E8 E - Create and audit an English 8 aiMOOC

You will create a small English aiMOOC for Year 8 and then audit it. Your course should help real learners understand, try, speak, write, reflect and improve. Keep the language clear and natural. Use English first. If you get stuck, use this support ladder:

  1. Context: Look at the situation, image or example.
  2. Try: Give it a first attempt in English.
  3. Ask: Ask a partner or teacher a focused question.
  4. Hint: Use sentence starters, key words or captions.
  5. German help if needed: Use short German support, not a full translation.

Media start: listen for the big idea. Watch only 0:00–2:30 first. Do not stop for every unknown word.

Quick response: What is changing about social media? Give one idea from the video and one question you still have.

I-can goals

By the end, you can say:

  1. I can create a short aiMOOC for an E8 topic with a clear learning path.
  2. I can use listening, reading, speaking, writing and mediation in one course.
  3. I can use the passive voice in my own sentences.
  4. I can report statements, questions and commands with suitable backshift.
  5. I can recognise the meaning of the past perfect progressive.
  6. I can check media, feedback, copyright and privacy.
  7. I can improve a draft after feedback without letting AI replace my own work.

What you already know

Think for one minute.

  1. What makes an online learning page easy to use?
  2. Which English skill is easiest for you: listening, reading, speaking or writing?
  3. What should never be published about a classmate without permission?

Compare your ideas with a partner. Use: I think ... because ... / I agree partly, but ... / One risk could be ...

Your project: build a mini aiMOOC

Choose one age-appropriate E8 topic, for example Media literacy, School life, Environment, Travel, Young people and technology or English-speaking cultures. Avoid stereotypes and private real-life profiles.

Your mini aiMOOC should have a simple path:

Step What learners do Keep it E8-E
1 Media hook Short, meaningful, active viewing or listening
2 I-can goal Clear action, not vague knowledge
3 Input Short authentic-style text or media
4 Try Speaking, writing or mediation
5 Language focus Grammar or vocabulary in context
6 Feedback A clear next step for improvement
7 Transfer Use the skill in a new situation

Listening and viewing

Use media for a purpose, not as decoration. At E-level, learners can handle natural speech when the task is focused and support is available.

First viewing: Listen for the main idea.

Second viewing: Note three key words and one example.

Third viewing only if needed: Use English captions or pause at difficult points.

Mini-task: Create two listening questions for your own aiMOOC:

  1. one gist question;
  2. one detail question.

Then check: Can a learner answer without understanding every word?

Reading: a model mini-course plan

Read this fictional project note.

Ava and Jay are building a mini aiMOOC called “Smart Sharing Online”. Their first draft was too long, so the text was shortened and split into small sections. A short video was added at the start. Ava said that learners needed a clear reason to watch it. Jay asked whether the questions were easy enough to understand. Their teacher told them to use fictional names and to remove personal details. The media files were checked before they were embedded. By the end of the lesson, the pair had been testing the course for twenty minutes before they noticed that one task had no useful feedback. They changed it so that learners could see what to improve next.

Read for meaning:

  1. Why was the first draft changed?
  2. What privacy decision did the group make?
  3. What feedback problem did they find?

Language detective: Find one passive form, one reported statement, one reported question and one reported command.

Context vocabulary

Use these words in your project only when they help the learner.

Word Simple meaning Useful phrase
audience the people your course is for know your audience
gist the main idea listen for gist
source where information or media comes from check the source
license rules for reusing a work check the license
privacy control of personal information protect privacy
feedback information that helps you improve act on feedback
revise improve a draft revise your text
bias an unfair or one-sided tendency check for bias

Pronunciation: clarity before accent

Your goal is understandable English, not accent-free English.

Practise these chunks aloud:

The course was checked before it was shared.

She asked whether the task was clear.

He told us to remove the private details.

Focus on word stress and sentence rhythm. Record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless you have clearly agreed to share them.

Speaking

Work with a partner. You have 90 seconds to pitch your mini aiMOOC.

