E8 G - Give a simple reaction to a chapter
E8 G - Give a simple reaction to a chapter
Einleitung
Mini-Beschreibung: Give a short reaction to a chapter. Say what you think or feel about a character, an event or a surprise, and give one simple reason.

Look first: What do you think the students may feel about their books? Choose one word: interested – surprised – bored – excited. Then add one reason with because.
This aiMOOC is for English as a first foreign language, Klasse 8, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg. You work mainly in English. If you get stuck: try → ask → use a hint → use short German help. There is no full translation.

What you already know
Think for 30 seconds. Can you already say: I liked ..., I didn't like ..., I was surprised ..., because ...?
Try first: “I liked the last chapter because ...”
Hint: Use one clear idea. You do not need a long answer.
Deutsch-Hilfe bei Bedarf: Sage zuerst deine Reaktion. Danach folgt mit because ein einfacher Grund.
Learning routine
| Step | What you do |
|---|---|
| English first | Read, listen or speak in English first. |
| Context | Use the title, picture and story situation. |
| Try | Give your best short answer. |
| Ask | Ask a partner or teacher when you are stuck. |
| Hint | Use the word box or language ladder. |
| German help if needed | Use a short German explanation, then return to English. |
Media start: react with one sentence

Look at the face. Say one sentence: I think the person is surprised because ...
Now compare your sentence with a partner. Different answers are okay when the reason is clear.
Context: a short fictional chapter

Chapter 4: The Storm at the Library
Nia, Ben and Omar were in the school library after class. They were preparing a poster for the school reading day. Outside, the rain got stronger. Suddenly, the lights went out. Omar laughed, but Nia felt nervous. Ben stayed calm. He took a small torch from his bag and helped the others find the door. The door was opened by Mr Jones, the caretaker. Ben had packed the torch that morning because he had seen the weather forecast. Nia said, “I thought Ben was quiet, but he was really helpful.” At the end, the three friends finished the poster in another room. Nia was surprised by Ben and felt much better.
All characters are fictional.
First reaction
Do not analyse every sentence. Give one quick reaction.
Model: I liked Ben because he helped the group.
Your turn: I was __________ because __________.
Another option: I liked / didn't like __________ because __________.
Listening and Viewing
Watch the short BBC Learning English video once without stopping. Listen for one useful phrase for giving an opinion.
First viewing: Which phrase sounds useful for a polite opinion?
Second viewing: Listen again. Write down only 2–4 useful words, not a full transcript.
After your listening attempt: The main learning idea is that an opinion can sound less direct when you use a soft phrase before it. For this course, simple phrases such as I think ... and I feel ... are enough.
Optional extra viewing: This longer video gives more phrases for opinions. Use only phrases you understand.
Short listening text
Ask a teacher or partner to read this text twice at a moderate, clear speed. Do not read the transcript first.
Task: Listen for: Who reacts? What is the reaction? What is the reason?
Transcript — open/read only after listening: “I liked the ending. I was surprised because Ben had a torch. He helped the others, so the group could finish the poster.”
Check: The speaker likes the ending and gives a reason connected to Ben's action.
Reading: find the reaction point

Read Chapter 4 again. Find one sentence about:
- a character: Who does something important?
- an event: What changes the situation?
- a surprise: What did you not expect?
Now choose one point only and react to it.
Example: I was surprised by Ben because he was calm in the dark.
Context vocabulary
| English | Easy meaning or clue |
|---|---|
| chapter | one part of a book |
| character | a person in a story |
| event | something that happens |
| surprised | you did not expect it |
| helpful | ready to help |
| calm | not nervous |
| reason | why you think or feel something |
| ending | the last part |
Try first: Use the English clue. Ask for German help only if the clue is not enough.
Pronunciation: clear before perfect

Say these words slowly, then in a sentence: chapter – character – surprised – because.
Focus on being understandable. You do not need to copy one special accent.
Mini practice: “I was surprised because Ben was helpful.”
Speaking: reaction + reason
Use this easy structure:
| Step | Language |
|---|---|
| 1 Reaction | I liked ... / I didn't like ... / I was surprised ... |
| 2 Text point | Ben / Nia / the lights / the ending ... |
| 3 Reason | because ... |
30-second speaking task: Give a short reaction to Chapter 4. Use 2–3 connected sentences.
Ask your partner: “Why?”
Partner feedback: Can you hear a clear reaction and a clear reason? Say one thing that works and one small next step.
Recording option: Recording yourself is voluntary. Keep recordings private unless you actively choose to share them in a safe school setting. Do not upload recordings without permission.
Writing: a mini reaction
Write 3–5 sentences.
Writing frame:
I think Chapter 4 is __________. I liked / didn't like __________ because __________. I was surprised when __________. My favourite / least favourite moment was __________ because __________.
You can use fewer sentence starters if you can connect your ideas on your own.
Mini e-mail option
Write a short e-mail to a fictional classmate, Sam. Sam is a fictional profile; no real personal data are needed.
Subject: Chapter 4
Hi Sam,
I just read Chapter 4. I ... because ... . I was surprised when ... . What did you think?
Bye,
[first name or school nickname]
Mediation: meaning, not full translation
A German-speaking classmate asks what Nia thinks about Ben.
Explain the idea in 1–2 short German sentences. Do not translate the whole chapter. Include:
- Nia's reaction to Ben.
- One reason from the text.
Then switch back to English and say: Nia is surprised because ...
Functional grammar for this task
For your own reaction, keep the grammar simple.
| Function | Useful form |
|---|---|
| opinion | I think ... |
| feeling | I was surprised ... |
| reason | ... because ... |
| past event | Ben helped the group. |
| report without backshift | Nia says that Ben was helpful. |
Main production target: Use simple past and because when they help you say your meaning.
Read-only grammar: notice, do not force it
You may see forms that you do not need to produce yourself at G-Niveau.
Passive: “The door was opened by Mr Jones.” → Question for meaning: Who opened the door? Mr Jones.
Past perfect: “Ben had packed the torch before the lights went out.” → Question for meaning: What happened first? Ben packed the torch.
You only need to understand these forms here. Do not force them into your speaking or writing.
Helpful language ladder
Try: I liked Ben because he helped.
A little more: I liked Ben because he stayed calm and helped the group.
Challenge: At first I thought Ben was very quiet, but I changed my mind because he helped everyone.
German help if needed: Reaktion zuerst, Grund danach. Ein klarer Grund reicht.
Direct feedback and error analysis
Check these common errors.
| Not yet | Better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| I was surprise. | I was surprised. | After was, use surprised for the feeling. |
| I liked Ben because he help. | I liked Ben because he helped. | The story is in the past. |
| Because he was helpful. | I liked Ben because he was helpful. | Give the reaction and the reason together. |
| I like because Ben. | I liked Ben because he helped. | Put the person or event after liked. |
Quick feedback: If your listener understands your reaction and your reason, your main goal is reached. Fix one error at a time.
Safe and smart use of digital tools and AI
You do not need AI for this course. If AI is used in class, check whether its language really fits G-Niveau, check factual claims and check feedback before using it. Keep your own ideas and your own text; AI should not replace your work. Do not send private recordings, names, accounts or other personal data to external services without permission.
