E8 G - The USA – Regions and landscapes

Mini-Beschreibung: In this aiMOOC you use maps, photos and short English texts to explore selected regions and landscapes of the USA. You practise geographical orientation and simple connected English. The course is for Klasse 8, G-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg.

Look first – no dictionary yet. What can you already see on the map? Find the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Northeast, the South, the Midwest and the West. Point to one region you know.

I can …

Am Ende kann ich … Ziel
orientate I can find important US regions and landscapes on a map.
describe I can describe a landscape with connected sentences.
compare I can compare two US regions and give a reason for my opinion.
understand I can understand the main ideas in short texts and clear videos.
write I can write a short travel or geography text with a clear structure.

Before you start: What do you know?

Look at the pictures. Do not read the explanations first.

Try: Say two sentences in English.

  1. Sentence 1: I think picture … is in the …
  2. Sentence 2: I can see …

Ask: Which words are missing?

Hint: Use: mountains – grassland – wetland – canyon – dry – green – high – flat.

Deutsch-Hilfe nur wenn nötig: wetland = Feuchtgebiet, grassland = Grasland, canyon = tiefe Schlucht.

Orientation: one country, many landscapes

The USA is very large. The 48 connected states stretch from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. Alaska lies in the northwest of North America. Hawaii is an island group in the Pacific.

The landscape changes a lot. In the east you can find the Appalachian Mountains. In the centre there are wide plains and prairie areas. Farther west, the Rocky Mountains rise high above the plains. The Southwest has dry plateaus, deserts and famous canyons. Florida has subtropical wetlands such as the Everglades.

Map task: Move from east to west with your finger. Say: First …, then …, after that …, finally …

Region 1: The Northeast and the Appalachians

Datei:Blue Ridge Mountains.JPG

The Northeast has large cities, forests, hills and mountain areas. The Appalachians are older and usually lower than the Rocky Mountains. Parts of the Blue Ridge are covered by forests. The Atlantic coast is nearby.

Short reading: Maya is a fictional student travelling with her class. She writes: “The Blue Ridge Mountains look soft and green from far away. The landscape is not flat. We can see long forested ridges.”

Try: What three landscape words can you find?

Hint: green – forested – ridges.

Context link: The Northeast is not only mountains and forests. It also includes very large urban areas such as New York City. A region can have different landscapes and settlement patterns.

Region 2: The Great Plains

Datei:Tallgrass Prairie P5300398.JPG

The Great Plains lie east of the Rocky Mountains. Much of the area is open land with grasslands and farmland. Parts of the plains are very wide, but they are not all completely flat. The land generally becomes higher towards the west.

Picture task: Complete orally: The land looks … . In the foreground, I can see … . In the distance, … .

Useful words: wide – open – grassy – farmland – horizon – gently rolling.

Region 3: The Rocky Mountains

Datei:RockyMountainsNationalPark.jpg

The Rocky Mountains form a major mountain system in western North America. In the USA they cross several western states. High peaks, steep slopes, valleys, lakes and forests shape many Rocky Mountain landscapes.

Compare: The Rockies are … than the Appalachians. Both regions have … . One difference is … .

Language help: Use comparative forms you already know: higher, steeper, drier, greener.

Region 4: The Southwest and the Grand Canyon

The Southwest includes dry areas, plateaus and desert landscapes. The Grand Canyon in Arizona was cut by the Colorado River over a very long time. Rock layers can be seen in the canyon walls.

Fehler beim Erstellen des Vorschaubildes:

Monument Valley lies on the Arizona–Utah border in the Navajo Nation. Its sandstone buttes are striking landforms of the Colorado Plateau. The landscape is culturally important and should not be reduced to movie images or “Wild West” clichés.

Think: A landscape can be a natural place, a home, a cultural space and a tourist destination at the same time.

Region 5: Florida and the Everglades

Datei:Everglades National Park EVER1646.jpg

The Everglades are a large wetland system in southern Florida. Water, sawgrass marshes, mangroves and many animal species are important parts of the ecosystem. The area is very different from the dry Southwest.

Quick contrast: The Southwest is often dry, whereas the Everglades are … . In both places, water is important because … .

Listening and Viewing

Rule: first watch and listen – then use help. Do not open subtitles immediately. Try to catch places, landscape words and the main idea first.

Viewing 1 – main idea: Which regions or landscapes do you recognise? Write only three keywords.

Viewing 2 – details: Listen for words about landforms, climate or travel.

Ask: Compare your keywords with a partner.

Hint 1: Look at the maps and images in this course while you watch.

Hint 2: Turn on English subtitles only after your first listening attempt.

German help if needed: Konzentriere Dich zuerst auf Ortsnamen und Bildinformationen. Du musst nicht jedes Wort verstehen.

Viewing focus: The Grand Canyon

Before watching: Predict: Is the focus mainly on geography, history, wildlife or city life?

After the first viewing: Choose two facts you understood.

After the second viewing: Explain in one or two English sentences why the Grand Canyon became an important protected place.

Support: The video shows … . I learned that … .

