E7 G - Sentence stress and key words
E7 G - Sentence stress and key words
Mini-Beschreibung: Listen for sentence stress. Find the key words. Use stress to make important information clear.
Level: English as a first foreign language, Klasse 7, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Listen first. What do you notice when one word sounds stronger?
I can ...
- I can hear some stressed key words in a short sentence.
- I can mark the most important word in a sentence.
- I can use sentence stress to make my message clearer.
- I can try again after short feedback.
What you already know
You know short English sentences about school, friends, hobbies and everyday life.
You already know that one syllable in a word can be stronger. Now you look at a whole sentence.
Try: Say important. Then say: This is important.
Hint: Which word carries the message?
Deutsch-Hilfe, wenn nötig: Höre zuerst auf das Wort, das die wichtigste Information trägt.
Notice → understand → try
Listening and viewing: hear the beat
Watch only the first part first. Do not read subtitles yet.
First try: Listen for strong words. Tap once when you hear one.
Second try: Watch again. Now use subtitles if you need them.
Hint: You do not need every word. Listen for the message words.
Deutsch-Hilfe, wenn nötig: Beim ersten Hören geht es nur um Schlüsselwörter. Untertitel kommen erst beim zweiten Versuch.
A second listening model
This video shows that stress can move to a different word and change the focus.
Try: Choose one short sentence from the video. Say it once. Then stress a different word.
Private practice: You may record yourself, but recording is voluntary. Keep recordings private unless you actively choose to share them.
What is sentence stress?
In English, some words in a sentence sound more prominent than others.
A stressed word can be a little longer, clearer, stronger or have a noticeable pitch movement. Stress is not only loudness.
Usually, words with important meaning get more stress. Small grammar words are often weaker. But a speaker can stress almost any word when it is important for the message.
Example:
I bought the BLUE bag.
The word BLUE is the focus. Maybe not the red bag.
I BOUGHT the blue bag.
Now BOUGHT is the focus. Maybe you did not borrow it.
Rhythm visualisation

The picture shows changing wave size. Real sentence stress is more complex, but a visual beat can help you practise.
| Sentence | Beat | Key words |
|---|---|---|
| I LIKE this SONG. | · ● · ● | LIKE – SONG |
| We PLAY after SCHOOL. | · ● · · ● | PLAY – SCHOOL |
| She needs the BLUE book. | · · · ● · | BLUE |
Try: Tap ●. Speak the small words lightly between the beats.
Hint: Keep the sentence moving. Do not stop after every word.
Key words and small words
| Often stronger | Often weaker |
|---|---|
| nouns: book, bus, music | articles: a, the |
| main verbs: play, need, buy | pronouns: I, she, we |
| adjectives: blue, funny, late | short prepositions: to, at, for |
This is a useful pattern, not a hard rule. The message decides the stress.
Audio focus: three useful words
stress
important
message
Say the three words. Then use them in these short chunks:
Stress the key word.
This is important.
Make the message clear.
Understand → use
Reading: find the key word
Read this short dialogue.
Mia: Are we meeting at THREE?
Leo: No, at FOUR.
Mia: At four in the library?
Leo: No, in the CAFÉ.
Task: Which words correct old information?
Hint: Look for new or different information.
Deutsch-Hilfe, wenn nötig: Wörter mit einer Korrektur oder neuen Information bekommen oft besonders viel Betonung.
Vocabulary in context
| Word | Easy meaning | Chunk |
|---|---|---|
| stress | make a word stand out | stress the word |
| key word | important message word | find the key word |
| beat | rhythm point | tap the beat |
| clear | easy to understand | make it clear |
| focus | the most important part now | change the focus |
Pronunciation: clear before perfect
Your goal is understandable English. You do not need to sound like one special accent.
Use this simple practice cycle:
- Listen.
- Mark the key word.
- Tap the beat.
- Say the sentence.
- Get one small piece of feedback.
- Say it again.

Feedback question: Could your partner hear the key word?
If not, do not speak every word louder. Make the key word more prominent and keep the rest lighter.
Speaking: stress changes focus
Say each sentence two ways.
I want the GREEN pen.
I WANT the green pen.
We meet on FRIDAY.
WE meet on Friday.
Speaking frame:
The key word is ___.
Listen: I mean ___.
I will stress ___.
Partner feedback: “I heard ___ as the key word.”
Writing: mark your message
Write three short sentences about school or free time.
Use this frame:
I need the ___ today.
We meet at ___.
My favourite ___ is ___.
Write the key word in CAPITALS or underline it. Then read your sentence aloud.
Word bank: today – Friday – library – football – music – bus – homework – blue – new – late
Mediation: help a partner
Your partner asks in German: “Warum klingt das Wort anders?”
First try a short English answer:
It is the key word.
The speaker wants this word to stand out.
If your partner still needs help, give one short German explanation. Then return to English.
Functional grammar for meaning
You do not learn new grammar here. You use grammar words differently in speech.
I NEED the book.
I need the BOOK.
The grammar stays the same. The focus changes.
E-Ausblick, optional: Later you may meet more complex verb forms such as the past perfect. You do not practise that tense here. The same stress idea still helps: make the important information stand out.
Communicate → feedback → improve → use again
Mini communication task
Work with a partner.
Student A has this information: The club starts on TUESDAY at FOUR.
Student B says: The club starts on Thursday at five.
Student A corrects two details with clear stress.
Model: No. It starts on TUESDAY at FOUR.
Switch roles with a new sentence.
Direct feedback
After one try, choose only one feedback point.
| Check | Yes / not yet |
|---|---|
| I heard the key word. | □ / □ |
| The small words were lighter. | □ / □ |
| The sentence kept a steady flow. | □ / □ |
| The message was clear. | □ / □ |
Then say the same sentence again.
Safe media and AI use
Use pronunciation tools only when they help you practise.
Do not upload private voice recordings unless you choose to do so and have permission where needed.
If an AI tool gives pronunciation feedback, check whether the feedback fits this lesson. AI feedback can be wrong. Your own speaking and writing should not be replaced by AI.
Mini transfer
Imagine you missed the bus. You say:
I missed the SEVEN o'clock bus.
Now change the key word to create a different focus.
Try:
I missed the seven o'clock bus.
I MISSED the seven o'clock bus.
Ask a partner: What changed in the message?
Self-check: Can do
| I can ... | yes | almost | not yet |
|---|---|---|---|
| hear an important stressed word | □ | □ | □ |
| mark a key word | □ | □ | □ |
| stress a key word clearly | □ | □ | □ |
| improve after feedback | □ | □ | □ |
If you chose “almost” or “not yet”, return to the rhythm table and practise two short sentences again.

Lernnachweis
For a successful learning record, you should show that you can hear, mark and use sentence stress in short familiar sentences.
You should also show that you can explain a simple focus change, react to feedback and improve a second speaking attempt.
A useful learning record can include a marked short dialogue, a rhythm pattern and a short reflection. A recording is optional and should remain private unless you choose otherwise.
