E8 G - Present a place or project

Mini-Beschreibung: Present a place, a region or a small project in several connected sentences. You give clear facts, add your opinion and give one reason.

English first: Look → think → try → ask → use a hint. German help is only for key words if you still need it.

Einleitung

In this aiMOOC you learn how to give a short presentation in English. You can choose a place, a region or a small project. Your presentation should be easy to follow. Use connected sentences and say why your topic is interesting to you.

Safe learning: Use only pictures you may use. Do not share private social-media data. Audio or video recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless your teacher and you agree otherwise. If you use AI, check its language, facts and feedback. AI should help you improve your own text, not replace it.

I can ...

  1. I can present a place or project in several connected sentences.
  2. I can give clear information about where, what and why.
  3. I can give an opinion with a reason using because.
  4. I can understand short presentations when people speak clearly.
  5. I can ask and answer simple follow-up questions.

Vorwissen: Look and say

Try first. Say three things you can see. Then add one guess.

Helpful words: bridge – river – city – old – high – interesting

Example pattern: I can see ... . There is ... . I think this place is ... because ... .

Model 1: A place – Bristol

Read the model.

Bristol is a city in South West England. It lies on the River Avon. The harbour is an important part of the city. The Clifton Suspension Bridge crosses the Avon Gorge and the River Avon. The bridge was opened in 1864, and people can walk across it today. I think Bristol is an interesting place because the river, the harbour and the bridge give the city a special look.

Notice the structure: place → location → two details → opinion + reason.

Visual follow-up

Look at the picture for 20 seconds. Then say one fact you can see and one opinion. Do not search for extra facts yet.

Model 2: A small project

Fictional model: Green Corner

Our class started a small school-garden project. The garden is behind the sports hall. We planted herbs and flowers and made two signs in English. My job was to design one sign. I like the project because our school looks greener now.

Your project can be small: a class poster, a reading corner, a sports event, a garden idea or another school activity.

Context vocabulary

English Quick help Useful example
place Ort an interesting place
region Region a region in the north
project Projekt our class project
sight Sehenswürdigkeit a famous sight
harbour Hafen near the harbour
bridge Brücke across the bridge
improve verbessern improve our school
because weil I like it because ...

Pronunciation

Speak clearly. You do not need a perfect accent.

  1. bridge: one short syllable; finish the final sound clearly.
  2. harbour: stress the first syllable.
  3. project as a noun: stress the first syllable.
  4. region: stress the first syllable.

Try each word once in a sentence. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.

Listening

One speaker, moderate pace, two readings. A teacher or partner can read the text twice. A private recording is optional. Do not open the transcript before your first listening attempt.

First listening: What is the topic?

Second listening: Note:

  1. the location,
  2. two things in Bristol,
  3. one reason for the speaker's opinion.

Transcript – open only after listening

Hi, I'm Maya. Today I want to present Bristol, a city in South West England. It lies on the River Avon. I chose Bristol because the harbour and the Clifton Suspension Bridge are easy to recognise. The bridge was opened in 1864. For me, the harbour is the most interesting place because you can see boats and old buildings.

Quick check: You should hear one speaker, one city, two main sights and one personal reason.

Viewing

First viewing: watch before reading extra information.

Watch a short part without subtitles first.

  1. Name three things you can see.
  2. Which image would you use in a presentation?
  3. Watch again with subtitles if needed and note two useful place words.

Hint: You do not need to understand every word.

Second media view

Watch for visual information. Compare the video with the photos above. Say one similarity and one difference.

Reading strategy

Read the Bristol model again.

Find four jobs in the text:

  1. Where is it?
  2. What is there?
  3. What can people do?
  4. Why does the speaker like it?

Hint: Do not translate every sentence. Look for place words, verbs and because.

Functional grammar

For this task, use mainly familiar forms: present simple, there is / there are, can and simple past when you need it.

Understand these forms, but you do not have to produce them:

  1. The bridge was opened in 1864. → passive: the focus is on the bridge.
  2. Before Maya visited Bristol, she had seen the bridge in photos. → past perfect: one past action happened before another.
  3. Maya says that the harbour is her favourite place. → reported speech without backshift.

German key-word help if needed: was opened = wurde eröffnet; had seen = hatte gesehen.

Speaking

Your goal: 30–45 seconds.

Choose a place, region or project. Make four notes only:

Part Your note
Topic What are you presenting?
Context Where is it or what is the project?
Details Give two useful details.
Opinion Why do you like or choose it?

Useful starters:

  1. My topic is ...
  2. One important thing is ...
  3. I like / chose it because ...
  4. Finally, ...

Partner questions: Ask two simple questions, for example Where is it? or Why did you choose it?

Help ladder

  1. Try: Speak from your notes.
  2. Hint 1: Use the vocabulary table.
  3. Hint 2: Look at one model again.
  4. Ask: Ask a partner or teacher for one word or one grammar hint.
  5. German help: Use a German key word only if you are still stuck.

Writing

Write a short e-mail or mini report of about 70–90 words. Use 6–8 connected sentences.

Include:

  1. topic and location or context,
  2. two clear details,
  3. one opinion,
  4. one reason with because,
  5. a short ending.

For a project, you can also add your role: My job was to ...

Check before you finish: Are your sentences connected with words such as and, but, because, also, then or finally?

Mediation

Do not translate every word. Give only the information your English-speaking partner needs.

German source: Der Schulgarten liegt hinter der Sporthalle. Die AG trifft sich dienstags um 13:30 Uhr. Besucher sollen das Gartentor geschlossen halten.

Task: Explain in English:

  1. where the garden is,
  2. when the group meets,
  3. one rule for visitors.

Direct feedback

After speaking or writing, use this quick feedback:

  1. Clear topic? Yes / not yet
  2. Two useful details? Yes / not yet
  3. Opinion + reason? Yes / not yet
  4. Connected sentences? Yes / not yet
  5. Easy to understand? Yes / not yet

If one point is not yet, change only that point first.

Error analysis

Fix the sentences.

  1. There are a famous bridge in Bristol.
  2. Bristol is on South West England.
  3. I like the harbour because it is interest.
  4. My project help our school.

Check

  1. There is a famous bridge in Bristol.
  2. Bristol is in South West England.
  3. I like the harbour because it is interesting.
  4. My project helps our school.

Transfer

Now use the same structure for something from your own world: your town, a holiday region, a sports place, a class project or another small project.

Media rule: Use your own media or freely licensed media. Do not use private profiles, private messages or other people's personal data.

AI rule: If AI is allowed, use it for a word hint, a grammar check or feedback. Check the result yourself and keep your own ideas and wording.
