E8 G - Conditional II – Imaginary situations

Einleitung

Imagine it! What would you do if you had one free day, a dream room or a new skill? In this aiMOOC you use simple Conditional II patterns for imaginary or unlikely situations and wishes. The course is for English as a first foreign language, class 8, G level, Baden-Württemberg.

Look – think – speak: Look at the picture. Finish one sentence: If I had more free time, I would … Then give one reason with because.

Help ladder: English first → use the picture and context → try → ask → use a hint → short German help if needed. You do not need a full translation.

I can …

  1. I can talk about an imaginary situation with if + simple past and would + verb.
  2. I can express a simple wish with I wish ….
  3. I can connect my idea and a reason with because, so or but.
  4. I can understand the main idea in a short text or clear video about imaginary situations.

What you already know

You already know the simple past, common verbs and will / would. Try these first:

  1. Complete: Yesterday I ___ to school. → went.
  2. Complete: I would ___ more. → use the base verb, for example read.
  3. Say one real future idea: If it rains, I will … This is Conditional I.

Media start: What would you change?

Quick challenge: Imagine this is your class. Say two connected ideas: If our classroom had a quiet corner, I would use it at break because …

Do not worry about a perfect accent. Being easy to understand is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

The core pattern

Meaning: Conditional II is useful for situations that are imaginary, unreal or not very likely now or in the future.

Pattern: If + simple past, would + base verb.

Situation Example Why?
imaginary free time If I had more time, I would learn guitar. I do not have that extra time now.
imaginary school change If our school started later, I would sleep longer. The school does not start later now.
advice If I were you, I would ask the teacher. I imagine being in your situation.

You can change the order: I would learn guitar if I had more time.

Important: Do not use would in the if-part in this basic pattern. If I would have more time … → not the target pattern If I had more time, I would … → target pattern

Wishes

Use a simple wish to talk about something you want to be different now.

I wish I had more free time. I wish our bus came earlier.

For this course, keep wishes short and clear. You do not need advanced wish patterns.

Mini-task: Dream home. Say three sentences: If I lived in my dream home, I would … It would have … I wish my room had …

Listening and viewing

Use the BBC Learning English video in small steps.

  1. First viewing, no captions: Watch about 0:35–2:45. What is the topic? Choose: real plans / imaginary situations / past events.
  2. Second viewing: Listen again. Note two words after if and two verbs after would.
  3. Check: Watch the same part again with captions or transcript only now.
  4. Say it: Pause after one example and make your own similar sentence.

Hint: Listen for the two parts: if … + would ….

German help if needed: if introduces the imagined condition; would introduces the imagined result. Do not translate every word.

Extra viewing

Choose only a short section if the full lesson is too long. Stop after an example, predict the next form, then check. The goal is not speed; the goal is noticing the pattern.

Reading: Three imaginary choices

All profiles below are fictional.

Mina likes drawing, but she shares a small desk with her brother. If I had my own desk, I would draw every evening, she says. She would also keep her pencils in one place because she often loses them.

Noah usually takes the bus to school. He says, If the weather were better, I would cycle more often. He likes the idea because he could move more before lessons.

Lea is shy when she speaks English. If I were more confident, I would speak more in class, she says. She knows mistakes are normal, so she wants to try one extra sentence each lesson.

Reading check: Who wants more space? Who would cycle more? Who wants to speak more English? Find the exact sentence that gives the reason.

Transfer: If I cycled to school every day, I would … because … Make one realistic reason and one funny imaginary reason.

Context vocabulary

Word / phrase Easy meaning Example
imagine make a picture in your mind Imagine you had a free day.
wish want something to be different I wish I had more time.
confident sure enough to try I would speak more if I felt confident.
choice something you can choose What choice would you make?
improve make better I would improve the school garden.
reason why you think something Give one reason with because.

Word strategy: First use the picture, the sentence and words you know. Ask for a hint before asking for a German meaning.

Pronunciation and speaking

In fast English, would is often less stressed than the main verb. Keep the important words clear:

If I HAD more TIME, I would LEARN guitar.

Useful short forms: I'd, you'd, we'd, they'd. If contractions make you less clear, use the full form.

Echo practice: Say each sentence once slowly and once naturally.

  1. If I had more time, I would read more.
  2. If I were you, I would ask for help.
  3. I wish I had a bigger desk.

Ask – answer – reason: A: What would you do if you had a free afternoon? B: I would meet my friends because … A: Why? B: Give one more short reason.

Functional grammar: use it, do not overlearn it

For E8 G, use the pattern to communicate. You do not need long grammar labels.

Function Helpful frame
imaginary situation If I had …, I would …
imaginary place If I lived in …, I would …
advice If I were you, I would …
wish now I wish I had …
opinion + reason I would … because …

G-level boundary: In other class-8 texts you may meet past perfect or passive forms. At G level, these can be mainly receptive in this phase; do not force them into your own Conditional-II sentences. Reported speech can be used without backshift when needed. More complex productive passive work and backshift, questions and commands belong to M/E demands. The past perfect progressive is not a productive target here; in the stated progression it is only relevant receptively at E level. The focus here stays on clear Conditional-II communication.

Direct feedback: common errors

Try Feedback Better
If I would have more time, I would read. The if-part needs simple past in the target pattern. If I had more time, I would read.
If I had more time, I would readed. After would, use the base verb. If I had more time, I would read.
If I was you, I would ask. For the classroom advice pattern, use were. If I were you, I would ask.
I wish I would have more time. For a simple present wish here, use simple past. I wish I had more time.

Error routine: Find the part → name the pattern → repair one word → read the whole sentence aloud.

Speaking task: The imaginary choice cards

Work with a partner. Choose one prompt:

  1. If you had one extra hour every day, what would you do?
  2. If your class had 100 euros for one small project, what would you change?
  3. If you could learn one new skill quickly, what would it be?

Answer with two connected statements and one reason. Partner asks one follow-up question. Use the help ladder before switching to German.

Writing task: A short opinion message

Write about 70–90 words on this prompt: If I could change one thing at school, I would …

Use this frame only if you need it: I would change … If …, I would … This would help because … I also think … I wish …

Check before you finish: one if-clause, one would + verb, one reason, clear punctuation. Do not replace your own text with AI-generated text. If you use digital feedback, check whether the suggestion is correct and suitable for your level.

Mediation: Help a visitor

A German school notice says: „Morgen fällt die erste Stunde aus. Wenn du mit dem Bus kommst, prüfe vorher deine Verbindung.“

Your fictional English-speaking visitor asks: What do I need to know?

Give the important information in simple English. Do not translate every word. Then add one imaginary sentence: If I missed the message, I would …

Safe media and AI use

Use only fictional profiles in course tasks. Do not share private social-media data. Audio or video recordings are voluntary and private unless you and your teacher clearly decide otherwise. Do not upload classmates' recordings without permission and do not send them to external AI tools without clear consent.

AI can give hints, but check the language level, facts and feedback. Your own speaking and writing remain your work.

Can-do check

  1. □ I can build if + simple past, would + base verb.
  2. □ I can say one wish with I wish ….
  3. □ I can give an opinion and a reason.
  4. □ I can understand the main idea of a short clear explanation.
  5. □ I can find and repair a common Conditional-II error.

If you tick only one or two boxes, return to The core pattern and the first video. If you tick three or more, continue with the transfer tasks.
