E7 G - Translation tools – Check before you copy

Mini-Beschreibung: Vergleiche eigene einfache Sätze mit automatisch übersetzten Varianten und erkenne, warum Tool-Ausgaben geprüft werden müssen.

Zielgruppe: Klasse 7, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Learning path: Notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.

Grundidee: English first. Try first. Nutze Kontext und Medien. Lies dann einen Hint. Deutsche Hilfe kommt nur, wenn Du sie brauchst. Eine automatische Vollübersetzung ersetzt Deinen eigenen Text nicht.

Media start: Can you trust one click?

Look at the picture. Do not translate everything.

Try: Say three English words you can see or expect in a translation tool: language – text – translate.

Think: A tool can give an answer very fast. But is the answer right for your situation?

Hint: One word can have more than one meaning.

German help: Ein Übersetzungstool liefert einen Vorschlag. Du prüfst, ob der Vorschlag zum Kontext passt.

I can …

  1. I can write a short English sentence before I use a tool.
  2. I can compare my sentence with a tool output.
  3. I can use context to check the meaning.
  4. I can find small but important words such as not, can, tomorrow and before.
  5. I can improve a sentence without copying a full tool answer.
  6. I can keep private data out of translation and AI tools.

What you already know

You already know short sentence patterns such as:

Chunk Example
I like … I like this song.
I want to … I want to buy a ticket.
Yesterday I … Yesterday I visited my cousin.
Can you …? Can you help me?
because … I stayed home because I was tired.

Try first: Make one new sentence with one chunk. Keep it short.

Notice: same word, different meaning

Read the two mini-scenes.

Scene A: Mia says: The match was exciting. Our team won 3–2.

Scene B: Leo says: I need a match to light the candle.

The word match is the same. The meaning is different.

Context Meaning Useful German help
team, won, 3–2 a sports game Spiel
light, candle a small stick that makes fire Streichholz

Feedback: A tool needs context. You need context too. Never check only one word.

Understand: What can a translation tool do?

A translation tool can suggest words and sentences in another language. Modern tools use large amounts of language data and patterns to choose likely translations. The output can be useful, but it can still be wrong, too formal, too informal or wrong for the situation.

Important: A fast answer is not the same as a checked answer.

Rule: Write → compare → check → improve. Do not start with copy and paste.

The 4-check routine

Check Simple question
Meaning Does it fit the situation?
Small words Are not, can, must, before, after or time words correct?
Details Are names, numbers and places still correct?
My English Can I explain or use the final sentence myself?

Mini-model:

Original idea: I can’t come today because I’m ill.

Tool output: I cannot come today because I am sick.

Check: The meaning is the same. The tool version is a little more formal. Both are possible. Keep the version you understand and can use.

Try: Check meaning with context

Context 1: Jamie is at a lake. I sat on the bank and watched the ducks.

Possible output A: Ich saß auf der Bank und beobachtete die Enten.

Possible output B: Ich saß am Ufer und beobachtete die Enten.

Your job: Which output fits the lake context better?

Hint: Look at lake and ducks.

German help: Hier ist bank das Ufer.

Feedback: Output B fits the context better.

Try again: Check the small words

Read:

Original: Please don’t close the window.

Tool version: Bitte schließe das Fenster.

What is missing?

Hint: Find the small word with a negative meaning.

German help: don’t bedeutet hier nicht.

Feedback: The tool version changes the message. A small word can change the whole meaning.

Listening and viewing

First listening: Watch only a short part of the BBC Learning English video. Do not switch on a transcript yet. Listen for the words translation, technology and language.

Second listening: Watch the same short part again. This time note one idea you understand.

After two tries: Use captions or the transcript if needed.

German help: Du musst nicht jedes Wort verstehen. Finde zuerst das Thema und bekannte Wörter.

Feedback: Listening for key words is a valid strategy. Full translation is not the goal.

Reading: Tool output is a draft

Read this fictional chat. No real profile or private data is used.

Noah: I’m at the sports centre. The bus leaves at 5:20.

Tool output: Ich bin im Sportzentrum. Der Bus fährt um 5:20 Uhr ab.

Check: The place and time are clear. The message works.

Now read:

Noah: I’m not at the sports centre. The bus leaves after 5:20.

Tool output: Ich bin im Sportzentrum. Der Bus fährt um 5:20 Uhr ab.

Your job: Find two important changes.