Use this structure:

  1. Topic and audience: Our mini aiMOOC is about ...
  2. Learning goal: Learners will be able to ...
  3. Media choice: We chose ... because ...
  4. Challenge: One possible problem is ...
  5. Response: We would solve it by ...

Then react spontaneously to one partner question. Useful phrases: That is a good point. / I had not thought about that. / I would change ... / I disagree because ...

Writing

Write a 120–160 word project description for your mini aiMOOC.

Include:

  1. a clear topic and audience;
  2. one media activity;
  3. one productive language task;
  4. one sentence in the passive;
  5. one reported statement, question or command;
  6. one privacy or copyright decision.

Revision pass 1: meaning. Is your message clear?

Revision pass 2: structure. Does each paragraph have one job?

Revision pass 3: language. Check verbs, connectors and repeated words.

Do not replace your text with an AI-generated text. If you use AI for support, check its level, facts and feedback, and keep the final decisions and wording your own.

Mediation

Mediation means passing on the important meaning for another person. It is not a word-for-word translation.

School note:

Audioaufnahmen für die Lernaufgabe bleiben grundsätzlich privat. Veröffentliche keine Namen, Bilder oder Social-Media-Daten anderer Schülerinnen und Schüler ohne klare Erlaubnis. Nutze Medien nur, wenn Quelle und Nutzungsrechte geklärt sind.

Task: An English-speaking exchange student asks what the class rules are. Explain the three most important points in 3–4 English sentences. Keep the meaning, but do not translate every word.

Functional grammar

Passive voice: use it productively

Use the passive when the action or result is more important than the person who does it.

Active: The team checks the links.

Passive: The links are checked by the team.

Past: The media were checked before publication.

Future: The final version will be shared in class.

Try: Rewrite these ideas in the passive.

  1. The group edits the text.
  2. The teacher checked the task.
  3. The class will test the course.

Hint: form of be + past participle.

Reported speech: statements, questions and commands

At E-level, use reported speech to show what someone said earlier.

Direct speech Reported speech
“The task is clear.” She said that the task was clear.
“Did you check the source?” He asked whether I had checked the source.
“Why did you choose this video?” She asked why we had chosen that video.
“Remove the real name.” The teacher told us to remove the real name.

Backshift often moves the tense one step into the past when you report an earlier situation. Keep the word order of a statement in reported questions.

Try: Report one statement, one question and one command from your project meeting.

Past perfect progressive: recognise it

They had been testing the course for twenty minutes before they found the problem.

At E-level, you only need to recognise the meaning here: an activity continued for some time before another past event. You do not need to produce this form in your project.

Media literacy, copyright and privacy

For this faster video, use only a short section chosen by your teacher. Watch for the idea that media use also involves rules and responsibilities. Do not try to understand every detail.

Media check before embedding:

  1. Is the source trustworthy enough for the learning goal?
  2. Is the content suitable for Year 8?
  3. Do you know who created the media?
  4. Is reuse or embedding allowed?
  5. Have you recorded the source and license where needed?
  6. Are you avoiding private personal data?

Wikimedia Commons can be useful for openly licensed media, but always check the individual file page and its license conditions.

Privacy rule: Use fictional profiles. Do not include private social-media data, private messages, real usernames, addresses or other unnecessary personal information. Audio and video recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless sharing has been clearly agreed. Do not upload learner work to external AI services without a clear, approved reason and permission.

Feedback that helps

Useful feedback is short, specific and actionable.

Weak feedback: Good job.

Better feedback: Your topic is clear. Add one listening detail question so the video has a stronger learning purpose.

Use this pattern:

What works → what to change → one next step

Error analysis

When something does not work, name the problem before fixing it.

Problem Example Better next step
Level too high Long abstract paragraph Shorten sentences and explain only key words
Media is passive Watch a video with no task Add gist, detail and transfer questions
Feedback is vague “Wrong” Show the error type and one correction hint
Grammar is isolated Ten random passive sentences Use the passive inside the project context
Privacy risk Real classmate profile Replace it with a fictional profile

The E8-E audit

Score each point with Yes / Not yet / Evidence.

