E8 G - Start a graded reader independently

Einleitung

Mini-Beschreibung: Beginne eine levelgerechte englische Lektüre selbstständiger als in E7. Du arbeitest mit einem einfachen reading plan, character cards, audio support und vocabulary help. Dieser aiMOOC hilft Dir beim Lesen – er ersetzt nicht Deine Originallektüre.

English first: context → try → ask → hint → German help if needed.

Media start: What is extensive reading?

Sieh zuerst nur den Anfang des Videos. Notiere danach auf Englisch zwei Wörter, die Du verstanden hast. Schau erst dann weiter.

Try: Complete the sentence: Reading a graded reader can help me because ...

I can ...

  1. I can choose a graded reader that is not too difficult.
  2. I can plan short reading sessions and keep going.
  3. I can understand the main idea without knowing every word.
  4. I can use context before I use a vocabulary help.
  5. I can make simple character cards with evidence from the text.
  6. I can use audio after a first reading or listening attempt.
  7. I can give an opinion and add a reason.
  8. I can ask for help in steps instead of asking for a full translation.

Vorwissen: Your reading habits

Answer in short English sentences.

Question Your note
What do you like reading? I like ...
When can you read for ten minutes? I can read ...
What makes an English text difficult? ... is difficult for me.
What helps you most? Pictures / context / audio / a word list / asking someone

Quick check: If almost every line has several unknown words, the book may be too hard for independent reading. A graded reader should let you follow the story without stopping all the time.

Choose your graded reader

A graded reader is a book for language learners. Its vocabulary and grammar are controlled for a certain level. Different publishers use different level names, so do not trust a level number alone. Check a short sample and ask: Can I follow the main idea?

Use this three-step test:

  1. Look: Read the title, blurb and one short page.
  2. Try: Read for three minutes without a dictionary.
  3. Decide: Can you explain the basic situation in one or two sentences?

If the answer is no, choose an easier reader. Choosing an easier book is a reading strategy, not a failure.

Reading plan

Keep the plan short. You should be able to change it.

Session Goal Time After reading
Start Meet the setting and main character 10–15 minutes Write one sentence
Next Read one manageable section 10–15 minutes Add one character fact
Continue Follow the main problem 10–20 minutes Add two useful words
Check Re-read one difficult part 5–10 minutes Ask one focused question
Finish Complete the reader Your pace Give an opinion with a reason

Rule: A plan helps you continue. It should not turn reading into a race.

Your help ladder

Use help in this order.

Step What you do Example
English first Read the sentence again. What is happening?
Context Look at the sentences before and after. Is the word positive, negative, a person, an action?
Try Make a simple guess. I think relieved means feeling better.
Ask Ask a focused question. What does this word mean here?
Hint Use a short English hint, picture or synonym. relieved = not worried now
German help Use one short German meaning if needed. erleichtert

Do not translate the whole page. You need enough meaning to continue.

Listening and viewing

Audio can support reading, but it should not do all the work for you.

Audio routine:

  1. Listen once without a transcript.
  2. Say or write the main idea.
  3. Listen again and follow the printed text if your book legally includes audio.
  4. Check only the difficult part.
  5. Use a transcript only after your first listening attempt.

Use school-provided or legally included audio for your chosen reader. Do not upload book pages or audio files to public services.

This video gives ideas for working with e-book graded readers. Use it as a strategy video, not as a replacement for your own book.

Reading: main idea before detail

Read one section of your original reader. Then close the book for a moment.

Answer:

Who is there? Where are they? What changes? What may happen next?

If you can answer most of these questions, you probably understand enough to continue.

Mini practice text – fictional and not part of your reader:

Alex had planned to meet Sam after school. When Alex reached the sports centre, the front door was locked. A note was fixed to the glass: “Training is in the small hall today.” Alex did not know where the small hall was. A student in a blue jacket pointed to a building behind the gym. Alex smiled and hurried across the yard.

Try first: Why does Alex change direction?

Hint: Look at the note and the student in the blue jacket.

German help if needed: locked = verschlossen; pointed = zeigte.

Context vocabulary

Do not collect every unknown word. Collect words that are useful for the story or useful for you.