Feedback: not is missing, and after has become an exact time. The tool output is not safe to copy.

Vocabulary in context

English chunk Simple meaning Example
check the meaning Bedeutung prüfen Check the meaning in the sentence.
tool output Tool-Ausgabe Read the tool output.
fit the context zum Kontext passen Does the word fit the context?
compare vergleichen Compare both sentences.
change ändern Change one word if needed.
keep behalten Keep the sentence you understand.

Try: Use two chunks in one short sentence: I compare the tool output and check the meaning.

Pronunciation: clear is more important than perfect

Say these chunks slowly, then at normal speed:

check the meaning

fit the context

compare the sentences

change one word

Focus: Speak clearly. You do not need to sound like a native speaker.

Pair feedback: Your partner says only: clear, again please or good pace.

Speaking: Ask before you copy

Work with a partner.

Student A: My tool says “light” means “hell”. Is that right?

Student B: What is the full sentence?

Student A: I have a light bag.

Student B: Here, “light” means “not heavy”.

Use these sentence starters:

Function Starter
ask What is the full sentence?
check Does it fit the context?
compare My sentence says …
improve I want to change …
explain Here, the word means …

Mini-transfer: Make a new two-line dialogue with match, bank or light.

Writing: My sentence first

Task: Write three connected sentences about a fictional school afternoon.

Use this frame:

After school, I …

Then I …

I like / don’t like it because …

Now use a teacher-approved dictionary or translation tool for one word or one short chunk only. Compare the suggestion with your own sentence.

Word bank: meet – practise – homework – sports centre – library – tired – fun – because

Feedback check: Can you explain every word in your final version? If not, simplify it.

Mediation: Give the key message, not every word

A fictional German notice says:

Der Bus zum Schwimmbad fährt heute erst um 16:10 Uhr. Treffpunkt ist vor der Schule.

Your English-speaking friend asks: When and where do we meet?

Try in English first: Give only the key information.

Hint: Start with We meet …

Possible answer: We meet in front of the school. The bus leaves at 4:10 pm.

German help: Bei Sprachmittlung überträgst Du die wichtige Information sinngemäß. Du musst nicht Wort für Wort übersetzen.

Functional grammar: Keep time and negatives clear

Use grammar to protect the meaning.

Meaning English pattern Example
negative do not / don’t I don’t need help.
ability can / can’t I can check the sentence.
past event simple past I checked the word yesterday.
reason because I changed it because the context was different.

Try: Change I copy the sentence. into a safer sentence with don’t and because.

Model: I don’t copy the sentence because I want to check it first.

Safe and fair tool use

Do not enter private information such as real full names, addresses, passwords, private chats or private photos into external tools.

Use fictional profiles for practice. Recordings are voluntary and private. Do not upload recordings unless your teacher has clearly planned and approved this.

A translation or AI tool can help you check language. It should not replace your own thinking or your own school text. If a tool gives feedback, check whether the level fits Klasse 7 and whether you understand the change.

Class rule: My idea first. Tool second. Check third.

Optional media: How machine translation works

This video goes deeper and is optional. It is not needed for the G-level tasks.

Viewing task: Find one picture or diagram that shows how a machine works with language. You do not need to understand the technical details.

Quick self-check

Can-do Yes Not yet
I write a short sentence before using a tool. ☐ ☐
I check context and small words. ☐ ☐
I can explain my final sentence. ☐ ☐
I keep private data out of tools. ☐ ☐
I improve one sentence after feedback. ☐ ☐

Use again: Take one sentence from your writing task. Check it with the 4-check routine and improve only what is needed.

Follow-up course

Next step: Dictionaries and word choice – Find the meaning that fits. You practise how to choose the right meaning from a dictionary entry without translating a whole text.

  3. Mediation card: Formuliere aus einem kurzen deutschen Schulhinweis zwei englische Sätze mit den wichtigsten Informationen.
  4. Listening log: Nutze den BBC-Clip zweimal. Notiere zuerst nur drei Schlüsselwörter und danach eine verstandene Hauptidee. Prüfe erst dann Untertitel.

Schwer

  1. Translation detective: Erfinde drei plausible, aber fehlerhafte Tool-Ausgaben.

  4. Du kannst eine Änderung in einfachen Worten begründen.
  5. Du kannst wichtige Informationen sinngemäß vermitteln, ohne alles Wort für Wort zu übersetzen.
