E8 G - Explain a simple cultural reference

Mini-description: Explain a simple culture word when a direct translation is not enough. You learn with the example prom. English comes first. Use context, try, ask, take a hint, and use short German help only if you still need it.

Media start – Look, think, say: What can you see? Say three simple things in English. Then guess: What could prom mean?

Important: One photo shows one event. It does not show every school, every student or every English-speaking country.

I can ...

  1. Cultural reference: I can explain a simple culture word in clear English.
  2. Use context: I can use a picture, a sentence and key words before I ask for German help.
  3. Speaking: I can give a short explanation and one reason.
  4. Writing: I can write a short message that explains a culture word.
  5. Mediation: I can help a German-speaking person understand the main idea without translating every word.

What do you already know?

Think about films, series, books or songs in English. Have you seen the word prom?

Try this order:

  1. Context: Look at the picture and the sentence: “We are getting ready for prom on Friday.”
  2. Try: Say one idea in English.
  3. Ask: Ask a partner: “What do you think prom means here?”
  4. Hint: It is a school event. People may dress up, meet friends and dance.
  5. German help if needed: Eine prom ist eine formelle Schulfeier bzw. Tanzveranstaltung, oft für ältere Schülerinnen und Schüler. Das ist nur eine Verständnishilfe, keine Vollübersetzung.

Culture word in context: prom

In the United States, prom usually means a formal dance or school celebration for older high-school students. Details are different from school to school. Students may go with friends, with a date or in a group. Some people dress formally. Others keep things simpler.

The word also appears in Britain, where some schools have proms near the end of secondary school. A German word such as “Abschlussball” can help, but it may not explain the full school context. So a short English explanation is often better.

Useful model: “A prom is a formal school event for older students. People often dress up, meet friends and dance.”

Picture task: Find evidence for two words from the model explanation. Do not guess how all students feel.

Listening and Viewing

Watch the short VOA Learning English video. First viewing: only get the main idea. Second viewing: listen for formal, high school, friends and dance.

After viewing:

  1. Say the topic in one English sentence.
  2. Name two details you understood.
  3. Compare one detail with the photo above.

Need help? Watch again. Pause after short parts. Use the images. Do not open the transcript help before you have tried twice.

Transcript help – simplified course text, not a full transcript:

“Prom is a formal school event. It is often near the end of the school year. Students may wear special clothes, take photos, meet friends and dance. Some spend a lot of money, but others borrow clothes or choose cheaper options. Going with friends is also possible.”

A second view: culture changes

School events are not fixed. In 2020, some students used online events when normal school celebrations were not possible.

Viewing question: What changed: the name, the main social idea, or the way people met? Give one short reason.

Reading

Read this fictional message.

Fictional profile: Jamie, 17, River Park High

“Hey Sam, our prom is next month. It is a formal school evening for older students. I am going with three friends. We will take photos first and then meet our class at the venue. I do not want an expensive outfit, so I am borrowing a jacket. My cousin asked if prom is just a party. I said it is a school tradition, but every school does it a little differently.”

Check your understanding:

  1. Why is “party” not the full explanation?
  2. Who is Jamie going with?
  3. How does Jamie save money?
  4. Which sentence warns us not to generalise?

Context vocabulary

Word Easy English help Use it
formal special and more official than everyday a formal event
venue the place where an event happens meet at the venue
dress up wear special or smart clothes dress up for an event
tradition something people do again over time a school tradition
borrow use something and give it back later borrow a jacket
explain make an idea clear explain a culture word

Fast strategy: Do not translate every word. First ask: Is it a person, place, action or idea? Then use the sentence around it.

Pronunciation

prom has one syllable. Keep it short and clear. Your goal is to be understandable, not to copy one special accent.

Say these chunks slowly, then normally:

  1. a school prom
  2. go to prom
  3. a formal event
  4. explain the word

Partner check: Can your partner understand the key word? If yes, continue. Accent-free speech is not the goal.

Speaking: explain it in 20 seconds

Use this small frame. Try without reading at the end.

A prom is ... It usually happens ... People may ... It is not exactly the same as ... because ...

Example: “A prom is a formal school event for older students. It often happens near the end of school. People may dress up and meet friends. It is not exactly the same as every German school celebration because the traditions and school context can be different.”

Direct feedback: Your explanation works if it has:

  1. the main meaning,
  2. one context detail,
  3. one “may/often” word instead of a stereotype,
  4. clear English.

Mediation: help a German-speaking friend

Your friend asks: “Was bedeutet prom in dieser Filmszene?”

