attempt.

Topic 2: Travel

Quick view: Point to something that can connect with journey, ticket, luggage or delay.

Mini-context:

Mia is travelling by train. She has one small bag and a ticket on her phone. The train is late, so she asks about the delay.

Ask and react:

  1. Where are you going?
  2. What time does it leave?
  3. Is there a delay?
  4. Could you help me, please?

Viewing task: Watch a short section. Write down only four useful travel words. Choose one and make your own sentence.

Topic 3: Media

Think before you share. A post can be interesting, but the source still matters.

Mini-context:

Leo sees a surprising headline. He does not share the post at once. First, he checks the source and looks for the same information somewhere else.

Useful language:

  1. The headline says ...
  2. The source is ...
  3. I am not sure if this is true.
  4. Let me check another source.

Viewing task: Listen for the main idea first. Then collect three words connected with social media. You do not need to understand every word.

Privacy rule: Use fictional posts and profiles. Do not copy private social-media data into tasks.

Topic 4: Environment

Image task: Which picture fits recycle? Which picture fits energy? Make one sentence for each picture.

Mini-context:

Our class wants to reduce waste. We use reusable bottles and switch off lights when we do not need them. Small actions can save energy.

Useful chunks:

  1. We can reduce waste by ...
  2. We should save energy because ...
  3. One small action is ...

Listening task: The video contains some harder words. Your G-level goal is smaller: understand the topic, catch two known words and one new useful word.

Topic 5: Music

Sound words: beat – lyrics – concert – playlist.

Mini-context:

Nora has a short playlist for the bus ride home. She likes songs with a strong beat. She sometimes reads the lyrics after listening.

Speak:

  1. I often listen to ...
  2. I like the beat because ...
  3. My playlist is good for ...
  4. I would like to go to a concert by ...

Listening task: Listen for music, song, playlist or another familiar word. Then explain one idea in one or two simple sentences.

Topic 6: Role models

A role model is a person whose actions or qualities can inspire other people. A role model can be famous or someone from everyday life.

Keep it factual: Describe what a person did and why that action matters to you. Do not guess private information.

Useful chunks:

  1. I look up to ... because ...
  2. This person worked for ...
  3. One important action was ...
  4. This inspires me to ...

Mini-task: Choose a real public person or a fictional person. Give three facts and one reason why the person is interesting to you. Check facts from reliable sources.

Topic 7: Current issues

A current issue is a topic people are discussing now. Examples can include artificial intelligence, climate, transport, media use or the cost of everyday life.

Language for a simple opinion:

  1. I think ...
  2. In my view ...
  3. One problem is ...
  4. A possible solution is ...
  5. I agree because ...
  6. I do not fully agree because ...

Fact-check rule: A current issue can change quickly. Check the date and source. If you use AI for ideas in a school-approved setting, check facts and keep your own original text. Do not send private data to an external AI service.

Listening and Viewing

First listen: no transcript. Your goal is the main idea, not every word.

Use this ladder:

  1. Try 1: What is the topic?
  2. Try 2: Catch three key words.
  3. Try 3: Answer one simple question.
  4. Hint: Use a picture, title or short word bank.
  5. Transcript: Read only after a real listening attempt.
  6. Use again: Say the main idea in one or two sentences.

Audio or video recordings of your own voice are voluntary. Keep them private or inside the school platform unless you have clearly agreed to another use. Do not upload recordings just because a task asks for speaking practice.

Reading

Read this short text once without a dictionary.

A small class project

Our class is planning a school event. One team writes media posts. Another team plans music. A third team thinks about waste and energy. We have one week, so we need a clear deadline. We also want the event to be fair and easy to join.

Reading strategy:

  1. Underline words you know.
  2. Circle one word you can guess.
  3. Find one chunk.
  4. Say the main idea in one sentence.

Check yourself: What does deadline probably mean here? What does team tell you about how the class works?

Kontextwortschatz

Do not ask What is the German word? first. Ask:

  1. What is happening?
  2. Is the word about a person, action, thing or idea?
  3. Which other words are near it?
  4. Can a picture help?
  5. Can I make a simple example?

Example: The train is 30 minutes late. There is a delay. The second sentence helps you understand delay.

Aussprache und Fluency

Your goal is being understood, not losing your accent.

Practise chunks as rhythm groups:

  1. work in a team
  2. book a ticket
  3. check a source
  4. reduce waste
  5. listen to music
  6. make a difference
  7. a possible solution

Fluency routine: Read once → look away → say it → add one detail.

If one word is difficult, listen to a trusted dictionary or teacher model. Repeat slowly, then in the whole chunk. Clear stress and understandable rhythm are more important than perfect imitation.

Speaking

Mini-dialogue

A: What topic are you interested in? B: I am interested in music. A: Why? B: Because I like live concerts. A: What kind of music do you like? B: I like ...

Now change the topic. Use work, travel, media, environment, role models or a current issue.

Speaking target: respond → ask back → give one reason.

Writing

Write 60–90 words. Choose one format:

  1. a short structured email about a travel problem
  2. a short report about a class environment action
  3. a short opinion text about media use
  4. a fictional mini-application for a weekend job

Use this frame:

Start: I am writing about ... Point 1: First, ... Reason: This is important because ... Point 2: Also, ... End: In my view, ... / Best wishes, ...

Keep your first version. Improve a copy instead of replacing your own text completely.

Mediation

Situation: A German school notice says:

Für das Schulfest sollen alle Klassen Müll vermeiden. Bringt möglichst wiederverwendbare Trinkflaschen mit. Am Ende werden Papier, Restmüll und Verpackungen getrennt.

Your English-speaking guest does not need a word-for-word translation.

Say the important message in simple English.

Possible frame: For the school event, we should ... We should bring ... At the end, we ...

Mediation means passing on the important meaning, not translating every word.

Funktionale Grammatik

Use grammar to communicate. Focus on only a few central patterns.

Function Pattern Example
Give a reason statement + because + reason I like this job because I enjoy teamwork.
Give advice should + base verb We should check the source.
Talk about ability can + base verb I can work in a team.
Ask politely Could you + base verb Could you help me?

Accuracy focus: Check the verb, basic word order and the word after can/should. Communication comes first.

Hilfestufen

Use only as much help as you need.

  1. Hint 1 – picture: Look again and name what you see.
  2. Hint 2 – word bank: Choose from four core words.
  3. Hint 3 – chunk: Start with I think ..., I can ... or One problem is ....
  4. Hint 4 – model: Read one short model sentence.
  5. Hint 5 – improve: Change one word and add one reason.

Feedback und Fehleranalyse

Use two strengths + one next step.

Example: Your message is clear. You used the chunk "check a source" well. Next step: add one reason.

When something is wrong, first find the type:

  1. word choice: Does the word fit this context?
  2. verb: Is a verb missing?
  3. word order: Is the sentence easy to follow?
  4. pronunciation: Which word was hard to understand?

Correct only what helps communication most. Then use the improved chunk in a new sentence.

Transfer: mix the topics

Real communication often mixes topics.

Challenge: Choose two topics and connect them.

Examples: Travel can affect the environment. Music is shared through media. A role model can speak about a current issue. Work skills can help with a school project.

Now make one new connection of your own and explain it with because.
