E8 G - Geography through pictures and maps

Mini-description: In this aiMOOC you explore New Zealand with simple maps, landscape photos, short captions and short English texts. You learn to understand geographic features and to talk and write about them in clear connected sentences.

Level: English as first foreign language, Klasse 8, Baden-Württemberg, G-Niveau.

Learning route: English first → use the picture or map → try → ask → use a hint → use short German help only if needed. There is no full translation.

Caption: New Zealand is in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Australia.

Look first: Point to Australia. Then point to New Zealand. Say: New Zealand is ... of Australia.

Quick help: east = östlich, ocean = Ozean.

I can ...

At the end I can ... My goal
find New Zealand on a simple map I can use north, south, east and west.
describe a landscape picture I can name visible features and give one reason.
understand a short geography text I can find key facts without translating every word.
understand a short clear video I can listen for place names and key words.
speak about two pictures I can connect ideas with and, but, because, so.
write a short photo report I can organise 80–100 words clearly.

Before you start: What do you already know?

Caption: A relief map shows high and low land.

  1. Map reading: Find the North Island and the South Island.
  2. Prior knowledge: What colours or shadows show high land?
  3. Prediction: Where do you expect mountains?
  4. Speaking: Say one sentence: I think the highest land is in ... because ...

Hint: You do not need every place name. Start with shape, direction and height.

Picture geography: New Zealand

New Zealand has two main islands: the North Island and the South Island. They are separated by Cook Strait. The country lies in the South Pacific Ocean. Much of the land is close to the sea.

The South Island has the Southern Alps'. Its highest mountain is Aoraki / Mount Cook at about 3,724 metres. The North Island has important volcanic and geothermal areas. New Zealand also has plains, beaches, harbours, lakes and steep fiords.

Caption: Aoraki / Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand.

Picture task: Find three things you can see. Use: mountain – snow – valley – steep – high.

Caption: Geothermal activity near Rotorua on the North Island.

Picture task: What tells you that heat is coming from below the ground?

Caption: Piopiotahi / Milford Sound is a fiord on the South Island. Glaciers shaped the steep valley.

Think: Why are the sides so steep? Use the word glacier.

Caption: The Canterbury Plains are wide and much flatter than the Southern Alps.

Compare: The mountains are ..., but the plains are ...

Caption: A west-coast beach near Haast on the South Island.

Look closely: Name the land, water and weather features you can see.

Caption: Wellington is New Zealand's capital and lies beside a large harbour.

Map link: Find Wellington on a map. Is it on the North Island or the South Island?

Caption: Auckland is a large urban area on the North Island.

City geography: What is different from the mountain and coast pictures? Name two human-made features.

Caption: Lake Tekapo lies on the South Island near the Southern Alps.

One-sentence challenge: Describe the picture with in the background.

Why is the landscape so varied?

New Zealand lies where two large tectonic plates meet. Their movement helps explain many earthquakes, mountains and volcanic areas. On the South Island, the Southern Alps are linked to this plate movement. In the southwest, glaciers shaped deep valleys. Some valleys later filled with sea water and became fiords.

G-level focus: Understand the big idea. You do not need detailed plate names for the main task.

German help if needed: tectonic plate = Erdplatte, earthquake = Erdbeben, glacier = Gletscher.

Reading

Read once without a dictionary. Underline only place names and geography words.

A picture trip across New Zealand

Mia is making a school poster about New Zealand. First, she looks at a world map. New Zealand is in the South Pacific Ocean. Then she studies a relief map. She sees that the South Island has a long mountain area. Aoraki / Mount Cook is the highest mountain in the country. In a photo of Piopiotahi / Milford Sound, steep mountains rise next to dark water. The valley was shaped by glaciers. On the North Island, Mia finds Rotorua, where geothermal activity can be seen. Her last picture shows Wellington Harbour. Mia says that maps and photos work well together because maps show location and pictures show what a place looks like.

Reading check:

  1. Which island has the Southern Alps?
  2. What shaped the valley at Piopiotahi / Milford Sound?
  3. What can you see near Rotorua?
  4. Why does Mia use both maps and pictures?

Direct feedback: If you can answer 3 of 4 questions with short English phrases, continue. If not, read the first sentence of each part again and use the context vocabulary below.

Context vocabulary

Word Simple English meaning German help if needed
island land with water around it Insel
coast land next to the sea Küste
plain a large flat area Ebene
mountain range a long group of mountains Gebirge
glacier a large moving mass of ice Gletscher
fiord a long narrow sea inlet with steep sides Fjord
volcano a mountain where hot material can come from the Earth Vulkan
geothermal connected with heat from inside the Earth Erdwärme
harbour protected water where ships can stay Hafen
earthquake shaking of the ground Erdbeben
relief map a map that shows high and low land Reliefkarte
landscape what an area of land looks like Landschaft

Vocabulary strategy: First look at the picture or sentence. Guess. Then check the table.