Reading: A short coast-to-coast journey

Read once without stopping. Then read again with the word box.

Jordan is a fictional 14-year-old student. During a school project, Jordan follows a route across the USA on a digital map. The route starts near the Atlantic coast. Then it crosses the Appalachian region and the wide interior plains. Farther west, the land becomes higher near the Rocky Mountains. In the Southwest, the map shows dry plateaus and deep canyons. Finally, the route reaches the Pacific coast.

Jordan says that the landscapes are shaped by water, rock, climate and time. Before the class had studied the map, Jordan had thought that most of the USA looked similar. Now Jordan can explain why this idea was wrong.

Task 1: Put these landscapes in the order of Jordan’s journey: Rocky Mountains – Atlantic coast – Southwest – interior plains – Appalachians – Pacific coast.

Task 2: Which sentence shows that Jordan changed an earlier idea?

Task 3: What shapes landscapes according to the text?

Context vocabulary

English Simple English meaning Mini example
coast land next to the sea The Atlantic coast is in the east.
plain a large area of mostly low land The Great Plains are very wide.
ridge a long narrow high area Forest covers the ridge.
wetland land with a lot of water The Everglades are wetlands.
plateau high land with a broad surface The Colorado Plateau is in the West.
canyon a deep valley with steep sides The Grand Canyon is very deep.
border line between areas Monument Valley is near a state border.
landscape the visible features of an area The landscape is dry and rocky.

Vocabulary strategy: First use the photo and sentence. Then guess. Check the word box only after your first try.

Pronunciation: clear is more important than perfect

Say the words slowly, then in a sentence.

Word Stress help Practice
prairie PRAI-rie The prairie is wide.
canyon CAN-yon We can see a canyon.
region RE-gion This region is dry.
mountain MOUN-tain The mountain is high.

Goal: Be understandable. You do not need to copy one “perfect” accent.

Speaking

Photo talk: 30–45 seconds

Choose one picture from this course.

Step 1 – context: This picture shows … in the USA.

Step 2 – details: Describe the foreground and background.

Step 3 – link: Say which region it could be in and give a reason.

Step 4 – opinion: I would / would not like to visit this place because …

Less support: Try to connect ideas with and, but, because, whereas, so.

More support: Use the frame: I can see … . The landscape is … . I think it is in … because … .

Recording: A voice recording is optional. Keep it private unless your teacher gives a safe school procedure. Do not upload recordings without being asked.

Pair task: Guess my region

Student A describes one region without saying its name. Student B guesses and gives evidence.

Example: It is in the southeast. There is a lot of water and wetland. I think it is …

Feedback: A good answer has a region, one landscape feature and one reason.

Writing

Short travel message

Write 70–100 words to a fictional exchange partner. Choose one US region.

Your text should include:

  1. where the region is
  2. what the landscape looks like
  3. one comparison with another region
  4. one activity you could do there
  5. your opinion with a reason

Planning frame: Hi …, I am learning about … . It is in … . The landscape is … . Compared with …, it is … . I would like to … because … .

Challenge: Remove two sentence starters and connect your ideas independently.

Mini-report

Write 80–110 words with the title Two different US landscapes. Use two photos from this page as evidence.

Structure: Introduction → Landscape A → Landscape B → Comparison → short conclusion

Mediation

A German-speaking visitor asks: Wir möchten eine Landschaft mit viel Wasser sehen, aber keine Großstadt. Welche der Regionen aus dem Kurs passt und warum?

Answer in simple English in 2–4 sentences. Do not translate every word. Give the useful information only.

Hint: Think about the Everglades.

Grammar in context

At G level, some forms are mainly for recognising meaning. You do not have to force them into your own text.

Form Example from geography What should you understand?
passive The landscape is shaped by water and wind. The focus is on the landscape, not on who does the action.
past perfect Jordan had thought the USA looked similar before the map lesson. One past idea happened before another past moment.
reported speech without backshift Jordan says that the Rockies are in the West. You report information that is still true.

Try: Underline the important meaning, not the grammar label.

Do not force production: You may use simpler active sentences in your own speaking and writing.

Feedback and error analysis

Read the learner sentence: The Great Plains is mountains and it are in Florida.

Find two problems.

Hint 1: Check the map.

Hint 2: Check singular/plural agreement.

Better version: The Great Plains are wide plains in the central part of the USA.

Error strategy: Ask yourself:

  1. Is my geography fact correct?
  2. Does my verb match the subject?
  3. Did I give evidence from the map or photo?
  4. Can I connect two ideas with because, but or whereas?

AI and source check

If you use AI for a school task, use it as a helper, not as a replacement for your own text.

  1. Check the level: Is the English really suitable for your class?
  2. Check facts: Compare place names and geography with the map or a reliable source.
  3. Check feedback: An AI suggestion can be wrong.
  4. Keep your own work: Do not let a tool replace your own speaking or writing.
  5. Protect data: Do not send private recordings, names or personal social-media data to external AI tools.

Can-do check

I can … yes almost not yet
