E8 G - Understand a simple job profile
E8 G - Understand a simple job profile
Mini-Beschreibung: Understand a short fictional job profile with tasks, workplace, working times and skills. This aiMOOC is for English as a first foreign language, Class 8, G level, Baden-Württemberg.

Look first. What place can you see? What jobs could people do there? Say two English words before you read on.
Your learning route
English first → context → try → ask → hint → German help if needed.
Do not translate every sentence. First use the picture, headings and words you know. Then try the task. Ask for a hint if you need one. German help is short and only supports understanding.
I can ...
| I can ... | My goal |
|---|---|
| find the main information in a short job profile | tasks, workplace, working times, skills |
| understand connected sentences about a familiar job | even if I do not know every word |
| talk about a job in several connected sentences | and give one reason for my opinion |
| write a short job text or email with a clear structure | using a simple writing frame |
Before you start
Think – pair – share.
What job words do you already know? Choose one familiar job and say:
A ... works in / at ... . A ... has to ... . A ... needs to be ... .
If this is difficult, use one of these words: shop – school – office – hospital – library – kitchen.
Media warm-up: A workplace

Look at the picture for 20 seconds.
- Workplace clue: Name three things you can see in English.
- Task clue: What could a worker do here?
- Skill clue: Which skill could be useful here: friendly, careful, creative, strong?
Quick feedback: More than one answer is possible. Your answer is good if it fits the picture and you can give a reason.
Reading: A simple job profile
The profile below is fictional. It is made for language learning. Real jobs can be different from workplace to workplace.
| Job profile | Green Street Library Assistant |
|---|---|
| Workplace | Green Street Library, a small public library |
| Working times | Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; sometimes Saturday morning |
| Tasks | put returned books back on the shelves; help visitors find books; check books in and out; keep tables tidy |
| Skills | be friendly, organised and careful; use a computer; speak clearly to visitors |
Sam works as a library assistant at Green Street Library. The library is usually quiet, but it can be busy after school. Sam helps visitors find books and uses a computer at the front desk. Returned books have to go back to the correct shelves. Sam also checks books in and out and keeps the reading tables tidy. The normal working time is from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On some weeks, Sam works on Saturday morning. Sam likes the job because helping people is useful.

First reading: Get the main idea
Read once. Do not stop at every new word.
| Question | Your short answer |
|---|---|
| Where does Sam work? | ... |
| Name two tasks. | ... |
| When does Sam normally work? | ... |
| Name two useful skills. | ... |
Check after you try: Sam works in a public library. Possible tasks: help visitors, use the front desk computer, put books back, check books in and out, keep tables tidy. Normal time: 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Possible skills: friendly, organised, careful, computer skills, clear speaking.
Reading strategy
You do not need every word. Look for four information blocks:
| Question word | Information |
|---|---|
| What? | tasks |
| Where? | workplace |
| When? | working times |
| How / what kind of person? | skills |
German help: job profile = kurzes Berufsprofil; task = Aufgabe; workplace = Arbeitsplatz; skill = Fähigkeit.
Context vocabulary
Learn words in context, not as a long translation list.
| English | Simple English meaning | Small German help |
|---|---|---|
| shelf | a place where you put books | Regal |
| returned book | a book that comes back to the library | zurückgegebenes Buch |
| visitor | a person who comes to a place | Besucher/in |
| tidy | clean and in good order | ordentlich |
| careful | working without many mistakes | sorgfältig |
| organised | planning and keeping things in order | organisiert |
| front desk | the main service desk | Ausleihtheke / Empfang |
| working time | the time when a person works | Arbeitszeit |

