E8 M - Follow discussion and disagreement

Mini-Beschreibung: Follow a short discussion with different positions. Recognise agreement, disagreement and reasons. Then join in with your own clear, polite opinion.

Level: Klasse 8, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg, M-Niveau.

Sprachmodus: English first → context → try → ask → hint → German help if needed. Keine Vollübersetzung.

Medien-Einstieg

Look first. Don't translate.

What may the students be discussing? Who seems to be listening? Who may agree or disagree?

Try: Say two short sentences:

  1. I think they are discussing ...
  2. Maybe one student disagrees because ...

Hint: Watch faces, hands and eye contact.

Deutsch-Hilfe: to agree = zustimmen, to disagree = widersprechen, reason = Grund.

I can ...

After this aiMOOC, you can say:

  1. I can follow the main points in a short informal discussion.
  2. I can notice agreement, disagreement and reasons.
  3. I can ask for a reason or clarification.
  4. I can disagree politely and explain why.
  5. I can report what another person said or asked.
  6. I can use the passive in a short school-related statement.
  7. I can check whether my English is understandable and accurate.

Vorwissen aktivieren

Quick choice: Which phrases do you already know?

  1. I agree.
  2. Exactly.
  3. I'm not sure about that.
  4. I see your point, but ...
  5. Why do you think that?
  6. That's a good point.

Try first: Sort them in your head into agreement, disagreement and asking for reasons.

Hint: A phrase can sound polite even when the speaker says no.

Listening and Viewing 1

First watch: main idea only. Do not stop after every sentence.

Task A – first viewing: What is the main purpose of the conversation?

A: The speakers are trying to win an argument.
B: The speakers compare ideas and react to each other.
C: The speakers tell a story about the past.

Task B – second viewing: Listen for three kinds of language:

  1. agreement
  2. disagreement
  3. reasons or explanations

Try: Write down only keywords, not full sentences.

Ask yourself: Did the speaker reject the person or only the idea?

Hint: Listen for phrases such as I see what you mean, I'm not so sure and I think you're right.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Achte auf Signalwörter und Tonfall. Du musst nicht jedes Wort verstehen.

Reading: A school-festival discussion

Context: Four fictional students are planning one activity for the school festival. No real profiles or private data are used.

Mia: We need one activity that lots of students can join. I think a quiz challenge would work best because it is cheap and easy to organise.

Jay: I see your point, but a photo booth would be more fun. People could take a picture with their friends and keep it as a memory.

Leila: I'm not completely convinced. A photo booth can be fun, but not everyone wants to be photographed. We would need a clear choice.

Noah: That's true. What if we make a small photo corner and a quiz? Then students can choose.

Mia: Maybe, but we only have forty minutes to set everything up. Two activities might be too much.

Jay: Fair point. Still, the photo corner doesn't need much equipment. A background can be made from cardboard, and the photos can be taken on the school tablet.

Leila: Only if nothing is uploaded. The pictures should stay private and should be deleted after they are printed.

Noah: I agree with that. The rules can be explained at the start.

Mia: Okay, I'm changing my mind a little. I still prefer the quiz, but I could support a simple photo corner too.

Jay: Great. So we agree on a quiz as the main activity and an optional photo corner?

Leila: Yes, as long as students choose freely and no pictures are shared online.

Noah: Then we've got a compromise.

Try first: Who changes their position? Who gives a privacy reason? Who suggests the compromise?

Hint: Follow the movement of the discussion, not single words.

Deutsch-Hilfe: as long as = sofern; optional = freiwillig; compromise = Kompromiss.

Follow the discussion

Speaker Position Reaction Reason
Mia prefers the quiz partly changes her mind cheap, easy, limited set-up time
Jay likes the photo booth accepts limits fun, memorable, little equipment
Leila is cautious partly agrees choice and privacy matter
Noah combines ideas seeks common ground both activities may work

Key skill: You do not need every word. Track three things: position → reaction → reason.

Kontextwortschatz

Function Useful English Short help
Agree I agree. / Exactly. / That's a good point. Zustimmung
Partly agree I see your point, but ... / That's true, but ... teilweise zustimmen
Disagree I'm not sure about that. / I don't think so. höflich widersprechen
Give a reason because ... / The main reason is ... begründen
Ask for a reason Why do you think that? / What makes you say that? nachfragen
Compromise What if we ...? / Could we combine both ideas? Lösung suchen

Mini-try: Complete orally: I see your point, but ... because ...

Aussprache und Verständlichkeit

Goal: Be easy to understand. Accent-free English is not the target.

Say these chunks as groups, not word by word:

  1. I SEE your point, but ...
  2. I'm NOT so sure about that.
  3. That's a GOOD point.
  4. WHY do you think that?
  5. The MAIN reason is ...

Try: Tap the stressed word with your finger while speaking.

Hint: Stress the important meaning words. Small words can be shorter.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Verständlichkeit vor Akzentfreiheit. Sprich in Sinnabschnitten.

Listening and Viewing 2

Listen for tone and politeness.

Viewing task: Find one direct way and one softer way to disagree.

Try: Which sounds better in a class discussion? Explain in one English sentence.

Hint: Tone of voice changes how direct language feels.

Speaking: join the discussion

Situation: Your class can add one new activity to a project day.