Use a small vocabulary table:

Word Context clue Simple English help Your example
relieved the problem is over not worried now I was relieved after the test.
notice something you see or read see or become aware of I noticed a new sign.
hurry someone is late move quickly We hurried to the bus.

Good strategy: Guess first. Check second. Keep only useful words.

Pronunciation: understandable first

Your goal is clear, understandable English, not accent-free English.

Choose two useful words from your reader.

  1. Listen to the legal audio or a trusted dictionary pronunciation.
  2. Mark the stressed syllable.
  3. Say the word in a short sentence.
  4. Record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless you actively choose otherwise.

For pronunciation practice, word stress and sentence stress are more useful than trying to copy an accent perfectly.

Character cards

Create one card for each important character. Use evidence from the text, not guesses about real people.

Example profiles are fictional.

Character What I know Text evidence My question
Alex wants to arrive on time Alex hurries to the hall Will Alex find Sam?
Sam is expected at training Alex planned to meet Sam Does Sam know about the new hall?

For your own reader, write short notes. Do not copy long passages.

Speaking: connected ideas

Talk for about 30–60 seconds.

Useful frame:

I think ... because ... . First, ... . Also, ... . My favourite / most interesting character is ... because ... .

You need fewer sentence starters than in E7. Try to connect ideas with because, but, so, then, also.

Partner task: Tell a partner what happened in your last reading section. Your partner asks one question.

Writing: short but connected

Choose one text type.

Text type Task Simple structure
E-mail Recommend or do not recommend the reader to a classmate. greeting → opinion → two reasons → ending
Report Report what happened in one reading session. when → what you read → problem → solution
Opinion text Give your view of a character decision. opinion → reason → example → short ending
Job-style text Imagine a fictional character applies for a simple holiday job. strength → example → reason for applying

Do not ask AI to write the final text for you. You may use feedback to find one or two points to improve, but your ideas and sentences stay yours.

Mediation: help without full translation

A classmate asks in German what your English reader is about.

Do not translate a page. Give the key information in German:

Es geht um ... Die Hauptfigur ... Das wichtigste Problem ist ...

Then return to English and read on.

Functional grammar in the reader

At G level, some forms are mainly for recognition. You do not have to force them into your own writing.

Past perfect: recognise the earlier action

Alex had planned to meet Sam before Alex reached the sports centre.

had planned happened earlier than reached.

Your task: Notice the order of events. You do not need to produce long past-perfect sentences.

Passive: recognise the focus

The front door was locked.

The sentence focuses on the door and its state. In your own G-level writing, use simple active forms when they are easier and clearer.

Optional grammar support:

Reported speech without backshift

At this level, practise simple reporting without forcing backshift.

Direct: Mia says, “I like the story.”

Reported: Mia says that she likes the story.

Use this when you report what a character says. Reported questions, commands and systematic backshift are not your production target here.

Optional support:

Feedback and error analysis

When you get feedback, fix one thing at a time.

If the problem is ... Ask yourself ... Next step
meaning Did I understand the scene? Re-read the paragraph.
vocabulary Did I guess from context first? Check one key word.
sentence Is my message clear? Shorten or connect it.
grammar Does the error block understanding? Fix the important form.
pronunciation Can another person understand me? Repeat slowly and stress the key word.

Direct feedback rule: Clear meaning comes first. Then improve accuracy.

Safe and responsible use of media and AI

Use legally available media and school-approved tools. The Commons images in this aiMOOC are reusable under the licences shown on their file pages.

Recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless you decide otherwise. Do not upload recordings, private social-media data, book pages or copyrighted audio without permission.

If you use AI for a learning step, check whether the language really fits your level, whether factual claims are correct and whether the feedback makes sense. AI should not replace your reading, thinking or writing. Do not send content to an external AI service unless your school and you have chosen to use that service.

Can-do check

Mark each line with: yes / almost / not yet.

I can ... Check
choose a reader that I can follow
make and adjust a reading plan
read for the main idea before checking words
use context and then vocabulary help
create character cards with evidence
use audio after a first attempt
give an opinion with a reason
recognise simple past perfect and passive forms
report a statement without backshift
decide when I need help and what kind

Transfer and follow-up

For the next reader, make one change that gives you more independence: read a slightly longer section, use fewer vocabulary checks, speak for a little longer or write with fewer sentence starters.
