E7 G - Understand a short video with visual support

Mini description: Use picture, action, gestures and familiar English to understand a short video. First watch. Then listen for key words. Use help only when you need it.

Target group: English as first foreign language, Klasse 7, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Your learning path: Notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.

Media start: Watch first

Watch first. No transcript yet.

This is a short British Council | English video for beginners. Watch once without stopping.

First try: What can you understand from the pictures, people and actions?

  1. Who? How many people do you notice?
  2. Where? What places or situations do you see?
  3. Action: What are people doing?
  4. Mood: Do they look happy, surprised, worried or calm?

Hint 1: Do not try to understand every word.

Hint 2: Look at faces, hands, objects and movement.

Deutsch nur wenn nötig: Nutze zuerst das Bild. Suche dann nach wenigen bekannten Wörtern.

I can

At the end, you can say:

  1. I can use the picture to understand.
  2. I can notice actions and gestures.
  3. I can catch familiar words and short chunks.
  4. I can understand the main idea of a short video.
  5. I can give a short answer in English.

What you already know

You already know useful classroom English and everyday chunks such as hello, sorry, look, come on, I like ..., This is ... and Where are you?

Try: Say three English words you often hear in videos.

Need help? Think of greetings, places, people, food, school or hobbies.

Look before you listen

Before you listen closely, use the visual clues.

Notice:

  1. face
  2. hands
  3. place
  4. objects
  5. movement

A smile can help you guess a positive mood. A pointing hand can show a place or object. A person running, eating or opening a door gives you information even before you understand the words.

Important: A gesture can support meaning, but gestures are not always understood in exactly the same way everywhere. Use the whole situation, not one gesture alone.

Viewing 1: Get the main idea

Watch again.

Do not pause.

Choose one sentence in your head:

It is about ...

Possible starters:

  1. It is about two people.
  2. It is about meeting someone.
  3. It is about an everyday situation.
  4. The people have a small problem.

Direct feedback: If you can choose one main idea, your first viewing worked. You do not need every word.

Viewing 2: Picture + action + words

Now watch again. Pause only once or twice.

Use this order:

  1. Picture: What do you see?
  2. Action: What happens?
  3. Gesture: What do hands and faces show?
  4. Words: Which familiar words do you hear?
  5. Guess: What probably happens next?

English first. Try before help.

Hint: Listen for short chunks, not single difficult words.

Useful chunks:

I'm sorry. Look! This is ... Where are you going? Nice to meet you.

German help if needed: Höre auf bekannte Wortgruppen. Sie helfen dir mehr als ein einzelnes unbekanntes Wort.

Visual clues

A visual clue is something you can see that helps you understand.

Examples: a face, a gesture, an object, a sign, a place or an action.

Mini transfer: Imagine a person points at a bus and says, “There it is!” You may not know every word, but the pointing gesture and the bus help you understand the message.

Gesture and body language

Gestures can show:

  1. attention
  2. direction
  3. agreement
  4. surprise
  5. a wish to speak

Do not guess a person's whole character from one gesture. Use gesture only as one clue together with language and context.

Listening: catch key words

Listen for words you already know.

Good key words are often:

  1. names
  2. places
  3. actions
  4. numbers
  5. time words
  6. repeated words

Try: Write only three words after one viewing.

Example: park – taxi – party

Feedback: Three useful words can be enough to understand the situation.

Transcript comes later

First watch without a transcript. Then watch again with English captions or use the transcript on the learning page if you need it.

Rule: Try → context → hint → transcript.

Do not begin with a full German translation.

The British Council series Starting Out is designed for A1–A2 learners and uses everyday situations, basic language and transcripts for support.

British Council: Starting Out

Reading after viewing

Read these short sentences only after your first viewing:

Two people meet. Something unexpected happens. They talk to each other. The pictures help you understand.

Try: Which sentence matches the video best?

Hint: Look again at the people and their actions.

Vocabulary in context

Learn only a few useful words.

Word Easy meaning Use it
gesture a movement with your hand or body The gesture helps me.
clue something that helps you understand The picture is a clue.
action something a person does I watch the action.
main idea the most important message I understand the main idea.
repeat hear or watch again I repeat the short part.
speaker a person who talks There are two speakers.

Pronunciation

Speak clearly. You do not need to sound like a native speaker.

Try these chunks slowly:

I can see ... I think ... He is ... She is ... They are ... Maybe ...

Focus on being understandable.

Mini rhythm: I CAN see it. – stress the important word.

Speaking

Use a short speaking frame:

I can see ... The person is ... I think they are ... Maybe the video is about ...

Model: I can see two people. They are talking. I think they are meeting.

Try: Say two or three connected sentences.

Optional recording: You may record yourself privately. Recording is voluntary. Do not upload a recording unless your teacher has asked for it and the school rules allow it.

Writing

Write three short sentences.

Writing frame:

I can see ... The people are ... I think ...

Word bank: talking – walking – looking – happy – surprised – outside – inside – friend – problem

Feedback check: Do your sentences match the picture and action?

Grammar in action

Use grammar only to help you communicate.

For actions happening now:

He is running. She is looking. They are talking.

For a simple description:

This is a park. They are friends.

You do not need passive voice or reported speech here.

Help ladder

Use only as much help as you need.

  1. Step 1 – Look: Use picture and action.
  2. Step 2 – Listen: Catch familiar words.
  3. Step 3 – Replay: Watch one short part again.
  4. Step 4 – Hint: Use the word bank or sentence starters.
  5. Step 5 – English transcript: Read after your own listening attempt.
  6. Step 6 – German help: Use a short German explanation only if the meaning is still unclear.

Feedback and improve

After one task, ask yourself:

What helped me most?

  1. picture
  2. gesture
  3. action
  4. familiar words
  5. replay
  6. captions

Then watch one short part again and use your best strategy.

Use again: Try the same strategy in another short English video.

Mini transfer

Imagine a new video:

A girl stands at a bus stop. She looks at her phone. A bus arrives. She smiles and waves.

You hear only: “There it is!”

What helps you understand?

The bus, the smile, the wave and the situation all give you context.

Your turn: Explain the scene in two English sentences.

Safe and smart media use

Use school-approved or freely accessible learning media.

Profiles in tasks should be fictional. Do not use private social-media data.

Your own audio or video recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless there is a clear school task and permission to share them.

Do not send your work to an external AI tool without permission. If you use AI feedback in school, check whether the feedback fits your language level. Your own text stays your text.

Can-do check

Say yes, almost or not yet.

  1. I can understand the main idea of a short video.
  2. I can use picture and action as clues.
  3. I can notice useful gestures.
  4. I can catch familiar chunks.
  5. I can give a short English response.

If “not yet”: Watch a shorter part. Use fewer words. Use the help ladder.

Next course

When this feels easy, continue with:

E7 G - Understand details in a short video

There you focus more on key details such as who, where, when and what happens next.

Curriculum connection

This aiMOOC supports Hör-/Hörsehverstehen in English. For Baden-Württemberg, visual support, familiarity with the topic, vocabulary, speaking speed and number of speakers are important factors for the difficulty of a listening/viewing text.

Bildungspläne Baden-Württemberg

For G-level learning, the course therefore uses a short video, clear everyday language, few speakers, repeated chunks, picture support and staged help.
