Mini-Beschreibung: Erschließe die Hauptaussage kurzer Geschichten, Blogs, Nachrichten und Empfehlungen. Du liest zuerst auf Englisch, probierst eine Strategie aus und nutzt Bilder, Überschriften und Kontext. Deutsche Hilfe kommt nur dann dazu, wenn Du sie brauchst.

Look first – do not translate. What can you see? What might the text be about?

This course is for English as a first foreign language, Class 7, G level, Baden-Württemberg. The texts are short. New words are limited. Useful chunks come back again and again.

Learning path: notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.

Vorwissen: Start with clues

Try first. You see a title: A New School Garden. You see a photo of plants and students.

What is the text probably about?

A) a school garden B) a football match C) a train trip

Check: A fits the title and the picture.

German help if needed: probably = wahrscheinlich. Du musst noch nicht jedes Wort verstehen. Nutze zuerst die Hinweise.

Reading strategy: Find the main idea

The main idea is the most important message of a text. It tells you what the text is mainly about.

Use this short strategy:

Look: Read the title. Look at the picture.
Read once: Read from start to finish. Do not stop at every new word.
Ask: Which idea comes back? What is important for the whole text?
Say it: “This text is mainly about ...”

A detail gives extra information. A detail can be true, but it is not the whole message.

Hint 1: Look for repeated words or ideas. Hint 2: The first or last sentence can help, but it is not always the answer. German help if needed: main idea = Hauptaussage; detail = Einzelinformation.

Listening and viewing

First watch: Listen for the big idea. Do not turn on a transcript or subtitles yet.

After the first watch, complete one sentence:

The video is mainly about ...

Second watch: Listen for two clues that help you find a main idea.

Need help? Pause after a short part. Watch again. Use subtitles only after your first listening try.

Mini feedback: If your answer names the whole topic and not one small example, you are on the right track.

Optional viewing: Skimming

Skimming means reading quickly for the general idea. You do not need every detail.

Try: Watch a short part and listen for the words skimming and scanning. For this course, focus on skimming: quick reading for the general idea.

Reading 1: A short story

Story: The red bus

Mia was late for school. Her usual bus did not come. She waited for ten minutes and started to worry. Then a red replacement bus arrived. The driver smiled and said, “School route!” Mia got on and reached school before the bell.

Try: What is the main idea?

A) Mia solves a small travel problem and gets to school. B) The bus is red. C) The driver smiles.

Check after your try: A is the main idea. B and C are details.

Reading 2: A short blog post

Fictional profile: Sam, 13 – school blog

My quiet reading trick

I read for ten minutes after dinner. I put my phone away and choose a short text. I do not look up every new word. First, I try to understand the big idea. This makes reading easier for me.

Try: Finish the sentence: “Sam recommends ...”

Hint: Which action is the point of the whole post?

Check: Sam recommends a short, focused reading routine and looking for the big idea first.

German help if needed: put my phone away = das Handy weglegen; look up = nachschlagen.

Reading 3: Short school news

Green Week starts at West Park School

West Park School starts Green Week on Monday. Classes collect paper, switch off unused lights and bring reusable bottles. On Friday, students share their best ideas in the school hall. The goal is simple: use less waste and save energy.

Try first: Choose the best main idea.

A) The school has a week with actions for the environment. B) Students meet on Friday. C) Some students bring bottles.

Check: A covers the whole text. B and C are details.

News clue: The headline often gives you a strong first clue.

Reading 4: A recommendation

Try the Friday Book Corner!

Do you want a short break after school? Come to the Friday Book Corner in the library. You can read comics, short stories or magazines for 30 minutes. Bring your own book or choose one there. I recommend it because it is calm, easy and free.

Try: Why does the writer recommend the Book Corner?

Sentence starter: “The writer recommends it because ...”

Check: The writer thinks it is a calm, easy and free place to read.

Vocabulary in context

Learn only a small word bank. Use the words in the texts.

Try: Cover the middle column. Explain each word with the chunk or with an example.

Pronunciation: Clear chunks

Say these chunks slowly, then at a natural speed:

Focus on clear words and a steady rhythm. Being understandable is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

You may record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless your teacher and you clearly agree on sharing. No unasked uploads.

Speaking: Say the main idea

Work with a partner.

Student A reads one short text.
Student A says: “This text is mainly about ...”
Student B asks: “What clue helped you?”
Student A answers: “The title / picture / repeated word helped me.”
Change roles.

Easy version: Use the sentence starters exactly as they are. Challenge: Add one detail after your main-idea sentence.

Writing: Three connected sentences

Use this writing frame:

This text is mainly about ... . One important detail is ... . I think this is important because ... .

Keep your text short. Three clear sentences are enough.

Word bank: mainly, important, because, but, so, recommend, problem, solution.

Mediation: Explain, do not translate everything

Read one English text again. Explain the main idea to a German-speaking partner in one or two German sentences. Do not translate every word.

Then return to English and say:

The text is mainly about ...

This is mediation: You pass on the important meaning for another person.

Functional grammar: Connect your idea

You do not need new difficult grammar to show the main idea. Use simple connectors:

because gives a reason: “I recommend it because it is calm.”
but shows a contrast: “The text is short, but it has an important message.”
so shows a result: “Mia was late, so she took the replacement bus.”

Use mainly the present simple and past simple that you already know.

Controlled E-lookout: Past perfect

Only notice this form. You do not need to use it freely yet:

After Mia had checked the bus stop, she waited for the replacement bus.

The form had + past participle can show that one past action happened before another past action. In this course, recognizing the idea is enough.

Feedback loop: Try, check, improve

Use this small loop after each text:

Notice: title, picture, repeated idea.
Understand: read for the big message.
Try: write or say one main-idea sentence.
Use: add one useful detail.
Communicate: tell a partner.
Feedback: ask, “Does my sentence cover the whole text?”
Improve: make the sentence clearer or shorter.
Use again: try the strategy on a new text.

Direct feedback rule: If your sentence is only one tiny fact, make it wider. If it is too general, add the text topic.

Bike Day

Our class wants to come to school by bike on Wednesday. We will meet near the sports hall at 7:30. Two adults will ride with the group. We want to move more and use fewer cars for one morning.

Your task: Write one main-idea sentence and one detail.

Hint: Ask: What is the whole plan for?

Possible check: The class plans a Bike Day to be active and use fewer cars.

Recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless sharing is clearly agreed. Do not upload classmates' work without permission. Do not send texts, voices or personal data to external AI tools without teacher approval and informed agreement.

If you use AI feedback in a permitted setting, check whether the language really fits your level. Compare the feedback with the task and with teacher or peer feedback. AI can help you notice a problem, but it should not replace your own text.