Choose one:

  1. a sports challenge
  2. a creative workshop
  3. a mini game tournament

Speak for about 60–90 seconds with a partner.

Use this route:

Position → reaction → reason → question → compromise

Example frame:

I think ... would be useful because ...
I see your point, but ...
What makes you say that?
Could we combine both ideas?

Challenge: Use at least one partial agreement before you disagree.

Recording: Recording is optional. Keep recordings private. Do not upload them unless your teacher has explicitly organised a safe school system and you choose to take part.

Reading strategy: signal words

In a discussion, small words show direction.

Signal What it often tells you
because a reason follows
but a contrast or disagreement follows
so a result or conclusion follows
still the speaker keeps part of an earlier position
as long as a condition follows
then a next step or conclusion follows

Try: Read only the sentences around but, because and as long as in the festival discussion. Can you still follow the main disagreement?

Functional grammar

Passive: useful in school discussions

At M-level, use the passive when the action or rule matters more than the person.

Active: Students take the photos on the school tablet.
Passive: The photos are taken on the school tablet.

Active: We explain the rules at the start.
Passive: The rules are explained at the start.

Try: Change this sentence: We delete the pictures after printing.

Answer check: The pictures are deleted after printing.

Error watch: Do not forget be + past participle.

Reported speech: backshift, questions and commands

Use reported speech to tell someone what was said.

Statement: Mia said, "The quiz is cheaper." → Mia said that the quiz was cheaper.

Question: Jay asked, "Do we need a photo booth?" → Jay asked whether they needed a photo booth.

Command: Leila said, "Don't upload the pictures." → Leila told them not to upload the pictures.

Try: Report Noah's question: "Could we combine both ideas?"

Possible answer: Noah asked whether they could combine both ideas.

Hint: In reported questions, do not use question word order.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Indirekte Rede: Aussage zurückversetzen; Frage ohne Fragewortstellung; Aufforderung oft mit told + object + to.

Writing

Write a short discussion summary of about 90–120 words.

Include:

  1. the topic
  2. two different positions
  3. at least two reasons
  4. one moment of agreement or partial agreement
  5. the final compromise or result

Use at least:

  1. one passive sentence
  2. one reported statement or question

Start if needed: The group discussed ... Mia said that ... Jay disagreed because ... In the end ...

Do not copy the full model. Use it only as support.

Mediation

Your German-speaking partner says:

Ich finde die Fotoecke okay, aber nur freiwillig. Niemand sollte Bilder hochladen müssen.

Explain the key idea in English to a fictional exchange student. Do not translate word for word.

Try: She thinks ... but ...

Hint: Keep the meaning, not the German sentence structure.

Possible version: She is fine with the photo corner if it is optional, and she says nobody should have to upload pictures.

Gestufte Hilfen

Level 1 – Try: Speak or write without help for 30 seconds.

Level 2 – Ask: What is your position? What is your reason? What did the other person say?

Level 3 – Hint: Use: I agree because ... / I see your point, but ... / What if we ...?

Level 4 – German help: Erst Position erkennen, dann Reaktion, dann Grund. Nutze kurze englische Bausteine statt vollständiger Übersetzung.

Direktes Feedback

After speaking or writing, check:

Check Yes / Not yet
I made my position clear.
I reacted to another idea.
I gave a reason.
I stayed polite when disagreeing.
My English was understandable.
I checked one grammar point.

Feedback sentence: Your reason is clear. Next, add one phrase that reacts directly to the other speaker.

Fehleranalyse

Find and improve the problem.

  1. I am agree with Mia. → I agree with Mia.
  2. I don't agree because is too expensive. → I don't agree because it is too expensive.
  3. She asked did we need two activities. → She asked whether we needed two activities.
  4. The rules explained at the start. → The rules are explained at the start.
  5. He said that the photo booth is better. → In a past report: He said that the photo booth was better.

Try: Explain which error is about vocabulary, sentence structure or grammar.

KI sinnvoll nutzen

AI can help you check a draft, but it should not replace your own speaking or writing.

  1. Write your own first version.
  2. Ask for one specific check, for example: Are my reasons clear?
  3. Check AI suggestions for level, facts and grammar.
  4. Keep only changes you understand.
  5. Never enter private social-media data, real personal profiles or confidential recordings.
  6. Do not upload recordings or personal files to external AI services without explicit school permission and your own informed choice.

Transfer

New situation: Your class is choosing between a digital poster and a short live presentation for an English project.

Work in groups of three or four.

Round 1: Each person gives one position and one reason.
Round 2: React to another speaker.
Round 3: Ask one follow-up question.
Round 4: Find a compromise.

M-level challenge: At the end, one student reports the group's discussion using reported speech.

Can-do-Check

Rate yourself: Yes / Mostly / Not yet.

  1. I can follow who agrees and who disagrees.
  2. I can identify at least one reason for each position.
  3. I can use a polite disagreement phrase.
  4. I can ask a follow-up question.
  5. I can explain a compromise.
  6. I can form a passive sentence.
  7. I can report a statement, question or command.
  8. I can improve one error after feedback.

Next step: If you chose Not yet twice or more, repeat Listening 1 with keywords only and use the Level 3 hints.

Folgekurs

Continue with E8 M - Take part in a discussion.

Focus next on longer turns, stronger reasons, follow-up questions and a short group presentation.