Pronunciation

Say the words slowly, then in a sentence.

  1. island: the s is silent.
  2. mountain: stress the first syllable.
  3. geography: stress the second syllable.
  4. volcano: stress the middle part.
  5. landscape: stress the first syllable.

Try: This island has a mountain landscape.

Goal: Be easy to understand. A perfect accent is not the goal.

Listening and viewing

Viewing 1 – no transcript, no full notes: Watch the short video once. Tick only what you hear or see: North Island – South Island – mountains – volcanoes – fiords – plains.

Viewing 2: Watch again. Write three key words and one place name.

After your own try: Use English captions or pause the video if you need more support. Do not translate every sentence.

Check yourself: Can you explain the video in three connected sentences?

Optional viewing: Watch only a short section chosen by your teacher. Focus on maps and place names, not on every spoken detail.

Mini-listening with transcript after the try

Step 1: A teacher or partner reads this short text twice at a moderate speed. One speaker is enough. Keep the transcript closed first.

Questions: Which island has the Southern Alps? What can happen near plate boundaries? What place has geothermal activity?

Transcript – open only after listening:

New Zealand has two main islands. The South Island has the Southern Alps and high mountains. The North Island has important volcanic areas. Near Rotorua, heat from inside the Earth can be seen at the surface. New Zealand lies where large tectonic plates meet, so earthquakes are part of the country's geography. Maps help us find these places, and photos help us understand the landscape.

Listening feedback: If you missed a word, ask: Can you repeat the sentence, please? Then listen again before using German help.

Speaking

Task: Compare two pictures for 45–60 seconds.

Choose two pictures from this course. Say:

  1. where the places are,
  2. what you can see,
  3. one difference,
  4. which picture helps you understand geography better and why.

Useful language: Both pictures show ... / In the first picture ... / However ... / I think ... because ...

Help ladder:

  1. Try with the picture only.
  2. Ask: What does ... mean?
  3. Use the vocabulary table.
  4. Use one German key word only if you are still stuck.

Private option: You may record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless your teacher and you clearly agree on another use. Do not upload recordings automatically.

Writing

Photo report: 80–100 words

Choose one landscape photo. Write a short report with four parts:

  1. place and location,
  2. two visible features,
  3. one geography fact,
  4. your opinion with a reason.

Small writing frame: The photo shows ... It is on/in ... I can see ... This is important because ... In my view ...

Use connected sentences. You do not need many sentence starters.

Self-check: Did you use a place name, two geography words, one connector and one reason?

Mediation

A German-speaking visitor asks: Was ist an Neuseelands Landschaft besonders?

Use the English map, pictures and reading text. Explain four key points in German in your own words. Do not translate line by line. Keep place names in their usual form.

Focus: location – two main islands – mountains or volcanoes – one example landscape.

Functional grammar

Grammar helps you understand geography. At G level, the passive and past perfect are mainly receptive here. You do not have to force them into your own text.

Passive – understand the meaning: Piopiotahi / Milford Sound was shaped by glaciers.

Meaning: glaciers shaped the valley.

The Southern Alps are shown on the relief map.

Meaning: you can see the Southern Alps on the map.

Past perfect – understand time order: Before sea water entered the valley, glaciers had shaped the land.

Question: What happened first? → The glaciers shaped the land.

Reported speech without backshift: Direct: Mia says, "The South Island has high mountains."

Reported: Mia says that the South Island has high mountains.

Try: Change this sentence: Leo says, "Rotorua has geothermal activity."

Answer check: Leo says that Rotorua has geothermal activity.

Error analysis

Find the problem. Is it a map fact, a word choice or grammar problem?

  1. New Zealand is west of Australia. → Check the world map.
  2. New Zealand have two main islands. → Check subject and verb.
  3. Piopiotahi / Milford Sound is a plain. → Check the photo and vocabulary.
  4. The Southern Alps is on the South Island. → Check plural grammar.

Feedback: Correct only one problem at a time. First meaning, then grammar.

Transfer

Choose a place you know in Germany or another country. Compare it with one New Zealand landscape.

Use: Both places have ... A difference is ... The map shows ... The picture helps me see ...

Do not use cultural stereotypes. Compare visible geography and checked facts.

Safe and responsible media use

The images in this course come from Wikimedia Commons. Check the licence on the file page when you reuse an image. YouTube videos are embedded, not copied.

Use fictional profiles in classroom examples. Do not add private social-media data.

If your class uses AI tools, check the language level, facts and feedback. AI may support your work, but it should not replace your own text. Do not send recordings, private data or school work to an external AI service without clear teacher instructions and permission.