Do not translate the whole scene. Give the key idea:

Start in English: “It is a school event for older students.” Add context: “They are talking about a formal evening with friends.” German help only if needed: “Das ist ungefähr eine formelle Schulfeier bzw. ein Schulball, aber die genaue Tradition hängt von der Schule ab.”

That is mediation: you carry the important meaning across. You do not replace every English sentence with German.

Functional grammar: notice, do not force

At G level, some forms are mainly for understanding here.

Passive – receptive: “The hall was decorated for prom.” Ask: What is important: who decorated it, or the hall? → the hall

Past perfect – receptive: “When Jamie arrived, the music had already started.” Ask: Which happened first? → the music started

Reported speech without backshift: Jamie says: “Prom is different at every school.” → Jamie says that prom is different at every school.

You do not need to produce difficult passive or past-perfect forms to explain the culture word. Use simple clear sentences if they work better.

Error analysis and repair

Read the three weak explanations.

  1. “Prom = Abschlussball.” → Problem: too short; culture context is missing. Repair: Add school, age group and typical purpose.
  2. “All American students go with a date.” → Problem: stereotype. Repair: Use some, many, may or often.
  3. “Prom is when expensive clothes are worn by students who had been invited.” → Problem: too difficult for the job. Repair: “At some proms, students wear formal clothes.”

Rule: Clear meaning is more important than difficult grammar.

Media comparison: then and now

Compare the historical photos with the modern photo at the start.

Say:

  1. one thing that looks different,
  2. one thing that seems similar,
  3. one thing you cannot know from a photo.

A picture is evidence for what is visible. It is not proof that “everyone” behaved in the same way.

Culture comparison without clichés

A formal school celebration is not unique to the USA.

This photo shows a Finnish school celebration with its own tradition. Do not call it “the same as prom”. Instead say: “Both are school celebrations, but the traditions are not identical.”

Transfer phrase: “This reminds me of ..., but I need more context before I say they are the same.”

Writing: a short explanation message

Write 60–80 words to a fictional exchange student named Alex.

Task: Alex has seen the word prom in a film. Explain it.

Use:

  1. one definition,
  2. two context details,
  3. one careful word such as often, may or some,
  4. one final sentence: “At your school, it may be different.”

Writing frame if needed: “Hi Alex, A prom is ... It often ... Students may ... The exact tradition ... Hope that helps!”

Feedback ladder

Before you ask for a full correction, try this order:

  1. Self-check: Is my main idea clear?
  2. Partner-check: Which word or sentence is hard to understand?
  3. Hint: Add who, where or why.
  4. Teacher feedback: Ask for one next step, not a complete rewrite.
  5. German help: Use one short German explanation only if the English meaning is still unclear.

If you use an AI tool in a school setting, check the facts, the language level and the feedback. Do not let it replace your own text. Do not upload private recordings, personal social-media data or other people’s work without permission. Recordings should be voluntary and private unless your teacher has arranged a safe school system.

Can-do check

Mark each statement: Yes – Almost – Not yet.

  1. I can explain prom in two or three clear English sentences.
  2. I can use context before I ask for German.
  3. I can avoid “all Americans ...” statements.
  4. I can understand simple passive and past-perfect forms in context.
  5. I can give a short reason for my explanation.
  6. I can mediate the main idea without a full translation.

Next step: E8 G - Compare cultural practices – compare two school or everyday practices with careful language.

Standard

  1. 20-second explanation: Explain prom to a partner without reading. Your partner gives one “clear” point and one next step.
  2. Short message: Write 60–80 words to fictional student Alex and explain prom with careful language.
  3. Mediation task: A German friend asks what prom means in a film. Give the key idea in English first, then one short German help sentence if needed.
  4. Media check: Compare a historical and a modern prom photo. Write two observations and one thing the photos cannot tell you.

Schwer

  1. Careful comparison: Compare prom with a school celebration you know. Use “both”, “but”, “may” and “different”.
  2. Repair task: Write three bad explanations with stereotypes or unnecessary difficult grammar. Then improve them.
  3. Class interview: Ask classmates which school celebrations they know. Do not collect private data. Summarise patterns without naming people.
  4. Mini explainer: Plan a 45-second explainer with a picture, a short definition and one warning against overgeneralising. Use only rights-safe media.

  1. Context transfer: In a new film scene, a student says, “I need a suit for homecoming.” Explain how you would find out whether homecoming is only a party or a wider school tradition. Do not guess the final meaning without context.
  2. Compare explanations: Explain why “Prom = Abschlussball” is useful as first help but not enough as a full cultural explanation.
  3. Language choice: Rewrite “All American students spend a lot of money on prom” so that the statement becomes careful and fair. Explain your change.
