E7 G - Say sorry and explain what happened

Mini-Beschreibung: Say sorry, explain a past event and react to an apology. Du arbeitest mit kurzen englischen Chunks und dem Simple Past. Zielgruppe: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 7, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Einleitung

Sometimes something goes wrong. You are late. You forget a book. You drop something. Then you can say sorry and explain what happened.

Useful chunks: I'm sorry. It was my fault. What happened? I forgot it. I dropped it. That's okay. Don't worry. Thanks for telling me.

In this aiMOOC you first notice useful language, then you try it, use it in a short context, get help, improve your answer and use it again.

Media start: What can you say?

Look at the picture above.

Try first: Say one short sentence in English.

Starter: I'm sorry. I ...

Hint: Use a past verb: forgot, dropped, broke, lost, was, went.

Deutsch-Hilfe nur wenn nötig: Du entschuldigst dich und sagst in einem kurzen Satz, was passiert ist.

I can

At the end, you can say:

  1. I can say sorry.
  2. I can explain what happened.
  3. I can use simple past forms in short sentences.
  4. I can react to an apology.
  5. I can write a short apology message.

What you already know

You already know many useful words:

school – book – bag – phone – bus – friend – teacher – late – help – sorry

You may also know these verbs:

go – went forget – forgot drop – dropped break – broke lose – lost be – was / were

Quick try: Complete one sentence: Yesterday I __________ my book.

Notice and understand

A small accident

Read the short dialogue. The profiles are fictional.

Mia: Hey Sam. My bottle is on the floor.

Sam: I'm sorry. I dropped your bottle.

Mia: What happened?

Sam: I turned around and hit the table. The bottle fell down.

Mia: Oh.

Sam: I picked it up, but the lid broke. It was my fault.

Mia: That's okay. Thanks for telling me.

Sam: I can get a new lid tomorrow.

Mia: Good idea.

Notice: Sam does three things:

  1. He says sorry.
  2. He explains what happened.
  3. He offers a solution.

Listening and viewing: Saying sorry

Watch once. Do not use a transcript first. Listen for one phrase you understand.

First try: Which words or chunks about saying sorry can you hear?

Second try: Watch again. Write down only two useful phrases.

Hint: Listen for short apology phrases. You do not need to understand every word.

Deutsch-Hilfe nur wenn nötig: Höre zuerst nur auf bekannte Wörter. Beim zweiten Durchgang suchst Du zwei Formulierungen für eine Entschuldigung.

Listening and viewing: Simple past

This video helps you notice regular past forms.

Try: Listen for verbs that end in -ed.

Hint: Examples in this course are dropped, turned, picked.

Now watch an example with irregular verbs.

Try: Listen for one irregular past form.

Hint: Irregular verbs do not always end in -ed: go → went, break → broke, forget → forgot.

Reading: What happened?

Text message

Hi Alex, I'm sorry I was late for our project. I missed the bus. Then I walked to school. I arrived ten minutes late. I hope that's okay. See you, Jamie

Try first: What was the problem?

Hint: Look for the sentence after I'm sorry.

Deutsch-Hilfe nur wenn nötig: Suche die Ursache für die Verspätung. Du musst nicht jedes Wort übersetzen.

Vocabulary in context

Chunk Use Example
I'm sorry. apologise I'm sorry. I forgot your book.
It was my fault. take responsibility I broke the cup. It was my fault.
What happened? ask for information What happened after school?

Thanks for telling me. react positively Thanks for telling me.
I can fix it. offer a solution I can fix it tomorrow.

Pronunciation: Clear is the goal

You do not need a perfect accent. Be clear.

Say these chunks slowly, then at normal speed:

I'm SORry. What HAPpened? It was my FAULT. That's oKAY.

Try the dialogue rhythm:

I'm sorry. | I dropped your bottle. What happened? | I hit the table.

Tip: Stress the important word. Speak in short chunks. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.

Try and use

Functional grammar: Simple past

Use the Simple Past for a finished event in the past.

Now / base form Past Example
drop dropped I dropped the bottle.
turn turned I turned around.
forget forgot I forgot my book.
go went I went home.
break broke The lid broke.
be was / were I was late.

Negative: I didn't forget the book.

Question: What did you do?

Important: After did or didn't, use the base form: Did you break it? I didn't break it.

Optional E-look ahead

Only notice this sentence. You do not need it for the G-level tasks:

When I arrived, the lesson had already started.

The form had + past participle is called the Past Perfect. It can show that one past event happened before another past event.

Speaking: Build a short apology

Work with a partner.

A: Ask: What happened?

B: Use this frame:

I'm sorry. I __________. It was my fault. I can __________.

A: React:

That's okay. or Don't worry. or Thanks for telling me.

Easy word bank: forgot – dropped – lost – broke – was late – missed the bus – help – fix it – bring it tomorrow

Speaking: Three situations

Choose one situation.

  1. You forgot your partner's worksheet.
  2. You were late for group work.
  3. You dropped a friend's pencil case.

Step 1: Say sorry. Step 2: Say what happened. Step 3: React or offer a solution.

Feedback from your partner: Did you hear a clear apology? Did you hear a past form? Did you hear a reaction or solution?

Writing: A short apology message

Write 4–6 short sentences.

Writing frame:

Hi __________, I'm sorry about __________. I __________. Then I __________. It was my fault. / I hope that's okay. I can __________. See you, __________

Word bank: forgot – missed – dropped – broke – lost – was late – went – brought – can help – can fix – can bring

Mediation: Explain the message

A German-speaking classmate says:

„Ich komme zehn Minuten später. Mein Bus ist ausgefallen. Sag bitte Frau Miller Bescheid.“

Tell the important information in simple English.

Try first.

Starter: Lena is sorry. She ...

Hint: You do not need a word-for-word translation. Give the key information.

Possible model after your try: Lena is sorry. Her bus didn't come. She will be about ten minutes late.

Direct feedback: Check and improve

Read your speaking or writing task again.

  1. Sorry check: Did I use an apology chunk?
  2. Past check: Did I use at least one correct past form?
  3. Reaction check: Did I react or offer a solution?
  4. Clear check: Are my sentences short and easy to understand?

Now improve one sentence.

Mini-transfer: New situation

New situation:

You borrowed a classmate's book. You left it at home.

Speak or write 3–5 sentences.

Starter: I'm sorry. I ...

Challenge: Add a solution.

Safe media and AI use

Use fictional names and situations. Do not publish private social-media data.

Audio recordings are voluntary and private. Do not upload recordings without permission.

If your teacher allows AI support, use it to check one point, for example a verb form or whether a sentence is understandable. Check the AI feedback yourself. AI should not replace your own text and should not receive private recordings or personal data without permission.

Can-do check

Mark what is true for you:

  1. I can say I'm sorry in a suitable situation.
  2. I can answer What happened?
  3. I can use some simple past forms.
  4. I can react with That's okay or a similar chunk.
  5. I can write a short apology message.
  6. I can improve one sentence after feedback.

If you need more practice, repeat the speaking frame with a new situation.

Follow-up course

Next step: use the same past forms to tell a short sequence of events.

Suggested follow-up: Simple Past – telling a short story
