E7 G - Understand a short English story
E7 G - Understand a short English story
Mini-Beschreibung: Understand a short English story. Find the characters, place, main events and the conflict. Then tell the story in simple English.
Zielgruppe: Klasse 7, G-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg.
Learning path: Notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.
Einleitung
In this aiMOOC, you work with one short story. The English is short and clear. You first listen, then read. You use pictures, a storyboard, a word bank and sentence starters.
English first: Try in English first. Use the context and the media. Then use a hint. German help comes only if you still need it.
Wichtig: Du musst nicht jedes Wort verstehen. Suche zuerst: Who? Where? What happened? What is the problem?
I can ...
| I can ... | Check |
|---|---|
| name the main characters | □ |
| say where the story happens | □ |
| find three main events | □ |
| explain the conflict in one or two simple sentences | □ |
| retell the story with sentence starters | □ |
Before you start: What do you know?
Look at the picture.
Try in English:
- Where are the people?
- What can happen after school?
- What objects can students lose?
Word help: school – corridor – library – bag – book – bus
Deutsch nur wenn nötig: corridor = Flur, library = Bibliothek.

Listening and Viewing
First try: Watch or listen once without reading a transcript. The video shows a simple school situation.
- Who can you see?
- Where are they?
- What is the problem?
- Which words do you understand?
Hint: Do not stop after every word. Listen for names, places and key actions.
Feedback: If you can answer two questions, continue. If not, listen again.
Audio-first story task
Ask your teacher or a partner to read the story below slowly to moderately. Do not read the text yet. Listen two times.
Listening 1: Who is in the story?
Listening 2: What object is missing? Where was it?
Hint: Listen for Mia, Ben, sketchbook, library and bus.
Deutsch nur wenn nötig: Es reicht, beim ersten Hören die Hauptidee zu verstehen.
Reading: The red sketchbook

Now read.
After the last lesson, Mia waited in the school corridor. She needed her red sketchbook for art club, but it was not in her bag. She looked under a bench and in her locker.
Ben came from the library.
“Are you looking for this?” he asked. He held a red sketchbook.
Mia felt angry. “Why did you take it?”
“I didn’t,” Ben said. “I found it on a table in the library. I wanted to give it back.”
Mia remembered lunch. She had shown a drawing to Sara in the library. She had left the sketchbook there.
The bus arrived outside. Mia smiled.
“Sorry, Ben. Thanks for bringing it.”
“No problem,” Ben said. “Next time, write your name inside.”
They ran to the bus together.
First understanding
Try without help.
- Characters: Who are the two important people?
- Setting: Where does most of the story happen?
- Main event: What is missing?
- Conflict: Why is Mia angry?
- Ending: What does Mia understand?
Hint: Find the sentence with “Why did you take it?”
Deutsch nur wenn nötig: Konflikt = Problem oder Missverständnis in der Geschichte.
Feedback: A strong short answer names Mia and Ben, the school, the missing sketchbook and the misunderstanding.
Storyboard
Use the pictures in your head. Match one short sentence to each scene.
| Scene | Picture in your head | Useful sentence |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mia in the corridor | Mia cannot find her red sketchbook. |
| 2 | Ben comes from the library | Ben has the sketchbook. |
| 3 | Mia is angry | Mia thinks Ben took it. |
| 4 | Mia remembers lunch | She left it in the library. |
| 5 | The bus arrives | Mia says sorry and thanks Ben. |
Mini-transfer: Cover the table. Retell the five scenes with First – Then – But – Finally.
Vocabulary in context
Learn only a few key words.
| Word or chunk | Meaning from the story | Your example |
|---|---|---|
| sketchbook | a book for drawings | My sketchbook is in my bag. |
| look for | try to find | I look for my keys. |
| feel angry | be angry | She feels angry. |
| give it back | return it | Please give it back. |
| remember | think of something from before | I remember the library. |
| leave something | forget something in a place | I left my book at school. |
Try: Choose three chunks and make three short sentences.
Hint: Copy the sentence pattern first. Then change one word.
Pronunciation
Say these chunks slowly, then naturally:
- look for it
- give it back
- I found it
- I’m sorry
- Thanks for bringing it
Focus on clear words and sentence rhythm. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.
Private practice: You may record yourself on your own device. Recording is voluntary. Keep it private unless you choose to share it with your teacher.
Speaking
Work with a partner.
A: What happened?
B: Mia lost her sketchbook.
A: Where was it?
B: It was in the library.
A: What was the conflict?
B: Mia thought Ben took it.
A: How did the story end?
B: Mia remembered the truth and said sorry.
Sentence starters:
- First, ...
- Then, ...
- Mia thought ...
- But Ben ...
- Finally, ...
Feedback check: Did you use at least three connected sentences? If not, use the sentence starters and try again.
Writing
Write five connected sentences about the story.
Writing frame:
First, Mia ____________________.
Then, Ben ____________________.
Mia thought ____________________.
But ____________________.
Finally, ____________________.
Word bank: sketchbook – corridor – library – found – angry – remembered – sorry
Improve: Check capital letters, full stops and past verbs.
Functional grammar: Past simple
The story mostly uses the past simple because it tells finished events.
Models:
- Mia waited in the corridor.
- Ben came from the library.
- Mia felt angry.
- Ben found the sketchbook.
- Mia smiled.
Try: Change the verbs.
Today Mia waits. → Yesterday Mia waited.
Today Ben comes. → Yesterday Ben came.
Today Mia feels angry. → Yesterday Mia felt angry.
E-Ausblick – nur kontrolliert: “Mia had left the sketchbook in the library” can show that this happened before another past event. You do not need to use the past perfect in your own text yet.
Optional mediation
A German-speaking classmate did not understand the story. Explain only the important information in German in two or three sentences.
Do not translate every sentence. Say who the story is about, what the problem is and how it ends.
More listening: simple dialogue
First listen: What are the two speakers planning?
Second listen: Write down two words or phrases you hear.
Then use the transcript only if you still need help.
Mini-transfer: Which listening strategy also helped you with “The red sketchbook”?
Smart and safe media use
- Use subtitles or a transcript after a first listening attempt.
- Use AI only for hints, word help or feedback that you check yourself.
- Do not let AI replace your own text.
- Check if AI language is really at your level.
- Never upload private recordings, names or social-media data without permission.
- Keep fictional profiles fictional.
- Different accents are normal. Clear communication is the goal.