Try it: Cover the German help. Explain shelf, visitor, tidy with very simple English or a gesture.
Pronunciation
Clarity is more important than sounding like a native speaker.
| Word | Focus | Try |
|---|---|---|
| library | stress the first syllable | Say it slowly, then naturally. |
| assistant | stress the second syllable | Clap the stressed syllable. |
| organised | keep the middle clear | Say it in a short sentence. |
| careful | two clear parts | Say: Be careful with the books. |
Private practice: You may record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless you actively choose to share them. No upload is needed.
Listening and Viewing
The video is about talking about jobs in English. Use only a short section first.
First viewing: Watch about the first 2–3 minutes. Do not use subtitles at first. Listen for the topic and familiar words.
- Listening focus 1: What kind of information do people give when they talk about a job?
- Listening focus 2: Listen for words about workplace or company.
- Listening focus 3: Listen again and write down two useful phrases.
Hint: Pause and replay. You do not have to understand every sentence.
German help if needed: Konzentriere Dich auf Schlüsselwörter und die vier Bereiche: task, workplace, time, skill.
Mini-listening with transcript later
Ask a teacher or partner to read the following text aloud at a moderate speed. Do not look at the transcript during the first listening.
Listening questions: Where does Alex work? What are two tasks? What time does Alex start? Which skill is important?
Transcript – open only after your first listening:
Hi, I’m Alex. I work in a small sports shop. I start at nine o’clock. I put new products on the shelves and help customers find the right size. I also use the computer at the desk. I need to be friendly and careful. I like the job because I meet different people.
Direct feedback: workplace = sports shop; tasks = put products on shelves, help customers, use the computer; start = nine o’clock; skills = friendly and careful.
Second media challenge
Watch a short part. Find one sentence about a typical workday and one sentence about a skill or feeling. You may use subtitles on the second viewing.
Functional grammar for this job profile
Use grammar to understand and communicate. Do not learn forms without context.
Present simple: routines and facts
Sam helps visitors. Sam works from nine to five.
Use the present simple for normal tasks and working times.
Try: Write two sentences about the library job.
Hint: Sam + verb with -s: Sam helps ... / Sam works ...
can and have to: skills and duties
Sam can use a computer. Sam has to put books back on the correct shelves.
can can show an ability. have to can show that something is necessary.
Try: Say one skill with can and one duty with has to.
Reported speech without backshift
At G level, keep it simple:
The manager says, “Sam starts at nine.” → The manager says that Sam starts at nine.
The tense stays the same here because says is present.
Try: The manager says, “Sam helps visitors.” → The manager says that ...
Check: The manager says that Sam helps visitors.
Receptive grammar only: passive and past perfect
You only need to understand these forms here. You do not have to produce them.
Passive: Books are checked in at the front desk. Meaning: The sentence focuses on the books and the action.
Past perfect: Before the library opened, Sam had prepared the return desk. Meaning: preparing happened first; opening happened later.
Mini-check: Which happened first in the second sentence?
Answer: Sam prepared the return desk first.
Speaking
Use connected statements, not single words.
Speaking frame:
The job is ... . The person works ... . The main tasks are ... and ... . The person needs to be ... . I think the job is ... because ... .
Partner task: Speak for about 30–45 seconds about the fictional library job. Your partner listens for the four key areas.
| Partner check | Yes / Not yet |
|---|---|
| workplace included | ... |
| two tasks included | ... |
| working time included | ... |
| one skill included | ... |
| opinion with because included | ... |
Feedback rule: First say one thing that was clear. Then give one small language tip.
Writing
Write a short job text of about 70–90 words. Choose a fictional job: café helper, bike shop assistant, animal shelter helper, school office assistant or library assistant.
Writing frame:
| Part | Useful language |
|---|---|
| Start | This job is ... / The person works ... |
| Tasks | The main tasks are ... / The person also ... |
| Time | The normal working time is ... |
| Skills | The person needs to be ... and ... |
| Opinion | I think this job is ... because ... |
Use your own text. A tool may help you check language only if your school allows it. Do not let AI replace your own writing. Check whether suggestions fit your level and whether the facts still match your fictional profile. No external AI access is needed for this course.
Short email option
Write a short email to a classmate about the job.
Hi ... , I read a job profile about ... . The person works ... . Two main tasks are ... . The working time is ... . I think the job is ... because ... . Best, ...
You may change the frame. Do not add private contact data.
Mediation
Your German-speaking classmate asks: “Was muss ich über diesen Job wissen?”
Explain the key information in German in three or four short sentences. Do not translate the whole English profile. Give only the important points: workplace, tasks, time and skills.
Goal: transfer meaning, not every word.
Error analysis and direct feedback
| Common problem | Check | Better example |
|---|---|---|
| Sam work in a library. | Third person -s? | Sam works in a library. |
| Sam can to use a computer. | After can: base verb. | Sam can use a computer. |
| The tasks is help visitors. | Match singular/plural and use a clear structure. | The tasks are helping visitors and checking books. |
| Sam works in nine o’clock. | Time needs at. | Sam starts at nine o’clock. |
| I think the job is good. | Add a reason. | I think the job is useful because Sam helps people. |
Fix one thing at a time. First check meaning. Then check the verb. Then check small words such as at, in, on.
Transfer: A new job profile
Read this new fictional profile.
Bike Shop Assistant
Taylor works in a small bike shop. The normal working time is 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Taylor puts products on shelves, answers simple customer questions and keeps the shop tidy. Taylor can use a tablet at the service desk and has to work carefully. On Fridays, the shop is often busy. Taylor likes the job because bikes are interesting.

Transfer task: Compare the bike shop job with the library job. Say one similarity and one difference.
Model: Both jobs need careful work. In the library, Sam works with books, but Taylor works with bike products.