Audit point Question
Target language Is the course mainly in clear English, with German help only when needed?
Level Are text length, pace, vocabulary and task load realistic for E8-E?
Listening Is there a focused listening or viewing task with support?
Reading Is there a manageable text with a real purpose?
Speaking Do learners react, explain or discuss instead of only reading aloud?
Writing Do learners plan, write and revise a structured text?
Mediation Do learners pass on key meaning instead of translating everything?
Grammar Is grammar functional and matched to E-level?
Media Does every medium do a learning job?
Feedback Can learners see what to improve next?
Copyright Are source, creator and reuse conditions checked where needed?
Privacy Are profiles fictional and recordings or personal data protected?
AI Are AI level, facts and feedback checked without replacing learner work?

Transfer

Imagine your mini aiMOOC will be used by another Year 8 class you do not know.

Change one part so it works without your spoken explanation. Then explain:

What did you change? Why will it help a new learner?

Can-do check

Before you finish, mark what you can do independently.

  1. □ I can create a clear mini aiMOOC path.
  2. □ I can choose media for a learning purpose.
  3. □ I can use productive passive forms.
  4. □ I can report statements, questions and commands.
  5. □ I can recognise the past perfect progressive.
  6. □ I can give specific feedback.
  7. □ I can check copyright and privacy risks.
  8. □ I can revise my work after an audit.

Next course: Improve and publish an English aiMOOC

Offene Aufgaben

Leicht

  1. Media hook: Choose one suitable image or short video for an E8 topic and write one gist question for it.
  2. I-can statement: Turn a vague goal such as “learn about media” into one clear I-can statement.
  3. Privacy check: Replace all real personal details in a sample learner profile with fictional information.
  4. Feedback sentence: Improve the comment “Good job” so it names one strength and one next step.

Standard

  1. Mini reading: Write a 120-word E8 reading text with one passive form and three context clues for useful vocabulary.
  2. Listening task: Design a two-pass listening task with one gist and two detail questions.
  3. Reported speech: Write a short project meeting with one statement, one question and one command, then report all three.
  4. Mediation task: Create a short German school notice and an English mediation task that asks for key meaning, not full translation.

Schwer

  1. Mini aiMOOC: Build a compact E8-E mini aiMOOC with media, input, practice, feedback and transfer.
  2. Peer audit: Audit a partner course with all twelve audit points and justify three suggested changes.
  3. Media critique: Compare two possible media sources for the same topic and explain which learning purpose each one can serve without ranking the sources overall.
  4. Revision log: Document three changes from draft to final version and explain what evidence or feedback caused each change.

Lernkontrolle

  1. Learning path analysis: Explain why a course with “media → task → feedback → transfer” may support learning better than a page that only presents information.
  2. Level adaptation: A text is accurate but too difficult for E8-E. Describe three changes that keep the main idea while improving accessibility.
  3. Grammar in context: Rewrite a short project update so that one passive form and one reported question are used for a clear communicative reason.
  4. Privacy scenario: A group wants to publish a real classmate profile and an audio recording. Identify the risks and design a safer alternative.
  5. Media purpose: Explain how the same video could be used badly or well depending on the task around it.
  6. Feedback transfer: Turn vague feedback on a draft into a three-part response: what works, what to change and the next step.

Lernnachweis

For a successful learning record, show evidence that you can:

  1. create a short E8-E aiMOOC with a clear learning path;
  2. use listening or viewing, reading, speaking, writing and mediation meaningfully;
  3. use the passive productively and reported speech with statements, questions and commands;
  4. recognise the meaning of the past perfect progressive;
  5. choose media for an active learning purpose;
  6. give specific, usable feedback;
  7. audit target language, level, media, copyright, privacy and AI use;
  8. revise your own work and explain your decisions.

The learning record itself should not contain external embeds, private recordings or unnecessary personal data.
