E7 M - Past progressive and simple past in stories

Einleitung

Goal: Tell a short story clearly. Use the past progressive for the background and the simple past for the event that moves the story on.

Level: English as a first foreign language, Year 7, Baden-Württemberg, M-level.

Look first. Imagine this hallway after school. What was happening? What happened next?

Try: Students were leaving the building when a phone rang.

Hint: The long/background action is often in the past progressive. The shorter event is often in the simple past.

Deutsch nur bei Bedarf: Hintergrund/Verlauf → past progressive. Ereignis/Schritt in der Handlung → simple past.

I can ...

  1. I can describe what was happening in the background.
  2. I can tell what happened next.
  3. I can connect both tenses with when and while.
  4. I can write and tell a short story with a clear beginning, event and ending.
  5. I can improve my story after feedback.

What you already know

You already know many simple-past forms such as went, saw, heard, found, called and regular forms such as walked or looked.

Quick start: Complete: Yesterday I ___ to school and I ___ my friend. Then add one background sentence: At 8 o'clock, I was ___.

Notice: two jobs in a story

Background or event?

Read the mini-story:

It was raining. Mia was cycling home and people were hurrying along the street. Suddenly, a dog ran across the road. Mia stopped and called its owner.

Notice:

  1. was cycling / were hurrying = actions in progress, the background.
  2. ran / stopped / called = completed events, the story moves forward.

Try with the picture: Say one background sentence and one event sentence.

Form

Job Form Example
Background / action in progress was/were + verb-ing I was waiting.
Finished event simple past The bus arrived.

When + event: I was waiting when the bus arrived.

While + background: While I was waiting, my friend was texting me.

Hint: Do not choose the tense only because of a signal word. Ask: Is this background in progress, or a completed event?

Small grammar check

Past progressive: I/he/she/it was + -ing; you/we/they were + -ing.

Simple past: regular verbs often end in -ed; irregular verbs use forms such as go → went, see → saw, hear → heard.

Negative: I wasn't listening. / I didn't hear the bell.

Question: What were you doing? / What happened?

Optional E-look ahead

Only notice this form: When we arrived, the film had already started. The past perfect can show that one past event happened earlier. You do not need it for the main tasks in this course.

Listening and Viewing

Video 1: notice the contrast

Watch the BBC Learning English video once for the main idea. Watch again and listen for one past-progressive sentence and one simple-past sentence.

Task: Pause after an example. Explain in English: This is background because ... or This is the event because ...

Need help? Use: It was in progress. / It finished. / It interrupted the other action.

Video 2: story logic

Listen for the contrast between a longer background action and a shorter event. You do not need to understand every word.

Mini-transfer: Change the example to your own safe, fictional situation: I was ... when ...

Reading

A short story: The missing bag

Leo was waiting outside the sports hall. His friends were talking near the door, and a teacher was locking a classroom. Leo was checking his messages when he noticed a blue bag under a bench. He picked it up and looked inside. There was a name tag, so he took the bag to the school office. A few minutes later, a student came in and smiled. She was looking for the bag.

Read for meaning first. What is the problem? How is it solved?

Read again. Find the background actions and the events that move the story forward.

Hint: Underline was/were + -ing once. Circle simple-past verbs.

Vocabulary in context

Story words

Function Useful language
Set the scene one afternoon, after school, at that moment
Background was waiting, were talking, was raining
New event suddenly, then, a moment later
Link actions when, while
End in the end, finally

Try: Use any three expressions to retell The missing bag in 30–45 seconds.

Pronunciation

Make the past clear

For regular simple-past verbs, the -ed ending can sound different: looked ends with /t/, played with /d/, wanted with /ɪd/.

Try aloud: I was walking when I looked back. Keep the important words clear. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.

Private practice: Recording yourself is optional. Keep recordings private unless you choose otherwise.

Speaking

Picture story: partner task

Partner A starts with two background sentences. Partner B adds one event. Continue for six sentences.

Use: While ... was/were ..., ... ... was/were ... when ... Suddenly, ... Then ...

React and ask: Really? What happened next? – Why did that happen? – What was ... doing?

Feedback: Your partner gives one star and one next step: The background was clear. / Try one more past-progressive sentence.

Writing

Build a short story

Write about 90–120 words.

Plan:

  1. Set the scene with 2–3 background actions.
  2. Add one clear event.
  3. Continue with 2–4 simple-past actions.
  4. Finish the story.

Starter: It was late afternoon. I was ... when ...

Check: Did you use both tenses for a reason, not just to show the form?

Feedback and improve

Read your story once for meaning. Then check only these points:

  1. Is the background clear?
  2. Does the main event stand out?
  3. Is was/were + -ing formed correctly?
  4. Are the simple-past forms correct?
  5. Can the reader follow the order?

Improve two sentences, then read the story again.

AI note: If you use AI for feedback, check whether the language still fits your level and whether the feedback is correct. Keep your own ideas and wording; do not replace your text with an AI text. Do not upload private data.

Mediation mini-task

A German-speaking classmate asks what happened in The missing bag. Explain the key information in simple German in 3–4 sentences. Do not translate every sentence.

Self-check

Mark: yes / almost / not yet.

  1. I can explain the job of the past progressive.
  2. I can explain the job of the simple past in a story.
  3. I can use when and while.
  4. I can tell a short story with background and events.
  5. I can use feedback to improve my text.

Use again: Retell your story one day later without reading it. Change one detail and keep the tense logic.
